The debate over arms possession by youths in Nigeria has waxed and waned over the years, stirred by frequent attacks in Nigeria, especially in the Northern region. In particular, the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna bound train some months ago , where up to 398 passengers were on board, reignited a national discussion about civilians’ possession of arms.

Recent years have seen some of the worst attacks on civilians in Nigerian history. In 2021 alone, armed groups killed more than 3,500 civilians and security personnel in the northern part of the country, according to a report by Nextier Security, Peace and Development (SPD). No less than 2,491 individuals were kidnapped as complex networks of militants intensify acts of insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and criminality; and the trend looks likely to continue through 2021 and here we are in 2022 still faced with same problems as we can not leave out the Owo attack at St Francis Catholic Church on June 5

The issue of insecurity in the country, therefore, has become something of serious concern to all citizens most of who continue to wonder how the country arrived at such a dastardly situation where no one is safe; and worse still, rather than abate, the problem is escalating and now totally out of control.

Thomas Hobbes, an English political philosopher and thinker described the state of nature as a “war of every man against every man”.

It is obvious that the state of the country at present is precarious one as attackers now invade people’s privacy and steal away their social freedom, liberty and sense of being.
Now the question is,should the use of fire arms by youths be legalized in Nigeria as a way of curbing insecurity and for individual protection or self defense and What are the likely implications ?

Strong people are wise, loving, and kind. They are confident and comfortable in their own skin, so they share their wisdom and time lifting others up.
They believe we all must rise, and truly know that there is always enough for everyone to shine. 💙

You would recall few years ago,the Nigerian Youth came together to prove how agitated they were, formidable and were so organized, for once they had one voice protesting against police brutality and some other issues;they wanted a positive change from the government and wanted it addressed.
As the dust of the epochal youth protest tagged settles and the billows die down, everybody is taking note of the costs, what was done, what shouldn’t have been done and the possibilities ahead. For once, the young people said it loud and clear to the people in government that they are watching and can change the course of history.
And thereafter, they clamoured for “youth O’clock”and promised to bring the positive change by getting involved in electoral processes but ironically, to our surprise, same youths who are clamoring for positive change still got into vote selling and buying; people have noted this and raised concern ,from the few elections witnessed recently ...
And this has spurred questions like... where did the energy go, what made them change course? Can’t that same energy used during end protest be channeled into participating in elections and electoral process to achieve their aim?
Let’s talk.... Your take on this?

Aneke John Paul’s prayer

Chukwu Okike Abiama, humbly look unto us with your mercy because the struggle is real for the hustlers on the streets.

We know that you have given us brain 🧠 to reason and rewrite our history.

Kindly reactivate our consciousness so that we can grab our present with both hands 👐 via PVC, and say "BASTA" once and for all to archaic mentality and forge a better world for our offsprings.

We pray oh Obasi 🙏

We can continue with the conversation here...

Let’s talk about our focus for tonight;something trivia yet important. Making reference to a particular lady’s post she put up on her social media, expressing her grievance with a guy she accepted to go on a date with and why the guy made her pay for what she ordered for while on the date. We are youths and we love to explore 😎we can find ourselves in this kind of situation, never say never😁😁 Questions coming through though though, like what happens to being a perfect gentleman, why will you ask a lady out on a date if you are not capable to foot the bill? Why will a lady order for something worth more than what the guy ordered for? Where is the rule that says a man must pay? Why take a lady to a restaurant where you can’t afford the bill but what’s your take on it??
Here is the gist 👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾while she also had a chat with the guy to really know what the guy was up to👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾👇🏾below is her post and the conversation as well

Please don’t forget to like our page and follow as well. Let’s keep the conversation going 👍🏽

✌🏽✌🏽✌🏽Rights leave you with that sense of entitlement but obligations poke that humility in you to make you want to serve, leaving you with a sense of responsibility, bearing in mind that you also have roles to play if you must have that positive change you long to see to make the world a better place. So here is the question; can you give up some rights to take up more obligations as a youth??

Let’s talk about The Prevalence of Mob action and Jungle Justice in the 21st century amongst youth

Giving the cases of such incidents as seen in the News and videos served on social media at different times and places, no doubt jungle justice is becoming prevalent in the country and It is said that oftentimes, the perpetrators of such vile actions are youths and the images of the mob of young people excited and jubilant in the atrocity of lynching an innocent person is disturbing and makes us wonder what the future of Nigeria will become with these types of young people in our midst. Life almost has little or no value .What should even be more disturbing to a civilised mind is the way people pull out their phones to record such man’s inhumanity to man with no empathy.

This calls for concern.
Shouldn’t we begin to ask questions about how this came to be? how did we even get here?
What could incite such wicked behaviour? What could be responsible for such act?
*In a chat with some youths, some tried to make case for such action ,giving reasons such as people are discontented and are losing faith in social system,in the judicial system and are easily provoked and so resorting to self- help even in criminal and social justice issues but what we don’t understand is ,if these reasons are enough to back up such heinous acts. What’s your opinion?

* How true is the claim that perpetrators of such vile actions are often times the youth,? If this is true, then what threat does it pose to the future of the country .(Implications)

* What is the way forward? How can we prevent such from recurring ,of course we must take proactive approach but what are the things we must do now?

Let’s keep the conversation going 👌🏿

Today, we see a good number of youth out there, desperately trying to cut corners to make it to the top, they want to get to the top easily, trying to skip the developmental processes that will prepare them for leadership roles,to face challenges of life and also help groom them on how to take responsibility and be accountable, as it is said that these processes are the requirements to keeping them at the top when they eventually make it through . However, there are two positions in here from the older generation ;while some people are of the opinion that there is nothing wrong with this generation being too ambitious and dogged and looking inward to get the development they need by themselves to make it to the top, besides, making it to the top is all that matters , some frown at it, as they believe that it is wrong to skip the processes and stages of making it to the top which should be acquired through mentoring and the learning approach must be deliberate and gradual as there are consequences for such negligence.
What’s your take on this ? Let’s rub minds together together on this week edition of Youth debate ,a youth chat parlour where we discuss everything concerning the youth of today with topics of concern from all areas of life on Orange 94.5FM Akure every Wednesday from 7pm till 8pm
