On Wednesday, November 29, 2023, the Supreme Court directed that the existing ₦200, ₦500, and ₦1,000 notes should continue to circulate alongside the new currency until further notice.
This ruling comes in response to an application by the Federal Government, seeking an extension for the coexistence of the old and new notes.
The apex court stated that both the old and new notes would retain their status as legal tender until the Federal Government, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, establishes a comprehensive process for their replacement or redesign.
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had previously announced in mid-November that the old Naira notes, namely the ₦200, ₦500, and ₦1,000 denominations, would remain legal tender indefinitely.
This decision was met with approval from various quarters, as it provided continuity and stability in the country's monetary system.
Responding to the CBN's announcement, the Federal Government approached the Supreme Court through the Attorney-General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi.
The government sought an extension of the March 3 order, which permitted the concurrent circulation of old and new notes until December 31, 2023.
In its application, the Federal Government highlighted the potential risks of a sudden withdrawal of the old notes from circulation.
It argued that such a move could lead to a national, economic, and financial crisis, similar to the challenges experienced earlier in the year during the implementation of the naira redesign policy under the former Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
The Federal Government urged the Supreme Court to consider the possible consequences of discontinuing the old notes, stating that the economy could once again face instability.

ASUU declares nationwide strike to obey NLC directive

The national body of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has directed all its members nationwide to withdraw their service from Monday midnight till further notice.

The President of ASUU, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, gave the directive in a letter sent to all the union zonal coordinators and branch chairpersons of the union on Monday evening.

He said the directive was a reminder of the initial directive given by the leadership of both the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) for all workers nationwide to commence industrial action from Monday midnight.

He maintained that ASUU as an affiliate of NLC would have to honour the directive so as to jointly protect the interest of Nigerian workers.

“So, all the leadership of our union at zone and branch levels should immediately mobilise all members to participate in the industrial action as a people united cannot be defeated,” he said.

In another development, ASUU expressed strong dissatisfaction against what it described serious economic crisis Nigeria and its people are currently grappling with.

The ASUU boss said the state of the nation and the university system was extensively assessed at the two-day National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the union at the Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna State that lasted on Sunday 12th, November 2023.

APC Leading By Over 200k Votes As INEC Adjourns Collation Of Remaining 3 Kogi LGAs

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is leading by a significant margin in results of the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Kogi State so far declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Usman Ododo, candidate of the ruling party, has won in 11 LGAs, Muri Ajaka, his Social Democratic Party (SDP) rival has won in six, while Leke Abejide of African Democratic Party (ADC) has won in one LGA.

So far, Ododo has polled 409,450 votes, Ajaka has had 208,503 while Dino Melaye of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has polled 41,925 votes.

The Nigerian superstars are winning more international awards around the world.
Nigeria international superstars Davido, Burna Boy, Asake, Olamide, and Ayra Starr have all earned nominations for the 2024 Grammy awards.
The Nigerian contingent were all nominated for the maiden African Music category with Davido for his hit single 'Unavailable', Burna Boy for 'City Boy', Ayra Starr for 'Rush', and Asake for 'Amapiano' featuring Olamide.
This mark the first nominations for Davido, Olamide, Asake, and Ayra Starr in what is a reflection of the utter dominance of Nigerian mainstream music.
South African singer Tyla was also nominated in the category for her hit single 'Water' which earns her her first nomination.

Exchange rate falls to N993/$1

Naira crashes further against dollar, pounds
The exchange rate between the naira and dollar fell to the lowest level ever on NAFEM where forex is sold officially.

This represents a massive 20.5% depreciation marking the lowest level ever recorded by the naira against the dollar.

Before now, the lowest level was N848/$1 recorded on the 17th of October 2023 which represented a one day 8.17% depreciation at the time.

The market also recorded a turnover of $88.3 million a 66% drop from $259.8 million recorded last Friday. Intra-day highs and lows were N998/$1 and N475/$1 respectively. The intra-day low is rather remarkable, and represents a N523/$1 discount to the closing day rate.

The depreciation experienced on the official market is a stark difference from the black market where the exchange rate appears to have appreciated over the last 3 trading days

🇬🇭🇿🇦 The governments of Ghana and South Africa have reached a visa waiver agreement, allowing citizens of both countries to travel visa-free for cumulative stays of up to 90 days. This agreement will come into effect on November 1st.

South Africa had also previously reached a similar agreement with Kenya in January.
