Leading the Way: How New Leaders are Transforming Africa

Africa is a continent on the rise, and nowhere is this more evident than in the emergence of a new generation of African leaders who are challenging old stereotypes and driving positive change. These leaders come from diverse backgrounds and fields, but they share a common vision of a better Africa, one that is prosperous, just, and united.

At the forefront of this new wave of leadership is a crop of young and dynamic politicians, such as Rwanda's President Paul Kagame, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio. These leaders have made significant strides in transforming their countries, from building modern infrastructure and promoting economic growth to promoting gender equality and combating corruption.

In the private sector, African entrepreneurs are also making their mark, with success stories such as Nigeria's Aliko Dangote, the richest man in Africa, and Kenya's Vimal Shah, the CEO of Bidco Africa, a leading manufacturer of fast-moving consumer goods. These entrepreneurs have not only created wealth and employment opportunities but have also demonstrated the potential of African businesses to compete globally.

But it's not just in politics and business where new leaders are emerging. In the arts and culture scene, African creatives are making a name for themselves, from award-winning filmmakers like South Africa's John Trengove and Nigeria's Niyi Akinmolayan to musicians like Burna Boy and Wizkid, who have taken Afrobeat to the world stage. These creatives are not only showcasing Africa's rich cultural heritage but also challenging stereotypes and promoting a more positive image of Africa.

At the heart of this new wave of leadership is a commitment to excellence, integrity, and inclusivity. These leaders are not content with the status quo, and they are not afraid to challenge the old guard and take bold steps to drive change. They understand that Africa's future depends on the quality of its leadership, and they are determined to lead by example.

As the new magazine launches, we are excited to highlight the stories of these new leaders and showcase the transformative potential of African leadership. We believe that by celebrating these stories and amplifying their voices, we can inspire a new generation of African leaders and accelerate the continent's transformation. Join us on this journey of discovery and inspiration as we explore the many facets of rising Africa.

Our choice of inspirational entrepreneurs who overcame challenges to achieve success is that of Ashish Thakkar, a young man from Uganda who founded the Mara Group, a multi-sector business conglomerate operating in 25 countries across Africa.

Thakkar's family fled from Uganda to the UK when he was just 12 years old due to political instability, and he dropped out of school at 15 to start his first business. He began by selling computers to his classmates and then expanded to other schools, eventually building a successful IT company.

In 2009, Thakkar started the Mara Foundation, a social enterprise that supports young entrepreneurs in Africa by providing mentorship, funding, and training. He also launched the Mara Mentor program, a free online mentoring platform that connects young entrepreneurs with successful business leaders.

Despite facing numerous challenges as an entrepreneur in Africa, including limited access to funding, corruption, and political instability, Thakkar remained determined to build his business and make a positive impact on the continent.

In 2012, he launched the Mara Launchpad, an initiative that provides funding and support to African startups, and in 2013, he opened the first Mara Mentor office in Nigeria. Thakkar has also been recognized for his philanthropy and was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2014.

Today, the Mara Group has over 14,000 employees and operates in industries such as technology, manufacturing, agriculture, and real estate. Thakkar's success shows that with determination, hard work, and a commitment to making a positive impact, it is possible to overcome even the toughest challenges and achieve great success as an entrepreneur in Africa.

22/03/2023

The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is one of the most significant economic initiatives on the African continent. With the aim of creating a single market for goods and services, as well as a free flow of investments and people, AfCFTA has the potential to transform the economies of the African continent.

The agreement was signed in March 2018 by 44 African countries and came into force in January 2021, making it the largest free trade area in the world by the number of participating countries. It covers a market of 1.3 billion people and a combined GDP of $3.4 trillion.

The main objective of AfCFTA is to promote economic integration and boost intra-African trade. By removing trade barriers and creating a single market, African countries hope to increase trade and investment, boost industrialization, and ultimately accelerate economic growth.

The agreement includes several key provisions, including the elimination of tariffs on 90% of goods traded between African countries, the establishment of a framework for trade in services, and the creation of a dispute resolution mechanism.

One of the main benefits of AfCFTA is the potential for increased trade between African countries. Currently, intra-African trade accounts for only about 17% of total African trade, compared to around 59% in Asia and 69% in Europe. With the elimination of tariffs and the creation of a single market, African countries can increase their exports to other African countries, which can lead to increased economic growth and job creation.

AfCFTA also has the potential to promote industrialization and the development of value chains in Africa. By creating a larger market, African countries can attract more investment and technology transfer, which can help to develop industries and increase production capacity.

Another key benefit of AfCFTA is the potential for increased competition and efficiency. With the elimination of tariffs and the creation of a level playing field, African businesses can compete more effectively and efficiently, which can lead to better prices and quality for consumers.

However, there are also potential challenges associated with AfCFTA. One concern is that the elimination of tariffs could lead to increased imports from outside Africa, which could negatively impact local industries. To address this concern, the agreement includes provisions for safeguard measures and rules of origin, which can help to protect local industries.

Another concern is the potential for unequal distribution of benefits among African countries. Some countries may benefit more from increased trade and investment than others, which could lead to disparities in economic growth and development. To address this concern, the agreement includes provisions for special and differential treatment for least-developed countries, as well as measures to promote regional integration and infrastructure development.

Overall, AfCFTA represents a significant step towards economic integration and development in Africa. While there are potential challenges and concerns, the agreement has the potential to transform the African economy and create new opportunities for businesses and individuals across the continent.

The recent restitution debate surrounding African art has raised important questions about ownership, provenance, and the ethical implications of the global art market. While concerns about restitution may have an impact on the classical African art market, a more holistic narrative of the continent's art history is in sight. As Adenike Cosgrove, the founder of Imo Dara, notes, a "tidal wave of change" is coming to the market for African art.

The boom in the market for modern and contemporary African art has contributed to this shift in taste, as has the increased attention on provenance research. As collectors and dealers in the African art market strive to define clearly what constitutes loot and what does not, a growing school of thought recognizes the need for a more inclusive and diverse approach to African art history.

The sustainability and inclusivity of the African art market are essential considerations for its future. While the concerns raised in the restitution debate are valid, it is equally important to recognize the potential benefits of the market, such as democratizing the art world and providing a new revenue stream for artists. By balancing these concerns, we can create a market that is sustainable, ethical, and inclusive for all.

As the Tefaf Maastricht 2023 approaches, the exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to showcase African art from across the continent, bridging traditional and modern art forms. While there may be concerns about the market for classical African art, there is no doubt that African art has a bright future. As collectors, dealers, and scholars come together to explore the rich and diverse art history of the continent, we can create a market that benefits everyone involved.

As we celebrate the rich history and culture of Africa, we would like to take a moment to reflect on an important moment in African history that has stood the test of time. The Great Zimbabwe ruins are one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Africa, and they offer a glimpse into the history and culture of the people who lived in southern Africa over 1000 years ago.

The Great Zimbabwe ruins were built between the 11th and 15th centuries and are a testament to the advanced engineering and architectural skills of the people who built them. The ruins consist of three main areas: the Hill Complex, the Valley Complex, and the Great Enclosure. The Hill Complex is believed to have been the royal palace, while the Valley Complex was the residential area, and the Great Enclosure was the ceremonial area.

The Great Zimbabwe ruins are not only a testament to the engineering and architectural skills of the people who built them but also to the rich cultural traditions of the African continent. The ruins are a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating our cultural heritage.

As we look to the future, let us remember the past and the importance of preserving our cultural traditions. Let us continue to celebrate the diversity and richness of African culture and history.

“Until the lion learns to write, every story will glorify the hunter.” - Chinua Achebe

Chinua Achebe (1930-2013) was a Nigerian writer and one of the most influential African authors of the 20th century. He is best known for his debut novel, "Things Fall Apart," which is considered a modern classic and has been translated into over 50 languages.

Achebe's work often explored the cultural and political complexities of postcolonial Africa, and he was a vocal critic of European imperialism and its effects on African society. He also served as a mentor and inspiration to many young African writers and activists, and was a prominent advocate for African literature and cultural identity.

The quote above is often cited as a powerful statement on the importance of representation and the need for marginalized voices to be heard. It suggests that the stories we tell are shaped by who has the power to tell them, and that until the voices of the oppressed are given equal weight, their experiences will continue to be misrepresented or overlooked.
