Dangote Donates 80,000 10kg Bags Of Rice To Support Vulnerable Households In Lagos

•••Sanwo-Olu Describes Donation As Extreme Kindness, Compassion

Lagos State Government has received 80,000 bags of 10 kilogrammes of rice to bolster its interventions targeted at ameliorating the impacts of current hardship on vulnerable households in the State.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Wednesday, personally received fully loaded trucks laden with 80,000 units of 10kg bags of rice supplied by Aliko Dangote Foundation for immediate distribution to various segments of the vulnerable population.

Africa's richest man and Chairman of Aliko Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, was accompanied by his billionaire associate, Mr. Femi Otedola, and daughter, Fatimah Dangote, to fulfil the corporate social responsibility aimed at supporting the nutritional needs of residents in the fasting period and easing the prevailing situation of hardship.

The intervention was part of the Foundation’s ongoing rollout of one million bags of 10kg rice to vulnerable families across 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, with Lagos taking the second largest share of the largesse.

Sanwo-Olu described the gesture as “extreme act of kindness”, noting that Dangote had always stood out as a “unique breed of citizen” enamoured with love and compassion for the downtrodden.

The Governor said: “For extending this gesture of love and kindness to the needy and vulnerable people in the country, Alhaji Dangote has shown that he is a Nigerian that has chosen to be different. The trait of Dangote’s humanity is not just living in his body; he has, by this huge intervention, openly demonstrated the trait of human kindness he possesses in no small measure.

“The donation of 80,000 units of 10kg bags of rice demonstrates that philosophy of the Foundation. This is extending empathy to those in need of little assistance in these difficult times. This direct intervention translates to compassion and goes beyond the pursuit of only profit and wealth. This is a period the Government and private sector need to take joint action to ameliorate the pains being experienced by citizens due to inflation.”

Sanwo-Olu said the supplies would shore up the State-led interventions and help to alleviate the food shortage caused by inflation.

The Governor said his administration had rolled out key multi-sectoral initiatives to assist Lagosians cope, including slashing of fares for public transport, reviving of health palliative, and discounted food items supplies across the State.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that the State Government would be distributing 100,000 combo boxes of food items to thousands of households free of charge, urging private organisations to emulate the Foundation’s gesture and support the ongoing efforts by the State to ramp up its interventions.

He said: “We have also secured 100,000 units of combo food packs for distribution to various segments of vulnerable communities in the State. We are finalising the logistics for the delivery. This is in addition to the weekly supply of discounted food items to various community markets.

“We embark on these initiatives in order to accommodate and assist the majority of the population cope in this period. I thank Lagosians for their patience and demonstration of resilience despite the challenges we are all passing through. When we work together, we will come out of this situation better and stronger.”

Dangote said the gesture underscored the Dangote Group’s commitment to exhibit spirit of compassion and solidarity with the vulnerable people, noting that the Foundation had fulfilled the mission yearly over the past 30 years to support Nigerians during fasting periods.

Dangote said Lagos became the second State after Kano where distribution of rice was being done, stressing that Lagos had strategic importance for the success of the outreach.

He said: “We recognise that the current circumstances where a significant number of Nigerians are experiencing hardship due to prevailing food prices inflation requires that we, the Dangote Foundation, provide succour for those affected. That is why we have reserved 200,000 metric tons of rice for distribution across 774 Local Government Areas in the country.”

The Foundation’s Managing Director, Ms. Zouera Youssoufou, said the coincidence of Ramadan and Lent compelled the organisation to raise the volume of food items, pointing out that the largesse was being extended to all faiths.

She said the Foundation would handle the distribution of the items, while Lagos Government would provide the beneficiaries.

Breaking! Appeal Court unanimously affirms Sanwo-Olu's, Hamzat's election
..PDP' came empty-handed left empty-handed, say justices

The State and National Assembly Appeal Court sitting in Lagos has dismissed the appeal of the the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate Mr. Olajide Adediran, challenging the victory of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu as the validly elected winner of the March 18 election for the Office of the Governor of Lagos State.

The three-man panel unanimously affirmed the decision of the Lagos State Governorship Election Petitions Tribunal which on September 25 affirmed the victory of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

It held that the appellants failed to prove their allegations of forgery and non-qualification against Sanwo-Olu and his deputy Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.

"Even though they were all pre-election matters, the appellants (PDP and Adeniran) still failed to prove them," the justices held.

"The appellants came empty-handed and left empty-handed. They merely enjoyed their day in court.

"Their petition is dismissed," the justices added. ‎

Bamise: Pathologist reveals details of autopsy conducted on ‘murdered’ Lagos BRT passenger

A pathologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Prof. Sunday Shoyemi has released the details of the autopsy conducted on Oluwabamise Ayanwole.

Ayanwole is the 22-year-old fashion designer, who was murdered on a BRT bus operated by the Lagos State Government.

On Friday, Prof. Shoyemi from the autopsy result disclosed that the death of Ayanwole was caused by a blunt force trauma on the head.

The pathologist gave evidence before a Lagos State High Court sitting at Tafawa Balewa Square, at the ongoing trial of a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) driver, Andrew Ominnikoron.

Ominnikoron is standing trial for alleged r**e and murder of Ayanwole.

Shoyemi said that after his examination of both the external and internal body of Ayamwole, he established that her death was due to craniocerebral injury following a blunt force trauma.

The witness is also a lecturer at Lagos State University (LASU).

He was led in evidence by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Babajide Martins.

Shoyemi told the court that prior to the autopsy, the body of the deceased was embalmed.

He said that the body had no clothing but noted that a silver-coloured ring was found on the middle right finger of the deceased.

Shoyemi testified that he observed a bruise on the left side of the forehead of the deceased, and a bruise above her right ear.

He also told the court that he observed a large bruise on the back of the skull of the deceased.

“In addition, there was a bruise on the elbow region. These findings were external.

“Upon opening, I saw what we call subdural hematoma which means bleeding into the soft tissue covering the skull or bleeding into the brain.

“This was noticed in the frontal area as well as on the back of the skull.

“At the back of the skull, there were multiple fractures which means bone broken into two or more pieces,” Shoyemi said.

The pathologist also said that there was a fracture on the bone above the ear.

According to him, bruises were also found on both lips of the deceased.

Shoyemi, who was the ninth and last prosecution witness said, “In the light of all the findings and the internal findings, death was ascribed to severe craniacerebral injury following a force blunt trauma.”

The witness further told the court that during the autopsy, he took samples from the deceased’s body for the purpose of identification and toxicology.

He said that the samples were taken to the DNA forensic laboratory.

During cross-examination by the defence counsel, Mr Abayomi Omotubora, the witness told the court that information about the deceased was given to him by the investigating police officer before the autopsy was carried out.

After the cross-examination, the defendant’s counsel informed the court that he had a pending application to recall some prosecution witnesses for further cross-examination.

In response, the prosecution counsel objected.

Justice Sherifat Sonaike reserved ruling on the application until November 2.

Ominnikoron is facing a five-count charge bordering on r**e, sexual assault and murder preferred against him by Lagos State Government.

The prosecution had told the court that Ominnikoron conspired with others now at large to r**e and murder 22-year-old Ayanwole, a passenger on the BRT he was driving.

The prosecution added that the defendant had sexual in*******se with Ayanwole without her consent, and murdered her about 7.00 p.m., between Lekki Ajah Expressway and Carter Bridge, on Feb. 26, 2022.

The prosecution also alleged that the defendant and others at large, threw Ayanwole out of a moving BRT between Lekki- Ajah Expressway and Cater bridge.

According to the prosecution, the offences contravene Sections 411, 223, 260, and 165 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The 48-year-old defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
