Moving forward requires embracing peace and unity. It necessitates setting aside personal preferences and working towards a shared vision of a prosperous and united Nigeria. June 12: Nigeria’s democracy in bo***ge – Imasuagbon
...as he salutes Edo people, Nigerians on Democracy Day.....

A philanthropists and former governorship aspirant in Edo State, Barrister Kenneth Imasuagbon has said June 12 marked in our dear country as Democracy Day and It is a historic day that deserves to be celebrated.

"On that day in 1993, we the people of Nigeria stated our unreserved preference for true democracy. Though under military rule, we freely chose a transparent voting method. Our votes reflected our true choice as a people. Our choice on that day defied divisions of ethnicity, religion and region".

the current state of our politics tells a different story . Our democracy is deeply troubled while our nation’s destiny remains uncertain and precarious .

We remain a nation in search of solutions to too many basic problems. One of these is the search for a credible electoral system that would command the trust, confidence and belief of ALL Nigerians just like June 12 did.

In the spirit of June 12, therefore, we need to emplace an electoral system that commands the trust of the people. This is in recognition of the tenets and core values of democracy, which rests on respect for the wishes of the people as expressed in their ballots.

Above all, government must respect and protect the institutions of the democratic state by respecting the social contract with the people by meeting their needs, obeying their wishes and fulfilling the responsibilities of responsible governance as contained in the constitution. A cardinal responsibility of government in this regard is respect for the rule off law.

The challenge of June 12 and a dedicated Democracy Day is to inspire us to correct the errors of our recent elections. This is the surest way to restore the confidence of our people in the future of our nation and the promise of true democracy.

I however urge us all not to lose faith in the inbuilt design of our democratic system.

Cryptocurrency: Senate Called for the regulations, ensure some level of accountability

The Senate committee on capital market, on Monday, called for the regulation of cryptocurrency to ensure some level of accountability and protection of investor’s funds.

The chairman of the committee, Sen. Osita Izunaso, said this when he briefed journalists in Abuja after the committee’s screening of Dr Emomotimi Agama, the newly appointed director-general of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and three executive commissioners behind closed-door.

“The issue of cryptocurrency must be regulated because Nigerians are trading in crypto.

“Since Nigerians are trading in crypto, why are we not regulating it. Where is the money going if we don’t regulate activities in the crypto market?

“You can’t stop them from trading in the crypto market. So because we can’t stop them, you have to regulate it,” he said.

He also said that investing in stock exchange and capital market would help to boost Nigeria’s economy.

“President Bola Tinubu has told Nigerians that he is looking for a N1 trillion economy. That can only be done through the stock exchange, through the capital market.

“And I believe that we are going to see more of government activities in stock exchange, in capital market, in commodities exchange, in crypto.

“This is because these are the areas that will further inject money into the system.

“Because the problem we have is the problem of liquidity. We don’t have enough money, we don’t have enough liquidity in the system,” he said.

He added: “That is what is crushing the naira and making the naira so little when it’s competing with other currencies. But if we develop our capital market, develop our crypto market, we will bring more liquidity into the system.

Also speaking, Mr Agama promised to accelerate development of the capital market in a manner that would boost wealth creation, attract investments and create jobs for Nigerians.

Children’s Day: NGO wants FG to invest more in education

A non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Heart of Love Home Foundation, has called on the Federal Government to invest more in education to help secure the children’s future in the county.

Mrs Beauty Omoba, the initiative’s founder, made the call, in an interview with JIM TV to commemorate the 2024 Children’s Day celebration in Abuja.

Omoba urged stakeholders to join the over one billion voices around the world to call on the government to improve the quality of education and make it accessible to everyone.

“There is the need for the Federal and State governments to begin massive deployment of innovations and technology infrastructure in education delivery system in the country.

“Teachers must also be trained on how to use technology, which is cost efficient in the delivery of instruction to students wherever they are, either at school or home.

“The education system has no adequate provisions for the use of technology and other innovations to keep students learning during emergencies and prevent academic activities from coming to a standstill,’’ she said.

According to her, the clarion call was in line with the global campaign proposed for government among other things, increase and improve domestic financing for education in the country.

Mrs Beauty Omoba also called on the government to implement the Child Rights Act to help protect children and have access to quality and affordable education in the country.

“The Child Rights Act will improve the vulnerability of children in the country and assist their care givers to encourage people willing to assist them.

“Besides, when one girl-child is educated, a whole community is strengthened because educated girls delay marriage, have fewer children, earn a higher income and contribute to the community.

“We are calling on the government and other stakeholders to implement laws that would protect the less privileged and vulnerable children in the country,”

Children's Day: Imasuagbon calls for immediate action to boost school safety in Nigeria

To mark this year’s International Day of Education 2024, A Philanthropists, Barrister Kenneth Imasuagbon has stressed the need for concerted efforts to enhance school safety in Nigeria.

The former governorship aspirant also acknowledged the significant progress made in providing access to education for 7.2 million children in humanitarian settings across Nigeria.

Imasuagbon in a press statement who acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the government, donors and partners, revealed that a recent evaluation indicates that, on average, only 43 per cent of the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools are being met in about 6,000 assessed schools.

Barrister Kenneth Imasuagbon said: “While Nigeria has shown a commitment to creating safe school environments through endorsing the Safe Schools Declaration and developing the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools, there is room for further progress.”

He said the theme of the 2024 International Day of Education, “Learning for Lasting Peace,’ reminds the society of all of the crucial role that education plays in promoting peace and stability.

“It serves as a reminder to all stakeholders – including federal and state governments, development partners, civil society, communities, and educators – of the importance of providing safe, secure learning environments.

“Education is a key driver of gender equality, economic growth, and social development, sadly it remains inaccessible to many Nigerian children. Their educational journey is often disrupted by attacks on communities and schools, including the abduction of students. These challenges are particularly acute for adolescent girls, potentially stalling the progress made in girls’ education in Nigeria,”Imasuagbon added.

Imasuagbon further called for a multi-sectoral approach to improve school safety, informed by the performance of states on the Minimum Standards for Safe Schools.
