Idoma stakeholders forge strategies to tackle insecurity, boost regional growth at USA convention

The Idoma Association USA, a socio-cultural group of Idoma natives based in the United States of America, recently held its 28th annual convention.

The three-day convention, with the theme “The Effect of Security on the Economic Development of Idomaland,” took place in New Jersey, with many Idoma sons and daughters in attendance between August 1 and August 3, 2024.

At the well-attended convention, participants emphasized the need to promote economic and educational growth within Idoma communities in Nigeria and unity among the Idoma people in the United States of America.

In his welcome address, the President of the association, Dr. Edwin Ochai, decried the incessant killings, particularly in areas like Apa and Agatu, and other parts of Idomaland, which he described as “deeply troubling.”

According to him, “These senseless acts of violence not only claim precious lives but also sow fear and instability among our people.

“We cannot ignore the toll that insecurity takes on our communities, and it is imperative that we address this issue with the urgency and seriousness it demands.

“Without security, our dreams of economic prosperity and social progress remain out of reach. A secure environment is the foundation upon which we can build a thriving economy. Investors, both local and foreign, are deterred by the threat of violence and instability.

“Businesses cannot flourish in an environment where safety is not guaranteed. It is clear that if we are to attract investment, create jobs, and drive economic growth, we must first ensure the safety of our people and property.”

Ochai also lamented that most Idoma youths are being led astray by cultism and other social vices.

He opined that, “We cannot afford to lose our young generation to these destructive paths. It is our responsibility to engage them meaningfully, providing them with opportunities for education, employment, and personal growth.

“By investing in our youth, we are investing in the future of Idomaland. Let us create programs and initiatives that will empower our young people, steering them away from negative influences and towards a brighter, more productive future.”

He stated that a detailed blueprint outlining strategies to address the ongoing insecurity in Idoma land and promote the region's economic development will soon be available for implementation.
In his virtual address, the HRM Agabaidu Elaigwu John Odogbo (Och’Idoma V), commended the association for holding the Idoma cultural identity high and placing its traditions and customs on an international pedestal.

He said, “I commend the consistency and tenacity of the group in organizing and hosting the Idoma Annual Convention in the United States of America for a record of 28 unbroken years.

“This not only shows your love and appreciation for your cultural heritage but also highlights the reason you all keep excelling in your chosen careers.”

The royal father decried that for years now, the Idoma kingdom has experienced renewed attacks by criminal murderers who have attacked our people unprovoked, killing hundreds and displacing thousands from their homes into various IDP camps within the realm.

He said, “During this period, the Idoma nation, through me, called on you, and without hesitation, you provided financial relief for the victims. This relief went a long way in alleviating the pains of affected people across almost all local government areas in Idoma kingdom. This further adds credibility to what I said earlier: though you have left home, the home has not left you.”

Speaking on the theme of the event, the Och’Idoma said, “As we delve into the heart of this important topic, it is imperative to acknowledge the negative effects that insecurity has placed upon our lives.

“This shows that fear, uncertainty, and instability have loomed over our community, hindering progress, stunting growth, and indeed dimming the prosperity of a flourishing economy.

“The effects of insecurity in our kingdom include, but are not limited to, investment. Insecurity discourages investment as investors seek a stable environment for their businesses. Without investment, economic growth is stifled.

“Security threats disrupt agricultural activities, leading to food shortages and economic losses for farmers. Insecurity hinders the construction and maintenance of essential infrastructure like roads, bridges, hospitals, and also affects markets, trade, and commerce.”

On the way forward, the monarch noted that, “It is incumbent upon us to explore possible pathways to peace and security to foster a conducive environment for growth and progress. Through enhanced collaboration with law enforcement agencies, community empowerment initiatives, and proactive measures, we can reclaim the promise of a safe and thriving Idoma land. I insist and must continue to emphasize that our strength and growth lie in unity. In resilience and determination lies the power to effect positive change.

“Let us heed the call to action. Let us stand in the guidance of our heritage, and let us strive together to build a kingdom where security and prosperity go hand in hand.”

In a video message, Dr. Sam Odeh, the Deputy Governor of Benue State, who was unable to attend the convention due to the ongoing protests in Nigeria, reassured that the state government, led by Rev. Fr. Hycainth Alia, has not neglected the Benue South Senatorial District.

Odeh was addressing the recent concerns raised by the association during a virtual meeting with the governor, where it was noted that his projects are predominantly located in Tiv-speaking areas.

Odeh refuted the belief held by some that Governor Alia is biased towards his tribe, affirming that the governor has planned several projects for the Benue South Senatorial District, which will be initiated in the near future.

The deputy governor said, “We understand that infrastructure is critical to both security and economic growth.

“The state government has therefore embarked on several road construction and rehabilitation projects to improve access and connectivity within our communities. This includes the Oju-Awaji Road, which cuts across Oju-Obi federal constituencies, enhancing connectivity and facilitating the movement of goods and people.

“The proposed Obagaji-Okoklo-Agade Road cuts across the two local governments that make up the Apa/Agatu federal constituency. This particular road will provide better access and support agricultural activities in various sub-districts of the state.

“The proposed Ichama-Okpoga-Ugbokolo Road in Ado, Okpokw, and Ogbadigbo federal constituencies. These roads, which will kick off soon, will improve transportation networks and boost local economies.

“The Ugboju-Onyagede Road is conceived to cover the Otukpo/Ohimini federal constituency, connecting communities within the federal constituency and fostering economic interactions.

“In addition to these major trunk routes, we have also proposed Otukpo township roads, including an overhead bridge in Otukpo township to ease traffic around the Enugu roundabout.

“In addition to this, we have the Edikwu-Eiupi link road, which is proposed for construction any moment from now.

“We are going to construct Jos Street, Ugbokolo Street, Ochekwu Street, Onitsha Street, among others. The Salem Hospital Road is one of those roads to be captured by Phase 1 of this initiative.”

On the issue of insecurity in Idoma land, Odeh noted that a Bureau for Homeland Security has been established by the government of Benue State to tackle the menace.

He added, “This specialized unit will work alongside the existing security agencies to provide a robust security framework, ensuring that our communities are rid of herders' attacks and other criminal practices so that economic activities can flourish without fear of disruption.

“It is important to note that the manpower for this Homeland Security is going to be drawn from youths in our communities, thereby providing what is similar to the local policing that we have always been agitating for.”

On his part, Senate Minority Leader and representative of Benue South in the Red Chamber, Senator Abba Moro, who was represented at the event by Mr Sylvanus Edache Ocheme, lauded the association for their contributions to the socioeconomic development of Idoma land.

He urged the group to maintain and even strengthen the bonds they have sustained for years, describing the convention as a testament to the enduring spirit, unity, and resilience of the Idoma people, both at home and in the diaspora.

Senator Moro said, “This convention serves as a reminder of our common cultural heritage, which defines us, and an opportunity to celebrate our identity and achievements.

“The progress we have made as a community is commendable, but it's also a call for us to reflect on the path ahead. As the Senate Minority Leader and the representative of the Benue South Senatorial District in the Nigerian Senate, I am very aware of the challenges we face back home — from economic hardships and infrastructural deficits to educational gaps and healthcare inadequacies.

“Our mission is to translate these challenges into opportunities for growth and development.

“I urge you to maintain and even strengthen these bonds. Our collective effort is crucial in driving the progress we seek. No single individual can do it alone.”
Present at the event was the representative of Otukpo-Ohimini Federal Constituency, Lady Blessing Onuh, who thanked Idomas in the diaspora for always thinking about home.

The lawmaker, who spoke on the unity of Idoma and the need to unite and build a stronger and more prosperous Idoma nation, disclosed that her office has created a diaspora help desk where she can liaise with Idoma sons and daughters overseas, allowing them to share ideas.

In his speech, Rt. Hon. Anthony Agom, a member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Okpokwu, praised the Idoma Association USA for their unity and dedication towards the Idoma nation.

He urged those in Nigeria to emulate the same spirit and determination exhibited by the Idoma diaspora.

Agom stated, "I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Idoma Association USA for their exemplary unity of purpose in supporting the Idoma nation. Their commitment is commendable and sets a standard for all of us."

He continued, "I call on our people at home to draw inspiration from the Idoma community abroad. The unity and determination shown by the Idomas in the diaspora should be a model for us as we strive to strengthen our own community and work towards our collective goals."

The conference's impact extends beyond merely addressing questions, as it has also led to the creation of a security advisory committee tasked with developing a comprehensive blueprint and recommendations.

These findings are set to be shared with key stakeholders, including the Och’Idoma, senators, representatives, and state officials.

This initiative aims to ensure that the recommendations are understood and implemented to effectively address and mitigate security issues, reinforcing the conference's commitment to tangible solutions.

The highlight of the 2024 convention was the presentation of recognition awards to twelve members of the association for their dedicated service over the past 28 years.

Among the awardees was, Engr Cletus Agbo, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Idoma Association USA, who made a compelling appeal to the Benue State government and other stakeholders, on the need to emulate the collaborative spirit of the Idoma Association in the United States, advocating for a unified effort to advance national development.

Agbo emphasized that progress should transcend religious, tribal, and political divides, stressing the importance of a collective commitment to building a stronger nation.

Watch this video carefully and get the correct response by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, when he was asked if the Lawmakers could adjust their salaries to cushion the effect of hardship being faced by the masses.

He said that Members of Parliament are feeling the pulse of the nation and are willing to make adjustments in their salary as necessary sacrifice to helping their constituents cope with the current economic realities in the country.

Even though the Salaries of the Lawmakers are not as much as people think, but the Deputy Speaker said they are willing to make sacrifices. Those who didn't watch the program are chanting another song with distorted version.

RCCG COD MUMMY’S DANCE OF SHAME AND WIGWE FAMILY’S COMMENDABLE RESPONSE

By Betty Abah

The decision by the Wigwe family to exclude their late son’s church, the elitist City of David (COD), RCCG, Lagos from his burial programs is all shades of excellent.

The level of insensitivity shown by the lead pastor’s wife, Mrs. Siju Iluyomade by organizing a lavish party to mark her 60th birthday just a week after the tragic passing of their church’s leading member and unparalleled financier who died alongside his wife and first son in an air crash in the USA, is callously Unchristianly. It’s dancing makosa over the very fresh graves of these church members and rubbing tarodo pepper on their surviving family members’ grievous wounds. It is in bad taste and such strain of insensitivity wails to the highest heavens.

What happens to a postponement or even a cancellation in their honour considering their relationship? What happened to our sense of sensitivity? Excuse me, how is the birthday party sacrosanct amidst this traumatic occurrence?

And did you see her pinkish Cinderella dress and the entertaining local giant masquerade and Flavour the Crooner titillating her while at it? (And Flavour of all else, what happened to musicians of same faith for a top religious figure as Mummy COD?). What is the message passed? And how does one ever juxtapose this debauchery side by side with the wailing of the Wigwe’s family including his aged mum and dad, siblings and surviving three kids? Who else should show the coziest compassion other than his spiritual family? What happens to the biblical injunction to ‘mourn with those who mourn’?

Hey, billionaire banker and cofounder of Access Bank, founder of the Wigwe University amongst other accomplishments, Mr. Hubert Wigwe was no ordinary member. His N1Billion loan partly helped facilitate the building of COD’s recently launched mega church building amongst other hefty helps narrated by the lead pastor, Idowu Iluyomade himself following Mr. Wigwe’s passing.

But Wigwe weighed much more; his philanthropic work extended far beyond his church, including the educational scholarship suppprt for hundreds or even thousand of students via the HOW foundation which he also founded. Despite the bias many of us hold against his Access Bank, their CSR work in the health sector, nonprofits, for enterpreneurs and other endeavors surpass most banks in the country. In his death Nigeria lost an iconoclastic asset while millions lost lifetime opportunities. Yet for his church ‘mummy’, her birthday and associated Makosa was what mattered most to her.

Besides Wigwe, his wife Chizoba, also a very successful business woman ,must have been an asset as well to the church. The couple was both in their mid 50’s. The young man who died with them was their heir apparent, their firstborn child, a 22 year~old Stanford University graduate and promising fintech guru), all burnt to death in a foreign land. A traumatic incineration of potentials, dreams, a tragic end!

And these were the members whose church’s ‘mummy’ could not mourn beyond a week while the rest of the country, most of whom didn’t know them in person, were still reeling in shock and extended grief.

Yet if Pastor Mrs. Iluyomade ever knew that Christianity’s essence revolves around compassion and unconditionally care, she didn’t need to be told to postpone or even cancel this wild party just a week after the horrible deaths of the trio who were their members and worse, members of one family.

At this point we also should be asking Daddy G.O., Enoch Adeboye if he still has any grip over these scandal~prone mega RCCG parishes where members’ socioeconomic standings typically dictate their clergy positions and not their spiritual stands. Same mega parishes whose standards differ drastically from the spiricoco ‘normal’ classic parishes even
if they are within same religious denomination. Perhaps while at it, we should equally ask if COD’s lead pastor, Idowu endorsed this show of shame by his wife or if she was simply beyond control (he could also be seen gyrating at the abysmal funfair). Also, if this could be the response to the tragedy that befell the rich and powerful Wiggles,, what then would be the fate of the poverty~stricken and ‘insignificant members of the COD’s super rich fold?

Can we say the truth for once concerning religiosity in Nigeria without the fear of being struck down by a snap of the ‘Annointed’s fingers ? Can we? Shall we?

We are losing our humanity in this country and people who should lead the way by their humane examples, body languages and the symbolisms of their actions don’t give a single hoot. How can you even hold a sumptuous party to mark a birthday as a religious and public figure and not a charity outreach in the midst of widespread hunger in the land if you really get God’s mind, ehn? Where is the compassion sef? Haba.

Anyway, thanks to the Wigwe’s family. And no, please don’t rescind that decision. Let COD continue partying, after all, ‘life must go on’.

Enough of the rubbing into our wounds by the insulated elites of the land.

Enough.

Meanwhile, RT. Rev. Dr. Godwin Idoko Ali has been elected as the Bishop of the newly created Methodist Diocese of Enone South.

Bishop Ali, until his elevation, was a Presbyter of MCN Maraba Circuit in Abuja. He was elected at the Biennial Conference in Umuahia, Abia State in August 2023. He had since been consecrated at a well-attended Conference in Lagos, in November 2023.

APC Lawmakers: Gov Alia a Dictator, running Benue like parish

***urge Tinubu to reign on him

Lawmakers elected into the National Assembly under the umbrella of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), on Thursday, came hard on the Governor of Benue State, Fr. Hyacinth Alia, describing him as “a dictator” who is running the state government like his personal business.

Rising from a one-day retreat organised in National Assembly on Thursday, the Lawmakers, under the aegis of Benue APC National Assembly Caucus, also called on President Ahmed Bola Tinubu, to quickly prevail on the Governor, before he runs the state aground, saying, Alia’s tendencies could cost the party a defeat in subsequent elections in the state, if he is not quiuckly called to order.

“We the undersigned are members of the National Assembly Caucus elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform from Benue State. Having watched with apprehension the absence of democratic leadership in Benue State in the last six (6) months exemplified by the arrogant and egocentric conduct of Governor Hyacinth I Alia, we have decided to draw the attention of Mr President and other leaders of APC in Nigeria to seek their immediate intervention before the fortunes of APC in Benue State are totally destroyed”, the text of press statement after the retreat, reads.

Reading further, Leader of the Caucus and Senator representing Benue North West, Senator Titus Zam, said, the matter had been reported severally to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, who has been mediating to see that things were normalised.

“It is necessary to state from the onset that, we have collectively and individually drawn the attention of the leader of the APC in Benue, Sen. Dr. George Akume Secretary to the Government of the Federation who has on several occasions pleaded for patience from us in the anticipation of a possible change of attitude from His Excellency Governor Hyacinth Alia, rather than change for the better.

“Governor Alia has become more emboldened and has continued to treat us and the party in general in the most disgusting, disrespectful and disingenuous manner”, he said.

In retrospect, the APC Lawmakers said, “Fr. Alia only came to reap where he did not sow. In any case, you are well aware of the rejection his candidacy received from older members of the party including litigations in several courts of Law up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria, it took the strident support of Sen. Dr. George Akume to extricate his candidacy from the destructive grip of his co-aspirants and eventual victory at the polls.

“Today, the ungrateful Fr. Alia, who had barely joined APC two months before the Governorship primaries assumes a messianic posture and tend to appropriate the victory of APC in Benue State as a product of his so-called popularity; without regard to the painstaking and systematic efforts of the subsisting formidable political structure which has enthroned all the governors in the State before him.

“The question begging for answers is; why did the self-acclaimed popular priest not contest on the platform of either APGA, PDP or other smaller political parties in Benue State?

“For clarity's sake, let us contextualize some of the dictatorial and egocentric tendencies of Governor Alia and his poor treatment of Benue APC in the last six (6) months of his administration in Benue State.

“The election of the speaker of Benue House of Assembly. The position of the speaker was zoned to the Jembagh bloc of Benue North West Senatorial District, coincidentally the birthplace of the SGF, Sen. Dr. George Akume, whereas APC has 22 members out of a total of 32 members of the Assembly. Governor Alia connived with former Governor Gabriel Suswam of PDP to produce a speaker different from the candidate preferred by APC. In the contest for the position of the Speaker, Governor Alia held midnight meetings at the Residence of Sen. Gabriel Suswam and got Ten (10) PDP members to align with 7 recalcitrant APC members to beat the APC preferred candidate by the margin of 2 votes; thus began his unholy alliance with PDP to undermine and maltreat the legitimate members of APC in Benue State.

“After the Speakership debacle, the party again nominated and made a spread of principal officers of the assembly, comprising; Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip and Deputy Chief Whip. Surprisingly, the speaker joyfully agreed with the opposition party on all nominations from the Peoples Democratic Party as endorsed by the State Chairman of the PDP and Secretary but jettisoned the list submitted by APC and rather accepted the list that was unilaterally submitted by the Governor through his Chief of Staff.

“It was an embarrassing experience for the Party having to face the dejection in the hands of an administration it labored hard to install. However, the party submitted and sustained their faith in the Governor and his government even when they felt aggrieved and resorted to stand by the advice of the leader of the party Sen. Dr. George Akume whose counsel has always been for the party to keep praying for Fr. Alia to succeed.

“in the first meeting of the stakeholders that was held in government house the chairman of the party Comrade Austine Agada publicly went on his knees took all the blames even though there was no blame and apologized to the governor and party members requesting they put behind the State Assembly imbroglio and come together to save the party, in the meeting, the governor praised the leader of the party with promise to always work together so that Benue and the party will enjoy democratic dividends. He also pledged that going forward he was going to involve the party and other critical stakeholders in sensitive decisions particularly in the nomination of commissioners and local government caretaker committees, a promise he unfortunately kept in breach.

“In appointing his commissioners, His Excellency again exercised a sole discretion without recourse to the normal tradition of requesting for nominations from the local governments and disregarded the zoning arrangements and permutations and went ahead to make his independent choices as he deemed soothing, again the party did not oppose him but rather gave him support since it was his own State Executive and Security Council and needed people he could vouch for.

“The nomination of caretaker committees to man the various local governments was when the party received the most humiliation, governor Alia had thrown back to party members during the Stakeholders meeting by demanding an immediate nomination of 3 candidates each for the position of Caretaker Chairman, Deputy and Secretary as well Supervisory Councilors across the twenty three local government demanding for two slots of supervisory councilors from each of the local governments, this was first time a governor will demand such from the caretaker council formation against the usual one slot per local government. The party jubilantly agreed and followed the directive by holding meetings, and painstakingly submitting their various lists with the sigh of relief and sense of belonging.

“But surprisingly, when the nominations were finally announced the party was amazed that ninety percent of the names were outside the nominees that were sent to the governor at his directive. In all these misgivings and disaffection the announcement of the caretaker committee marked the pinnacle of a noticeably bad relationship between governor Alia and APC in Benue State and this has angered a lot of party men and women in the State which can be justified by all standards.

“Disrespect and disregard to members of NASS: Governor Hyacinth Alia since assumption of duty has not held any meeting with NASS members of Benue State who were elected on the same APC platform with him neither does he pick or return their telephone calls not to talk about consulting them on political matters in the State. He has assumed the posture of a conqueror who does not care about the welfare, nor status of National Assembly Members in his leadership of Benue State. In every State of the federation members of NASS are working in synergy with their governors to attract development from the center to their State of origin.

“Governor Alia has no single known developmental blueprint for Benue State. As at the moment, nobody in Benue State is aware of the direction of his administration, what he practices is personal rule and this is replicated by the lopsided appointment he has made in the State so far, with his immediate community of Kunav cornering all the strategic positions in government.

“Implications of his undemocratic rule in Benue State; the grave consequences of Governor Alia personal rule is that, the generality of APC members who are excluded and abandoned are beginning to lose faith in the APC led administration in Benue State. Therefore, care must be taken to safeguard APC from the tyrannical leadership of Governor Alia so as to prepare the party for subsequent electoral victories in the future. Governor Alia's street showmanship of non-existent huge support base is not predicated on a substantive love of a massive street followers, does not translate to the real political support which only leaders can guarantee”.

In addition, the Member representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, Hon. Philip Agbese accused the Governor of nepotism, saying he appointed over 30 key political officers from his immediate clan in Vandeikya LGA, whereas, the Idoma speaking people from Benue South were grossly shortchanged in the scheme of things.

The Lawmakers, comprising of Senators and House of Representatives Members elected under APC from Benue State, also used the occasion to pledge loyalty to President Tinubu, the National Chairman of APC, Umar Ganduje, Sen. Akume, the State Chairman of APC, Comrade Austine Agada and his state led executive.
