Leading without Tears
by Olusola Joshua Opaleye

"Emotional intelligence is the key to being a great leader. It is about having empathy and the ability to stay calm under pressure."-Robert K. Greenleaf

Leadership is tough, especially for those who lack emotional intelligence. With the complexities of human nature, leadership demands the ability to navigate the different shades of followers' characters and attitudes, consistently making the right judgments and decisions to achieve organizational goals.

While leadership involves overcoming obstacles and challenges, it shouldn't always be emotionally traumatic. Because leadership isn't punishment, a leader can learn to lead without tears.

The first step to effective leadership without tears is self-awareness. A leader must be self-aware because how can you lead others without first leading yourself? Understanding your emotions and triggers will enable you to manage yourself in the heat of the moment. This shouldn't be seen as hiding or suppressing your emotions but managing them in acknowledgment and proper channeling in the most constructive way. It is aligning your emotions for the actualization of a greater goal, which ultimately is the objective of the group or organization you are leading.

When you're aware of your own emotions, you're better equipped to respond to the emotions of your team members.

Clear communication is another essential component of leading without tears. When you communicate clearly and respectfully, you avoid misunderstandings and miscommunications that can lead to frustration and anger. Make sure to listen actively, ask questions, and clarify expectations to avoid confusion. And when conflicts arise, address them promptly and fairly, without resorting to emotional outbursts.

Empathy is also crucial for leading without tears. When you understand and acknowledge the perspectives and emotions of your team members, you build trust and rapport. This doesn't mean you have to agree with everyone, but rather that you value and respect their input. By showing empathy, you create a safe and supportive environment where your team feels comfortable sharing their ideas and concerns.

Leading without tears also requires a sense of humor. When you can laugh at yourself and the absurdities of life, you diffuse tension and create a more relaxed atmosphere. Humor helps to break the ice, build connections, and put things into perspective. Just be sure to use appropriate humor that won't offend or alienate your team members.

Managing stress and burnout is another way of effective leadership without tears. Quite often, emotional outbursts from leaders, with eventual negative impacts on the organization, result from reactions in very low moments when they are under immense pressure and stressed out. A leader must prioritize self-care by engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation. He must also take heed to set boundaries to ensure a healthy work-life balance.

Finally, leading without tears means leading by example. When you demonstrate calmness, composure, and emotional intelligence, your team is more likely to follow suit. Show your team that you're a leader who is in control, yet approachable and empathetic. By doing so, you'll create a positive and productive work environment where everyone can thrive.

In conclusion, leadership comes with its emotional demands; however, the ability of a leader to successfully navigate the varieties of emotional displays is what makes a leader effective. Leading without tears is a skill that can be developed with practice, self-awareness, and empathy. By communicating clearly, showing humor, and leading by example, you can become a more effective and respected leader. Remember, leadership is not about being perfect but about being human and relatable. So, take a deep breath, stay calm, and lead your team to success without tears.
