ONDO 2024 | There’ll Be High Voter Turnout, INEC Chairman Yakubu Assures | METROWATCH By Seyi Babalola

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has expressed hope that the gubernatorial election in Ondo State on November 16, 2024, will have a large voter participation.

The INEC chairman, speaking on Sunday in Akure, Ondo State's capital, praised the state's continuing continuous voter registration, or CVR, as commendable given the number of registrants reported in recent days.

Yakubu, who was in the state to check the level of preparedness for the off-cycle election, said that since the exercise began on May 27, 2024, almost 20,000 new registrations had been collected.

“I’m basically in Ondo State for two reasons. The first is to observe the ongoing continuous voter registration, which started on Monday, the 27th of last month.

“We have made tremendous progress based on the daily reports I have been receiving from the state office. The second reason is the early assessment of our readiness for the Ondo State governorship election.

“The election is held in the next five months, two weeks, and two days, on November 16. From the figures we are seeing of the registration, so far, since the exercise started, there has been a tremendous voter turnout.

“As of yesterday, for instance, in Ondo, we have about 20, 000 fresh registrants as of Saturday, and we are in the middle of the process.

“The new registrants do not include transfers, the collection of cards, or the replacement of cards. So, with the enthusiasm demonstrated, particularly by the young men, when you look at the breakdown of the figures, I think there will be no voter apathy in the forthcoming elections,” he said.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has rescheduled its 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, for 24,535 candidates.

JAMB rescheduled the UTME due to significant non-compliance with requirements in the impacted applicants' centres.

The board also instructed concerned applicants to print their supplemental Examination Notification Slips beginning Tuesday, June 4, 2024, to determine their scheduled examination sites.

In a statement he signed on Sunday, JAMB’s spokesman, Dr Fabian Benjamin, said the Board has also released additional 3,921 withheld results.

The statement reads in part: “The Board has painstakingly analysed the process and conduct of the 2024 UTME in some centres where there are strong proofs of substantial non-compliance with the Board’s standards.

”Consequently, 24,535 candidates have been rescheduled to retake the examination in their chosen Examination Towns on Saturday, June 22, 2024.

”Meanwhile, 3,921 outstanding 2024 UTME results that had been cleared have now been released.

”Therefore, concerned candidates are urged to check their results from Saturday, 1st June, 2024 by sending RESULT to 55019 or 66019 to ascertain their status as those cleared would have their results while those rescheduled would be told that they had been rescheduled.

Tinubu, Marwa Charge States on Drug Use Prevention, Treatment | METROWATCH By Ibironke Ariyo

The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu has charged state governments to prioritise the fight against substance abuse in their strategic work plans for a safe and secure society.

Sen. Tinubu made the call at the opening ceremony of a two-day training on Drug Prevention Treatment and Care (DPTC), for spouses of state governors, on Monday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was organised by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Sen. Tinubu, who was the special guest of honour, tasked the states to see the war against the drug menace as a collective effort and responsibility.

The First Lady, represented by the wife of Inspector General of Police, Mrs Elizabeth Egbetokun, commended Marwa and the Nigerian Governors’ Spouses Forum for the initiative.

“I want to commend the NDLEA under the leadership of retired Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa for organising this vital training and for your ongoing efforts in combatting drug abuse in Nigeria,” she added.

According to her, Nigerians must recognise that drug abuse is not just a law enforcement issue but a public health crisis that requires a compassionate and multi-faceted response.

“We must challenge the stigma and discrimination associated with addiction, and foster a culture of empathy, understanding and solidarity towards those struggling with substance use disorders.

“As mothers, we understand the profound impact that drug abuse can have on our children’s lives.

“Therefore, it is incumbent upon us to protect, nurture, and guide them towards a future free from the shackles of addiction. As leaders in your respective states, you wield a unique platform to drive meaningful change.

“The role of Governors’ spouses in combating drug abuse cannot be overstated. Through advocacy, we can ensure access to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation services for

Disclose Details of SIECs’ Members, LGA Results’, or Face Legal Action, SERAP Tells 36 Governors | METROWATCH Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has urged Nigeria’s 36 state governors “to promptly disclose details of chairmen and members of the State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) in the states, including their qualifications and political affiliations, if any, and the mechanisms of their appointment.”

SERAP urged the governors “to provide to disclose the details of the results of local government elections conducted in their states since 1999, and the voters’ register for any such elections.”

SERAP also urged the governors “to clarify and explain how your states have complied with the requirements of the Nigerian Constitution 1999 [as amended] and international standards on the conduct of periodic local government elections in your states, including the details of any law regulating such elections in your states.”

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Mahmood Yakubu had last week alleged that, “the conduct of local government elections in virtually all states has become mere coronation of candidates of the ruling parties.”

In a Freedom of Information requests dated 1 June, 2024 and signed by SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare, the organisation said: “State governors have the constitutional responsibility to establish and allow independent electoral commissions to conduct local government elections fairly and impartially.”

SERAP said: “The reported interference by state governors in the operations of SIECs and apparent manipulation of local government elections are clearly incompatible with Nigerians’ right to effectively participate in their own government.”

2023 Elections Showed Yorubas Don’t Hate Igbos, Says Peter Obi | METROWATCH The 2023 Labour Party, LP, presidential candidate, Peter Obi has said the last general election showed that Yorubas don’t hate Igbos.

This was as Obi noted that the election was not a Christian or Igbo agenda.

Obi said the 2023 general election saw Nigerians unite across tribe and religious lines, adding that the poll corrected the impression that Yorubas hate Igbos.

The former Anambra State governor spoke while receiving the 2024 Courageous Citizen Award from the Nigerian-American Coalition for Justice and Democracy (NACJD) in Abuja on Saturday.

Obi noted that the massive turnaround was an indication that Nigerians desired a change from the status quo.

“It was a time that Nigerians united and spoke with one voice regardless of tribe, tongue or religion. The 2023 election wasn’t a Christian or Igbo project.

“It was a Nigerian project. I saw our legends and elder statesmen come together for the first time. I was glad to see people like former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Pa Ayo Adebanjo and others stand their ground.

“I am saying this to correct the impression that the Yorubas hate Igbo people. A lot of people made certain sacrifices because we just wanted to say ‘Enough is enough’ in Nigeria. Imagine those who had lost their lives for the cause of a new Nigeria,” he said

NAFDAC Bans Use of Sniper for Food Preservation | METROWATCH By Seyi Babalola

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC), has prohibited and highlighted the risks connected with dichlorvos, a chemical routinely used by dealers to protect food from spoiling.

As a result, the agency warned Nigerians about the dangers of employing harmful chemicals to preserve food.

Sayo Akintola, NAFDAC's Resident Media Consultant, issued a statement on Sunday expressing alarm over a new viral video showing people using harmful chemicals to preserve food products like as beans, stockfish, and crayfish.

It noted that the sale of small volume dichlorvos (100 ml or less), sold as Sniper has been banned since 2019 while the sale of the large volume (one litre) is limited to certified agrochemicals outlets, pointing out that NAFDAC underscores the toxicity of dichlorvos to human health, cautioning that its use can have fatal consequences.

The Director General, NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, according to the statement urged traders and merchants to desist from using unauthorised chemicals on food meant for human consumption.

She said that the misuse of dichlorvos poses significant risks to human health, manifesting in both short-term and long-term consequences, saying that long-term exposure can result in severe health implications, including developmental abnormalities in offspring, memory loss, reduced fertility, and potential carcinogenic effects.

She added that the adverse effects highlight the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to mitigate the risks associated with dichlorvos exposure.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the Bola Tinubu government to unite with the concerns of organized labour.

In a statement issued over the weekend by its president, Pedro Obi, NANS expressed sympathy with labor unions in their appeal for an increase in the national minimum wage.

While emphasizing present economic difficulty, the student body stated that the NLC demand is legitimate.

The statement reads: “We urge the Federal Government to respond promptly and favourably to the legitimate demands of Nigerian workers.

“The current economic realities have significantly eroded the purchasing power of the average Nigerian worker. Inflation, the rising cost of living, and the continuous devaluation of the naira have made it increasingly difficult for many families to meet their basic needs.”

Nigeria Volatile, Filled with Suffering, Says Obasanjo | METROWATCH Former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, said on Saturday that Nigeria was becoming more volatile, uncertain and complex.

He added that insecurity had made the country a dangerous place, filled with so much suffering and hunger.

For him, the leadership has to wake up to its responsibilities in other to create a better world for all Nigerians.

He said these in Lagos at the Africa Methodist Council Heads of Conference Summit and Women’s Movement Leadership Summit, where he was the Chairman of the public lecture.

The lecture’s topic, presented by the General Secretary, World Methodist Council, Bishop Ivan Abrahams, was, ‘Leadership in a Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous World’.

Obasanjo, giving his opening remarks asked that Nigerian leaders must re-evaluate the world.

“How do we re-evaluate the world? That is what I believe we have to do in our re-evaluating the world. What do we do? Jesus Christ himself told us that in this world, we would have trouble.

“I will give you two points. Wake up! We need a new generation of leaders; moral leaders, transformational leaders, and servant leaders.

“This new generation of leaders will lead by showing love and leading the re-evaluation and transformation,” he said.

Speaking further, he said, “Nigeria as it is now is volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous and dangerous.

“We have resources in Africa; we have 70 per cent of the world’s copper. Japan has no mineral resources. Singapore is even worse. No resources!

“But, whatever resources we have, if we are devoid of leadership, it won’t get us anywhere. That is why leadership in Africa is very important.

“We can’t create an Africa of hope, prosperity, devoid of oppression and one of security, peace and where leaders have vision, knowledge and understanding this way.”

Why I Find it Difficult to Make Friends — actor Jim Iyke reveals | METROWATCH By Seyi Babalola

Nollywood actor Jim Iyke has explained why he fails to make friends.

He explained that he cannot be friends with those who keep grudges.

On the 'Deep Dive' podcast, hosted by comedian Teju Babyface, Iyke revealed that his proclivity for growth is so rapid that many others can't keep up.

“We don’t hang around emotions. We don’t have time for it. That’s why I can’t be friends with everybody,” he said.

“I need somebody that won’t be hung up on my last act. I’m too transitional for it. My propensity for growth is at an alacrity that you can’t keep up with.

“Who I was yesterday is different from who I am today. So it’s not everybody that can keep up with that. I need somebody that I won’t call for 10 weeks and he is not in his feelings.

“There’s a time I didn’t call him for 4 months and he didn’t call me either. We don’t have to. But when we call, it’s value.

“I don’t want a friend that I am in your life every day. It’s never going to work because I will never show up for your kid’s birthday.

“You find me wanting at your anniversary. When you have certain issues I might not be the one to reach. But I tell you, when you call me and I sense that it’s not even a function of what you tell me, I sense that you need me, I’m going to move every mountain. So you decide the kind of friends you want.”
