Tinubu Spent ₦390M On Hotel Room To Attend UN General Assembly In September - FIJ

The federal government spent a whopping $507,384 on hotel accommodation for President Bola Tinubu at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

When converted to Naira, $507,384 is equivalent to N390,690,753 at the current exchange rate.

According to a memo dated September 11, 2023, and obtained by FIJ, $422,820 (N325.5 million) out of the total amount covered the cost of rooms booked for Tinubu and his close aides at the St. Regis Hotel in New York from September 16 to 23.

The memo also shows that the remaining $84,564 (65.1 million in Naira), which is 20 percent of the hotel reservation cost, was for incidentals.

While the memo does not include a breakdown of the incidentals, hotel incidental charges entail the cost of services and amenities that are not included in the room rates.

A search through the website of St. Regis Hotel shows that the cost of a room, including taxes and fees, could be as high as $17,273 per night and as low as $915 per night.

The memo, signed by Adebiyi O. Olufunso, the permanent secretary of the state house, and addressed to the president, was titled ‘Re: Mr. President’s Participation at the 7th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), New York from 17th-23rd September 2023’.

FIJ understands that the memo’s main purpose was to request the president’s approval. Written on the memo were the words “Payment authorised as requested”, which means that the president indeed approved the payment.

A part of the document reads, “Federal Ministry of Finance and Office of the Accountant General of the Federation has been informed and are on standby to pay as soon as Mr. President approves.”

The memo also appealed to the president to authorise the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget, and National Planning to make necessary arrangements for the release of the funds from the 15% Wheat Grain Levy Pool Account.

FIJ found that the federal government introduced a 15 percent levy on wheat grain imports in 2012. The levy was aimed at promoting Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in wheat production and reduce the food import bill.

Man Stabbed To Death In Ebonyi State By His In-law After He Married Second Wife (Photo)

A middle-aged man identified as Onwe Uchenna has been allegedly stabbed to death in Ebonyi State after he reportedly married a second wife.

It was gathered that the ugly incident happened at Ohagelode Ishieke market square in the Mbeke Development Center of Ebonyi.

According to a resident of the village, Israel Idenyi who narrated the ugly incident, the man had an issue with his first wife and he was invited by the wife's family to come for peace settling.

The source said during the peace talk, the issue escalated between him and the wife's brother and the brother angrily left the scene without anybody knowing what he had in mind.

According to him, "It was at midnight, around 2:24 am that we heard someone shouting pronouncing the wife's brother's name."

"We have to come outside, we saw him lying down in the pool of blood. Luckily we met him while he was still alive. He narrated before dying that the wife's brother came back wearing black and attacked him with a knife".

He further said that the first wife had been arrested by security operatives.

Buhari’s government failed woefully and he's now living in regret - Solomon Dalung

Former Minister of Sports and Youth Development, Solomon Dalung has said that his former principal, ex-President Muhammadu Buhari is now living in regret over an alleged failure of his administration to tackle the challenges facing the country.

Speaking to Trust Radio, Dalung alleged that the Buhari administration failed to fulfil the promises made to Nigeria during the 2015 campaign. He also alleged that the President's allies have “dragged his name in the mud.”

The former minister said;

“We failed to meet our expectations, and I am not hypocritical because as a major stakeholder who campaigned vigorously in 2015 and went to the nooks and crannies of the north, of all the promises we made, we fulfilled none of them.

“The political covenant we had with Nigerians while campaigning was that we were going to address the security situation; we were going to revamp the economy; and we were going to give corruption a major technical blow so that we could minimize it to the barest minimum.

“Looking back, reflecting and evaluating the situation as it is today, we failed woefully. He (Buhari) is a very honest man who believed that everybody around him was an honest person, he brought them and trusted them. Today, I believe he is living in regret.

“They have dragged his name and integrity not only into the mud and they’ve reduced his image.”

Dalung also said that the APC administration og 2015 and 2019 recorded a modest progress, because “insecurity was not as worse as it is currently.”

He added;

“Banditry and terrorism got minimized in terms of attacks, but it’s still flourishing, the complete change of dynamics in the security situation worse than ever before in the history of this country, and is a remarkable failure and indictment too on the APC, because these were not part the democratic covenant they had with Nigerians”.
