𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗧𝗼 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗼𝗻𝗴𝘀
Speaking of upcoming artistes, we discovered that many have a hard time choosing the right producer for their music. And when a song is poorly produced, it sometimes leads to quarrels between the producer and artiste.
This doesn’t necessarily mean the producer or artiste is wack. It could just be a lack of chemistry and musical understanding between the two.
So, if you’re an upcoming artiste that hasn’t been able to find a producer to work with, allow us to share some tips on how to choose the right producer for your music!
𝟭. 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗿𝗲:
Do you know that music producers are also music fans? This means they too have a musical genre that they prefer, and the genre they prefer would be evident in their production styles.
This is why you need to understand a producer's preferred genre, and see if it matches with yours before you work with them.
If your producer is a staunch 90’s hip hop head, then you shouldn’t expect them to produce a standout Hi-life tune for you.
I’m not saying they can’t, I’m just saying your production has a better chance of success if you and your producer share interests in the same genre of music.
Just imagine Dr. Dre producing for Mercy Chinwo😋
𝟮. 𝗔𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗰𝗮𝗻’𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹:
Some producers are good with drums, but poor in mixing. Some are good with the keyboard, but are poor in song arrangement.
Once you understand this, then you’d realize that your producer doesn’t have to do it all.
For this reason, don’t look at your producer as a rookie if they bring in a guitarist, drummer, or mixing engineer to work on your music.
You should actually be glad they did, because it means the producer understands their strengths, and are willing to bring in other professionals on-board to make up for their weaknesses!
And it’s all in an effort to make your song as dope as possible!
I’ll use Dr. Dre as an example again. Do you know that Dre uses a lot of guest instrumentalists to make his beats?

𝟯. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱
Experience is the best teacher of a skill, including production. This is why you need to find out how long a producer has been active in the craft before you entrust your work in their hands.
With enough experience, a producer will understand their strengths and weaknesses. Experience will also make them understand your own strengths and weaknesses as an artiste.
And you know what they say – A problem can only be solved only when it has been identified.
An experienced producer will be able to identify the problems with your songs, and will know exactly what to do to fix it.
These are the kinds of producers you should work with!
𝟰. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗶𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀
It’s okay to pitch your song ideas to your producer. But also keep in mind that the way you envision a song at home could be different from the way your producer envisions it in the studio.
I can’t count how many times I’ve switched up an artiste's idea into something better. All I had to do was improve on the original idea they had, and the songs came out doper than they expected.
This wouldn’t have been possible without trust on the part of the artiste.
Sometimes, you just have to let the producer produce. Also keep in mind that there’s always room for improvement. And it is up to you to discuss any dissatisfaction you have with the finished product.
𝟱. 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗷𝗼𝗯, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸
Music production is hard, and it’ll be a shame if the brains behind it aren’t properly compensated for their work.
Simply put – Make sure you pay your producers what they ask for, or at least an amount that’s close to it.
As long as you’re sure the producer knows what they’re doing, then you shouldn’t be afraid to invest good money in them.
After all, you want to blow and make big money like Wizkid right?
The investment is worth it!
And guys, please don’t tell your producer things like – “Bros, abeg run am for me for that amount, you know say if my song blow then you sef don blow be that o”.

As an Artiste you are to understand what music is, and what the music business is. The Nigerian Music Industry has developed so much so that people earn a living from music, to the point that artistes’ like Wizkid can afford to buy a Porche which goes for over 50million without having to call on Mummy and Daddy.
If you have the mindset that music is business, then you will think like a business man. In business we invest to get returns, and so it is with music. No record label will want to sign someone that has not developed a brand for himself that they can invest in.
In an interview with Audu Maikori, president of Chocolate City he said ‘For you to get into Chocolate City system, you really must have worked on yourself. Like some of the artistes we are considering now, they are people that have been doing their own thing. You can’t walk up to me and say you are an artiste and you want a record deal with just two Facebook likes or followers, I won’t take you seriously. People are looking for content.
There are people with no talent with five thousand followers; that means they are actively engaging and doing something. It’s important that you have those followers because it shows me you have fans. How was Justin Bieber found on YouTube? He has fans and he was marketing himself.
Chocolate City will not wake up one day and say, ‘You, it looks like there is hope for you, lets sign you.’ No, you have to be active. You must be doing things. Then based on these things, we can say, ‘Wow, you need some support and we can sign you.’ Labels don’t change you, they add to what you already have.’
In an interview with Banky W, president of Empire Mates Entertainment, he said that you have to be doing your thing, attending shows etc, stressing that Skales and Niyola were discovered in shows, while they were doing their own thing.
TO GET SIGNED TO A RECORD LABEL IN NIGERIA
You have to
1. WORK ON YOURSELF/SONG: You have to ensure that your song is good, and acceptable. Get a very good production for your song. Listen to songs of top musicians and compare with yours, then fill the missing link.
2. CREATE A BRAND FOR YOURSELF: In the music industry, presence matters a lot. Remember, every business man or woman will want to invest in a fertile ground. Seeing they say is believing. They have to see something that will convince them to invest in you. They will only associate with you when they feel you are already successful. Locate a branding and packaging company that can help you in building a brand for yourself. Customize your wardrobe, have a website, etc.
3. LET THE WORLD KNOW ABOUT IT: To minimize cost as an upcoming artiste I advise you to make use of the new media (Internet, social media) create a buzz around you. Have a facebook fan page, twitter /youtube account and increase your fanbase.
Then you will attract the best record deal.

Studio sessions have become very expensive, so re-working the same song over and over again can take a lot out of an artiste's pocket.
But it doesn't have to be so, as there are simple tips you can use to finish your song with just one session!
𝟭. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻
There was this particular artiste who booked a session at the studio some time ago. We asked him if he had written the song, and he was like "dat one na small tin na, I go freestyle am like Wizkid".
After a long sequence of voicing and deleting, and voicing again, the artiste finally heeded my advice and decided to write the song. We got it done in the second session, but all we really needed was one.
𝟮. 𝗗𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲
One of the most tiring experiences in the studio is when an artiste tells us that he wants to sound like a particular artist e.g Kiss Daniel.
Don't do that. Be yourself!
𝟯. 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝘆𝗿𝗶𝗰𝘀
There's a huge advantage that comes with knowing the lyrics to your song before you step in the booth. Not that spitting it off a notepad is bad, but knowing it off-the-top of your head allows you to deliver more fluently over the mic!
The better you know your lyrics, the fewer the takes you will need to finish recording.
𝟰. 𝗕𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲𝗿'𝘀 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀
Truth be told, you might have an idea for a song, and you think you've figured it all out. But you get to the studio and discover that things aren't going exactly as you planned it in your head.
This is where you and your producer really need to ride together and exchange ideas. Be sure to keep an open mind and consider your producer's suggestions, as that could be the difference between a successful session and a failed session!
