Prof. Gregory Ibe at 60!

Gregory Ibe, the founder of Gregory University, Uturu, Abia state, was born 60 years ago today in Kaduna. Greg is an industrialist, philanthropist and educationist.

He was born in December 1963 in Kaduna where his parents, natives of Uturu, lived then and worked. Although born and brought up outside his parents' nativity, Chief Gregory Ibe never ceased to be the quintessence of an Igbo son who is in perfect harmony with the rest of mankind world over. He adores his home place, Uturu, and makes Uturu adorable to the World.

He was not born into easy circumstances of life. Indeed, he had a raw deal with poverty in his early life which rather spurred him with the determination to attain great heights today. His tough early life toughened him to complete his primary, secondary and tertiary education, alternating between work and education. That was perhaps nature's way to prepare him for his future role in Igbo land and Nigeria at large as the hope for the hopeless.

Chief Gregory Ibe's alma maters include:

Boys High School, Ihube, Imo State
School of Accountancy and Management Studies, Aba
Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu
California Coast University, Santa Ana, CA where he obtained his Master’s Degree in 2003 and Doctorate Degree in Management in 2006.

Chief Gregory Ibe is a great name in Igbo land and Nigeria at large particularly in education sector. Currently he constitutes the private sector spirit that is shaping science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria. His involvement in supply of the state-of-the-art teaching/learning equipment with innovative pedagogy in the delivery of the subjects. His intervention is currently transforming the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in Nigeria at all levels of education. He has implanted entrepreneurship as curricular innovation in education and particularly in Business, Engineering and Technical/Vocational Education.

Gregory Ibe, from onset, a propagator of Akụ Ruo Ụlọ:

The Igbo centric businessman who has brought back his business interests to Igboland especially in Uturu with the mindset of Akụ Ruo Ụlọ and also to train the future generations. He has pioneered several Igbo events including the world Igbo congress that took place at Gregory University Uturu few years ago. During his run for Governor he performed medical outreach to all local governments in Abia state and performed surgeries for the elderly. As well as scholarship scheme of over 100 million naira for future of the south east. Currently, he's building a 1000 bed hospital in the east and once completed it will be responsible for extending quality healthcare to the people of the south east.

Gregory Ibe contested for the office of Abia state Governor in the last election under APGA.

Gregory Ibe is a great Igbo son who wants the best for ndigbo and on his 60th birthday we just want to celebrate his efforts to better the lives of the people. Taking his gifts that God has granted him and sharing with the world.

Let's Retweet to celebrate Prof. Ibe at 60.

Today in History: Aluu killings took place.

It is exactly 11 years ago today (October 5, 2012) since Chiadika Biringa, Favour Erikena, Ugonna Obuzor and Toku Llyod, were gruesomely lynched and burned to death for no reason in an obscure village of Aluu in Rivers state. They were first sons of their parents.

The Aluu Four lynching was a necklace lynching that involved four young students of the University of Port Harcourt. They were all lynched after they were falsely accused of theft in Aluu, a community in Obio/Akpor local government area, Rivers State. Chiadika, Lloyd, Favour and Ugonna were all friends, first sons of their parents, and students of University of Port Harcourt. The four students were also occasional roommates. Ugonna sometimes spent the night with Favour who lived outside the campus because his residence on campus was broken into multiple times. Ugonna had a debtor called Bright who was owing him some undisclosed amount of money which bothered him much. In time, Ugonna managed to find out Bright's particular location. He sought the help of his cousin Lloyd, childhood and longtime friend Favour and roommate Chiadika. Together, four of them ventured into a journey of no return. The four students finally arrived in the house of the debtor at about midnight, a time that seem odd for anyone to move about, carrying axe, pen knife, and cutlass in order to scare the debtor. In the cause of settling the debt, a misunderstanding ensued which turned sour and eventually turned into a fight. A neighbor of the debtor heard the noise and started screaming, claiming that the men were there to steal laptops and mobile phones. The vigilante group from Aluu, was alerted with the impression that the students were the criminals disturbing the community. Before the Vigilante group from Aluu would arrive, angry mobs has started chasing the four men through the streets with stick and stone-wielding, caught them, stripped naked, beaten and tortured until they were almost unconscious. Afterwards, in the presence of a crowd, the Nigerian police officers and some Nigerians, they were dragged through mud, had concrete slabs dropped on their heads and car tires filled with petrol wrapped around their necks (thus "necklacing") in order to burn them. Nobody could stop it, not even the Nigerian police force. A sister of Tekena was nearby and then discovered that her brother was about to be killed via "jungle justice." She tried to intervene and rescue him with his friends by screaming at the top of her voice at the mob and reiterating their innocence but she was overpowered by the size of the mob. People from the mob told her to flee. In a last attempt to save her brother's life, she decided to contact other family members and the police, but the men had been killed by the time the required assistance was sought. The murders were filmed with a mobile phone and uploaded on the Internet. The lynching was widely viewed in Nigeria and the rest of the world. The crime further exposed the "jungle justice" or "mob justice"' which is still prevalent in Nigeria today. Several people were arrested in connection with the crime. On July 31, 2017, 4 years and 9 months after the horrid incident, Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt sentenced to death a Police Sergeant, Mr. Lucky Orji, David Chinasa Ogbada and Ikechukwu Louis Amadi, (aka Kapoon) for their active involvement in the murder of the four students of University of Port Harcourt. The court also discharged and acquitted four of the suspects in the trial, Saviour Johnny, Abiodun Yusuf, Joshua Ekpe and Cyril Abang. MI Abaga's song "Ashes" was in their memory.

11 years after, forever in our hearts

This Day in 2013: Achebe was laid to Rest.

Chinua Achebe was a renowned writer, poet, professor and critic. His 1958 debut novel, "Things Fall Apart" shot him to fame. On this day in 2013, he was buried in his hometown, Ogidi in Anambra state, aged 83. A host of dignitaries attended the funeral including the former Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan. Crowds of mourners surrounded the church, some wearing traditional shirts emblazoned with Mr Achebe's image, Peter Obi was one of them. The author is widely regarded as the founding father of African literature in English.

However, much of what he abhorred was on full display at the service - political patronage and the trappings of power. Local politicians were escorted into church by men from the State Security Service wielding sophisticated weapons while a large number of men and women came dressed head to toe in political party outfits. President Goodluck Jonathan and former Ghana President, John Dramani Mahama flew in by helicopter to attend the service at the packed Anglican church in Ogidi. Thousands of mourners followed proceedings from huge marquees outside.

Goodluck Jonathan said Mr Achebe's writings - which were often fiercely critical of Nigeria's leadership - remained an inspiration for political leaders to do better. He said he had not known Mr Achebe personally, but had admired him. In a reference to the author's last book, There Was a Country, Mr Jonathan said: "All of us must work together so that our children will know there is a country."

After the church service, Mr Achebe was buried in a mausoleum on the family compound in a private ceremony. Mr Achebe's body had arrived back in Nigeria on Wednesday from the US, where he died in March 2013 at the age of 83. Prof. Chinua Achebe was given a colourful, grand send off in his home town of Ogidi.

The white man is very clever, he came quietly with his religion. We were amused at his foolishness and allowed him to stay. Now he has won our brothers and our clan can no longer act like one. He has put knife on the things that held us together and we have fallen apart.

Today in History: Abagana Ambush took place.

Abagana Ambush of March 31, 1968 was an ambush by Biafran guerrilla troops led by Major Jonathan Uchendu that wiped out the Nigerian 2 Division. During this ambush, the Nigerian Army suffered the heaviest defeat in the civil war. Of the 5,000 Nigerian troops ambushed, only a very small number survived, including the 2nd Division's commander, Col. Murtala Ramat Muhammed. Murtala was said to have assembled and deployed a convoy of 105 vehicles which included troop carriers, fuel tanker and four armoured cars to facilitate this plan on March 31, 1968. However, the Biafran secret intelligence gained knowledge of the plan and reported it to a higher Biafran command which instantly planned a deadly ambush. A 700-man troop, led by Major Uchendu, was given a huge task by Col. Achuzie to ambush the invading Nigerian troops at Abagana in the Enugu-Onitsha highway. The unsuspecting Nigerian 2nd division, numbering about 5000 soldiers, marched on until they were halted by a surprise attack from a smaller but well-prepared Biafran army. The Biafran army allowed the Nigerian army to march right into their midst before raining bullets on them. A locally made rocket called Ogbunigwe was crucially used during the Ambush. One of the Ogbunigwe rockets was launched directly at a fuel tanker in the Nigerian army convoy leading to chains of explosions which created a 450-metre great fire that incinerated men and metals within seconds. Refuelling vehicles exploded and burnt many infantry units. After the Ogbunigwe rocket attack, Biafran soldiers opened fire, killing what is left of the shocked 2nd division of the Nigerian Army. About 2,500 Nigerian army died in the attack; many others scampered in different directions. Col. Murtala Muhammed was relieved of duty afterwards and never commanded a division again during the war. Major Uchendu, the commander of the Biafran Army that led the Abagana Ambush with the advice of Col. Achuzie, recounted that the sight of the 2nd division convoy almost paralyzed his troops. His boys were so anxious to start firing, more out of panic than anything else. He asked them to remain calm until he gave the order. He allowed much of the Nigerian Army convoy to pass through. His boys were shocked why he would allowed them go through into the Biafran held zone. They were nervous and suspicious, yet they trusted his military gallantry and so awaited to know his strategy.

The Abagana ambush was the most resounding battle won by the Biafrans during the Nigerian-Biafran civil war. Abagana Ambush of March 31, 1968 is regarded as the most successful Ambush in Africa's history. The END.
