*Obaseki on gender bills: N’assembly missed chance to redesign political landscape — it’s painful*

Godwin Obaseki, governor of Edo, says the national assembly missed a “golden opportunity” to redesign the country’s political landscape when it rejected five bills seeking to include women in politics and governance.

On Wednesday, both chambers of the national assembly voted on bills seeking to amend the constitution.

None of the gender bills were successful during the process.

In a statement, Obaseki described the action of the national assembly as “painful and unconscionable”.

“The recent developments at the national assembly, in which five bills seeking affirmative action and inclusion for women were vehemently shut down by members, is most regrettably and unsettling,” the governor said.

“This is because the legislature is the bastion of democracy and a critical platform for fair representation and inclusion in government.

“It is therefore painful and unconscionable that these bills which provide a fillip for accommodating women who make up about 50 percent of the voting population, are subjected to such a sorry fate.

“It is heartbreaking that the national assembly members missed a golden opportunity to redesign Nigeria’s political landscape by enshrining landmark legislation that promotes inclusion and provides women with the legal backing to gain equitable representation at the apex level of lawmaking and political participation.”

The governor asked the national assembly to provide opportunities for women to able to participate in politics and governance.

*Obaseki harps on transparency, accountability in public procurement amid dwindling resources*

*_…to partner UNDP to create more jobs for Edo youths_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called for transparency and accountability in the use of public resources amid the decline in government revenue.

Obaseki gave the charge when he received a delegation of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Accountability Lab and Open Contracting Partnership, at the Government House, in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

He said: "We are not a very rich state and it's important that the little we have is expended in such a way that it gives us much opportunity to work for our people.

"Transparency and accountability are key and core to our administration. Fiscal transparency is critical especially as we face declining federal receipts. It is important that we show to our people how we have spent the money we got from them. It is after this that we are justified to ask for more taxes that could lead to an increase in revenue.”

The governor continued: "As an administration, we are moving the whole of our governance architecture onto an e-governance platform, utilizing technology to enhance and enforce the e-governance process. We are open and will continue to explain to our people through Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Civil Society Organisation (CSOs) our open and transparent policies and programmes. We always carry our people along, as they are our priority.”

Calling on the support of the UNDP in creating more employment opportunities in the state, Obaseki noted: "Following the great work done by Edojobs, we have continued to receive more data on the number of applicants. We need to domesticate the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programmes (NJFP) and need the help of UNDP.

"We have done the enumeration of businesses locally and have the data of our local businesses. We have data already and want to see how to domesticate the Nigeria Jubilee Fellows Programme where we can get more allocation available to us.”

Earlier, the Senior Advisor, Programme Manager, UNDP, William Tauma commended the governor for his efforts at youth empowerment and capacity building.

*2023: Detractors working to derail govt, cause strife for selfish gains - Obaseki*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has warned political detractors spreading lies and falsehood in the state with the intention of causing crisis and havoc ahead of the 2023 elections, to steer clear of the state.

The governor, who spoke to journalists in Benin City, urged citizens to be wary of the antics of some selfish politicians hell-bent on stirring chaos in the state to achieve their personal interests as the country approaches another election season.

Obaseki noted that the detractors are envious of the successes and progress made by his administration and are working hard to ensure that the government fails.

Noting that his government remains committed to delivering the dividends of democracy to the people of the state, the governor called for the support and prayers of all citizens towards the realization of the government’s Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) Agenda.

According to him, “The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) should pray for our administration as some people are envious of the successes and progress made so far, and are working hard to ensure we fail. They propagate lies, saying the State is not peaceful, Christmas was not peaceful and no unity in Edo State.

"They have planned to continue to create more havoc because it is an election year, but we are not afraid because God is with us as we continue to build and develop Edo State.”

Reassuring that his administration will continue to pursue programmes and projects aimed at ensuring economic prosperity for the state and improving the livelihoods of the people, Obaseki continued: “We are rehabilitating and constructing roads and street lights, building infrastructure and developing the economy of Edo State. We are ready to do more for the people of Edo State as my emphasis this year is on the people.

“We want to partner with you, the PFN, because you are closer to the people and interact with them daily. We want to collaborate with you to be able to deliver the dividends of democracy to Edo people.”

“We will also partner with you to bring healthcare closer to the people through Edo-HIP, ensuring affordable healthcare to Edo people,” he reassured.

*Benin residents commend Obaseki on street-lighting initiative, as nightlife, economic activities get boost*

Residents of Benin metropolis have hailed the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on the ongoing street-lighting project across the metropolis, which is boosting economic activities and nightlife.

The street-lighting initiative of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration was conceived to provide illumination at night and boost economic activity through a power purchase agreement with Ossiomo Power, a Public Private Partnership (PPP) that now generates 95MW of power at its power station in Ologbo, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State.

The firm provides 24/7 electricity to the Benin Industrial Park and powers streetlights across Benin metropolis, as well as public establishments, including the State Secretariat, Government House, Edo Specialist Hospital, Stella Obasanjo Hospital, among others.

The streetlights are currently active on Sapele Road, Airport Road, Kings Square, Akenzua Road, Oba Market, among others.

A cross-section of the residents, who spoke with journalists at the weekend, hailed the governor for achieving the milestone through an innovative power purchase agreement, which has saved taxpayers the burden of paying for the service through diesel-powered generators, which is less cost-effective.

Mr. Dennis Osaigbovo, who resides in the Akenzua Road, expressed appreciation to the governor for the initiative, noting that Akenzua, Stadium Road and environs now wear a new look at night.

“We are indeed happy with the street-lighting initiative. It was announced that the governor was going to embark on the exercise, but we didn't anticipate that it was going to be executed in this sort of fashion. This is obviously a product of deep thinking.”

A business owner on the Airport Road axis, Mr. Emmanuel Akpan, said that the initiative has revived night-life in the area as a lot of people are now more comfortable to do business late into the night without fear.

“It is a laudable initiative. We are very happy and grateful for the well thought-out initiative, providing streetlights without having to worry that the government is burning money on diesel.”

*Obaseki congratulates Prof. Salami on appointment as Chief Economic Adviser*

*_… urges alignment of monetary, fiscal policies_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has congratulated Prof. Doyin Salami on his appointment as the Chief Economic Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The governor, in a statement, said: “I hope that Prof. Salami will justify the trust and confidence of Mr President and help to align the nation’s monetary and fiscal policies to enable inclusive growth in these very challenging economic times.”

He added: “With this new role, I urge Prof. Salami to provide direction in influencing the fundamentals of the Nigerian economy, which will help to steer the economy back on track.

“Prof. Salami’s credentials will boost investor confidence for many who have sought a more coordinated and predictable economic environment that can spur Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and portfolio investment into the economy.

“As the current chairman of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC) and member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria, I expect Prof. Salami to bring his experience to bear in the new assignment and place Nigeria on the path of economic prosperity.”

Press Statement

*Edo APC, jobless, fabricating reports of invasion to cause panic, should be ignored*

The attention of the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) has been drawn to a vile, malicious, fictitious and ill-fated report purporting that a community in Ovia North East Local Government of the state has been invaded and seized by marauding bandits with the intention of terrorizing the community and its neighbours.

Checks by Edo PDP at the said community and engagement with the Nigeria Police Force and local sources have revealed that the story was fabricated by the opposition and detractors of the state government with the intention to cause panic among Edo citizens.

It must be put on record that the opposition in Edo State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and their minions have resorted to their familiar antic of stage-managing the orchestration of chaos where there is none in order to drive alternative facts, propaganda and falsehoods, so as to put the people of the state on the edge.

There is no denying that the latest attempt is as a result of the accolades heaped by citizens and visitors to the state on the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, his administration and security agencies in the state for a peaceful yuletide celebration, during which no violent crime was recorded, even as the state witnessed unprecedented activity in the entertainment, hospitality and creative sectors.

The opposition is uncomfortable that despite their false alarm and a dimwitted call for a state of emergency, the state is manifestly peaceful and Edo people have come out to acknowledge this obvious fact as a part of their lived reality.

The APC and their agents should be made aware that it is a crime to stir up a crisis with false alarms and fake news as is contained in the extant laws of the land.

The public is advised to ignore their false alarms and ill-fated propaganda as it is only aimed to drive selfish interest in stirring up a crisis where there is none.

Security agencies in the state have been put on the alert and will not fail to bring those found to be fermenting crises in the state to justice.

We hereby urge Edo people to go about their businesses with the assurance that the Governor Obaseki-led government will continue to provide the needed support for the state vigilante network, security agencies and other institutions to deliver their statutory role of ensuring the safety of lives and property in the state.

Signed

*Obaseki: Edo to drive devt, growth with technology, innovation, human capacity, others in 2022*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said his government will, in the New Year, drive sustainable growth and development by placing emphasis on building the state’s rich human capacity, deploying technology, promoting innovation, enhancing growth of the productive sector and leveraging the state’s Diaspora population.

The governor in his New Year message, promised to sustain ongoing reforms in the state’s healthcare and education system, civil service, security architecture, agricultural sector, as well as other infrastructural projects, among others, aimed at improving the lives of the people and achieving economic prosperity for the state.

Obaseki reassured that the government will continue to deepen development strides across all sectors of the state following the gains made in the last five years, reassuring that the government will, in the incoming year, place emphasis on building capacity, deploying technology, promoting innovation, enhancing growth of the productive sector and leveraging the state’s Diaspora population to drive sustainable development.

Felicitating with citizens on the New Year, the governor noted that in spite of the challenges and uncertainties experienced in 2021, there is a lot to be grateful to God Almighty for.

According to him, “Despite witnessing two waves of COVID-19 in 2021, the mortality rate which we recorded in Edo State was far less than was projected.

“This persisting COVID pandemic is a clarion call for us to pay more attention to our environment and also strengthen our healthcare system. Consequently, the reform of our healthcare system is now a very high priority in our ongoing transformation of the entire governance structure of Edo State.

“Confident that Edo citizens will continue to subscribe to the Edo Health Insurance Scheme which will provide the long-term funds to sustain our new healthcare system, we are now revamping 100 additional primary healthcare facilities while building our network of specialist hospitals in the three senatorial districts. Our healthcare reform in Edo will also include encouragement of the private sector to invest in providing quality healthcare.”

“We are encouraged with the progress in our transformation of the public service and we are confident that with the ongoing recruitments, introduction of technology and the emphasis on training, our citizens will begin to receive better quality services from their government,” Obaseki noted.

Reassuring on more infrastructural development across Edo communities in 2022, the governor said: “The construction and rehabilitation of roads are currently going on across the state. Even though the extended rainy season delayed the commencement of work, we are optimistic that significant portions of work will be completed before the next rainy season. We are also focusing on other infrastructure such as electricity and fibre connection. Our operation Light Up Edo is in full gear with the streetlighting project being rolled out in Benin City, Ekpoma and Auchi.”

On plans for human capacity in the New Year, Obaseki continued: “Investing in our people will continue to be a priority in 2022 as we rollout the EdoBEST framework to all tiers of education in the state. We are building shared production facilities in 6 technical colleges across the state to support the technical training of our youths while promoting technical entrepreneurship in these communities.

“The successful take-off of the Edo Tech Park with the graduation of the first set of highly-trained software engineers and developers has spurred us to commence the construction of the permanent site for the Edo Tech Park. We hope the first phase will be ready for use in 2022, thus ensuring Edo’s position as a tech hub on the African continent.

“In addition to exposing them to technology, we are supporting our youths in entrepreneurship and innovation to seize the moment and build top-of-the-range capacity to compete with their peers globally.

“We are expending resources to boost opportunities in the creative industry with the establishment of the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and Soundstage.

“As a government, we will continue to deepen our development strides following from the gains made in the last five years. Our emphasis will continue to remain on building capacity, deploying technology, promoting innovation, enhancing growth of the productive sector and leveraging our Diaspora population to drive sustainable development,” he reassured.

The governor further stated: “In the New Year, we are recommitting ourselves to deepen growth across all sectors of the state and provide more opportunities for our people to realise their full potential. These we will do by leveraging the innate abilities of our people and providing them with the tools and enablement to dominate and conquer the world.

*2022 NEW YEAR ADDRESS BY GOVERNOR GODWIN OBASEKI*

As we usher in 2022, let us thank God Almighty that we are able to witness the beginning of another year.

In spite of the challenges and uncertainties experienced in 2021, there is a lot which we should be grateful to God Almighty for.

Despite witnessing two waves of COVID-19 in 2021, the mortality rate which we recorded in Edo State was far less than was projected.

We are also focusing on other infrastructure such as electricity and fibre connection. Our operation Light Up Edo is in full gear with the streetlighting project being rolled out in Benin City, Ekpoma and Auchi.

We are working with a private provider to connect all our 18 local government areas with fibre optic connection to enhance access to the internet and expand the digital economy across the state.

The physical and digital infrastructure we are laying across the state, including the proposed Airport in Edo North, will position Edo State as a major commercial hub in Nigeria and West Africa.

Investing in our people will continue to be a priority in 2022 as we rollout the EdoBEST framework to all tiers of education in the state. We are building shared production facilities in 6 technical colleges across the state to support the technical training of our youths while promoting technical entrepreneurship in these communities.

In the new year, we are recommitting ourselves to deepen growth across all sectors of the state and providing more opportunity for our people to realise their full potential. These we will do by leveraging the innate abilities of our people and providing them with the tools and enablement to dominate and conquer the world.

Let me appreciate and commend the effort and services of all our security agencies particularly our vigilante network who continue to work and sacrifice to keep us safe.

Our relative success in securing Edo particularly in the last few months is the result of the collaborative effort of these agencies. Our support will be extended in the new year to training of our vigilante network in the Nigeria Police Force training facilities in Ogida Barracks which has been refurbished by the Edo State Government.

In the areas of agriculture, tourism, infrastructure, energy, electricity, healthcare, education and security, we are changing the way government works and delivers services to Edo people.

As we fulfil this mandate to you, we urge you all to live up to your own civic responsibility by paying your taxes. We are revamping our tax administration system to make it easy for you to pay your taxes with the use of technology.

We urge all Edo people to approach the new year with renewed hope in our political system. Our goal is to make sure that in Edo, democracy has full expression and we only vote for candidates with demonstrated evidence to add value to our society.

I reassure the good people of Edo State that I will continue to strive to do only that which is in the best interest of Edo State and Edo people.

I wish you all a happy and safe 2022.

We are building shared production facilities in 6 technical colleges across the state to support the technical training of our youths while promoting technical entrepreneurship in these communities.

The successful take-off of the Edo Tech Park with the graduation of the first set of highly-trained software engineers and developers has spurred us to commence the construction of the permanent site for the Edo Tech Park. We hope the first phase will be ready for use in 2022, thus ensuring Edo’s position as a tech hub on the African continent.

In addition to exposing them to technology, we are supporting our youths in entrepreneurship and innovation to seize the moment and build top-of-the-range capacity to compete with their peers globally.

We are expending resources to boost opportunities in the creative industry with the establishment of the Victor Uwaifo Creative Hub and Soundstage.

As a government, we will continue to deepen our development strides following from the gains made in the last five years. Our emphasis will continue to remain on building capacity, deploying technology, promoting innovation, enhancing growth of the productive sector and leveraging our Diaspora population to drive sustainable development.
