Nupe Indigenous Language Writers / Authors

Meet some Nupe Indigenous writers with their brief biographies. *This record is from ILLEC Nupe Language School, Minna, Niger State, Nigeria.*

1. Late Manman Jiya Vatsa was a Nigerian Military personnel, he wrote Nupe poems and some other genres of both Nupe & English books.

2. Late John Nmadu Yisa Doko was the first Air Force of Nigeria. He wrote a Nupe Grammar & a Nupe Counting system for his children. He took the step when he was challenged by siblings.

3. Alhaji Alhassan Wasagi is a Nupe writer and the Chief Imam of Wasagi village. He wrote Nupe Arithmetics and Nupe Orthography among numerous of pamphlets to his name. He assisted so many Masters and PhD students in their final year research projects.

4. Late Sheikh Saidu Enagi was a great Islamic Scholar, he was the first Nupe person who translated Quran to Nupe.

5. Rev. J.B Adams is a Nupe writer. He wrote Nupe Orthography and Ewo-wara among the over 15 Nupe books to his name. He was the first Nupe Teacher appointed by the late 12th Etsu Nupe; Alh. Dr. Umaru Sanda Ndayako.

6. Amb. Solomon Adama Yisa is a Nupe writer. He wrote Nupe Dictionary and he became the first Etan-Nupe. He is also a researcher of Nupe ancient words and the lead custodian of Nupe history as appointed by Alh. Dr. Yahaya Abubakar CFR Etsu Nupe.

7. Ass. Prof Ndagi Abdullahi is a Nupe writer. He wrote Nupe the Origin and Nupe Dictionary among the over 300 Nupe books to his name. He became the first Amana Nupe as a result of his most controversial book that says "All Nigerian Languages Originated from Nupe." So, he is a custodian of Nupe History.

8. Isyaku Bala Ibrahim nw, is a Nupe writer. He wrote Nupe Proverbs and Enyalo Nupe among over five Nupe books to his name. He assisted both Masters and PhD students in their final year research project work.

9. Alhaji Dauda Ibrahim is a Nupe writer. He wrote NDA the Nupe Man and Political Organization of Nupe People among over five Nupe books written to his name. He became the first Dan-Etan Nupe as a result of his stewardship to Nupe history.

11. Alhaji Baba Akote is a Nupe writer, he wrote a collection of Nupe poems, and he translated some books written by late Abubakar Gimba to Nupe.

12. Hon Prof Adamu Idris Manarakis niw is a Nupe Indigenous Writer. He wrote the first Indigenous Mathematics book (Nupe Mathematics) with numerals across the country. He is the Director of the first Indigenous Languages Institute in Nigeria. He wrote about 30 books in Nupe. He also established the first Pure Nupe Newspaper. Because of these three strongest reasons yet to be defeated, he became the first Nupe Language Honorary Causa Professor with Smart International Academy, London.

13. Late Rev. Thomas of Nupe Calvary Church Minna wrote Nupe Prima and other genres of Nupe books.

14. Hajiya Hadiza Ladan is a Nupe writer. She wrote Fulani Dynasty among other books. She is the first recognized Nupe women Historian.

15. Late Yakawu Bida wrote pamphlets on Nupe History and Grammar. He was a book warmer or a vendor distributing books.

16. Late Alh. Yusuf Manman Tsakpati was one of the earliest Nupe Radio broadcaster, he was known given names to words that were not in Nupe. He made efforts to save some words e.g Legenlege as University etc.

17. Sheikh Abdulrahman Aboki is a Nupe writer and Chief Imam Federal Poly Bida. He wrote Nupe Books on Nupe Hadiths, Songs and Islamic History to his name and he is working on so many genres in Nupe.

18. Mallam Isah Muhammad Awwal is a Nupe Writer. He wrote Nupe History booklets to his name and he is working on some other books in Nupe.

19. Barrister Yusuf Lakpyanya Bida is a Nupe writer. He is the first Nupe Son to Translate Nigeria Constitution from English to Nupe to his name and he is working on so many genres in Nupe.

20. Alhaji Dauda Abdulrahman Ndanusa is a Nupe writer, he wrote a Nupe book on short stories, poems, and Proverbs. He teaches Nupe Language at BITNUS in 2022.

21. Aisha Hussaina Idris Manarakis is a Nupe writer. She wrote Nupe Common mistakes and Nupe Novel among her other books. She became the First Nupe Novella after her over 20,000 Nupe words Novel. She won both National and International Awards for Nupe Translation.

22. Fatima Muhammad Majahidu is a Nupe writer. She wrote Nupe short stories. Her impeachable degree of writing Pure Nupe Short stories made her to be the leaving unmatchable Nupe Short story writer. She became the first Nupe Scientist after her first book in Nupe Science and Technology.

23. Munirat Ibrahim Edotsu is a Nupe writer. She wrote Nupe book on translation. She is the first Nupe Language study Audio Vocalist.

24. Fatima Isah Gbangban is a Nupe writer. Her affinity with children made her to write Nupe books for children. She sang Nupe Alphabets.

25. Hajiya Bilkisu Musa Bida is a Nupe writer. She is an Award winning Nupe writer of the first Nupe female Mathematician. She wrote Nupe Mathematics book to her name and she is working on so many genres in Nupe but yet to publish any.

26. Zainab Abdullahi Bida is a Nupe writer. She is an Award winning Nupe writer of the second Nupe female Mathematician. She wrote Nupe Mathematics book to her name and she is working on so many genres in Nupe. She recently published a book that won HIASFEST prize in 2023.

27. Tijjani Ibrahim Edotso is a Nupe writer. He is an Award winning Nupe writer. He wrote Nupe book on Nupe Grammar to his name and he is working on so many genres in Nupe.

28. Hussaini Mohammed Gana is a Nupe writer. He wrote Nupe book on Nupe Grammar to his name and he is working on so many genres in Nupe but yet to publish any.

I RECEIVED THIS MESSAGE THIS MORNING from A FATHER WHOSE WIFE IS A PROFESSOR AND HIS CHILDREN ARE DOCTORS. HE IS 25 YEARS IN PROFESSORSHIP. HE left a message BELOW ON THE STUDY OF NUPE LANGUAGE

"THE NUPE LANGUAGE GROUP.

I have not been hiding my position of admiration for the rapid development of Nupe Language in recent time. I have participated in some of their activities through virtual means involving their Nupe Language Students (who are usually very enthusiastic to learn) The structure put together by the Nupe Language Group is formidable and progressively minded. The young man Mallam Adamu ldris Manarakis who is nicknamed "Professor Honorary" is doing a lot for Nupe Language development with the ILLEC.

ILLEC is involved in various academic activities in its Nupe Language Development drive. So far, it has been a remarkable achievement by this group.

I have persistently in my engagements with the group in some topics of language development and the need to do so, insisted that other minority language study groups must borrow a leaf from this visionary ILLEC Nupe Group.

The group has been receiving support from well meaning Nupe citizens particularly from their Royal Highness, The Etsu Nupe. Recently, ILLEC came out with an Anthology of Poems Celebrating the Royal Highness, the Etsu Nupe: ETSU YAHAYA ABUBAKAR (A Collection of Nupe Poems Etsu Nupe) pp 110. l was invited to write the foreword of that publication in 2020.

In my interactive sessions with the ILLEC registered students for the Nupe Language Study, l severally urged the students on the need for owners of Nigerian minority languages to take up the challenge of rescuing and developing their languages to avoid the obvious risk of their languages disappearing in the face of globalization and its negative effects on local language development.

The NUPE LANGUAGE GROUP be commended in its sustained drive to take the Nupe Language to higher levels in the documentation and promotion of Nigerian Languages, particularly the languages of the ethnic minorities which have for long been neglected while the Hausa, Yoruba and Igbo languages have been substantially developed.

Congratulations ILLEC, never give up this positive struggle to take Nupe language your mother tongue to greater heights."

*THE FIRST NUPE NEWSPAPER TITLED; Eduko Esanwo Nupe Tashiru WAS FOUNDED ON 1st JANUARY, 2017*

The first Nupe Language Newspaper was Founded on 1st January, 2017 by Adamu Idris Manarakis niw, Nupe Language Professor Honourary, Tashiru Nupe & Founder /Director ILLEC.

The importance of communication, knowledge, and enlightenment is very vital to the development of any society.

The initiative of Adamu Idris Manarakis to produce the _EDUKO ESANWO NUPE_ _TASHIRU_ (first pure Nupe newspaper) is therefore very commendable. This Newspaper will surely encourage and proudly gladden the minds of the Nupe people in Nigeria and anywhere around the world. As expected, of any Newspaper, it will simplify and improve the understanding of happening in the larger society by the Nupe race.

In the aspect of education, _*EDUKO ESANWO NUPE TASHIRU*__ ,will improve the knowledge and understanding of the Nupe language by students worldwide. I personally commend the effort of our brilliant Director, Adamu Idris Manarakis Tashiru Nupe for this wonderful initiative. I pray and I hope our Government, our reputable and focused members of the society will support this impressive attempt by Adamu Idris Manarakis to project our lovely Nupe race to the world.

With this effort to publish _EDUKO ESANWO_ _NUPE TASHIRU_ the Nupe race is now in line with other vernacular publications such as _*IWE IROHIN*_ the first Newspaper in Nigeria which was established on 23rd November, 1859. It was founded at Abeokuta by Rev. Henry Townsend, a missionary from Exeter, England. It was first published as a Yoruba language fortnightly newspaper but it became bilingual when an English language supplement was added from March 8, 1860.

Between Yoruba Language and Hausa Language Newspapers was a gap of 80 years.

The first Hausa Language Newspaper _*GASKIYA_TA FI_ _KOBO*_ by Abubakar Imam was founded in 1939. This was an idea to shift Hausa Language from Arabic script language to also create a contemporary standard for Hausa grammar, spelling, vocabulary and style.

So, between Hausa Language and Igbo Language Newspapers was a gap of 77 years.

Therefore, the Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha unveiled the 1st Igbo language Newspaper known as "Ikoro Igbo" on 7th March, 2016.

So, between Igbo Language and Nupe Language Newspapers was just a year gap.

Since competition breeds progress, I am personally confident with the intelligence and professional knowledge of the director of ILLEC Adamu Idris Manarakis Nupe Language Professor Honourary, I am sure pretty soon _EDUKO ESANWO_ _NUPE TASHIRU_ will come out as a Newspaper of envy.

I am sure you are surprised I mentioned envy? Yes envy because we can beat our chest that Nupe Language is the fourth major Languages in Nigeria to host a publication of Newspaper.

The paper originally started on 1st January, 2017 after some rough attempts. It was aimed at producing the hardcopies monthly and after six months non-stop production, the energy was put to rest due to lack of patronage from the speakers of Nupe Language.

However, the idea was reinstated in January 2020. This time, it was a weekly production online. Due to some encouragements from few individuals, supporters, especially ILLEC Nupe Language students that were sending their stories, the progress lasted for two years and stopped at a point of no-more.

Finally, in January 2024, the Nupe Language Newspaper took another awesome dimension. It's a tool to compete with the superior Indigenous newspapers. The whole style is now daily bulletin online publication and today dated 20th March, 2024 marks the presentation of 100 days non-stop. Kudos to the contributors that send-in stories daily especially Aisha Manarakis, Zakari Fujeregi, Bashiru Musa Ebangi, Umar Salihu Adamu and the graphic designer; Alhassan Adam Alhaji from Tsonga Emirate of Edu Kwara State.

I therefore congratulate our amiable brilliant and focused Director, Adamu Idris Manarakis niw, Nupe Language Professor Honourary, Tashiru Nupe & Founder / Director ILLEC for his consistence in seeing that Nupe Language rubs shoulder with Languages of the world.

Madam Sarah Nnadzwa Jibril is a Nigerian politician, psychologist, social reform proponent and philanthropist. She is known for serving as the Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Ethics and Moral Values and for her advocacy of the emancipation and empowerment of Nigerian women and children. She is Nigeria's first female presidential candidate both at the primaries and main elections, having run for president on four occasions.
