STATE HOUSE PRESS STATEMENT

PRESIDENT BOLA TINUBU'S STATE VISIT TO QATAR

We are aware of a leaked diplomatic correspondence between the Embassy of the State of Qatar in Abuja and our Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s state visit to Qatar between 2 and 3 March, 2024.

The leaked diplomatic paper by mischief makers about an investment forum is not in any way a snub on President Tinubu by the Qatari government.

The Note Verbale is about a private sector-led Business and Investment Forum to be held on the margins of President Bola Tinubu's State Visit.

The event is being put together by the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA) and Qatar's Chambers of Commerce and Industry where business people from Nigeria will engage their counterparts from Qatar on commercial and investment opportunities available in both countries.

We note the strong bilateral relationship between our two countries and affirm that the State Visit by President Bola Tinubu to Qatar is on the invitation of the Emir of Qatar, His Highness, Sheik Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani.

The State Visit is particularly aimed at strengthening the bilateral economic cooperation between Nigeria and Qatar.

NACCIMA and Qatar Chambers of Commerce and Industry are collaborating to take advantage of President Tinubu's visit to Doha to mobilise the business community from our two countries to explore opportunities in key economic sectors such as oil & gas, manufacturing, agro-business, construction, real estate, ICT, Renewable Energy, Solid Minerals and service sector, among others.

President Tinubu is expected to proceed to Qatar on the State Visit as scheduled and during the visit, the Nigerian leader will engage in high-level bilateral discussions with Qatari leader on many important matters, covering the full range of diplomatic and economic issues.

It is not correct for anyone to insinuate that the Qatari authorities have snu

We'll produce a better Electoral Act for 2027 elections – Speaker Abbas

…as 10th House, EU partner on women, youth political empowerment

“I want to particularly express our appreciation to the European Union for all the supports and contributions that you have been giving the Nigerian Government, and by extension the Nigerian Parliament since 1999.

I want to assure you that the 2027 election will be a better election than the 2023. And the laws that we are going to review would be the best for this country.

On Women Empowerment;

Women in Nigeria require additional support. It is not easy for a woman to emerge (as a candidate) in any political party. It is not easy for any woman to actually emerge victorious in any election. They need to be supported.

Our vision is for the women who are here today to be reelected in 2027 and beyond, but that cannot be possible unless we showcase these women as role models, to serve as inspiration for other women who may want to aspire to be legislators in the future. The only way we can do that is by giving them special assistance, that is why in the 10th House, women are accorded prominence.

On Youth;

Youths in the chambers are also given prominence, a special committee known as the Committee on Youth in Parliament was established for members under the age of 45.

Additionally on the issue of women, I want to assure you that this constitutional amendment that we are just about to take off, we would give all the resources needed to ensure that this time around women representation was taken seriously – not only in the legislature but also the executive. We will do everything humanly possible to ensure that we do not repeat what happened in the 9th Assembly.

PRESIDENT TINUBU TO 36 STATE GOVERNORS: THERE MUST BE ZERO TOLERANCE FOR INCOMPETENCE; SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS TO BOOST FOOD PRODUCTION AND REMOVE RENT SEEKERS

President Bola Tinubu says his administration is evolving home-grown solutions to address the nation's food security challenges by setting up schemes to support local production and discourage all forms of rent-seeking that are associated with food importation.

The President made the declaration at a meeting with 36 state governors, attended by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the National Security Adviser, the Inspector-General of Police, the Director-General of the DSS, and some ministers at the State House in Abuja on Thursday.

On security, President Tinubu approved the establishment of a committee comprising state governors and representatives of the federal government to, among other things, explore the modalities for establishing state police.

The President further endorsed the training and equipping of forest rangers by sub-national governments to safeguard human and natural resources in local communities.

''My position at this meeting is that we must move aggressively and establish a committee to look critically at the issues raised, including the possibility of establishing state police.

''From Kano, we have read reports about large-scale hoarding of food in some warehouses. The National Security Adviser (NSA), the Inspector-General of Police, and the Director-General of the Department of State Services should coordinate very closely and ensure that security agencies in the states inspect such warehouses with follow up action.

''We must ensure that speculators, hoarders, and rent seekers are not allowed to sabotage our efforts in ensuring the wide availability of food to all Nigerians.

''What I will not do is to set a price control board. I will not also approve the importation of food. We should be able to get ourselves out of the situation we found ourselves in, because importation will all

The Federal Government has hinted at plans to establish a National Commodity Board as a solution to the escalating food inflation in the country.

In tackling price volatility, the board will be given the mandate to assess and regulate food prices, as well as maintain a strategic food reserve for stabilizing prices of crucial grains and other food items.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this on Tuesday during a two-day high-level strategic meeting on climate change, food systems, and resource mobilization held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

New Year Address of the Executive Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, to Staff of the Commission

Dear Colleagues,

Let me commence this address with the usual compliments of the New Year: Happy New Year to you all! No doubt, the preceding year threw up monstrous challenges on the corporate strength of the Commission. We sailed through by the grace of God and our resilience as an entity marked for greatness.

My appointment as Executive Chairman came in the last quarters of 2023 and we have been able to stabilize the system and roll out fresh initiatives and policy direction for the Commission. I want to thank all of you for your roles so far in this new dispensation.

As you would recall, our new policy drive is premised on a three-pronged agenda and blueprint. The first plank of the agenda is proper focusing of the mandate of the EFCC. All over the world, the major objective of war against corruption and financial crimes is to drive economic development, create wealth and job opportunities for the populace. We need to come to these realities and operate by them. Our nation is in dire straits. We need to continue to do everything possible to stimulate the revenue profile of Nigeria.

There is no Agency of government as crucial to the nation’s quest for growth and development as the EFCC. We have all it takes to bring up the profile and developmental index of our nation. I urge all of you to be steadfast and committed to this clarion.

The second plank of our policy direction is putting modalities in place for running the administration and governance of the nation at various levels in a most responsible, accountable and transparent manner as well as building and promoting the international image and reputation of Nigeria in the eye of the world as a country that is worthy of attracting foreign direct investments. To achieve all these, preventive mechanisms against corruption, adherence to the rule of law and engagement

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday in Abuja thanked former President Muhammadu Buhari for his visionary leadership of Nigeria and commitment to probity, propriety, and service.

Speaking at the launch of two books on the former President; Working with Buhari: Reflections of a former Special Adviser to the President, Media & Publicity, by Femi Adesina, and Muhammadu Buhari: The Nigerian Legacy, by Dr. Udu Yakubu, President Tinubu said Buhari demonstrated integrity and transparency in leadership.

The President said the former President has kept his word not to interfere in government matters after leaving office.

“When you left office, you left a lot of pens and files for me for continuity. I inherited the liabilities and assets of my predecessor.

“You told me it will be difficult to please everyone as a leader. You advised that I should work hard and satisfy my conscience,” he said.

President Tinubu stated that former President Buhari inherited a tottering economy and an overwhelming security situation, but that the former President was able to start the process that would guarantee stability.

“I am glad that history has been reintroduced in our schools, and this will be part of our curriculum,’’ the President said on the books.

Earlier today, the Group CEO of NNPC Ltd., Mr. Mele Kyari, and the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, were in Oporoza, Warri, Delta State, to inspect MT Kali, an illegal crude oil vessel loaded with thousands of metric tonnes of crude oil, intercepted by Tantita Security Services, a private security firm, in collaboration with the Nigeria Security & Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), while it was loading directly from an offshore platform in Bayelsa State.

All 23 crew members onboard the illegal vessel have been arrested.

During the inspection tour of the illegal vessel on Monday, General Musa said the military remains committed to working with NNPC Ltd. and other government and private security agencies to halt the menace of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta.

"We are committed to stopping all acts of criminality in Nigerian waters. We are also sounding a note of warning to the perpetrators of this crime that enough is enough.

"The country is bleeding, and we need all funds to develop as a nation. It is by stopping these acts of criminality that we will be able to achieve that dream," the CDS added.

"In the past 40 years, a few people were cornering our common wealth, and calling it subsidy, but I call it wasteful. Right now, we are all bearing and sharing that pain. But things are looking up. Things will get better for the good of all Nigerians. With me, there is hope.

"I assure you that there will be substantial development in education for your children; priority on industrialization; healthcare will receive more allocation and attention. We will train more health workers," the President said.

President Tinubu commended Governor Uzodinma for his stewardship in Imo State, describing him as the "real hope" of the state.

Speaker Abbas hails gallant Armed Forces, salutes fallen heroes

The Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, has hailed the Nigerian Armed Forces for their gallantry and patriotism, saying they remain one of the best in the world.

Speaker Abbas said this in his message to commemorate this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day, which is marked every January 15, to mourn and celebrate Nigeria's fallen heroes.

The Speaker stated that Nigeria would not have been able to experience prosperity if the country was not safe and secure for businesses and other economic activities to thrive.

This, he said, underscores the critical role of the Armed Forces in the general wellbeing of the nation.

Speaker Abbas noted that while parts of the country still experience security threats, the Armed Forces have risen to the occasion most times.

He, however, urged the military, security and intelligence agencies to do more in securing lives and property, which he noted is the primary responsibility of the government.

The Speaker equally mourned security agents who have died in the line of duty, describing their deaths as heroic sacrifice. He said the supreme prices they paid in their efforts to make the country liveable would not be forgotten.

Speaker Abbas said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has significantly boosted the morale of service men by rejigging the security architecture, compensating the families of fallen heroes, as well as clearing backlogs of unpaid salaries and allowances to serving and retired service men.

S/Court: Tinubu's non-Interference Saved Democracy, Rekindled Hope in Judiciary - Sen Marafa

Zamfara State Coordinator of the Campaign Council of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senator Kashim Shettima during the 2023 general Ji elections, Senator Kabiru Garba Marafa, has said that the non-interference of the president in the judgment of the Supreme Court on governorship tussles has saved the country's democracy and rekindled hope in the judiciary.

The Supreme Court had on Friday affirmed the elections of eight governors including Abba Kabir Yusuf (Kano), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi State), Alex Otti (Abia) and Bassey Otu (Cross).

Senator Marafa, in a statement he signed and issued in Abuja, on Monday, said President Tinubu and the justices of the apex court have lived up to the expectations of Nigerians, saying posterity will judge them well for allowing the will of the Nigerian voters to prevail.

He commended the president, who according to the Governor of Kano State, stood his grounds not to interfere with judicial processes despite all pressures to do so by party loyalists.

"It is a welcome development. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has by this singular action of non-interference in the Supreme Court judgement saved the country's democracy and forestalled the repeat of the 1983 scenario. You will recall that it was after the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) grabbed states that were hitherto of the opposition that the Second Republic collapsed," he said.

Hailing the justices of the Supreme Court, Sen Marafa said they have lived up to the expectations of the Nigerian masses, adding that they have made the country proud and have written their names in gold.

Marafa, who represented Zamfara Central Senatorial District between 2011 and 2019, said the outcome of the apex court decision on the governorship elections has reinforced his belief in the ability and capac

My friend, Isa Gusau — A Tribute, By Kashim Shettima

There couldn't have been a more poignant last chapter to a man's life than my final text exchange with him. He reached out on December 31, 2023, to draw my attention to a Qur'an recital competition in Damaturu, Yobe State, stating that it transpired without deserving prizes. In his typical fashion, he outlined interventions that could align with the noble ambitions of the reciters and organisers. What he didn't say this time around, while preferring the cloak he wore to redirect our concerns away from his health and towards others, was that he was on the brink of existence. He was in a hospital bed far away from home.

About a year earlier, Mallam Isa Gusau visited me at home in Abuja, and I couldn't help but notice his sickly physical transformation. He opened up about his health struggle only when I insisted. I disagreed with his philosophy of not wanting his health to be the subject of interest in his line of work. However, he followed the direction we suggested for medical intervention and returned to prioritizing his job. With him, it's always duty first, and that drive for excellence was once a source of trouble for us when we were on opposite sides of the table.

In 2007, when I assumed the role of Commissioner of Finance in Governor Ali Modu Sheriff's government in Borno State, Mallam Gusau was the Daily Trust correspondent and later Bureau Chief covering the Borno-Yobe axis. He had been a problem for the government before my arrival. Fresh out of the private sector, I conducted sentiment analysis of my new station, and this inviolable reporter was a recurring problem in our efforts to manage the perception of the state and the government's commitment to the people, especially during the critical phase of an ideological invasion in the North-East by a group that has since become the global calamity known as Boko Haram.

I had always admired objective contrarians and critics, and it didn't take long to und
