A school of thought has been making the rounds for some time now that the Igbo people were descended from the Habiru or Hebrew Israelites. This theory is not just dubious, but highly fallacious and misleading, and here’s why.

From a collection of DNA test samples conducted, results show that (some) Ndi-Igbo people have a genealogical ancestry that takes back to the Natufian hunter-gatherers.

Who Were the Natufian Hunter-Gatherers?

The Natufians were migrants out of Africa (the cradle of Humanity) who passed through the Mediterranean corridor into the Middle East about 12, 000 years ago. They are recorded to be the first people to build cities in the Levant (the plains of Canaan) about 9, 000 years ago. The first civilized ‘Asiatic’. DNA tests done on their remains showed that they had the African Y-Chromosome E1b1a and E1b1b haplo-type.

They are called hunter-gatherers because the oldest evidence of them reveals they had a strong hunting culture, which soon morphed into agriculture. Studies have it that some Natufians did a backwards migration into Africa, where some settled in Lower and Upper Egypt (the route they took out of Africa) and others moved farther back into Nubia and inner Africa and mixed with the inhabitants there.

The remnants in Canaan possibly bred with Neanderthals and Asiatic albinos (a product of genetic mutation of the Black woman), which ultimately led to the appearance of the yellow bone and/or white-skinned people. Remember, Blacks have kinky and straight hair. The straight-haired Asiatic albinos formed the white race, for as humans moved farther away from the equator into the colder regions of the world, the light-skin pigment was sustained. A blend of black, yellow and mixed Natufians later known as Phoenicians or Canaanites, made up the Semitic-speaking people of the Levant, who occupied other Asiatic lands.

Where does Israel come in, in all these?

To opine that the great Ndi-Igbo people are Hebrews is unfair to say the least. Ndi-Igbo are older than the Israelites. The oldest excavation done in Igbo land dates back to circa 2,500 BCE, while the oldest mention of Israel in recorded history appears circa 1208 BCE in the Menerptah Stela. Pharaoh Menerptah, son of Ramses the Great, exulting in his victory over the Canaanites, mentions in passing that he has destroyed Y’israel, a Canaan ethnic group obviously. The people that comprised of the Israelites were desert hillside dwellers on the plains of Judah and Lachish, on the southern borders of the small village called Y’isra-el. They were known as the Shasu and Habiru people, as recorded by the ancient Egyptians, who branded them as troublesome, thieves, bandits, and those who were experts at abandoning jobs they were paid to do.

The Shasu nomadic contingent of Israel are the first to worship the Semitic tribal deity Yahweh, as recorded on the columns of the hypostyle hall of Pharaoh Amenhotep III, at Soleb, Ta Nehisi (Nubia). They came from the regions of Edom (Midian, Seir, Paran). They mixed with the Habiru people and formed Israel. Bible talks about Israel being “a mixed multitude.” Exodus 12:38. The Bible also has it that “Yahweh came from a home in Edom and Seir” (Judges 5:4), meaning this tribal deity was not first worshipped by the Israelites, but by the desert Shasu people. But Bible writers don’t reveal that.

Yahweh was at first a family and tribal deity, like we have in Africa today, as noted by respected Israeli scholar Amzallag Nissi, and renowned Dutch Old Testament scholar, Karel van der Toorn. However, the Greeks and Romans assisted the Jews (Hebrews, Habiru), obviously for political reasons, to make this deity the God of the world, and stories of his greatness were invented and repackaged and sold to us all. Till this day, European Greco-Roman Jews are still ruling the world (Ashkenazi, Sephardic Jews; Zionists). One famous story sold to us is the Exodus crossing of the Red Sea. It has been completely dismantled and dismissed by mainstream Old Testament scholars as a rabbinical invention, with lots of evidence to boot. After over 100 years of excavation in Israel, not one evidence for the 12 tribes exist in recorded history, only in the Hebrew Bible. So, saying that a son of Jacob (who also can’t be found in history) roamed from the Middle East to West Africa and started the Igbo ethnic group, is just a laughable invention meant to distract the Igbos from concentrating on their culture and spirituality. Divide and conquer tactics.

Ndi-Igbo are not even nomadic people, it’s the Hausa-Fulani that are nomadic. Igbo people are creative, skilful and industrious people, and are more creatively related to the ancient Egyptians than the desert Apiru people. Take for instance, the Nsude Step Pyramid in Enugu has a like-for-like resemblance to the Imhotep’s five-step pyramid at Saqqara. Imhotep was a master builder and physician in Kemet (ancient Egypt). It is believed that Imhotep’s pyramid is not more than 200 years older than the Nsude pyramid. Both having a 3rd millennium BCE dating. A cultural continuation, just like circumcision, et al. (Mind you, the Hebrews copied the African concept of circumcision from the ancient Egyptians; Yahweh did not reveal it to them as the Bible would have us believe. Cf: Herodotus, Histories, Book II). And Israel was nowhere to be found in the 3rd millennium BCE.

Of course, some Igbo people have ancient Egyptian ancestry, some Natufian, some a blend of both, some Nilotic and Bantu. Truth is, Africans are from everywhere on this continent. Your tribe didn’t originate from one place in history. We are a mixed people. That’s why some Igbo people are born naturally fair like the Khoisans, some naturally pitch-black like the Nilotic Nubians.

Ndi-Igbo are not Jews, Hebrews, Habiru, Apiru. They are far older. Even the current Jews in Israel are a blend of the ancient Hebrews and European-Turks (Khazars).
