*NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN MARITIME STUDENTS NANMS*

An Open Letter to the VC and The Management of the Nigerian Maritime University

*A Call for Resumption of Academic Activities*

Dear Sir,

I should like to begin by expressing my sincere condolences on the demis of one of your cadets named Emmanuel Uhie some weeks. It is indeed a great lost to the family of the deseased, the University, and the students community at large.

I write this letter to you on behalf of the Nigeria Maritime Students and other concerned professionals in the maritime community to express our concerns over the lingering closure of academic activities by the management of the University, to present the possible negative effect this action might have on our fellow students, and to find a lasting solutions to the pending problem as we believe that "whatever affects one directly affects others indirectly".

I, as the president of the Association, accompanied by other student leaders have had the opportunity of touring most of the maritime institutions in the Country and we have been able to recognize some serious challenges faced by some of these Institutions especially those located in the remote islands and villages in the Niger Delta. These challenges include access to modern health facilities, community insecurities and violence, good and proper accomodations, high cost of transportation, and welfare of the students in general.

It is important I state that protest and violent remains the only voice of the unheard. We are aware of the recent protest by the students in solidarity with the death of Emmanuel Uhie which was later hijacked by some elements of aggrieved students distroying school properties which turns whole process into violent protest. The management must prevent such future occurrences by paying attention and swift actions to the plights of the students.

May I recall at this juncture, that the primary aim for establishing the Nigerian Maritime University NMU in May 2015 is to produce top-notch indigenous maritime professionals and to make handful contributions to maritime technology and applied sciences. It is an unhappy truth that if faced with educational crisis that's being experienced by other higher institutions of learning such as strike, community insecurities, and treacherous academic environment, the University may end up producing half-baked graduates not capable of achieving the aims for which she was created.

We, therefore call on the management of the Institution to swiftly take decisive actions in ending the ongoing strike and call the cadets back on campus for academic activities. This is what must be done because if not done, it would play havock to our academic destiny of our fellow students.

Regards.

Signed,
Hon Comr Nwosa Calistus.
NANMS National President.

National Association of Nigerian Maritime Students ( NANMS ), Calls for Actions

We want you all to join us in a match to protest against the negligence of NIMASA to the welfare and trainings of the Nigerian Maritime Students.

Our universities, polytechnics, monotechnics and colleges produce graduate in their rich numbers, enough to solve the problems of maritime industry. But they are never empower to practice in the industry. Something must be done

It is an unhappy truth that many people, even those in the academic atmosphere do not know about the so called National Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP) scheme under NIMASA. This looting and currupt scheme must be abandoned. It's an empowerment of the rich by the the rich. Something must be done in a hurry.

Recently, it was in the news, Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved $454,000 to be spent in providing seatime experience for Nigerian seafarers trained by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) under its National Seafarers Development Programme (NSDP). This money is very little compared to billions of naira used to training those those cadets abroad. We must take actions.

They approved thousand and million of dollars for NSDP when no maritime institution can afford a training vessel for its cadet.

They approved thousand and million of dollars when thousands of vulnerable graduates cannot afford ordinary STCW after school.

They approved millions and thousands of dollars when non of our indigenous private owned training centers measure to international standards.

Something must be done and done in hurry.
So I call on you all to support me in this 30 day peaceful campaign protest to fight for the training and development of our local content (Nigerian Maritime Students)

We need to arouse the concienece of our Leaders and stakeholders to the huge responsibilities and ethical commitment to the development of our local content

We give our federal government Agencies especially NIMASA a 30 days ultimatum to address itself to needs mentioned above. If not, a massive physical match would be organized

Join us in this 30day media campaign.
A struggle for all not for one.
An injury to one is an injury to all.
Let's join hands in the spirit of the slogans we profess, Onward Together.
With this spirit, we shall cause a revolutional ripple effect that will lead to the true reflection of the Treasures of the Seas.

Thanks and God bless you.

MARINE VS MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

With my little experience as a Mariner, I've not figured out where to place mechanical engineering, as a friend or enemy of marine engineering.
But it has occurred to me that Mechanical Engineers play the politics better than the Marine Engineers
They are smarter dudes. They played their politics to the histories to make generations believe that Mechanical Engineering is the father of Marine Engineering.

The reality is struggling to the surface. Many people now take both to be friends (thesame)

Developed countries now appreciate the precious gift of Marine by giving a clear direction and position for both professions and given room for synergies. They've trived economically.

The situation in Nigeria is still begging for intervention. Progress has been made in Academics but the industry has not yet recognized the essence of Marine Engineers.

Most of our policy makers and professional bodie like COREN, NIMASA, NSE etc. are still sleeping through revolution.

Until we are position well, the hidden treasures in the sea will remain untapped.

TO THE IGBOs
(The best group of people in Nigeria)

*Please share if you are convinced*

I recently visited the Eastern part of Nigeria for the first time and my experience there spelled my convictions.

Roads are as smooth as express
Villages are as developed as cities
Beautiful house structures with standards.
Businesses Thrive.
Churches are as beautiful as paradise.
Farmers and Market women sell.
And what more can I say, cost of living low and standard of living high.

These are the people who for long have not rule in A*o rock but daily rule their purpose.
They don't depend on government allocation because they already have Divine allocation.
They need no Oil Block because they have business blocks
They need no RUGA settlement because they peacefully explore the world.
They are talented, Passionate, Resourceful, Caring, Visionary, and Loving.
The love that binds them is beyond imagination.

Yes, they are the best tribe in Nigeria.
