We are all devastated by the news we have just heard from Balmoral.

The death of Her Majesty The Queen is a huge shock to the nation and to the world.

Queen Elizabeth II was the rock on which modern Britain was built.

Our country has grown and flourished under her reign.

Britain is the great country it is today because of her.

She ascended the throne just after the Second World War.

She championed the development of the Commonwealth - from a small group of seven countries to a family of 56 nations spanning every continent of the world.

We are now a modern, thriving, dynamic nation.

Through thick and thin, Queen Elizabeth II provided us with the stability and the strength that we needed.

She was the very spirit of Great Britain – and that spirit will endure.

She has been our longest-ever reigning monarch.

It is an extraordinary achievement to have presided with such dignity and grace for 70 years.

Her life of service stretched beyond most of our living memories.

In return, she was loved and admired by the people in the United Kingdom and all around the world.

She has been a personal inspiration to me and to many Britons. Her devotion to duty is an example to us all.

Earlier this week, at 96, she remained determined to carry out her duties as she appointed me as her 15th Prime Minister.

Throughout her life she has visited more than 100 countries and she has touched the lives of millions around the world.

In the difficult days ahead, we will come together with our friends across the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and the world to celebrate her extraordinary lifetime of service.

It is a day of great loss, but Queen Elizabeth II leaves a great legacy.

Today the Crown passes - as it is has done for more than a thousand years - to our new monarch, our new head of state:

His Majesty King Charles III.

With the King’s family, we mourn the loss of his mother.

And as we mourn, we must come together as a people to support him.

To help him bear the awesome responsibility that he now carries for us all.

We offer him our loyalty and devotion just as his mother devoted so much to so many for so long.

And with the passing of the second Elizabethan age, we usher in a new era in the magnificent history of our great country,

– exactly as Her Majesty would have wished –

by saying the words…God save the King.

Dr Nentawe Yilwatda on ASUU strike;

I had a chat with a friend who kept telling me that Nigerian universities are extremely bad. He crucified the lecturers for the poor quality of graduates. But go through some of these hard facts and know where to advocate for good education in Nigerian universities. Some of the simple reasons why Nigerian universities produce poorly trained graduates are:

There are 77,511 full-time non-teaching (Supporting staff) in Nigeria’s public universities and only 37,504 academic staff. The none academic staff are 2 Times number of academic staff.

Out of a total of 37,504 lecturers in Nigerian universities, only 28,128 (75%) are engaged on full-time basis while 9,376 (25% mostly the senior and experienced staff) are recycled as Visiting, Adjunct, Sabbatical and Contract lecturers. No is depreciating everyday because we are setting up new universities and springing new programs using the same academic staff

Nigerian Universities Instead of having minimum of 80% Academic staff having PhDs, only about 43% have a PhD. The remaining 57% have no PhDs. Making 90% of Nigerian Universities to be bottom-heavy (with junior lecturers forming large chunk of the workforce).

Universities are supposed to be international communities attracting staff across the world but Nigerian universities have only 2% expatriate lecturers. Worst still 89% of staff in our universities are from the hosting or neighbouring states. Making our universities closed local communities, with homogeneous staff having the same ethno-cultural background.

Recommended staff to students ratio is 1:15 but Nigeria has an average of 1:103 in the public universities. National Open University of Nigeria 1:363 University of Abuja 1:122 Lagos State University 1:111.
Compare the above with Harvard 1:4; MIT 1:9; Yale 1:4, Cambridge 1:3; NUS 1:12; KFUPM 1:9; Technion 1:15.

Universities spend millions to erect super-gates, spend hundreds of millions in wall fencing and in-fencing, expend millions to purchase exotic vehicles but no basic classroom furnishings, laboratories, libraries, students accommodation and academic staff

Over 1,000 students are packed in lecture halls meant for less than 600 students and over 100 students being packed in laboratory meant for 20 students. No conveniences!

76% of students in Nigerian universities use well as source of water, 42% use pit latrine, 67% of students use bush as toilet especially those staying off campus.

83% of the lecturers in Nigerian universities are male while 17% are female.

700 EX-MILLITANTS in Nigeria are receiving more funds annually than 5 Nigerian universities.

Nigerian Universities Library resources are inadequate, outdated and manually operated. Student to book ratio is one of the worst in the world.

Judge and tell me who to blame.
Education is one of the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) but how prepared is Nigeria to be part of the 21st century economy?

*Kenyan Presidential Elections and Seven Lessons for Nigeria*

Deputy President, William Ruto has won the Kenyan Presidential Election with over 50% votes despite falling out with incumbent President, Uhuru Kenyatta who decided to back his longtime rival, Raila Odinga to spite Mr. Ruto.

The electoral outcome has some lessons for Nigeria. We shall summarize sieven of them below:

*Lesson 1*: Having influential Godfathers with power of incumbency can no longer guarantee electoral success. Raila Odinga lost the election.

*Lesson 2*: Political alliances of old foes are now viewed with suspicion by today's electorates in Africa unlike what obtained in the past. Odinga was a bitter rib and critic of President Kenyatta. People saw them in their new alliance as strange bed fellows.

*Lesson 3*: Money politics and corruption have ruled Kenyan politics over the years. However, abject poverty, high youth unemployment, untold hardship and unfulfilled promises have woken the masses from political slumber to reject money and vote wisely.

*Lesson 4*: The Social Media was very powerful in swinging the victory to the side of Mr. Ruto. Those who still underrate the power of Social Media in modern African politics should have a rethink.

*Lesson 5*: Age has become a key factor in African politics. Voters are now rejecting old, recycled candidates in preference for youthfulness. At 55, Ruto was the youngest of the 4 major contestants. He defeated the older and much experienced Raila Odinga who is 77 and a former Prime Minister. The other two major candidates are also in their 60s.

*Lesson 6*: Contesting several times does not guarantee victory for a candidate in future election. Raila Odinga contested 5 times (between 1997 to 2022) and lost all. He lost to Kibaki, Kenyatta and now Ruto. A lesson to the entitled recycled generation of Nigerian political class.

*Lesson 7* Ethnicity is becoming a secondary consideration in Sub-Saharan African politics. Kenyatta is from the dominant tribe, Kikuyu. He played the ethnic card to try and secure victory for Odinga who is a Luo but the people are more interested in honesty and competence than tribal considerations.

We hope the Nigerian electorates will be wiser as the country gets set for the all-important 2023 Presidential Elections where the stakes currently are manipulated by ethnic, sectarian and religious sentiments instead of national interests.

FEDERAL EXECUTIVE COUNCIL SCRAPS AWARD OF HND BY POLYTECHNICS - APPROVES COMPREHENSIVE REFORMS IN NIGERIA'S TERTIARY EDUCATION SYSTEM

To this effect, the award of the HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes.

Also, all the programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent,
will be scrapped.

Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those
universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils.

The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded
the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university.

To kick-start the new policy, the nation's two most prominent polytechnics - Yaba College of Technology and Kaduna Polytechnic -
will henceforth be known as City University of Technology, Yaba and City University of Technology, Kaduna.

And to give legal teeth to these approvals, the FEC approved the submission of two Executive bills to the National Assembly for enactment into law.

With education being on the concurrent list, the states may wish to consolidate their tertiary institutions. But if they do not wish to follow the federal example, their programmes will continue to be regulated by the relevant agencies of the Federal Ministry of Education.

The first bill will concretise the setting up of the two city universities while the second will approve the preparation and consolidation
of all federal polytechnics and colleges of education as campuses of proximate universities.

The Ministry of Justice will do the preparation and submission of the two bills to the National Assembly.

Minister of Education, Mall. Adamu, told journalists after the weekly meeting of the council that under the reform measures, her ministry would, however, continue to licence private polytechnics and colleges of education for the award of qualification at ND and National Certificate in Education (NCE) levels.
She said: "There will be no more award of HND.

After we have exhausted the current students under the programme, there will be no more award of HND. This means that there will be no fresh admission for HND programmes. And in addition, any programme that is not technical will be out of the polytechnics. About 70 per cent of polytechnic graduates are in the non-technical courses. It is going to be a rigorous implementation programme."

A ministerial committee to ensure the smooth implementation of all that is required for the take-off of the reform initiatives is to begin work immediately.

Mall. Adamu said: "The HND certificate will remain a legal tender in Nigeria and holders of such certificate will continue to be recognised as the equivalent of first degree holders without discriminatory remunerations and limit to progression in the work place.

The NCE certificate will be retained as the minimum teaching qualification at the basic level of education. Any higher qualifications by
these private or state-owned polytechnics will be only affiliation with a university. So, HND is no longer in existence, but existing HND will be respected and considered legal tender."

The council also approved the Federal Government's formal take-over of the Waziri Umaru Polytechnic, Birnin Kebbi, which will be the College of Technology campus of the Othman Dan Fodio University, Sokoto, as well as the Hussein Adamu Polytechnic, Kazaure,
Bauchi, which will be a College of Technology of the proximate university in the state.

Also, the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, Owerri, Imo State, has been taken over as a campus of the Federal University of
Technology, Owerri.

A state that had never had any federal institution, like Bayelsa, is to have a College of Technology as a campus of the College of Technology of the University of Port Harcourt.

FG REJECTS BRIGGS COMMITTEES SUBMITTED REPORTS🔥🔥

Briggs Report gives teaching staff 180% pay increase, while non teaching staff 10%,ASUU in collaboration with the Committee excluded the relevant advisory Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs that were key to the negotiation----FG

INDICATION emerged on Thursday that the Federal Government may have rejected the Nimi-Briggs Committee ovon the alleged allocation of pay rise of 180 percent to university teaching staff, while the non teaching staff were given 10 percent.

The Federal Government had set up the Briggs-led committee to renegotiate the 2009 Agreement between the government and the university based unions, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions, NASU and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT.

But sources at the Ministry of Finance accused the Briggs Committee of connivance with ASUU in proposing an impracticable increase in the university wage structure where a Professor is to earn N2 million a month.

The sources close to the Presidential Committee on Salaries and Wages alleged that though Prof. Briggs is the Pro-chancellor of the Federal University, Lokoja, he still teaches at the University of Port Harcourt hence the alleged conspiracy to make a pay rise of about 180 percent for teaching staff, while the non teaching staff was given a paltry pay rise.

Besides, the source claimed that ASUU in collaboration with the Committee excluded the relevant advisory Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs that were key to the negotiation.

The relevant MDA’s that were excluded according to multiple sources are the Ministries of Finance, Education, Labour and Employment, Budget Office of the Federation, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission from the sittings of the committee.

According to the sources, “These are critical MDAs that manage the finances of the Federal Government, its receipts and expenditures as well as administer the public service of the federation.

“Their exclusion from the sittings of Prof. Nimi Briggs easily explains its non-inclusive and one-sided proposal, recommending sky-high, impracticable figures in salaries and allowances that are clearly beyond the capacity of the Federal Government.

“How can you discuss the service condition of a section of the public service of the federation without the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation or salaries and wage structure without contributions from the Minister of finance, Budget Office or National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission?

“To the exclusion of the Presidential Committee on Salaries? This is an anomaly. And how could the Briggs Committee skate over such a grave issue,” the source asked.

According to findings by our reporter, Briggs Committee proposed a professor to earn N19.5 million per annum and when other allowances are added, will scale up to N23 million per annum, making it about N2 million monthly.

The allowances include post-graduate supervision allowance, Teaching Allowance, Field trip allowance, responsibility and Post graduate supervision allowance, Hazard allowance, examination/time keeper allowance, teaching practice/industrial supervision allowance. Others include honoraria for post graduate thesis(oral exam) honoraria for external modulation programme for undergraduate/ post graduate students, allowance for external assessment of readers/professors as well as allowance for the post graduate study grant, besides other fringe benefits.

One of the sources said that the government side – the Presidential Committee on Salaries has taken a decision for a holistic, all-encompassing and integrated review of the salaries and allowances of the entire educational sector – universities, polytechnics and colleges of education. Hence, the Committee has been mandated to go back to the drawing board to produce a reasonable, practicable wage increase, which will reflect relativity of every worker in the educational sector – academic and non- academic.

This the source explained was to avoid a situation where government will solve a problem from one section of the education system and inadvertently opens conflagration from a different flank.

It said that this is because the request for the increase of salaries of polytechnics staff as well as that of health workers- doctors and JOHESU members is still waiting for the response of the Federal Government.

Another source told our correspondent that Government is amenable to a general wage review and intends to achieve it in a manner the promotes the best interest and overall progress of all sectors of the nation’s workforce.

It however regretted that while doctors and Joint Health workers as well as staff of polytechnics, whose requests for wage increase is pending before government have shown patriotism, choosing to stay at work while pressing home their demand, ASUU wants N1.1 trillion yearly for the university system alone or keep the universities shut.

According to the source, the Minister of Finance has explained that paying this amount is not doable, even if the Federal Government decides to collapse a big chunk of its capital vote.

Urging ASUU to return to work while the Federal Government sorts this tricky wage increase in manner that does not unsettle relativity and general wage equilibrium in the federal public service, having in mind also, the finances of the nation, it lamented that incessant strike by ASUU is at the root of the decay and consequent de-marketing of the nation’s universities.

The source said, “ASUU made the Committee work without government officials from the Ministry of Finance, Budget Office of the Federation, National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and Ministry of Labour and Employment.

“These government organs are to provide advice to the committee while the Ministry of Education and the National University Commission are the direct employers.

“The Ministry of Finance and the Budget Office of the Federation are supposed to advise the committee on financial and fiscal solutions for revenue of the agreement in order to know the quantum of pay rise.

“While the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission will work out the template for salaries and allowance increase in order that relability will be maintained between lecturers and other staff members, this was not done because they drove those officials away including the Ministry of Labour that will advise and the Office of the Head of Service.”

The source further said, “Briggs who is a serving Professor even though he is a Pro-Chancellor of a University with ASUU fixed humongous salary of about 180 percent rise to ASUU members and gave 10 percent to SSANU, NASU and NAAT.

One of the sources accused ASUU of using threat to achive whatever benefits it wants.

“ASUU is threatening the Minister of Communications and Digital Evonomy with revocation of his professorship, the Director General of NITDA is being threatened for revocation of his Bachelor’s degree.

“Going by what ASUU and the Briggs Committee did, it will fix the salary of a Professor to N20 million annually and if you add the allowances, it will land them N2 million per month, some senior lecturers will collect N1.5 million per month, while other senior non teaching staff will get about N500 thousand. The Vice Chancellors who are professors will get N1.1 million which is far below a Professor that is teaching. These are the complications.”

Recall that the Nimi-Briggs Report was submitted one month ago and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education was said to have passed it on.

: Enough Is Enough, Buhari Tells ASUU

President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in Daura, Katsina State revisited the issue of the prolonged strike which has left students at home for months, telling leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) that enough is enough.

The president called on ASUU to reconsider their position on the continued strike, expressing worry that the hiatus will have generational consequences on families, the educational system and future development of the country.

The President, who stated this when he received some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC), legislators and political leaders at his residence, said the strike had already taken a toll on the psychology of parents, students and other stakeholders, throwing up many moral issues that already beg for
attention.

President Buhari noted that the future of the country rests on the quality of educational institutions and education, while assuring that the government understands their position, and negotiations should continue, with students in lecture halls.

“We hope that ASUU will sympathise with the people on the prolonged strike. Truly, enough is enough for keeping students at home. Don’t hurt the next generation for goodness sake,” he said.

The president called on all well meaning Nigerians, particularly those close to the leaders and members of the association, to intervene in persuading the lecturers to reconsider their position, and the ripple effect on an entire generation and the nation.

President Buhari said students from Nigerian universities will be faced with the challenge of competing with others in a highly connected and technology-driven work space, and keeping them at home only deprives them of time, skill and opportunities to be relevant on the global stage.

THE COURT OF APPEAL, JOS JUDICIAL DIVISION SACK BITRUS ZULFA RIMVEN AS CHAIRMAN, LANGTANG NORTH L.G.C

The Court of Appeal sitting in Jos has, this day 1st July, 2022, sacked Bitrus Zulfa Rimven as Chairman, Langtang North L.G.C.

You will recall that following the judgement of the Plateau State High Court of Justice sitting in Langtang on the 13th day of December, 2021 in Suit No. PLD/L7CV/2021 which was instituted by Hon. Nankar Napoleon Shagaya against the APC, Zulfa and PLASIEC, in which the High Court nullified the candidature of Bitrus Zulfa Rimven and pronounced that he was never elected as Chairman of Langtang North L.G.C, Zulfa had filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal challenging the propriety of the judgement of the High Court.

In a considered judgement delivered for about 4 hours today, the three justices of the Court of Appeal unanimously (meaning all the three justices were in agreement) dismissed the appeal filed by Zulfa for lacking in merit.

The Court while dismissing the Appellant's appeal commended the erudite judgement delivered by the Honourable Justice N.K Sasheet of the High Court of Justice of Plateau State sitting in Langtang and reasoned that the soundness of the judgment could not be assailed and therefore cannot be tampered with by the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal re-iterated the orders of the High Court which include, among others, the nullification of the candidacy of Bitrus Zulfa Rimven and the order to the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) to withdraw the purported Certificate of Return it issued to Zulfa as the winner of the chairmanship election for Langtang North.

Further more, their Lordships in their wisdom awarded a cost of 250, 000 Naira against Zulfa and in favour of Hon. Nankar Napoleon Shagaya to mitigate the financial burden the latter has been made to go through as a result of the unmeritorious appeal filed by Zulfa.

While we congratulate the judiciary for stepping in to salvage our democracy once again, may we salute the courage of Hon. Nankar Shagaya for approaching the court to assert his right as well as standing tall throughout the period of the struggle for justice.

May we also salute the Tarok electorates who have never hidden their love and support for this legal venture; your prayers and well wishes in various respects have kept us going. We can't thank you enough!

To the slaves of impunity, we say to you that no matter how long a night may seem to last, daybreak must come. The end is in sight and, as you will have witnessed in the political landscape, your impunity has boomeranged as you have completely lost the political grip you had erroneously thought such dastardly act would deliver to you guys.

As a legal team, we hereby applaud Hon. Nankar Shagaya for trusting us with a sensitive case of this nature which we have delivered with such aplomb to glory of the Almighty God. For L.T Dangle Esq., N.A Dashe Esq., and a host of others who have contributed in one way or the other throughout this legal battle, I salute you. At least, we shall stand to be counted among the few honorouble men who refused to be browbeaten into hobnobbing with impunity by the so- called high and mighty. Well, I say no more!

We were in this for service and the attainment of Justice, and not for any pecuniary benefits, and so shall we remain! We are equally resolutely determined to continue to employ the instrumentality of the law even beyond May 29, 2023 to hold to account any illegal occupant of public office and we shall see to it that all financial benefits that will have accrued to any such person are returned to the public coffers.

It was Alexander the Great who once said: "There is nothing impossible to he that will try."

Thank you all!
Signed:
Prince Singa Edward Zhattau,
Lead Counsel to Hon. Nankar Shagaya

Platitude and theory not always the solution.

There is too much evil and suffering in the world and that cannot be explained by theory and platitudes from philosophers and writers.

Our world is doomed to find meaning in a meaningless world, struggling to escape distrust and nihilistic sense that impede our day to day existence which is marked no exit(not ending).

Existential challenge.

Someone once said, "there is too much evil in the world there cannot be a God!" Evil, they said, is the deviation or departure from the way things ought to be.

Question: if everything originate from God what is the source of evil?

Answer: The greatest gift God gave to us was in the freedom for self determination, to either trust God for right and wrong through making our own distinctions.
The redefining of evil and good by man is the instrumental source of evil👌

But when one said such a thing is good he is at the same time assuming such a thing is evil.
If there is no good there is no evil. Its the two side of a coin.

We can't be good without God someone might say. Can that be true? Answer it in the comment box👇👇

We fallaciously, are led to believe that the economic meltdown we suffer today are as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 🤔🤔
Price of commodities in the market is sky high, inflation everywhere, killings and destruction of life and properties everywhere this truly will tempt the simple, to confess the absence of a God. But nay! Heinous evil is unexplainable to the skeptics, but to the man of Faith there is God which I myself affirmed.

Alot of unprovoked religious wars and killings that people in the name of God are perpetrating is also much of evil😥😥

Run to God instead and you will find truth in him and peace internal👌

2023 - Plateau PDP guber candidate picks Ex- council chairlady Mrs Piyo as running mate

Gubernatorial candidate of the People's Democratic Party, PDP in Plateau state, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang has picked Mrs Josephine Piyo as his running mate ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Piyo was unveiled at a brief ceremony held at the State PDP office in Jos on Tuesday.

Mrs Piyo, a grassroots politician is a former Chairperson of Riyom local government area of the State as well as a former lawmaker in the state house of assembly.

Barr. Mutfwang said the choice of Piyo is about giving a voice to the voiceless.

He said that "...It is pertinent to mention that since my election, I have taken the responsibility of providing leadership seriously. I have begun by talking with and where possible visiting my fellow contestants. I am very grateful for their sportsmanship and solidarity thus far. The discharge Permit to place on record the unflinching support I have enjoyed from the leadership of our Party across the state, elders, stakeholders, and supporters since I emerged as our Gubernatorial Candidate.

"Today is a day of history. I must begin to demonstrate my capacity for leadership by taking a very tough decision - the choice of a Deputy Governorship candidate for our great party. Fortunately for me, I have an array of qualified men and women to choose from. Ironically it is a difficult one since it can only be one person! In making this decision, I have made far-reaching consultations with leaders of our Party, Stakeholders, and various caucuses before choosing my Running Mate to enhance the joint ticket going into the general elections.

"Some of you will recall that in the course of my campaigns before the party primaries, I committed to giving a voice to the voiceless. I make bold to say that a critical segment of our society that is often neglected in leadership considerations is the women folk and yet they form a formidable percentage of our population. For me giving them a voice is a compelling necessity. I, therefore, have the honour and privilege of introducing to our party members and Plateau people a respected Plateau woman, mother, grandmother, daughter of Barkin Ladi, and wife of the people of Riyom.

"She trained as a healthcare worker and served as a public administrator before becoming a consummate politician. Ladies and gentlemen behold the Honourable Mrs. Josephine Chundung Piyo, as my Running Mate."

Mutfwang further described Mrs. Piyo as "a grassroots and cosmopolitan politician, a loyal party woman, brings along with her a wealth of experience, having served our great State dutifully and diligently as a Nurse, Teacher before venturing into politics when she got elected into the Plateau State House of Assembly in 1999.

She thereafter served as a Special Adviser to the Executive Governor, of Plateau State from 2008 to 2011. She would later go on to get elected as the Chairperson of Riyom LGC from 2014 to 2015."

He appealed to "every true party man and woman of good conscience to join hands with us in this great task of winning the 2023 elections to enable our party the PDP bring succour to the good people of Plateau State," stressing "Our doors remain open for advice and consultations as we stay united."

Our correspondent reports that Mrs Piyo who accepted the position expressed her gratitude and assured of working to give the Party victory.

She promised women and youths that she would do her best to give them a voice if elected.
