Local Ibaas Performer - Plateau State | Abom Izom ni Icen Ibaas
A 1 minute live performance by a local Ibaas performer playing an ‘izom awaya’ during the 2023 Kapwen Day - A new year cultural festival in one of the districts of Ibaas Chiefdom (Plateau, Nigeria) held on 3rd January 2023.
The local insrument ‘Izom awaya’ is a 6 stringed guitar-like instrument made of aluminum casing, wooden neck and steel strings. Other variations of this instrument (izom) are also made and played by the ibaas people. His performance was played in key E Major.
For Context:
The Ibaas people are a minority ethnic group in Plateau State Nigeria with a population of about 78,000. They speak the icen ibaas sometimes referred to as Icen fiforon language. They're located in Foron District of Barkin Ladi Local Government of Plateau State. they are also found in some parts of Jos East and Mangu LGAs but all the Ibaas people regard the Foron Hills as their ancestral home. They are subdivided into different districts of icen land namely Kapwen, Kakpwis, Ket, Nafok and Bek. These districts have their local chief (referred to as Da Gwom) headed by the King of Ibaas (Currently HRH Gwom Ibaas, Da (Dr) Luka Kpagyang)
