ABUJA – Dr. Ernest Umakhihe, Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security(FMAFS) has identified the impact of climate change as one of the challenges militating against the Federal Government’s quest to achieve food security in the country.

Umakhihe stated this on Monday in Abuja at the opening ceremony of a two-day capacity building workshop on the Responsive Policy on Climate Change Adaptation for Smallholder Farmers and the Crucial Role of Media organised by Organisation of African Instituted Churches(OAIC).

ABUJA – In view of the rising food inflation in Nigeria, Architect Kabir Ibra­him, National President of All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), has advised government of­ficials and other critical stakeholders to brace up for the challenge, warning that the time for glib talk and grand­standing should be considered over if Nigeria was to wriggle her way out of the difficult and ever rising food infla­tion being experienced in the country.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), in its latest report on Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Inflation Report September 2023 re­leased on October 16, Nigeria’s head­line inflation rose to 26.72 per cent in September 2023, from 25.80 per cent in August.

The President, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, Kabir Ibrahim has called for farmers and actors in the food value chain to redouble their effort to work assiduously towards food production in order to satisfy the yearnings of the people.

Ibrahim made the call in accordance with the state of emergency declared on food security by president Tinubu, he added that farmers are willing to put in more work, but certain things need to be in place for us to be able to optimize our productivity.

The AFAN boss while speaking with AgroNigeria in an interview said, “In some parts of the country, insecurity is preventing us from going to our farms, and state of emergency on food means that all these things would be taken care of, so we are hopeful of having a secured environment to operate.”

The meeting which sprung off the fourth edition of the Brazil-Nigeria Trade Forum held September 6, 2023, saw the Embassy of Brazil host global think-tank organisation and Latin America’s largest think-tank, FGV Europe, Brazil’s International Center for Innovation and Transfer of Agricultural and Environmental Technology (CIITTA) alongside Nigeria’s farmers, federal and state governments.

The President, Vegetable Farmers Association Ojo area of Lagos State, Mrs Mariam Ali, has appealed to the state government to tackle flooding in the area to ensure food security in Lagos State, Southwestern, Nigeria.

Ali made the appeal in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday in Lagos.

It was recalled that in 2022, 676,945 farmlands were destroyed as a result of flooding as stated by the 2023 performance scorecard presented by the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Management, Sadiya Farouq. Reports said.

According to him, food security was one priority and a mandate given to the ministry by the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu in his Renewed Hope Agenda which focuses on Agriculture and Food Security as well as good nutrition.

Experts in the agricultural sector have emphasised the need for the government to increase investments in agricultural research institutes as well as seeds development to achieve food security in the country.

According to them, previous investment in the agricultural sector by the government has not yielded much fruit because emphasis was placed on fertilizer and other farm inputs with little or no efforts to support research institutions to boost production of improved varieties to increase farm yield.
