Vanguards of Democracy Condemns Launch of New National ID Cards
April 12, 2024:
The Vanguards of Democracy (VOD), a leading pro-democracy and good governance advocacy group, strongly condemns the recent announcement by the National Identity Management Commission regarding the launch of three new national ID cards for 104 million Nigerians.
The decision to introduce additional national ID cards amidst existing challenges within Nigeria's identity card system is deeply concerning. With various ID cards already in circulation but not effectively implemented, the introduction of new initiatives represents a gross misallocation of resources, time, and taxpayer funds.
It is evident that the priority should be on improving the functionality and efficiency of existing identity card systems rather than introducing new ones.
Vanguards of Democracy (VOD) calls on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to prioritize the needs of the Nigerian people and cancel the launch of these new ID cards.
Furthermore, we urge the federal government to focus on addressing pressing issues such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and security, which are essential for the advancement of the nation and the well-being of its citizens.
The Vanguards of Democracy (VOD) remains committed to advocating for transparency, accountability, and responsible governance in Nigeria.
We will continue to monitor developments closely and hold leaders accountable for their actions.
The statement is signed by Nze Ugo-Akpe Onwuka (Oyi), National President, Vanguards Of Democracy (VOD)
