NEWS UPDATE: FCT Minister orders indefinite closure of Abuja International market over crisis >>>>
FCT Minister Mohammad Bello has ordered the indefinite closure of Dei – Dei International Market following a clash between commercial motorcyclists and traders.
Recall that on Wednesday May 18, there was a crisis in the market after an unidentified female trader fell off a commercial motorcycle and was crushed to death by an articulated vehicle.
After inspecting the scene of the incident with FCT Commissioner of Police Sunday Babaji, Director State Security Services, other sister security agencies, and top FCT Administration officials, the Minister ordered that the market be shut down indefinitely. He charged the community and market leaders with finding the thugs responsible for the crisis.
The Minister stressed that there were no tribal or religious misunderstandings because all of the various community leaders had lived in peace for many years.
''The community and market leaders must fish out hoodlums and bad eggs among them, unfortunately, this time around hoodlums carry arms and they shot innocent people.
As a matter of fact, I saw four corpses this is very sad and totally unequivocally unacceptable in Abuja.
We have agreed with security agencies that full-scale investigations will be done, and the communities have to be part and parcel of the solution or else there will be no peace.
In the interim the timber market and the surrounding markets, including all the activities on-road that have clustered the road and made it unpassable will all stop untill the technical team reviews everything, and then we will take the next decision.”he said
Vice-Chairman, Timber Shed Market Dei-Dei, Ifeanyi Chibata, informed the minister and his team that 45 to 50 shops and 25 vehicles totaling over one billion naira had been set ablaze. Also, the Secretary Tomato and Onion Sellers Association Dei-Dei, Dahiru Mani disclosed that four persons were killed during the clash in the market.
He urged the minister to ensure that the market has a police division with sufficient personnel.

NEWS UPDATE: Many people have been reportedly killed and shops belonging to Igbo traders were set ablaze during a clash between traders and commercial motorcyclists at Dei Dei market in Abuja.
The fight reportedly started following an accident that led to the death of an Igbo woman.
According to reports, the woman was a passenger on a commercial motorcycle when she was crushed by a truck, allegedly due to the recklessness of the motorcyclist carrying her.
The woman died while being rushed to the hospital and this caused traders in the area to go after the motorcyclist carrying her when the accident occured.
The man's motorcycle was set ablaze when they caught up with him.
This led to a reprisal attack from motorcyclists in the area.

NEWS UPDATE: Finance minister suspends accountant-general over N80bn probe >>
Zainab Ahmed, the minister of finance, budget and national planning has suspended Ahmed Idris, the accountant general of the federation indefinitely.

In a letter dated May 18, 2022 and issued two days after his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N80 billion fraud, Ahmed said the suspension “without pay” was to allow for “proper and unhindered investigation” in line with public service rules.

While being suspended, Ahmed is not expected to come to the office or contact any official in his office except for any disciplinary hearing that may be advised.

The Court of Appeal has set aside the judgment of the Federal High Court in Umuahia that voided a section of the electoral act which barred political appointees from contesting in an election.
A three-member panel of the court headed by Justice Hamma Akawu Barka which deliberated on the case on Wednesday May 11, held that the Federal High Court Umuahia had no jurisdiction to have entertained the case because the plaintiff, Nduka Edede, lacked the locus standi to have filed the suit in the first place.
The appellate court held that Edede did not establish any cause of action to have warranted his approaching the court on the issue, because he did not establish that he was directly affected by the provision.
The court ruled on the appeal marked: CA/OW/87/2022, which was filed by the PDP, then struck out the suit marked: FHC/UM/CS/26/2022 which Edede filed before the Umuahia court.
However before the case was struck out, the court noted that the provision is unconstitutional because it violates Section 42 (1)(a) of the Constitution and denied a class of Nigerian citizens their right to participate in election.

“We had fruitful and quite incisive interactions impacting positively on all dimensions of Onyendu’s case, and he was adequately briefed on relevant “Onyendu is very firm in his conviction and unshaken in his resolve for a better tomorrow for UmuChineke. He reiterated the fact that UmuChineke must remain vigilant now more than ever, and he advised everyone to be conscious of their engagements.
He was very emphatic about being focused and never derailing. As usual, Onyendu expresses his profound gratitude to you all, UmuChineke for remaining strong in your solidarity, unshaken faith, and seemingly resolute.”

NEWS UPDATE: A two-story building collapsed in the Ago Palace Way area, Lagos state, barely a week after the collapse of a building in Ebute Metta which killed 10 people.
It was gathered that the two-story building located at Chris Igadi Street, off Ago Palace Way, opposite Kilimanjaro/ AP filling station, collapsed around 3 am on Saturday, May 7, 2022.
According to Punch, People residing in the building vacated the premises immediately after they saw the sign that it wanted to collapse two hours before the tragedy.
Confirming the incident, Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said no casualty was recorded.
Oke-Osanyintolu added that the site of the collapsed structure had been handed over to the Lagos State Building Control Agency.
He said, “The agency responded to the collapsed two-story building on Chris Igadi Street, off Ago Palace Way, opposite Kilimanjaro/ AP filling station, around 3am this morning.
“On arrival, information gathered from the residents revealed that the building gave signs several hours before it collapsed. Fortunately, nobody was trapped as all the occupants evacuated the area when the signs began two hours before the collapse.
“A headcount of occupants was carried out to ensure no occupants is missing and the remains of the building were cordoned off. The operation was concluded around 5:23 am. The site will be handed over to LABSCA and Ministry of Physical Planning for further investigation.”
It's unclear if the two-storey building had been marked for demolition by the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) before it collapsed.
