The Empty Jar

A wise professor placed an empty jar in front of his students and filled it with golf balls, asking if it was full. They nodded. Then, he added pebbles, which filled in the spaces between the golf balls. Again, he asked, and they said yes. Finally, he poured sand into the jar, filling every tiny space.
