PRESIDENT BUHARI SET TO TRAVEL OUT OF NIGERIA

President MUHAMMADU BUHARI is scheduled to leave Abuja for Addis Ababa for the second term inauguration of the Ethiopian Prime Minister, ABIY AHMED, taking place on Monday.

Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr FEMI ADESINA revealed this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja, adding that the President will depart Abuja for the Ethiopian capital on Sunday.

The statement noted that President BUHARI would deliver a goodwill message at the inauguration ceremony.

It further stated that the Nigerian leader would also attend a State Banquet in honour of visiting Heads of State and Government.

ADESINA disclosed that BUHARI will be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, GEOFFREY ONYEAMA and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ambassador AHMED RUFAI ABUBAKAR.

The President is expected to return to Abuja on Tuesday.

Recall that the Prime Minister, AHMED secured another term in office, following the victory of Ethiopia’s Governing Prosperity Party in the parliamentary election in June 21.

In his congratulatory message to the Prime Minister earlier, BUHARI had assured that Nigeria will continue to support the unity and territorial well-being of Ethiopia and all African States.

Tribalism is a serious crime in Rwanda. They banned the recognition of tribes after the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, which led to the deaths of one million people.

Nobody is allowed to identify or discriminate based on tribes. That's how Rwanda succeeded and became the no. 1 African country.

No more Hutus, Tutsis, Twa. The only Tribe, ethnic group recognized by the Rwandans is 'Rwanda'.

Congratulations Rwanda!
Congratulations Paul Kagame!

ALL CIVIL SERVANTS IN NIGERIA OUGHT TO OWN A HOME - VP OSINBANJO

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has called for a reform of the Nigerian civil service by doing “something bold and big that will make a difference.”

According to him, a mass housing policy for all civil servants fits into this “bold and big” agenda, a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Laolu Akande on Friday said.

Prof Osinbajo reportedly made the comment on Thursday at the Presidential Villa when he received a brief on the Federal Civil Service Strategy & Implementation Plan 2021-2025, presented by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan.

The meeting is a Presidential Level Briefing of the reform process of the Federal Civil Service which has been on since 2017.

The reform is being led by Steering and Implementation Committees with membership drawn from the public and private sectors with the engagement of development partners.

Thursday’s meeting was attended by the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr Abubakar Malami; Ministers of Labour & Employment, Dr Chris Ngige; Finance, Mrs Zainab Ahmed; Ministers of State, Budget & National Planning, Prince Clem Agba; and Works and Housing, Engr. Abubakar Aliyu.

The Special Adviser to the President on Economic Matters, Dr. Adeyemi Dipeolu, some of Nigeria’s development partners including officials of the World Bank and the President of the Africa Initiative for Governance, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, (a private sector representative and member of Steering Committee) were also present.

Speaking after listening to Dr Yemi-Esan’s presentation and subsequent contributions by ministers and other participants at the meeting, the Vice President noted that “it is evident that perhaps, for the first time in a long time, some very serious attention is being paid to all of the various issues in our civil service.”

According to Osinbajo, “I think that we should really do something that is bold, big and that will really make the difference in order to address some of the issues especially that of accommodation for civil servants.

“We can do much more with mass housing. We have a target now of 300,000 houses under our ESP social housing scheme. CBN has allocated N200 billion, but we have seen that we can provide mass housing, and we can make civil servants beneficiaries of the scheme.”

“Though the housing scheme is very modest, it is the sort of thing that we can at least do, to begin to take into account, the fact that everybody who worked for the civil service deserves to live in their own home. There must be a strategy for giving everybody a place to live in,” Osinbajo added.

Making the point about access to affordable homes being one of the easiest ways to get people out of poverty, Prof Osinbajo said “it is a vital part of what we are trying to do”, noting that “we must address it. A civil servant ought to be able to own a home, and justify to his family the reason why he went for the job”.

Relating his experience while serving as Attorney General in Lagos State, Prof. Osinbajo said that like what was done with the reform of the Lagos State Judiciary, fixing the welfare of federal civil servants would be key to addressing challenges associated with productivity and corruption.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation also presented a report on the implementation status of the Federal Civil Service Strategy Plan 2017-2021.

Earlier in her presentation, Dr Yemi-Esan identified staff welfare particularly, remuneration and housing as areas that require better focus and urgent intervention by the Federal Government.

She appealed for improved support, particularly in funding the implementation of successive strategy and implementation plans to overhaul the service for better productivity.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation said the current reform in the Federal Civil Service has enabled government to save huge sums through the verification of personnel payroll and digitization of some operations, among others.

The Head of Service would continue to lead the reform process as the 2021-2025 plan goes forward to the Federal Executive Council for approval.

Thursday’s meeting featured comments and observations on the proposed plan tabled on behalf of the Steering Committee chaired by the Head of Service.

DON'T TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE WEAKNESS OF THE NEXT PERSON

Kenyan runner, ABEL MUTAI was only a few meters from the finish line but got confused with the signs and stopped, thinking he had finished the race.

A Spanish man, IVAN FERNANDEZ was right behind him and realizing what was going on, started shouting to the Kenyan to keep running.

MUTAI did not know Spanish and did not understand what he was being told.

On realizing what was going on, IVAN FERNANDEZ pushed MUTAI to victory.

Then, a reporter asked Ivan, "Why did you do this?" IVAN replied:

"My dream is that one day we can have some sort of community life, where we push ourselves and help each other win."

Prodding further, the reporter insisted: "But why did you let the Kenyan win"?

IVAN replied, "I didn't let him win, he was already going to win. The race was his."

The reporter insisted and asked again, "But you could have won!"

IVAN looked at him and replied: "But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of this medal? What would my Mother think of it"?

QUESTION:

What values do we teach our children and how much do you inspire others to earn?

Most of us take advantage of people's weaknesses, instead of helping to strengthen them.

I hope you learn from this story. Most times winning the medal is not the ultimate price.

ÒGBÓRÍ ELÉMÒSÓ: A HISTORY OF A YORUBA TOWN

Ògúnlolá was the name of the brave hunter and an expert archer, he was said to be of Ibariba descent. In the mid-17th century he migrated with his wife, Èsùu to the present site known today as Ọ̀gbómòsó, he first settled under a tree called Ajagbon (still standing near the king's palace).

Later on Ògúnlolá discovered that there were people who have settled in that area before him, he then went to introduce himself and fortunately they were also hunters just like him, they were; Aale, Onisile, Orisatolu and Akande. Though, Ògúnlolá established his dominance over his fellow hunters, the brave men agreed to form a society called Alongo in other to protect the settlement from wild animals and slave raiders. It was on this initiative that Ògúnlolá killed an Ijesa itinerant trader, thinking he was a slave raider. Ògúnlolá was jailed because of this capital offence.

While he was awaiting his trial, a troubling report of a dreadful attack on Oyo-Ile spread through the palace and among the prisoners, it was said that a certain warrior called "ELÉMÒSÓ" is wrecking havoc and causing great tension. Being a fearless warrior himself, Ògúnlolá offered his services to the Alaafin, he promised that he would bring elémòsó's head if granted freedom. Upon his release Ògúnlolá crept into the opposition camp and shot elémòsó with an arrow before beheading him. He brought the head to the Alaafin and the whole kingdom rejoiced.

The Alaafin persuaded him to stay in Oyo-Ile but he insisted, he said to the Alaafin "e jé kín lo má ṣe òhún", "let mẹ go and stay far away". This was how the title "Soun Ọgbomoso" was coined. Ògúnlolá returned to his settlement a nobleman, having been decorated and greatly rewarded by the Alaafin for his bravery.

Later, travelers started referring to the settlement as “ìdóo eni tí ó gbórí elémòsó” meaning the settlement of him who beheaded Elemoso, and this was how the present day Ogbomoso derived its name.

The story was adapted into a movie by Chief Lérè Paimo who played the role of Ògúnlolá.
