“Wheat is the third most widely consumed grain in Nigeria after maize and rice.
According to the NBS report, durum wheat import accounted for 6.2% of the total import bill recorded in the review year, representing the second-highest contributor to Nigeria’s import bill and the highest imported food item.
However, the recent invasion of Russia in Ukraine has sent the prices of wheat to record high, further affecting the global wheat supply value chain.

Nigeria, Africa's biggest economy, is currently facing a 'foodprice crisis' as the prices of common staple foods continue to skyrocket beyond the reach of the 'common man.'
Millions of its citizen are going to bed hungry everyday, with many barely affording one meal a day, a situation worsened by the deficiencies in the country's agricultural value chain.
According to the latest data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), food inflation in Nigeria stood at 17.13% in January, 2022.

The year 2021 was a memorable year for the Nigerian agriculture sector.
The industry witnessed positive growth through the year, although at a considerable slow pace.
According to NBS, the sector grew by 1.22% year on year in the Third Quarter of 2021, contributing 29.94% to Nigeria’s overall GDP.
But despite the advancements, especially in efforts to meet the UN’s #SDG2 of achieving #ZeroHunger by 2030, the year didn’t end without some unpleasant news.
As we usher in the New Year, we reviewed the happenings in the sector in 2021, the progress made, negative developments, and ground-breaking initiatives.
