SOMEONE MOST PAY A PRICE FOR STABILITY OF OUR NATIONS ECONOMY (FOOD PRICES)

By suleiman Ibrahim.

Aisha Jibrin, Fatima Aliyu and Fatima Isyaku are the 2024 heroes of Democracy in Niger state and NIGERIA as far as I am concerned, they initiated a peaceful protest on the current economic hardship faced all over Nigeria.

On a daily basis the prices of commodities keep increasing sometimes triple of the old price nobody is saying anything, we only grumble or rain courses on the leaders.

The women in police custody took it upon themselves to send strong message to the relevant authorities.

Niger State government in their magnanimous ways of listening to plight of the masses, delegated His Excellency the Deputy Governor of Niger State Comr Yakubu Garba and his entourage to the scene of protest to hear their cries and agitation, which they made their submissions and the Deputy Governor pleaded with them and reassured them that he will convey their message to Mr Governor and the President.

Unfortunately, the hoodlums hijacked the protest stoning the Deputy Governor and his entourage the police had no choice than to protect His Excellency and dispatched the protesters, the hoodlums destroy Government properties police van and other vehicles.

The actions of our heroes has forced the state and federal government to take necessary measures and actions in addressing the raising food prices in the country.

Your Excellency sir, Farmer Governor Umaru Mohammed Bago your love for Nigerlite can not be quantified, we are pleading with you sir to have mercy on the convener of the protest, please sir, hunger is the root cause, things are not easy sir,

The women have played their part it is left for us Nigerians to play our part in making sure we secure their release and not to allow them suffer in the hands of the authorities.

And if we decide to keep mute and allow them to suffer it means that we will continue to suffer and the prices of food items will continue to skyrocket, it is left for us to choose.

Finally I want to appeal to Human right, SERAP, and other human right organizations to stand for the tripod of greatness in Niger state, remember we all visit thesame market.

TEXT OF MEDIA BRIEFING BY MR. DELE ALAKE, SPECIAL ADVISER TO THE PRESIDENT ON SPECIAL DUTIES, COMMUNICATIONS AND STRATEGY ON THE DETAILS OF

PRESIDENTIAL INTERVENTION ON FOOD SECURITY, FOOD PRICING & SUSTAINABILITY ON THURSDAY, JULY 13, 2023

Gentlemen of the press, I welcome you once again to this press conference to update the public on President Bola Tinubu-led administration’s immediate response to the current food inflation in the country.

As a hands-on- leader who follows developments across the country every day, Mr President is not unmindful of the rising cost of food and how it affects the citizens. While availability is not a problem, affordability has been a major issue for many Nigerians in all parts of the country. This has led to a significant drop in demand thereby undermining the viability of the entire agriculture and food value chain.

Accordingly, in line with this administration’s position on ensuring that the most vulnerable are supported, Mr President has declared, with immediate effect the following actions:

• That a state of emergency on food security be announced immediately, and

• That all matters pertaining to food & water availability and affordability, as essential livelihood items, be included within the purview of the National Security Council.

As a direct and immediate response to this crisis, a number of initiatives will be deployed in the coming weeks to reverse this inflationary trend and guarantee future uninterrupted supplies of affordable foods to ordinary Nigerians.

As with most emergencies, there are immediate, medium- and long-term interventions and solutions.

In the immediate term, we intend to deploy some savings from the fuel subsidy removal into the Agricultural sector focusing on revamping the agricultural sector.

In an earlier meeting with Agriculture Stakeholders (today), we drafted a memorandum of partnership between the government and the individual stakeholder representatives that encompasses the decisions taken and actions proposed from our engagements.

The immediate intervention strategies are as follows:

1. We will immediately release fertilizers and grains to farmers and households to mitigate the effects of the subsidy removal.

2. There must be an urgent synergy between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources to ensure adequate irrigation of farmlands and to guarantee that food is produced all-year round.

As a country, Mr President has made it clear that we can no be comfortable with seasonal farming. We can no longer afford to have farming down times.

3. We shall create and support a National Commodity Board that will review and continuously assess food prices as well as maintain a strategic food reserve that will be used as a price stabilisation mechanism for critical grains and other food items.

Through this board, the government will moderate spikes and dips in food prices.

To achieve this, we have the following stakeholders on board to support the intervention effort of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu: The National Commodity Exchange (NCX), Seed Companies, National Seed Council and Research institutes, NIRSAL Microfinance Bank, Food Processing/ Agric Processing associations, private sector holders & Prime Anchors, smallholder farmers, crop associations and Fertilizer producers, blenders and suppliers associations to mention a few.

4. We will engage our security architecture to protect the farms and the farmers so that farmers can return to the farmlands without fear of attacks.

5. The Central Bank will continue to play a major role in funding the agricultural value chain.

6. Activation of land banks. There are currently 500,000 hectares of already mapped land that will be used to increase the availability of arable land for farming which will immediately impact food output.

– Mechanization and land clearing- The government will also collaborate with mechanization companies to clear more forests & make them available for farming

7. River basins- there are currently 11 river basins that will ensure the planting of crops during the dry season with irrigation schemes that will guarantee continuous farming production all year round, to stem the seasonal glut and scarcity that we usually experience.

8. We will deploy concessionary capital/funding to the sector, especially towards fertilizer, processing, mechanization, seeds, chemicals, equipment, feed, labour, etc.

The concessionary funds will ensure food is always available and affordable thereby having a direct impact on Nigeria’s Human Capital Index (HCI). This administration is focused on ensuring the HCI numbers, which currently rank as the 3rd lowest in the world, are improved for increased productivity.

9. Transportation and Storage: The cost of transporting Agricultural products has been a major challenge (due to permits, toll gates, and other associated costs). When the costs of moving farm produce is significantly impacted- it will immediately be passed to the consumers, which will affect the price of food- the government will explore other means of transportation including rail and water transport, to reduce freight costs and in turn impact the food prices.

As for storage, existing warehouses and tanks will be revamped to cut waste & ensure efficient preservation of food items.

10. We will Increase revenue from food and agricultural exports. As we ensure there is sufficient, affordable food for the populace, we will concurrently work on stimulating the export capacity of the Agric sector.

11. Trade Facilitation: Transportation, storage and export will be improved by working with the Nigerian Customs, who have assured us that the bottlenecks experienced in exporting and importing food items as well as intra-city transportation through tolling will be removed.

These are some of the immediate interventions this government will put in place to tackle this crisis.

Principally, one of the major positive outcomes of these interventions will be a massive boost in employment and job creation.

Indeed, agriculture already accounts for about 35.21 per cent of employment in Nigeria (as at 2021), the target is to double this percentage to about 70% in the long term.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s mandate to create jobs for our teeming youth population will be achieved with between 5 to 10 million more jobs created within the value chain, working with the current 500,000 hectares of arable land and the several hundreds of thousands more farmlands to be developed in the medium term.

In closing, this administration understands that food and water are the bedrock of survival and therefore is calling on all Nigerians to partner with us in ensuring the success of this strategic intervention. This administration is working assiduously to ensure that Nigerians do not struggle with their essential needs.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu wishes to use this medium to continue to assure Nigerians that this administration will not relent in its efforts until all strategic interventions are deployed efficiently and effectively and until every household is positively impacted. Our president is the president of all Nigerians and the father of the nation. The renewed hope mandate remains alive and no one, absolutely no one, will be left behind.

We r in a confussed nation read and digest

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, had passed a judgement which ordered the incumbent governor of Ebonyi state David Umahi and his deputy, Dr. Kelechi Igwe, to vacate their offices for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A counter pronouncement by a Federal High Court in Abuja has affirmed that the Governor enjoys immunity as an elected governor and that votes secured during an election legally belongs to the candidate and not a political party.

Some one should help us explain this conflicting judgment from the same apex court in Nigeria Abuja to be specific

NIGERLITES ARISE FOR SCHOOL OF HANDICAP MINNA

I thought I have seen it all after the investigative reporting on Maryam Babangida girls science secondary school Minna for the denial of the students to use available water in the school primeses by some alleged staff of the school

Not until I saw an influx of students with special needs or disabilities carrying buckets and jerican heading to Bosso Estate in search of water for their cooking, school kitchen, to wash their clothes, to bath and other domestic use In the school it baffled me when I saw this so I decided to asked what is the reason behind what I saw, I stopped one of the students majority who are female to ask her some questions someone saw me and he approached us to also comfirm where they were going, who asked them to go and search for water?

I try using sign language to communicate to her but it didn't work so the other man asked them where they were going? Reply search for water. He further asked what happened to their school own? She said i don't know. The man could not go further again so we allowed them to go and search for the water.

I was terrified by this ugly incident happing in Niger State from denials of students who won medals for the state their little token, to zeepads, to sit at home, to water scarcity in our boarding schools, this scarcity will only endangered the lives of the students some unpatriotic citizens might cease the advantage and lure young students and defire them or r**e them and some will be introduced into consumption of hard drugs, while some bad gangs might introduce the students into their groups all in the name of fetching water outside the school primeses. Mind you this students are special students who are either born with Such problem or got it while growing up.

If some an individuals can volunteer to open their house tap for the students to fetch how about government, this is unacceptable, this sounds like child labor or slavery, if government can no longer cater for the children with disabilities they should close down the school or convert it to day school even though from investigation we learn that the school is combination of boarding and day, we can no longer fold our arms to watch things going wrong in our society enough of all this from ministry of Education, if the stakeholders are not capable please the governor should do the needful because they are running away from their responsibility

Just like how Niger state water board reliefed maryam babangida science collage minna with water tanks it will not be out of place for water board to replicate the same gesture to School of Handicap minna

This is a wake up call to all the concern citizens of our dear state, the educational stakeholders, wake up Ministery of education, wake up Commissioner of Education

before I drop my pen I will ask this question. Where did we got it wrong?

Long live Niger state, long live federal republic of Nigeria.

FOUR FRIENDS TORTURE 28-YEAR-OLD TO DEATHS OVER MISSING PHONE.

Four men have been arraigned before a Yola Chief Magistrate’s Court over the death of a 28-year-old man, Adamu Ahmadu, who was wrongly accused of stealing a phone.

Ahmadu, who was the son of a security guard working with the Adamawa Broadcasting Corporation, Yola, was accused by Hamidu Umar, the son of the deposed ward head of Damare, Yola South Local Government Area, of stealing his mobile phone on January 22, 2022.

Though the deceased denied the allegation, Umar reportedly insisted he produce the phone.

It was learnt that the 55-year-old and three others resorted to torture to force out a confession from the victim.

The other three defendants were identified as Sholle Manas, Faisal and Nahau.

Umar, assisted by Faisal and Nahau, allegedly took the victim to an uncompleted building around 5.30pm and tortured him with wood and broken blocks.

Ahmadu was said to have sustained fractures in his two hands, among other injuries, which resulted in his death.

During their re-arraignment on February 15, 2022, Umar maintained his not guilty plea, while the second defendant, Manas, who had initially pleaded not guilty, changed his plea.

Manas told the court while pleading guilty that he met the first defendant and the two others beating the deceased, adding that he was instructed by Umar to join them in beating Ahmadu.

It was gathered that the third and fourth defendants, listed in the court records, were at large.

According to a first information report, “Ahmadu was rescued by the new Ward Head of Damare, Sahabo Umar, who also reported the case at the Wuro Hausa Police Station.

“However, Umar, upon his return home, found the missing handset on a sofa in his palour.”

The report further stated that the victim, who was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yola, for medical attention, died on Sunday, February 13, 2022 and was buried in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Chief Magistrate, Dimas Gwamu, adjourned the case till the following day for continuation of trial and sentencing of the defendant who pleaded guilty.

ADULTERATED PETROLEUM A TRUE DEFINITIONS OF WHO NIGERIANS ARE

BY SULEIMAN

It was speculated that in 2022 fuel price will increased to 350 per liter or so and a lot of fuel stations, independent marketers, contractors and importers where already prepared to that effect, not until the federal government had a second thought about it and suspended it, the reason for suspension may be for political reasons.

The suspension didn't go down well with some of the stakeholders and for them to take vengeance on the federal government action they imported adulterated fuel to cause calamity in the country which we are currently facing, the current scarcity is an artificial scarcity well planned majority of whom this scarcity affects is the ordinary Nigerian who is in search of daily bread.

Now I believe on the poor get poorer the rich get richer due to our actions who are the Petroleum stations pump attendants? Who are the black marketers? Who are those thugs at the gate? and who are those struggling to get the fuel? If you where able to answer these questions you will understand that when ever we get the slightest opportunity we always thought of how to suffer one another except 1/99 who cannot bear the pains to see others suffering.
Let me give examples of those who do not what to see people suffering because of fuel in Niger State, qoute me any where if I am wrong please prove me

Their is this fuel station at minna city gate called OANDO felling station where they dispense first come first serve, where you must join the cue no matter who you are, where the exist gate is left open, where shunting is highly prohibited, where the entrance door is left opened, where no security operatives is attached to. This is because he is sincere and his workers are sincere too, his business capital is not mixed with corrupt ones, he neither accepts nor give bribes he is not party to corruption, he always stand to ensure justice is served at all cost.

If you can recall recently Niger state government made pronouncements of banning the sales of petrol in jerican and others for security reasons, and even the vehicles should be monitored today who knows how many unpatriotic citizens are buying this products to criminals.

I saw someone came to buy fuel from the back marker where I was trying to negotiate the price of petrol to 250 per liter he came and bought seven 30 liter jerican at 400 per liter without negotiating the guy told me no fuel he was happy saying he made huge profit and even gave me one thousand naira to add to what I have and go and buy from another person I told him i do not aid and abet criminals he was so shocked and said what do you mean are you now calling me criminal? And I said no do you knew this person and where he is taking this fuel to? He said his face looks so suspicious but that is not his business.

Now to those who are hoarding this products and later sale to black marketers in the night because they give bribe and the black marketers who buy at a cheaper price and sale at an expensive price and also who deliberately imported adulterated fuel to Nigeria you all should know that you are part and parcel of those suppling guns, vehicles to terrorists, because you supply fuel to their vehicles to go out and attack innocent citizens.

This is the right time for any government who is serious about the fight of insurgency should come out and address his people on the negative impact of hoarding fuel at this time of insecurity and mobilize it men to go in search of those whom sale at mid night to black marketers.

This is my honest opinion on fuel scarcity at this critical time
