: ASUP Strike May Not End In 2022 – ASUP President Declares

The National President of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Anderson Ezeibe, has declared that, the ongoing strike would linger till next year if the Federal government fails to meet its demands.

Ezeibe disclosed this on Tuesday while addressing members of the union at a meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Ogun state.

Decrying over the poor response from the Nigerian government on so many issues being raised by the union in the time past, he urged his members to be prepare to embark on more strike actions immediately after the current two weeks warning strikes.

Parts of his statements reads:

“Our members should be prepared for more strikes, this is just a two weeks definite strike.”
“The strike is not ending after two weeks, that is the point and the strike may not even end this year.”
The ASUP President hinted that if by June when the NEC of the union would be meeting and the Federal government has not meet its demands, the union may call for an indefinite strike action.

No Resumption until FG pays withheld salaries - ASUU

The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday said it would not end the strike it embarked on until government paid all the salaries of its members it withheld.

The President of ASUU, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, in a telephone interview with our correspondent in Lagos, said government should not expect the lecturers to resume without paying the withheld salaries.

Recall that there were reports on November 27 that the union had agreed to end its strike following the Federal Government ’ s promise to release N 70 bn to ASUU as earned allowance.

But Ogunyemi on Sunday explained that the members were still consulting and at the same time waiting for the government to fulfil its promise of releasing members’ withheld salaries .

“ We are still consulting ; we have not finished consultation, by the end of this week we shall make our report public. There are promises government made with dates.
Government promised to release salaries of our members.

The withheld salaries have not been paid and we need to have information on that . Government should not expect us to resume without releasing our salaries. ”

He emphasised that once the timeline expired this week without the salaries being paid, the union would take a final decision.

Ogunyemi also said that he could not determine when ASUU would suspend the strike .

“ I can’t vouch for anything about resumption, but my members will determine that. The only thing I know is that payment of withheld salaries can smoothen the process and that is what we have told the government. It will aid the final decision.

“ The government gave a timeline and we are monitoring , once the timeline expires this week , our members will take a final decision. If they pay the withheld salaries , it will make the process easier to handle. ”

He noted that the new set of students were already waiting to be admitted, adding that when school resumed it would be difficult to manage the situation

We'll Explore Other Options If ASUU Remains Adamant, Says Federal Government

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, has expressed optimism that the prolonged strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities will be resolved by next week when the Federal Government team meets the union leaders again.

He, however, said if the matter was not resolved by then, he would explore the provisions in the labour law and other channels.

Government had previously appealed to the union to call off the strike.

The union had on March 24 2020 embarked on an indefinite strike over the failure of the Federal Government to keep to the 2019 Memorandum of Action between them as well as the lingering disagreement over the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System that ASUU rejected.

Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Friday, the minister said the government had met six of the union’s nine demands and that they would meet again next week with the hope of ending the prolonged strike.

He stated, “Even if countries go to war, at the end of the day they come to the negotiation table. I’m inviting them (ASUU) next week. We are doing side meetings on our part and we are collating everything. I’m collating responses from the Accountant General of the Federation’s Office and everybody who has something to do with this matter.

When asked if it meant that the lecturers may not return to the classrooms in the next one or two weeks, he said, “I’m not looking at that (long) period. I’m an optimist on this matter. By next week, we will conclude this matter. There are so many options left. We have the labour laws and I have options left to me in the labour laws. I have other channels.”

The minister, who said his children had also been at home as a result of the strike, explained that government had agreed to give the University Transparency Academic Solution, the payment platform proposed by ASUU, a trial. He however said the feedback he got from the National Information Technology Development Agency, the agency mandated to follow-up the trial with ASUU, showed they had just concluded the first phase and that the second phase to assess the functional requirement of UTAS had not been done.
