Supreme Court To Deliver Ruling On PDP’s Suit Against Tinubu May 26

The Supreme Court will deliver judgment in a suit filed by Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), seeking the disqualification of President-elect, Bola Tinubu and his deputy, Kashim Shettima, from the February 25 election.

The party had in the suit filed on July 28 last year challenged the validity of Tinubu/Shettima’s ticket for the presidential election.

BREAKING: Former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, Visits Tinubu In Abuja

President-elect Bola Tinubu, on Tuesday, received former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, in Abuja.

Tinubu, in a tweet, said the visit afforded him the opportunity to discuss areas of mutual interests with the former British leader, who is the founder of the Tony Blair Institute for Good Governance.

He wrote, “I received former British Prime Minister and founder Tony Blair Institute for Good Governance, Mr Tony Blair, at the Defence House, Abuja, earlier today. We discussed areas of mutual interests and how Nigeria can continue to benefit from the amazing work of the Institute.”

Abuja CCTV Project: Court Orders Buhari To Account For $460m Chinese Loan

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to “account for the spending of $460 million Chinese loan to fund the failed Abuja Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) project.”

The Court also ordered the government to “publish the total amount of money paid to Chinese and local companies and contractors and specific details of the names of the companies and contractors and status of the implementation of the project.”

AMVCA 2023: Tobi Bakre, Bimbo Ademoye, Funke Akindele, Afolayan Win Big

Notable Nollywood actors and actresses like Osas Ighodaro and Tobi Bakre were some of the biggest winners of the 2023 AMVCA held on Saturday night at Eko Convention Centre, Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry graced the event, which featured performances from artists like Tiwa Savage, Iyanya and Spyro.

Tobi won Best Actor in a Drama, while Osas was named ‘Best Actress in a Drama’.

Bimbo won ‘Best Actress in a Comedy’ while Broda Shaggi won ‘Best Actor in a Comedy Drama, Movie, or TV Series’.

One of the surprises of the evening was Kunle Afolayan’s movie ‘Anikulapo’ losing the best movie West Africa category to Brotherhood.

Anikulapo bagged the most nominations in 16 categories, alongside Choke, Kanaani, Red Carpet, and Four Four Forty-Four.

Sadly, they all lost out. Anikulapo, however, won the best overall movie award.

The awards announcement was aired via African Magic channels hosted by Na Zozi Tunzi and IK Osakioduwa.

PHOTOS: President-Elect, Bola Tinubu, Arrives Abuja From Europe Ahead Of Inauguration

President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has returned to Nigeria after a working visit to Europe.

Tinubu had on May 10 left the country, just two weeks after he returned to the country from a three-country tour which saw him visiting London, Saudi Arabia and Paris.

He was received at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja by Senate President Ahmad Lawan, House Deputy Speaker Idris Wase, Kano governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, Senator Godswill Akpabio, amongst others.

According to an earlier statement from the Office of the President-elect signed by Tunde Rahman, the trip became necessary to allow Tinubu carry out some tasks without unnecessary pressure and distractions.

“He will use the opportunity of the trip to finetune the transition plans and programmes, and his policy options with some of his key aides without unnecessary pressures and distractions”, Rahman had stated.

BREAKING: Peter Obi Supporters Mob Lamidi Apapa In Court

Self-acclaimed factional Chairman of the Labour Party, Lamidi Apapa, was rescued on Tuesday by the Police while being mobbed by supporters of the party’s Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, in court.

Apapa had on April 25, 2023, asked the Presidential Lection Tribunal to withdraw Peter Obi’s petition against the President-elect, Bola Tinubu.

But the Labour Party acting National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, in a statement urged the Tribunal in Abuja to disregard the “antics” by Apapa, who is a suspended Deputy National Chairman of the Labour Party.

BREAKING: Seun Kuti Arrested, Handcuffed Over Assault On Police Officer

Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti was on Monday arrested and handcuffed following his visit to the Lagos State police commissioner, Idowu Owohunwa.

It was gathered that the musician went to see the police commissioner in company with a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika.

He was however arrested and handcuffed by the police and moved to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti for interrogation.

Benjamin Hundeyin, the spokesperson for the state police command, on Monday confirmed Seun Kuti’s arrest by tweeting, “SERIOUS ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER: SEUN KUTI TURNS SELF IN.

“Afrobeat musician, Seun Kuti, in the early hours of today turned himself in at the Lagos State Police Command Headquarters, Ikeja, in company of his lawyer and family representative.

“He has been placed under arrest in line with the law. The Command appreciates the public for their concern and assures that the ongoing investigation will be detailed, transparent, professionally pursued; and justice will be manifestly served for all parties involved.”

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Usman Alkali Baba, had ordered Seun’s arrest after a video of the musician assaulting a policeman surfaced online.

In the viral video, Seun is seen involved in a heated argument with the officer who was standing in the middle of a busy road.

“The IGP has equally ordered a speedy and full investigation into the remote and immediate cause(s) of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.”

“IGP Usman Alkali Baba assures Nigerians that acts of contempt/disdain for symbols of authority will not be tolerated while offenders of such hideous crimes will be surely brought to book,” the spokesman for the Nigeria Police Force, Muyiwa Adejobi had said in a statement.

Meanwhile, reacting via his Instastory on Saturday, Kuti said the officer attempted to kill him and his family members.

He added that the policeman had apologised and had been forgiven him.

Kuti wrote, “He tried to kill me and my family. I have the proof but I no dey chase clout. He has apologised and I have agreed not to press charges. Make una mind una business make the poor guy no lose him job.”

Seun also said he would give the police full cooperation to uncover who is wrong.

“I welcome the investigation and will give my full cooperation! I also pray to the IG that whoever is wrong should be indicted,” the musician said in a second Instastory.

JUST IN: Nigerian Chef, Hilda Baci, Breaks Guinness World Record For Longest Cooking Marathon

Nigerian chef and entrepreneur, Hilda Effiong Bassey, popularly known as Hilda Baci, has broken the Guinness World Record for the longest cooking marathon by an individual after cooking for more than 87 hours, 47 minutes.

The record was held by India’s Lata Tondon in 2019.

She will keep cooking to extend the record and set a new one at 96 hours.

The restaurateur kick-started the competition on Thursday at exactly 4pm after she turned on her cooker.

The event, which is taking place at Amore Gardens in Lekki, Lagos, is being live-streamed on YouTube, and several celebrities, including Nigerians have defied the rain to cheer up the visibly tired chef.

The cook-a-thon’s Instagram account, revealed that the event is headline sponsored by GB Foods. Other sponsors include Arla Foods, BaigeWallet, Filmhouse, Jumbo, Uber and Woodscope.

The Cookathon has garnered attention both online and at the physical venue where celebrities are trooping in to support the chef.

Nollywood actor, Charles Okocha; actress, Kate Henshaw; singer, Tiwa Savage; media personality, Enioluwa, and many others appeared at the event.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also visited the venue on Sunday to cheer up Baci.

Filmmaker, Kevin Adetiba, wrote on twitter, “REALLY rooting for HILDA BACHI. Don’t know her personally, but her drive, ambition and resilience, inspires and motivates me IMMENSELY.

“Sending her prayers and the best vibes to PUSH THROUGH. She’s inspiring people she doesn’t even know. GO HILDA…YOU GOT THIS!!!”

Former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party’s Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also lauded Baci for her “determination and focus.”

“The efforts being made by Hilda Effiong Bassey (Hilda Baci) to beat the current Guinness World Record for cooking for 4 days nonstop shows the true Nigerian spirit of hardwork and resilience. I applaud her determination and focus on the goal, which are inspiring many Nigerian youths to live their dreams through hardwork and dedication.

“I wish her well on this noble journey to pen her name in the golden book of history. -PO,” he tweeted on Sunday.

Baci is not new to cooking competitions, she was a participant in the maiden edition of the Jollof Face-off Competition in 2021. The talented chef made Nigeria proud by winning the competition and walking away with a grand prize of $5000.

10th National Assembly: Vice President-Elect, Kashim Shettima, To Engage G7 Aspirants Vying For Speakership Position

The Vice President-elect, Sen. Kashim Shettima, has promised to meet other aspirants in race for the 10th House of Representative Speakers in a bid to seek for truce.

Mr Shettima made the promise when over 60 members-elect met with him at his Abuja residence to back the ambition of Rep Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu as the consensus candidates for the Speaker and Deputy Speaker seats ahead of June 5 inauguration.

Mr Shettima described on of the leading aspirants, Aliyu Betara, as his brother.

He said they are both from the same state and region, adding that he has the best of relationship with him.

“I met him two night ago and at the end of the day there will be no winner and no vanquished and I have also met Rep. Ahmed Wase and we will continue the engagement”, Shettima said.

The Vice President-elect said he would ensure members-elect had a rancour free national assembly election in the choice of who becomes the speaker of the 10th House of Reps.

According to him, “Rep. Miriam Onuhoa is my friend and I will reach out to her, my only request to the incoming leadership is to be just and inclusive.”

Mr Shettima said what the leadership of the All Progressives Congress, APC, was trying to ensure fairness in the distribution of the four positions in the country.

He disclosed that the president-elect, Tinubu, was more inclined towards having the number three citizen from either South South or South East of the country.

He added that the stability of the country was more important than other considerations, saying, “we are talking of stability, inclusivity and togetherness of the country.”

He said nation building remains a work in progress and politics was about perception, adding that his assignment was to reach out to all aspirants in the race.

“I have started and I will continue in that engagement. I have respect for the House of Reps, they have a long memory. we will embrace them and ensure harmonious relationship,” he added.

He urged the consensus candidates to ensure fairness in the distribution of committees, urging them to distribute it across political divides.

Also speaking, Mr Abbas expressed appreciation to the APC, the president-elect and vice president-elect for considering him worthy to be chosen as consensus candidate.

He said, “I assure you we will not disappoint you, we will ensure there is synergy and cooperation between the executive and legislature, so Nigeria can win all the time.”

He said there was no time in the history of Nigeria where former lawmakers were elected as President and Vice President like the case of Tinubu and Shettima, who were both senators at different times.

On his part, Rep. Benjamin Kalu said although the South East did not vote for the APC, but the party still deemed it fit to give the zone the position of Deputy Speaker.

“My south eastern region did not do well in this election, but you and the party are magnanimous enough and you decided to show that cohesion is necessary irrespective of our votes”, Kalu said.

He said that the over 40 members-elect from the South East would follow the decision of the APC irrespective of party affiliations.

“We will give the right support when needed, we will do more than you witnessed in the 9th assembly. However, the doctrine of separation of power will not be overlooked.”

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the over 60 members-elect in attendance cut across party divides as they queue behind the candidacy of Abbas and Kalu.

NAN reports that the aggrieved aspirants have formed a coalition known as G-7 which include: Ahmed Wase, Aliyu Betara, Yusuf Gagdi, Sada Soli, Alhassan Ado-Doguwa, Sani Jaji and Miriam Onuhoa.
