Dr. Dora Akunyili (14 July 1954 – 7 June 2014) served as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) from 2001 to 2008. She made a phenomenal impact on Nigeria’s counterfeit/fake drug problem.

As of June 2006, Akunyili had convicted 45 counterfeiters with 56 cases in court, pending. She was fighting against influential and powerful counterfeit drug traders who could have otherwise easily bribed their way through.
