A COMMUNIQUÉ OF THE COALITION OF NIGERIAN STUDENT LEADERS MEETING HELD AT THE INSTANCE OF THE LEADERSHIP OF THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS NANS, BAYELSA STATE AXIS AT TAMARA EVENT PLACE, OTIOTIO, YENAGOA, BAYELSA STATE ON WEDNESDAY, 29TH OF JULY 2020.

PREAMBLE:
The meeting was called at the instance of the leadership of NANS Bayelsa State concerning students' welfare and the state of the education sector in Bayelsa State. The student leadership stressed on the need for Senator Douye Diri, the Executive Governor of Bayelsa state and his administration to take student welfare as a priority, while also congratulating him on his victory at the Supreme Court, which thus presents His Excellency as truly a miracle governor who has come to salvage the student community.

The student leadership also appreciates the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education Comr. Walton A. Liverpool for his open door policies and educative programs such as E-learning on radio and social media platforms, skill acquisition and essay writing competition organized by the ministry, in other to eliminate academic rustiness amongst students that may likely occur due to their long stay at home caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.

OBSERVATIONS:

The student leadership frowns at the neglect of student welfare by previous administrations. Some rights and privileges of the student community have been left unattended to. It is indeed very sad to state that students have not received bursary in Bayelsa State for more than five years now, but that is the obvious truth.

We also observe that the Bayelsa State Scholarship Board which supposed to serve as an alternative for academically sound Bayelsa students to benefit from have been left out for more than six years.

Furthermore, the sudden hike in fees at the Niger Delta University has really been a pain in the neck of parents especially the peasant farmers and fishermen living in the creeks, who can no longer afford the fees of their children in a state owned university.

Following our tour across primary and secondary schools in the state, we have equally observed that some primary and secondary schools across the eight Local Government Areas are so dilapidated thereby putting the lives of students at risk.

The students' leadership has observed the non-participation of Niger Delta University students in union activities due to the ban of student unionism in the institution, which obviously is a breeding ground for future political leaders, and promoting the competitiveness of students in the Niger Delta University with sister institutions.

Since the establishment of the Bayelsa State College of Health Technology (BYCOHTECH) Otuogidi in 2005 (fifteen years ago), there have bee issues of accreditation and till date it is yet to be accredited.

Students mobility within and outside the state has been a major challenge for long while.

Finally, in Federal University Otuoke and Federal Polytechnic Ekowe, there are hostel accomodation, electricity, roads and water supply challenges.

RESOLUTIONS:

In the light of the above, the leadership of NANS Bayelsa State hereby resolves as follows:

That His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, Executive Governor or Bayelsa State should consider the payment of bursary to indigenous students, which is an educational support facility that has been neglected for over five years.

We also pray His Excellency to consider reviving and funding the Bayelsa State Scholarship Board in order to enable indigenous students access to scholarship.

That NDU school fees should be brought back to status quo. This is to enable even the less privileged to have access to education at an affordable rate.

That, the Vice Chancellor of Niger Delta University, Prof. Samuel E. Gowon should consider the formation of a Student Union Government (SUG) in order to allow full participation of Niger Delta University students in union activities.

Following the NCDC Covid-19 guidelines on the resumption of school, Government should as a matter of urgency fumigate all primary and secondary schools in Bayelsa State as students in SSS 3, JSS 3 and Primary 6 get set for their exams.

That His Excellency should consider the renovation of dilapidated secondary and primary schools across the state to ensure a conducive learning environment for students.

That the student leadership appreciates His Excellency for appointing one of its leaders, Barr. John Sambo as Director Of Domestic Affairs, Bayelsa State Government House.

That, His Excellency should as a matter of urgency intervene in the accreditation processes of the Bayelsa State College of Health Technology (BYCOHTECH) Otuogidi.

That, His Excellency should consider the mobility of students by providing buses for student bodies in the state.

That, the state government should consider partnering with the federal institutions in the state in providing accomodation, electricity, roads, and water supply.

Bayelsa West Students under the leadership of Comr. BOLOU Resident endorse and Adopts Hon.Seriake Dickson for Senatorial Position

Ahead of the Senatorial Elections to fill in the vacant Bayelsa West Senatorial Zone in the Nigerian Senate, student leaders from different tertiary institutions in the zone has adopted the immediate past governor of Bayelsa State, Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson as the sole candidate for the position.

The student leaders made the adoption during a meeting held in Sagbama, headquarters of the Sagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State following the giant achievements of Hon. Henry Seriake Dickson as governor for eight years.

Comrade Debekeme explained that Hon. Dickson has embarked on several educational programs that had sponsored students from the zone for foreign scholarship which is unprecedented adding that no other political leader has done.

The student President of FUO said secondary education has greatly improved with infrastructure across the two local government areas of the zone.

Supporting the motion, Comrade Asikpi Bob Akpofininie, President, National Union of Ekeremor Students said the adoption of Hon. Dickson built lasting infrastructures that have improved the quality of lives in the zone.

THE EXECUTIVE CHAIRMAN OF SOUTHERN IJAW LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA CHIEF (HON.) KIA EBIDOUGHEBOFA NIGERIA CONDEMNS IN STRONG TERMS THE MILITARY INVASION OF EKENI AND EZETU COMMUNITIES

-- CALLS ON THE STATE & FEDERAL GOVERNMENTS FOR URGENT INTERVENTION

The Executive Chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Council Chief (Hon.) Kia Ebidoughebofa Nigeris has condemned in strong terms the invasion of Ekeni and Ezetu Communities by men of the Nigerian Military on Wednesday 25th March 2020.

In his statement, he described the act which led to the loss of lives as an unwarranted intimidation, provocation, molestation and oppression of the peace-loving people of Ekeni and Ezetu communities.

Information at our disposal indicates that the invasion led to the death of a person, another shot in the leg while Chiefs and Elders were intimidated by the military who according to sources were in search of persons from other communities.

Chief Kia further stated that Ekeni and Ezetu are peace loving communities over the years. He said that due to the drastic measures put in place in those communities, criminal habitation has been at a minimal level

Chief Kia while expressing his utmost dissatisfaction stated that as the Chief Security Officer he ought to be put on the know stating that most of the issues could have even been curtailed by him as the Executive Chairman.

He called on the military to respect life and exercise due professionalism in their operation.

Chief Kia equally called on the Bayelsa State Government for urgent intervention as the people have been thrown into fear and displacement coupled with loss of lives.

The president National union of Ekeremor Community students Comrade Piyo Daniel E. Calls on Ekeremor community leaders to assist student seeking admission to higher institutions by providing jamb forms for them, particularly those persons that aren't being able to purchase the form due to financial constraints.
The president further stressed on the importance of this as he claims this will only help in developing our society because education from his view is a key part of our development .
According to the president any investment made on education is a welcomed development as he sees true education as the only means to eradicating illiteracy, poverty, cultism and disease.
He also called on students yet to acquire the form to be patient as he assure student that he will do anything within his powers to ensure that their request is given the expected level of attention.
He also used that opportunity to encourage students to study and show respect to leaders and stressed that his government is willing to go to any extent to ensure that the right thing is done.
