HOLY NWEJE: The Story of an Igbo Saint

Hezekiah Okolo-Ogwugwu Nweje was an Anglican priest from Onitsha, Anambra State. He was born in August 1919 and passed away in June 1962. 🕊️

Why was he nicknamed Holy Nweje? Find out below!

He was extremely righteous, humble, and easy-going. A true humanitarian, he was deeply devoted to the things of God. Whatever gifts he received from the church he shepherded were always shared with the vineyard workers, the poor, and the less privileged. He never hoarded anything at the expense of the needy. His philosophy was that wealth meant sharing what you have without hoarding it. At one point, he was nominated for the position of Anglican Bishop on the Niger, but he declined and nominated someone he felt was more qualified.

Rev. Hezekiah Nweje was regarded as an upright, spotless, and righteous man. These outstanding qualities he possessed in his lifetime earned him the name 'Holy Nweje,' a title that reflected just how holy a person could be. He believed anger should never outlive the moment.

In 1956, Onitsha and Obosi clashed over land. Called as a witness, Rev. Nweje told the judge, 'Ani bu ani Chukwu' – the land belongs to the Lord. His words ended the dispute. He always stood for peace.

In April 1958, during the daytime, local thieves invaded his house in Onitsha and stole some tubers of yam and a fowl. He ran after them and told them to come back and take more, citing hunger as the reason for their desperate act. What a man!

Rev. Nweje was so devoted to holiness that he sometimes forgot intimacy with his wife. Always in church, preaching and evangelising, until his mother reminded him to also fulfil his duties as a husband.

In Igboland, if you were seen or perceived as an upright person, you would be called or nicknamed “Holy Nweje.”

So, the next time you’re called Holy Nweje, do not feel ashamed or mocked, it speaks well of you.

Nweje Memorial Secondary School and Nweje Lane, in the Onitsha metropolis, were named after him to immortalize his legacy.
