NAIRA SCARCITY: POS "HIKE" CHARGES

From Abdullateef Aliyu (Lagos) Peter Moses (Abeokuta) Raphael Ogbonnaiye (Ekiti) Kelvin Meluwa (Asaba) & Usman Bello (Benin)

There’s no end in sight to the scarcity of cash across the country even as Point of Sale (POS) agents have jacked up their charges by 100 per cent, checks by Daily Trust have shown.

The scarcity of cash has persisted in recent times despite the Supreme Court judgement which ordered that the new and old notes should remain legal tender.

But the judgement has not addressed the raging cash scarcity as banks have limited withdrawal for customers while Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) rarely dispense cash.

In Lagos, one of our correspondents visited several ATMs which were not dispensing.

However, the POS operators which were the available options for many people have now increased their charges, collecting N400 for N10,000 withdrawal instead of N200.

POS operators alleged that staff of banks are demanding the sum of N10,000 to get N100,000.

Right now, some operators are charging between N300 and N400 for N10,000, our correspondent further reports.
No cash in the ATM machine of Fidelity Bank by NIMASA Headquarters on Burma Road, Apapa; Access Bank, GTB branches on Burma Road, are also not dispensing.

In Delta, POS operators charge N700 for N20,000. They charge between N200/N300 for N5,000. In some places within Delta State, POS operators charge N300 for N5,000.

Mrs Ese Rebowhe who is a POS operator in Asaba said, “When you go to the bank to collect money, you will not get it as you want; maybe you want to collect N20,000, they will only give you N5000.

In Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, POS operators have increased their charges from N100 to N200 on N5,000 withdrawal, following the naira scarcity in the state.

Findings by our correspondent also showed that commercial banks have pegged the amount of money that can be withdrawn over the counter to N20,000/N50,000.

But at the ATM stands, customers can only make withdrawals of N5,000 to N40,000. “Only Sterling Bank pays N150,000 at the ATM stand and it’s only for the bank’s customers,” a customer said. A POS operator in Abeokuta simply identified as Favour POS told Daily Trust that she now buys cash in order to stay in the business.

“It has affected me a lot. As it is now, I am buying cash. And the reason is that I don’t want to stay at home,” she said.

The Central Bank of Nigeria had on Wednesday assured that there is enough cash in circulation while blaming hoarding for the scarcity.

History.

Frank Calvin Mann was Howard Hughes’ top engineer and lifelong best friend. He was a hidden genius behind much of Howard Hughes’ success in the world of aviation and mechanics.

Frank Calvin Mann (November 22, 1908 – November 30, 1992) was an African American engineer who was known for his participation in many Howard Hughes's projects including the Spruce Goose. He also starred in the Amos 'n' Andy radio show. Apparently, his lifelong friendship with Hughes was instrumental in opening doors for Mann's exceptional talents.

A native of Houston, Texas, Frank Calvin Mann's parents wanted him to become a schoolteacher, but from childhood, he had a natural ability to fix things. At age 11, he had his own mechanic shop. As a teenager, he worked alongside airplane mechanics, repairing engines. By the ago of 20, he had designed and built several of his own Model-T cars. It was unheard of in the 1920s for a Black man to have anything to do with cars, trains, or airplanes. His life-long friend Howard Hughes was instrumental in opening doors for Mann's exceptional talents.

Mann attended the University of Minnesota and UCLA where he earned a mechanical engineering degree. World War II equipment that revolutionized military weaponry would not exist if not for his involvement. Incredibly, few Americans are aware of Frank Mann. He was the first Black commercial pilot for American Airways. He was also a distinguished military officer. In 1935, following Italy’s invasion of Ethiopia, Frank Mann flew reconnaissance missions for the Ethiopian army.

He served in the World War II Army Air Corps and was the primary civilian instructor of the famous Tuskegee Airmen in 1941. He left Tuskegee after a rift with the U.S. government, which didn't want the Squadron, an all-Black unit, flying the same high caliber of airplanes as their White counterparts. An angry Mann had refused to have his men fly old "World War I biplane crates," because his airmen had proven themselves as equals.

Though they were being given inferior equipment and materials, their squadron never lost a plane, bomber, or pilot, and they were nicknamed the "Red Tails.” After the war, Mann was instrumental in designing the first Buick LeSabre automobile and the first communications satellite launched for commercial use.

His pride and joy was a miniature locomotive enshrined in the Smithsonian Institute, Mann also played a principal role in the Amos ‘N’ Andy radio show. He moved back to his hometown in the 1970s.

Frank Mann died November 30, 1992 in Houston.

‘I am the voice behind Psquare’s hit song ‘story’ – Helen Paul Reveals

Nigerian comedian, Helen Paul has revealed she was the voice behind ‘Uncle, please tell us a story’, in Psquare’s ‘Story’, a song released in 2005.

She revealed this in a recent interview on the Honest Bunch Podcast, stating that she was a receptionist at the time and that she got the gig after the children who were meant to do the voiceover failed to show up.

Her words: “At the beginning, I didn’t know P Square. I didn’t even know they were going to blow. They came to the studio, and they wanted to record their songs. I think they were expecting some children to come and got disappointed. So, Ayoadeife said, “We have somebody who can do this voice, and this person can do all the range children,” she added.

“I didn’t know what range was, but I was just very good at imitating voices to date. I was a receptionist then, and when they told them, they agreed. And the guy just said, Helen, ‘You will work in the nights, but we’re not paying much. I said, I don’t care; just buy me a ‘soft drink’, because I loved it at the time.

“So they gave me the job, and I did the voicing of the children in the song. So they merged all the different children. So it sounded full. When the song started reigning, I didn’t even know what it was to put your name on a song; I didn’t fight for it.”

Helen Paul also revealed that her voice got her many jobs, and she moved from earning N9,500 monthly to over N400,000 monthly.

She said, “The next job I did was for another milk product. I was at the reception when they brought this job, and they told me the child that was to do it was having exams. They said they would not be able to take that in the office because the advert needed to air at 3 p.m. and it was 12 p.m., so they were looking for a baby voice.

“Uncle Ayo said, ‘Let’s try Helen’ and they brought me in to lay the voice, which I did. After the ad, I signed a paper for which I didn’t know the content. At that point, my salary was N9,500; I started receiving about N400,000 or N450,00 every month.”

Helen Williams from Lagos, Nigeria has achieved a new record for the longest handmade wig which stretches an incredible 351.28 metres (1,152 ft 5 in)
Report by Sanj Atwal | 14 Nov., 2023

Nigerian wigmaker Helen Williams has created the world’s longest handmade wig, measuring 351.28 metres (1,152 ft 5 in).

Helen spent 11 days and over two million naira (ÂŁ2,031; $2,493) making the wig.

After constructing the underlay with wig-cap netting and black fabric attached to a bicycle helmet, she completed the hairpiece using 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hair spray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and 6,250 hair clips.

“Finding the materials to make the longest wig was not an easy task,” Helen said. “My experience as a wigmaker helped a lot.”

Helen has been working as a professional wigmaker for eight years, producing anywhere from 50 to 300 wigs per week.

“I have trained hundreds of students and have made thousands of wigs,” she revealed.

Despite having such extensive experience, creating the record-breaking wig was not a simple feat for Helen.

“At some point, I felt exhausted,” she shared.

“However, friends and family encouraged me. I did not want to let them down, so I maintained my focus. The outcome is the longest handmade wig in the world.”
The biggest challenge Helen faced was finding a space to have the wig laid out in a straight line and accurately measured, as none of the venues she visited – including several running tracks – were long enough to accommodate it.

She eventually decided to do it beside the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway, a long road connecting the cities of Lagos and Abeokuta.

Helen now keeps the wig in her office, where she invites anyone to come and look at it “whenever they want to”.

Having grown up reading the annual Guinness World Records book each year, Helen is overjoyed at now being a record holder herself.

“It will take a while for me to digest,” she said.

“This achievement is one of the best things that has ever happened to me. I still cannot believe it.”
