PRESS STATEMENT

DEMOCRACY DAY: ORTOM URGES NIGERIANS TO RISE AGAINST ANTI DEMOCRATIC FORCES

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom has urged Nigerians to be on the alert against anti democratic forces saying “We must guard our democracy jealously."

He stated: “By deliberate efforts and design, Nigerians opted for the presidential system of democracy because it is participatory and representative enough. It is a way of life that must be held sacrosanct."

In his goodwill message to Nigerians to commemorate the June 12 struggle, Ortom recalled the tortuous journey to democratic rule and urged Nigerians to rise up to say “Never again shall we allow undemocratic forces take control of our collective destiny."

The Governor advocated for the need to strengthen democratic institutions in the country “so that the practice of democracy should not be at the dictates or the whims and caprices of a few individuals who think they will lord it over the general public but the wishes of the people."

He pointed out that the unabating security situation where armed Fulani terrorists are seizing our sovereignty is already a threat to our hard earned democracy, a development he lamented has not been given priority attention by the the current APC led federal government is a cause for concern.

Ortom added: “Democracy should be our way of life. It is freedom to exercise our franchise in an uninterrupted environment. But insecurity that has forced majority of our away from their ancestral lands and made their living conditions less than humans because they are now forced to live in shanties is a major challenge. This is why the federal government must wake up to their responsibility and tackle the menace headlong."

He went on: “We cannot be celebrating democracy day when our citizens are now slaves and not free in their homes, schools, worship centres, workplaces and cannot go to their farms or even travel freely on our roads or by train. We must tackle the issue of insecurity courageously if we are to practice democracy freely."

Looking back, Governor Ortom said his administration has "in the last seven years, provided dividends of democracy in education, health, agriculture, infrastructure and other critical sectors of development, in the face of daunting economic and security challenges. We appreciate the people of Benue State for the support given us and assure them that our administration will not waver. We will sustain the tempo in this remaining year.”

While paying glowing tribute to the June 12, 1993, Democracy martyr Chief M.K.O . Abiola, Governor Ortom prayed that what led to the ill-fated third republic will not occur again in Nigeria.

GEMADE AND CO CAN ONLY LICK THEIR WOUNDS .....

In todays sub title intervention, I show how aggrieved APC aspirants woke up a little bit late in their wild goose chase for the party ticket.

Gemade and co would have started this fight long before now by using their money to have a factional Chapter of APC and also conducted their own primary... They would have started by not recognizing the Agada led state working Commitee.

They failed themselves by accepting the leadership of the APC State working Commitee. They failed the moment they aligned with the Agada led State Working Commitee . They can only lick their wounds

It would have been much easier if APC in Benue had two factions. Both conducting seperate primaries with INEC tilting towards the GEMADE faction.

Also if INEC was not supporting the faction with Fr Dr Alia it would have been an issue.

In this case, no faction. INEC is duly involved .

State chapter fully in charge and recognised by Abuja APC. Everything revolving around party candidature except it involved issues of qualification of candidate solely lies in the hands of the party. The supreme Court has resolved this many times. Unless for example, you show cause that Fr Alia was not qualified to vie for office i.e , (forged certificate )

I believe it is in the search for such basis of disqualification that Mike Aondoakaa SAN went on a voyage asking the court to censor if being a Catholic priest qualifies one to vie. Laughable . Even as a SAN he had to search for a way .....he found none. He brought in his prayer. Let's see how the court will console him.

To Uba and PDP, the new electoral act simply makes it impossible for them to have any benefit from their suit. Theirs is dead on arrival.

In summary, given the circumstances that the state chapter of the party ,which is the APC and INEC are on the side of Fr Alia candidature, nothing can be done much more than using the long legal route to sustain hope and justify the donations advanced by the PDP led regime in Benue to distabilise APC. BEYOND THIS, NOTHING ELSE.

Our sentiments sacrifice merit in favour of mediocrity

By Kushi Libi Isaac

"The process that leaders emerge from needs a complete overhaul through education, enlightenment, reasoning and common sense.

This is a country where followers and persons who appeal to our sentiments are considered for offices more than competent people because those who're competent don't appeal to the ignorant, gullible and stock of uninformed electorates that we have in the country.

To be blunt, it is easier for Chris Ngige to emerge as Presidential flag bearer of the major political party than Ngozi Okonjo Iweala; much easier for Tinubu or Aregbesola to emerge than Akinwunmi Adesina.
It is much easier for Dalung and Babachir than Bogoro. It is easier for Kazaure than Jelaini. Much easier for Yerima than Serika. The list is endless.

Until leaders emerge through the ballot by the content of their characters, abilities to deliver, efficiency, effectiveness, proactiveness, transparency, accountability, inclusiveness and other virtues are considered beyond ethnic, regional, and religious sentiments, then our misfortunes just will have begun.

The political arena is not for intellectuals and technocrats; it's for fault lines of identity champions who have deceived the masses.
Needless to say from the new millennium people like Shamsudeen Usman, Chukwuma Soludo, Rukkayatu Alkali, Sanusi Dagash, Olusegun Aganga, Muiz Banire, Frank Nweke, Peter Obi, Donald Duke, Bashir Yuguda are the persons we're thinking of whom should be entrusted with running the affairs of this nation.

NB. Most names I recommended here served under the PDP government and the reason I called them is because their works are there to speak for themselves many years after leaving the corridors of power.

If you have other names from other viable parties, bring it on let's move forward and break away from the clutches of the present leaders who are not in touch with reality."

Religion plays a major role in our politics. Don't even pretend that it doesn't. We are in a country where the people are divided by harmless issues such as the hijab, the cross signs on ambulances and public holidays. How much more of having a Muslim presidential candidate and a Muslim running mate? When board appointments are announced, we don't pay attention to the competence of the members. We focus on their religious identity instead, and counting if there are more Muslim or Christian members on the board. A Muslim/Muslim presidential ticket is no less controversial.

Nigeria's religious sensitivity is a reality. Ordinarily, competence should be more important than one's religious identity, but we are not dealing with an ideal situation. There is a difference between the world as it is and the world as it should be. We shouldn't for the sake of political expediency justify today what we opposed yesterday. In 2015, the Muslim/Muslim ticket controversy was the reason Tinubu couldn't become General Buhari's running mate and he was asked to nominate someone else. Osinbajo became the accidental beneficiary of Tinubu's replacement.

UNPOPULAR POST

Just because you can win election without certain people because they are small it doesn't make exclusion a fair and acceptable policy. Yes El-Rufai won reelection, despite a Muslim/Muslim ticket. But getting away with something because of your population advantage doesn't make it right still. Nigeria is bigger than kaduna State; so just because El-Rufai successfully defied reason and imposed a Muslim/Muslim ticket it doesn't mean a president of Nigeria should encourage and make it a national policy.

Let's be upfront about it here. The President of Nigeria is not the Governor of Kaduna State. I can't imagine Atiku picking a Muslim running mate in order to win by taking advantage of the large Muslim population in the North. To ignore our religious and ethnic sensibilities in a complex and diverse society like Nigeria is wrong and indefensible.

Being small doesn't make any group of people insignificant or nonexistent. Inclusion is essential to the survival of our political union. In fact, even if the minorities didn't vote for you, nowhere doesn't constitution say that those who didn't vote for you should enjoy less rights or should be discriminated against.

If you argue that capacity or competence is more important than one's religion, then tell me any group that can't produce leaders in Nigeria based on such criterion? Competence or capacity is not limited to any group. Are people automatically incompetent because they are minorities? So, this argument is self-serving, dishonest, unfair and fundamentally flawed.

If you argue that "democracy democracy is a game of numbers," in order to justify exclusion, then is 'competence' or 'capacity' also a game of numbers? Justice and equity is the soul of democracy. Democracy protects the rights of the smallest minorities, and you can't protect their rights by limiting their ambitions.

We are living in dangerous times. We are living in a time when separatist agitations are getting louder. These separatist tendencies are disturbing symptoms of an underlying disease. If we ignore this disease, it may ultimately grow malignant and kill us. There is a limit you can impose unity by force. If unity wasn't important, then why did Nigeria have to fight the civil war in order to keep the Igbos in the union? You can't fix our troubled political marriage by ignoring the issues that give rise to separatist agitations.

I want a democracy that is founded on justice and fairness. We can't however achieve that by justifying exclusion. Adequately led and formidably organized, even the smallest groups can create problems for democracies. Justice is cheaper than war. Didn't Obasanjo realise the limits of military might in suppressing the Niger Delta agitation? Nnamdi kanu is a symptom of an underlying problem, and this problem can't be solved militarily. If you keep creating too many enemies at different fronts because you're big, you may end up leading exhausted troops.

OWO town in Ondo State is NOT a good place for heinous crime. They don't allow killers to go scot free.

How?????

Because the people GO TRADITIONAL whenever anyone takes a 'War' to them.
"No one brings war to Owo" is a sing song among this very peaceable people.

On many occasions they have demonstrated this. Sometime ago, armed Robber's raided multiple Banks in the town and killed people including Policemen. The ELDERS of the town felt challenged. They carried out a RITUAL and swore that the Felons would be apprehended. An indigene of the town told me the ROBBERS stood no chance.
Exactly one week later the men were rounded up in different parts of Nigeria and taken back to Owo in Ondo State. The rest is History.

About 5 days ago, some killers went into a Catholic Church within Owo and slaughtered nearly 50 people in a BLOOD-bath. The bodies of the Igbo among the victims have been taken back to their States of origin for burial.

Now! Two days after the killings ELDERLY women of the town mobilized and carried out a Ritual in BROAD Daylight. Within 48 hours the killers were apprehended. I just watched a video of the Oba in Owo telling his subjects that the killers have been apprehended.

What point am I making??? A people who stick to their CULTURE and TRADITIONS are ever formidable. Those who throw theirs away will WEEP and RUN even when no one is pursuing.

Contrary-wise among the Igbo, the people are busy BURNING all the Traditional religious items their ancestors used to protect their communities. Foolishly many have been brainwashed to accept that their ancestors were WITCHES and WIZARDS.

I never stop to regret that a particular 'Ram Horn' (Shofar) that was blown in my community whenever it was under attack was destroyed years back during a so called Crusade by a Church. My father told me that the sound of that Ram Horn transformed all the young men who MUST hear it into fierce fighters. It was an instrument for spiritual warfare.

I just heard that the killers in OWO by themselves WALKED to the palace of the Oba to 'REPORT' themselves. I am NOT surprised. That Oba when he was inaugurated announced to the World that he intends to be a TRADITIONAL ruler in the real sense of the WORD.

What happened in Owo has given further vent to the igbo adage that: "Nku n'ona mba n'eghere mba nri". Meaning : "The solution to the problems in a community would invariably be found within the community" .

June 12: FG Has Done Enough For Abiola, Says Lai Mohammed

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Thursday, said the Federal Government had done enough to honour the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, Chief Moshood Abiola.

He also said that the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), would address the nation through a live broadcast on Sunday, June 12, 2022, by 7:00 am to mark Democracy Day.

Buhari had in 2018, directed that Nigeria’s Democracy Day, which was hitherto marked every May 29, be shifted to June 12 in honour of late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, the presumed winner of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

The President had also honoured Abiola with a posthumous award of Grand Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic.

Mohammed during a press briefing at Radio House in Abuja said no government had immortalised Abiola than Buhari’s regime.

He listed some of the activities lined up for the Democracy Day celebration to include a public lecture at the National Mosque on Friday and Jumaat prayers on the same day and venue on June 10, 2022.
According to him, this would be followed by the President’s address and a church service at the National Christian Centre by 3pm on Sunday, June 12, 2022.

He said there would also be a Democracy Day parade at the Eagle Square in Abuja on Monday morning.

Mohammed assured that all events would be held and there would be no security breaches.
The minister added that attendance “at these events are strictly by invitation and in line with the COVID-19 protocol”.
The minister also explained that the annulment of June 12 brought Nigeria to the brink.

He, therefore, said whatever the Federal Government was doing was to celebrate that day in memory of Abiola, as well as many other heroes, many Nigerian students, and democrats worth celebrating.
“So, I think the Federal Government has done enough in addition to the fact that several state governments have followed suit. We have in our small way be courageous enough to declare this day a public holiday, I think it is the best gift to any Nigerian,” he said.

ISWAP behind Ondo attack, says National Security Council
__________________

The National Security Council, on Thursday, revealed that the Islamic State, West African Province masterminded the deadly attack on St. Francis Catholic Church, Owo, Ondo State that left over 25 people dead on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, disclosed this to State House correspondents, shortly after the over three-hour council meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.

Aregbesola, who spoke in the company of the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, said security agencies are closing in on the perpetrators through their traces.

According to him, the council is gravely concerned about spate of blasphemy-linked killings and has directed security agents to hunt those behind the killing of Deborah Samuel Sokoto State and a more recent case in Abuja.

He, however, noted that the police have arrested no one for the attack since Sunday.

The minister also debunked notions that the attack carried an ethnic-religious tint.

Aregbesola said the council has made adequate security preparations for the June 18 governorship election in Ekiti State.

Those who attended the security meeting were Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha; the Chief of Staff to the President, Professor Ibrahim Gambari and the National Security Adviser, Major General Babagana Monguno (retd.).

The Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor; Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Farouk Yahaya; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo; and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao were also in attendance.

Also in attendance were the Inspector-General of Police, Alkali Usman; the Director-General of the Department of State Service, Yusuf Bichi; and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ahmed Abubakar

Nigerians are of the views that Alex Iwobi was very impressive against Sierra Leone.

Some even said maybe Nigeria would have beaten Ghana in Abuja in World Cup play-off if Alex Iwobi had played.

10/06/2022

Conflicting reports from Ondo state indicates Bandits behind the Owo attack are either caught by the Troops of NA or walked into the palace of Olowo and confessed their involvement.
Whatever the case, may we have peace in Nigeria and all over. Enough of bloodbath. Life is sacrosanct. Killing of what we can't make is the highest sin against human and God.
