Today, we are going to examine the health benefits of water leaf. This plant grows in many places, even in unsual places one don't expect to see it. But it is a very essential vegetable, that shouldn't be underated.
WATERLEAF
Waterleaf are these very fine Vegetables with the name ; Talinum triangulare. The Yorubas call it Gbure, in Igbo, it is called Mgbolodi, the Calabars call it mmoi ikon ( hope I got that right🙈), while the Edos call it Ebe - dondon.
It is employed in cooking various delicious Soups, mostly in conjunctions with other leaves like in Afang & Edikang ikong Soups. But this article is going to focus more on it's health benefits.
HEALTH BENEFITS OF WATERLEAF CONSUMPTIONS
1. Enhances Cognitive ability : Consumption of waterleaf helps improves Cerebral blood flows and cognitive functions thereby helping the brain to function adequately by supplying it with enough oxygen.
2. Eliminates Infectious diseases: Waterleaf has antibacterial, anti fungal and anti inflammatory properties which in essence helps in suppressing or preventing the growth of bacterial, fungai and inflammatory diseases in the body.
3. Promotes Heart health: by regulating and supplying oxygen adequately to the needed areas in the heart, helps to promote heart health from heart related diseases and stroke.
4. Improves blood cells: the adequate supply of oxygen to the needed areas also helps to boost the red and white blood cells.
5. Repairs body tissues: Waterleaf is a big source of vitamin A & C, which helps in repairing our body tissues and promotes eye vision.
SIDE EFFECTS : Waterleaf should be taken in very little amounts by those suffering from kidney disorders and gout.
Also, when eaten in excess, it can cause stomach upset and frequent stooling.
WATERLEAF JUICE : Intake of Waterleaf in this format will give more benefits than being cooked. The juice can be extracted by picking the Waterleaf, washing the leaves and soft stems together, then blending it with little water. In the absence of blenders, one can, after washing the leaves and stems, squeeze wash very to release the juice.
