A black woman who stood up to 300 neo-N***s in Sweden hopes her gesture will draw attention to the fight against racism in the Scandinavian country.


Tess Asplund tried to block the path of the Nordic Resistance Movement as the right-wing extremist group marched in the town of Borlange on May 1.


An image of Asplund facing the neo-N***s up close with a clenched fist has been shared thousands of times on social media in Sweden and internationally.


The 42-year-old anti-racism activist told Swedish Radio her defiant gesture was inspired by the late Nelson Mandela, who fought against apartheid in South Africa.


“I felt when they arrived that they shouldn’t be here and spread their hate,” Asplund said. “I don’t think I was even thinking. I just jumped out. Things happened quite quickly. Then a police officer pulled me away.”


A video of the incident from the Dala-Demokraten newspaper shows Asplund walking backward as she faces men with shaved heads at the front of the procession. One of them tries to shove her aside while another counter-demonstrator is forcefully pushed out of the path of the parade.


Asplund said she was stunned by the attention she got after images of her defiant gesture spread in Sweden and beyond.


“I have fought against racism for 26 years. I am 42 now. And if this is a thing that makes people pay attention to the fight against racism and xenophobia, then that’s very good,” Asplund told Swedish Radio. “But I don’t want people to see me as a symbol. There were a lot of others who were there against the racists in Borlange.”


David Lagerlof, the photographer who took the most shared photo of Asplund, said he was getting ready to take photos of the approaching march when Asplund suddenly walked out into the middle of the street.


“I thought, ‘how is this going to end?’ She got out there and stared into the eyes of the leader of the demonstration,” Lagerlof told The Associated Press. “They continued going forward, stone-faced.”


Swedish anti-racism organization Expo published his photo on its website, and Lagerlof also posted it on social media. Many people shared the image and expressed support and admiration of Asplund’s defiance.


J.K. Rowling, author of the “Harry Potter” series, tweeted “Tess Asplund, you are magnificent” and shared Lagerlof’s image.


“I don’t know if it gets any bigger than that,” Lagerlof said.


Swedish security service SAPO has described the Nordic Resistance Movement as a white supremacist group with a strict hierarchy and military influences. Several of its members have been convicted of violent crimes including manslaughter, assault and attempted murder.

As a killer shot up a community college in Oregon, one Army veteran and student charged right into the gunfire.

Chris Mintz has been hailed as a hero for blocking the gunman’s path as he opened fire on students. The 30-year-old, who had just started at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Ore., was shot five to seven times.

He’s recovering in a hospital, a day after the shooter identified as Chris Harper-Mercer killed at least nine students and wounded several others. It was the fourth case of a college campus shooting since August.
Mintz acted when he heard shots fired in the classroom next to him, his cousin Ariana Earnhardt told WFMY-TV in Greensboro, N.C.

“He heard the gunshots so he told the people in his classroom to just be calm,” Earnhardt said. “He came and he met the shooter at the door. He was like you need to calm down. I guess he tried to talk to him and talk him out of it and he shot him."

Earnhardt said Mintz moved from North Carolina to Oregon to be closer to his son. The student charged the gunman apparently on the sixth birthday of his son, Tyrik. The Daily Beast reported that as he lay wounded, Mintz kept repeating: “It’s my son’s birthday, it’s my son’s birthday.”

Another one of Mintz’s cousins, Derek Bourgeois, told the Daily Beast he was amazed “that a guy who survived a combat deployment without serious injury had come so close to being killed in a small Oregon town.” But he was not shocked by Mintz’s act of heroism.

Said Bourgeois: “It sounds like something he would do.”
The U.S. Army says the shooter himself flunked out of basic training in 2008.

Lt. Col. Ben Garrett, an Army spokesman, said Harper-Mercer was in service at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, starting on Nov. 5, 2008. But by Dec. 11, 2008, he was discharged for failing to meet the minimum administrative standards.

Garrett did not say which standards Harper-Mercer failed to meet. Generally, the Army requires recruits to pass physical fitness tests and to be generally in good physical and mental health. Recruits also must score highly enough on a multiple-choice test covering science, math, reading comprehension and other topics.

The shooting Thursday at Umpqua Community College also wounded seven people.
