Michael Faraday (22-9-1791-25-8-1867) discovered many of the fundamental laws of physics and chemistry, despite the fact that he had virtually no formal education. The son of an English blacksmith, he was apprenticed at the age of 14 to a bookseller and bookbinder. He read every book on science in the bookshop and attended lectures given at the Royal Institution by various natural philosophers, including Sir Humphry Davy, the discoverer of several chemical elements. In 1812, he applied to Davy for a job, citing his interest in science and showing Davy the extensive lecture notes he had taken. Davy hired Faraday to assist with his research and lecture demonstrations.

Magnetism and chemistry
Within a few years, Faraday began to do original research on his own, submitting two papers on chemistry to the Royal Society in 1820. In that same year, Oersted discovered that a current in a wire deflects a compass needle. Faraday repeated Oersted’s experiments and found that a magnet also exerts a force on a wire carrying an electric current. Soon afterward, he also showed how to liquefy chlorine, and he isolated benzene, a fundamental component of organic chemistry.

Faraday’s important discoveries brought him considerable fame, much to the discomfort of Davy, who felt he should have shared the credit for some of the advances. Davy preferred to regard Faraday as a technical assistant and even forced him to serve as a valet on an extended tour of European research centres. Despite Davy’s objections, Faraday was elected to the Royal Society in 1824 and was made director of the laboratory at the Royal Institution in 1825.

Electricity
After Faraday discovered, in 1831, that a changing magnetic field can induce a current, he performed a series of experiments that showed clearly that the induced EMF is equal to the rate of change of magnetic flux. Also, generalizing from the patterns formed by iron filings around magnets, he invented the concepts of magnetic and electric field lin

Meet Sarki Abdulkadir from Kano State Nigeria, the genius that was made to rewrite WASSCE after scoring 9 distinctions.

In 1984, 16 year-old Abba, a student of Science Secondary School Dawakin Tofa, scored 9 distinctions (8 A1s and 1 A2) in his West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) Exams.

Examination authorities in Lagos didn't believe Abba made those excellent scores without cheating. The authorities provided a car that took Abba to Lagos in order to retake the exam.

Abba was made to take the 9 exams in a duration of 3 days, under heavy supervision. After marking the rescheduled exams, he scored 9 A1s (the only ‘A2’ he had in English Language before the retake, now became ‘A1’).

Faced with shock, the authorities apologized and instituted the National Merit Award. And, rightfully, Sarki Abba was the first recipient of the award.

In 1989/90 school session, Sarki Abba graduated as OVERALL BEST Medical Student, and OVERALL BEST Graduating Student at ABU, Zaria— he was just 21.

Today, he is a Professor of Urological Research, and Professor of Urology and Pathology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, USA.

He also serves as Co-Director of Cancer Global Health at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University IL, USA.

President Bola Tinubu signs Electricity Act 2023 into law

President Tinubu has assented to the 2023 Electricity Act which is a replacement for the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005.

The Act will bring about the de-monopolization of Nigeria’s electricity generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity at the National level and empower states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit and distribute electricity.

The Electricity Act was first passed in July 2022 under the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assented to the Electricity Act 2023 which was initially passed by lawmakers in July 2022.

The Electricity Act will replace the Electricity and Power Sector Reform Act of 2005. It provides a framework to guide the post-privatization phase of the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) as well as encourage private sector investments in the sector.

Highlighted below are some of the functions the Electricity Act seeks to guide-

State electricity empowerment

The de-monopolization of Nigeria’s electricity generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity at the National level empowers states, companies, and individuals to generate, transmit and distribute electricity.

Under the Act, states can issue licenses to private investors who can operate mini-grids and power plants within the state. However, the Act precludes interstate and transnational electricity distribution.

Powers of NERC

Under the Electricity Act 2023, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) will be able to regulate the electricity sector within Nigeria without prejudice to the powers of the states to make laws and create electricity markets within those states and to regulate those markets.

The Act mandates how NERC can transition regulatory responsibilities from itself to state regulators when they are established. Until a state has passed its electricity market laws, NERC will continue to regulate

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has released demands it made at the meeting held with the Federal Government on Sunday over the recent fuel subsidy removal.
In a statement signed by the union's president, Festus Osifo, and general secretary, Nuhu Toro, on Monday, the union called for the immediate implementation of the demands.
It highlighted 14 of the demands for immediate implementation and five for the medium term.
The demands include maintenance of status quo ante of premium motor spirit (PMS) pump price while discussion continued.
"Minimum wage should be increased from the current ₦‎30,000 to ₦‎200,000 before the end of June 2023, with consequential adjustment on cost of feeding allowance, like feeding, transport, housing, among others.
"A representative of state governors will be party to this communique and all the governors must commit to implement the new minimum wage.
"Tax holiday for employees both in government and private sector that earn less than ₦‎200,000 or $500 monthly whichever is higher.
"PMS Allowance to be introduced for those earning between ₦‎200,000 to ₦‎500,000 or $500 to $1,200 whichever is higher," it said.
Others include the setting up of intervention fund where government would be paying ₦‎10 per litre on all locally consumed PMS.
According to the TUC, the primary purpose of this fund is to solve perennial and protracted national issues in education, health and housing.
"A governance structure that will include labour, civil society and government will be put in place to manage the implementation.
"Federal Government should provide mass transit vehicles for all categories of the populace.
"State governments should immediately set up a subsidised transportation system to reduce the pressure on workers and students: the framework around this will be worked out.
