By Matthew Eloyi

The Concerned Citizens of the Northeast (CCN), a prominent socio-political organization dedicated to promoting good governance, peace, and holistic development in northeastern Nigeria, has announced its plans to bestow a special recognition award on two distinguished figures for their exceptional contributions to the region’s security and well-being.

The organization, known for its advocacy for democratic values and social progress, will honor the Executive Governor of Borno State, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, and former Chief of Army Staff Ambassador Tukur Yusufu Buratai, CFR, in a ceremony to celebrate their remarkable leadership and service.

Governor Zulum is set to receive recognition for his outstanding leadership in maintaining peace within Borno State and his relentless efforts in delivering essential services that have significantly enhanced security and fostered a sense of safety among the populace. His strategic vision and commitment to the welfare of his citizens have earned him praise and admiration from both within and outside the region.

Ambassador Buratai, renowned for his decisive role in the liberation of the Northeast region from the scourge of Boko Haram during his tenure as Army Chief, will also be honoured for his strategic vision, commitment to counterinsurgency operations, and efforts in stabilizing the security landscape. His dedication to protecting the lives and property of the region’s residents has been a driving force behind the restoration of peace and stability in the area.

The CCN expressed its deep appreciation for Governor Zulum and Ambassador Buratai, recognizing their outstanding service and achievements as exemplary models of leadership and dedication. The organization views this award as a fitting tribute to their tireless commitment to the welfare and security of the people in the Northeast region, and as a symbol of gratitude for their significant contributions to the region’s progress and prosperity.

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum has approved the distribution of food palliative to over 100,000 families in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Area.

He reiterated his government's commitment to ensuring the welfare of Borno’s citizens, particularly to families struggling to access basic necessities, especially in the face of rising food prices and economic challenges.

Zulum announced the approval on Thursday during a meeting with ward working committee, including traditional rulers, elders and community leaders.

“I have approved the distribution of palliative to 100,000 families in MMC and Jere Local Government Area to ease the hardship faced by our people in the wake of the rising cost of food and other essential goods,” Zulum said.

The Governor added, “We will start the distribution in the coming days. We will start with the wards in the heart of the city, Shehuri North and South, Feezan, Hausari, Gamboru and Mafoni. In each ward, at least 4000 vulnerable families will benefit.”

Zulum assured that the distribution will be conducted in a transparent and accountable process to ensure that the assistance reaches those who need it the most.

Meanwhile, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum also ordered the distribution of the food palliative in seven Local Government Areas in the southern part of the state.

These Local Governments include Biu, Hawul, Shani, Kwaya Kusar, Askira-Uba, Chibok and Bayo.

The governor noted that his administration has been frequently distributing cash and food items in the Local Government Areas affected by the Boko Haram insurgency to enhance livelihood and prevent vulnerable residents from being recruited by terrorists.

Since November last year, about 187,454 households from Dikwa, Ngala and Bama Local Government Areas received Zulum’s food palliative and over N0.6b cash.

Zulum stated that the southern Borno palliative will be launched in Biu in the coming weeks to extend the gesture to communities that have attained relative peace and residents have their sources of livelihood.

Governor Zulum said that despite the efforts in agriculture, there is a need to address the immediate needs of vulnerable families.

Maiduguri: Zulum gives 72 hours for demolition of illegal brothels, criminal dens at ‘Bayan Quarters’

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, on Tuesday, directed the demolition of illegal brothels and criminal dens notorious for prostitution, gangsterism and other illicit activities within 72 hours.

Zulum gave the directive during a visit to the scene at ‘Bayan Quarters’, a settlement around railway staff quarters, in Maiduguri.

The area harbours gangsters, criminal activities and minors for commercial s*x activities.

The governor expressed concern over the rise in criminal activities associated with these illegal brothels and criminal dens, including prostitution, drug peddling, and other illicit operations.

He noted that these activities not only pose a threat to the security of the state but also perpetuate social vices that undermine the well-being of communities and the dignity of the individuals involved.

Zulum explained that while the settlement which harbours criminals and minor girls for commercial s*x activities will be demolished in 72 hours, the illegal brothels, however, have 12 hours to vacate.

“The government has been duly informed of the activities that are going on here, this settlement is completely illegal. People are killed here, this place serves as a breeding space for insurgents. Therefore, I have directed that everybody should vacate the place,” Zulum said.

Zulum also announced the revocation of the land title where such criminal activities were perpetuated, which he said was initially approved for use by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.

“I understand that this land was approved by Borno State Government to be used by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), but unfortunately, it's been rented out illegally with all forms of criminal activities taking place. For this reason, the government has revoked the earlier approval and henceforth, the land belongs to Borno State Government”, Zulum said.
