Internet Scam: Mother, Son FBI Wanted List Jailed In Lagos

An internet scammer Damilola Ahmed Adeyeri and his mother, Alaba Kareem Adeyeri, have been convicted on a four-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretence to the tune of $82, 570, about N29.9million.
The charge was preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke of the Federal High Court, Ikoyi, Lagos, convicted the woman and her son on Tuesday and sentenced them to three years each in a correctional centre.
The judge found them guilty on all counts. But the sentences for each count would run concurrently.
Justice Aneke further ordered that all the properties and monies recovered from the convicts be forfeited to the Federal Government and upon applications by the victims, restitution be made to them.
The convicts were arrested following a petition from the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against Damilola Adeyeri and others now at large on an alleged case of conspiracy, obtaining under false pretence, money laundering and computer-related fraud.
Armed with the petition, the operatives of the Commission immediately swung into action and upon investigations found out that his mother was an accomplice in the crime.
Idi Musa, an investigator with the EFCC, while being led in evidence narrated to the court that sometime in April 2019, that the Commission received a petition from the FBI, alleging that the official email address of American Cranes Manufacturing company was hacked and as a result the sum of $82, 570. 00 was stolen by the fraudsters.
He told the court that the petitioner reported that there was a syndicate of fraudsters who defrauded many companies through business email compromise and obtained millions of dollars from American citizens.
Idi further revealed that Damilola was arrested on September 6, 2019, after which his mother was apprehended when she went to withdraw money from the bank upon hearing that EFCC was investigating her son. He said Damilola’s mother bought properties in the name of her son with the money made from the fraud.
He also told the court that the sums stolen by the convicts were used to acquire properties in choice areas of Lagos, and some cash were found in their accounts.
One of the count reads: “that you, Damilola Ahmed Adeyeri, Alaba Kareem Adeyeri and Karen Russell (still at large) sometime on the 21st day of June 2017, in Lagos within the jurisdiction of the court conspired to fraudulently impersonate the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of American Cranes Manufacturing Company with intent to gain monetary advantage in the sum of $82, 570. 00 (Eighty Two Thousand Five Hundred and Seventy US Dollars) and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27 (1) (b) and 22 (3) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition Prevention etc) ACT, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (1) of the same Act.”
Another count reads: “That you Damilola Ahmed Adeyeri, Alaba Kareem Adeyeri and Karen Russell (still at large), sometime on the 19th day of July 2017, in Lagos, within the jurisdiction of this court dishonestly represented yourself as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of American Cranes Manufacturing Company thereafter you sent an email from [email protected] with intent to gain advantage to yourselves and you thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 27 (1) (a) and 22 (3) of the Cyber Crime (Prohibition Prevention etc) ACT, 2015 and punishable under Section 22 (1) of the same Act”.
After the charges were read to the convicts, they pleaded guilty to the four-count charge of conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretences.

Politicians, Security Agencies Frustrate Free Elections In Nigeria – INEC
Nigerian politicians, security agencies and others have been indicted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as being the hindrance to free and fair elections in the country.
The position was made by Rotimi Oyekanmi, on behalf of the chairman of INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, at a parley with journalists in Lagos.
The Guardian reports that Oyekanmi categorically mentioned politicians as one of the biggest problems faced by INEC in the course of elections. According to him, they do everything possible to sabotage the system and subvert the process.
He noted that the politicians have now adopted the strategy of disrupting elections in places where they know they cannot win.
He lamented that if INEC decides to withhold elections in such affected areas, the same politicians turn around to accuse the commission of incompetence.
Giving illustration, he said: “When politicians realised that we had changed both the colours and other features of polling papers in 2015, they then thought up a new strategy.
“They resorted to vote-buying, which was so prominent in Ekiti state. We were surprised; we didn’t know that would happen. We didn’t face that scenario in Anambra.”
He said some of the other challenges faced by the commission include voter apathy, the law that one can only vote where one registered.
The Situation Room, a civil society group, also, on Monday, December 30, released its review of the performance of INEC.
Clement Nwankwo, convener of the civil society group, said that the electoral body lacked the ability to stand up to the agencies of state that are used to manipulate elections.

Lagos Residents’ Choice Of Religion Will Be Protected, Says Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Government says it will continue to protect the right of residents to practise the religion of their choices.

Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said this on Friday at the 34th National Quranic Recitation Competition organised by the Centre for Islamic Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, in collaboration with Muslim Community of Lagos State.

Sanwo-Olu said that Lagos remained a cosmopolitan state where people of diverse religious, ethnic and cultural orientations had lived together in peace, tolerance, mutual respect and understanding for centuries.

“As a government, we will continue to protect the right of every citizen to practise every religion of their choice without fear of harassment or discrimination,” he said.

According to him, Islam is a religion of peace; encouraging tolerance and harmonious coexistence among all people of different beliefs.

The governor said that as the country engaged in the battle against extremism, the Quran recitation programme would, among other initiatives, promote a true understanding of the religion of Islam.

He said that the programme would help make young people less vulnerable to beliefs that were not consistent with the teachings of the religion.

“To underscore the importance of this, it was reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammed (PBoH), in his last sermon, emphasised that he was leaving behind for Muslims, two things that will continue to serve as a guide for them after his demise: the Quran and his personal examples,” Sanwo-Olu said.

Police Detain Quilox Owner, Shina Peller, In Maroko, Lagos

Shina Peller, a House of Representatives member, has been reportedly detained at the Maroko Police Station in Lagos State.
Peller, representing Iseyin/Itesiwaju/Kajola/Iwajowa Federal Constituency, Oyo State, is the owner of a popular Lagos club, Quilox.
It was gathered that the lawmaker was allegedly arrested while trying to take the bail of some customers of the popular club.
Kola Popoola, who is Peller's spokesperson, said his principal's offence was not disclosed to him as his phones were seized.
According to Popoola, the clubbers were arrested for allegedly parking on the road during a show at the club.
However, the Lagos State Police Command has cleared air on the arrest of the owner of Quilox club, Shina Peller.
Police authority said Peller was arrested for unlawfully invading a police station in the state.
The police said Peller mobilised 5 thugs to invade the Maroko police station around 11am on Monday, December 23, to forcefully move three vehicles that were towed from his club for obstructing traffic.
Lagos police spokesperson, Bala Elkana, in a statement said Peller and 5 thugs were arrested for the invasion.
According to the statement, police officers on traffic control along Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, sent a traffic report to Maroko police station on Sunday, December 22, that the entire road leading to the toll gate was blocked as a result of indiscriminate parking on the major road by customers of Quilox, located on 183 Ozumba Mbadiwe, Victoria Island, Lagos.
It was reported that based on the report, the divisional police officer, Maroko informed Peller on the need to ensure that customers to his club do not block the major road to mitigate the undue hardship the obstruction is causing to other road users.
The statement read: “Police eventually cleared the traffic and the honourable member promised to keep the road free of traffic. Traffic was observed to have built up on the road again, and the police traced the cause to the club again. The situation was so bad that commuters have to resort to trekking.
“In order to decongest the traffic, officers from Maroko division were mobilised to the street, three vehicles parked on the major highway by some customers of the club, which actually caused the obstruction, were removed to the station.
“The club owner mobilised over 50 thugs around 11am and invaded the police station to forcibly move the vehicles away.”
Elkana said that the police officers that were on duty at the station sent a distress message to the state command for reinforcement, and officers from the neighbouring stations were deployed to reinforce the station.
“The Honourable member and five thugs were arrested while others scaled through the fence and escaped," he said.
Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, has directed that the case should be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for investigation.
The police said suspects would be charged to court.

Residents Run For Safety As Rival Cult Groups Clash In Surulere

Pandemonium ensued on Monday, December 16, in Pako and Surulere areas of Lagos State over a reported clash among two rival cult groups.
Residents in the areas scampered for safety when they heard a cascade of gunshots.
A Twitter user, Akeem Ishola, said in a tweet that Aguda Surulere was on fire right, adding that shops were locked while valuable items were being vandalized.
He said the fight broke out among rival area boys, saying that the police were watching helplessly.
According to him, the fight has been on for couple of days, “Aguda Surulere on fire right now. Shops locked and valuable items being vandalized. Fighting amongst rival area boys. Police watching and helpless. This fight has been on for couple of days/weeks.”
Officers of the Rapid Respond Squad (RRS) and other police officers from divisions around later bombarded the ground to restore normalcy around Pako/Aguda where a fight broke out between rival groups.
According to the RRS, arrests have been made and police patrol in the area was still in progress.
The police public relations officer in Lagos State, Elkanah Bala, confirmed that a team of police officers had been sent to the scene.
“The operation is ongoing. We have police officers there to take care of the situation and tell us what actually happened. I was initially told it was a clash between some cults, but I don’t have the details yet," he was quoted to have said.

Ikorodu, Ajah Cult Clashes Claim 3 Lives
Three persons have been killed in separate cult clashes in the Ikorodu and Ajah areas of Lagos State.
It was gathered that one of the victims was killed on the Igbogbo-Igbe Road last Thursday around 11pm.
His co**se was said to have been evacuated around 1.17pm on Friday by police personnel from the Ijede Police Station.
Some residents of the area said that some youths, who adorned themselves with charms, visited the scene and told them that the victim was their family member.
One of the residents, who identified herself simply as Tosin, said she had yet to go to bed when she heard loud noise, only to come out in the morning and see the co**se of a young man on the road.
She stated, “I thought some people had a misunderstanding and had gone their separate ways as we didn’t hear their noise again.
“But in the morning when I woke up to go to the market, I was shocked to see the co**se of a young man on the road.
“In fact, those selling palm wine and bush meat along the road shut their shops. It was around 1.17pm when the police from Ijede came to evacuate the co**se.”
Another suspected cult member was hacked to death with machetes at Ofin in Ikorodu.
A source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said some cultists were in the area where the man was killed to ascertain that he was actually dead.
At Lamgbasa in Ajah on Saturday, a cultist, who was allegedly shot by members of a rival group, was said to have been taken to hospital by the police but he died two days after.
A police source said that since the man died, nobody had come to claim his co**se.
According to him, the police tried their best to revive him, but having been seriously injured, he did not survive the attack.
He said, “The police, led by the Divisional Police Officer, Ajah, Adaobi Okafor, tried to save the life of the injured victim of the cult attack by taking him to hospital.
“It was unfortunate that after two days in hospital, he could not survive owing to the massive loss of blood before the police arrived the scene to rescue him.
“As I am talking to you, no family member or friend has come to claim the co**se. This is a further proof that he was a cultist.”
The telephone of the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Bala Elkana, rang out when contacted him on the matter.
He had also yet to respond to a text message sent to his mobile phone as of the time of filing this report.

PDP Blasts Bode George Over Doherty's Election As Lagos Chairman
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called out the former Deputy National Chairman, South West, of the party, Chief Olabode George, over his recent comment on the election of the new chairman for its Lagos chapter.
PDP's leadership said that the conduct of its affairs was in line with rules and procedures as provided in its constitution.
It was gathered that the party was reacting to a statement credited to Bode George faulting the recent election into the party executive committee in Lagos State.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, PDP noted that George mixed up the issues, as it added that the election was conducted credibly.
Ologbodiyan said “Perusing the said publication, it is easily decipherable by all informed members and critical stakeholders that Chief George mixed up issues. We believe he did this inadvertently, and unfortunately came to an erroneous conclusion, probably because he does not have the correct facts on the matter at hand.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the National Working Committee (NWC) wishes to state that the process that produced the elected Adedeji Doherty-led Lagos State Executive Committee followed all due process as stipulated by the PDP constitution, the party guidelines, the electoral act; and without any whimsical interference by the national leadership.”
He said all actions taken by the party's members in Lagos in filling vacancies left either by resignations, defections and or death of occupants of those offices followed due process.
The statement added “It was a collective decision of the majority of our members in the state taken in a determination to reposition our party for the challenges ahead; a development which ought to be commended by well-meaning leaders and members of our party.
“Nigerians, especially, Lagosians, are aware that PDP members and her supporters are in the majority in the state but have wondered over the years why the fortunes of the party have not measured up to her numerical strength in successive general elections.
“No responsible and meaningful national party leadership and committed followership would allow a promising state chapter of her party, like the PDP, to be eternally polarized, balkanized and stifled, through continuous decimation of her membership due to unwarranted wrangling.
“The PDP therefore calls on all critical stakeholders and teeming members in Lagos State to close ranks, put aside all personal and parochial interests and work with the newly elected leadership to strengthen our party and provide Lagosians that credible platform to rescue their state from the strangulating and exploitative regime of the All Progressives Congress (APC).”
George had in the statement carpeted the Uche Secondus-led PDP NWC for doing a poor job on the election of the new executive committee for the party in Lagos.
Following the defection of Moshood Salvador to the ruling APC earlier this year, Adedeji Doherty was sworn-in as the new chairman of the PDP in Lagos State.

Arewa Youths Call On Buhari To Stop Sanwo-Olu From Arresting Northerners In Lagos
The Arewa Youth Consultative Forum (AYCF) has demanded explanation from the Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for the alleged arrest and humiliation of northerners resident in the state.
In a statement made available to the press on Monday, December 9, and signed by its president, Yerima Shettima, the group also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to call the governor to order.
The group accused the state of hounding the northerners, mostly commercial motorcyclists, with the state's task force, who go to the homes of the residents at odd hours to effect arrest.
The group also noted that Lagos State government never banned the use of motorcycles but only restricted them from some roads, and added that the arrest of the northerners was already causing tension.
"We reliably gathered that, using a Gestapo style the Lagos Task force officials have been invading homes of northerners in Lagos in ungodly hours of the night and carting away motorcycles while forcefully abducting the occupants and hauling them into detention," AYCF alleged.
While describing the arrest as acts of impunity against northerners, the group said it was strange that this is coming from the South West, a region that expects the North to hand over power to it in 2023. "We have reason to now wonder if the South West truly expects the North to make it a successor in 2023," the statement said.
The group said it finds it unacceptable the state government would decide to forcefully invade the homes of northerners very late at night just for the purpose of arresting them for offences they have not committed. The AYCF demanded that the state government must explain the rationale behind the arrest of the northerners.
"It was very touching when we saw the task force officials raiding homes with majority of northerners in Oshodi area on the wee hours of the night," the group said and that it would not condone the actions of the task force anymore.
The group said “We demand immediate explanation for this humiliating operation, let either the Lagos State government tell the world that it officially sanctioned this Gestapo operation or it was the instruction of Task Force boss that we are seeing this physical assault on our people.
“We are deeply disturbed by this rather uncivilised conduct in the 21st century, happening in a supposedly cosmopolitan city like Lagos. We gathered that the people in many northern states are already tensed up by the news filtering out of Lagos since Thursday through Saturday. And we dare say this kind of tension in the north has very often been a precursor to revenge attacks. Something drastic must be done to avoid a recurrence of past security challenges caused by the humiliation of northerners in Lagos.
“We call on President Buhari to take drastic steps in ensuring this impunity by Lagos state government or task force is halted immediately. We call on all security agencies to take immediate steps in averting a situation capable of destabilising the country. Northerners, like other Nigerians, have every right to movement for trade anywhere in the country as guaranteed by the constitutional provision on freedom of movement.
“Most importantly, we call for the immediate release from prison all the innocent northerners whose homes were raided in the ungodly hour by task force officials. This, in our candid view, will be the first step in ensuring justice for the innocent northerners. Why haul them into detention, in defiance of well-known constitutional provisions or the rule of law in general?
“We wish to reiterate that any further attempt to humiliate innocent northerners in any part of this country will be resisted by our group with all the available legal and constitutional weapons. In a balanced world, institutions are created for tackling problems but not in the manner Lagos State government through the task force is currently doing to our own people. It is therefore a smear on decorum, disrespectful of human dignity and a brazen abuse of official powers. And this is totally unacceptable. Whoever has ear, let him hear. Enough of this physical assault on innocent northerners in Lagos, we so warn!
Shettima had earlier said the North will produce the next president when Muhammadu Buhari leaves office in 2023.

Tinubu Most Qualified To Succeed Buhari – APC Youths

Youths within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) have called on members and leaders of the party to allow former Lagos State governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, succeed President Muhammadu Buhari, come 2023.
The youths, under the aegis of APC National Awareness for Youth Vanguard, while making the call, lauded President Buhari for removing whatever doubts in the minds of Nigerians regarding his rumoured third term bid, saying the president had demonstrated uncommon statesmanship.
The youth group within the APC made the call in a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Muktar Abubakar and National Secretary, Mr Dayo Ogunjebe respectively, warning those it called mischief makers angling to profit from the rumoured third term bid of the president to desist from the act.
According to it, the act if not stopped was capable of dragging the person and the office of the president in the mud as the constitution only guarantees two terms of office for the president.
The APC youths, in their argument, said Tinubu, who is equally the National Leader of the ruling APC, by right of qualification and party loyalty, was eminently qualified to take over the mantle of leadership from Buhari.
According to leaders of the group, the call to have Tinubu succeed Buhari is also premised on the contributions of the former Lagos State governor to the founding of the party.
“We are calling on members and the leadership of the APC to look towards the direction of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023. This is a man who has paid his dues within the party and we believe whoever has made any form of sacrifice must be entitled to benefit from the fruits of his labour,” the group said.
The group paid glowing tributes to the efforts of Tinubu whom it stated was not only instrumental but very cardinal to the formation of the ruling party in 2014, adding that the APC National Leader not only formed the party but deployed all he could to ensure that APC defeated the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party Party (PDP) in 2015.
While advocating power shift to the southern part of the country as a means to foster national unity and cohesion, the group stated that Tinubu by virtue of his contributions to the APC is on the vantage position to clinch the ticket of the ruling party.
“When we argue that power should shift t the south, to us, it is a legitimate call, which we fully support for the promotion and sustenance of peace, progress and unity of the country.
“When we look at the array of gladiators jostling for the leadership of the country in 2023, it is our view that no one else towers above Tinubu in terms of contact and exposure,” the APC youths said.
Commenting on the position of Buhari, who recently at the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting APC at the party’s headquarters in Abuja dismissed purported rumour of an impending bid for a third term in office, the group lauded the president, describing the move as a welcome development for the progress and unity of the county.
“We want to place on record our appreciation to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, for coming out to dispel the rumour (of a likely third term bid). That singular factor has no doubt helped in dousing tension in the polity.
“We are also calling on mischief makers to desist from their actions and not to drag the name and office of the president in the mud,” the group warned.

Fire Destroys Plaza, 15 Shops, Goods In Lagos
Goods worth millions of naira were on Wednesday destroyed by fire, which wreaked havoc on 15 shops on Balogun Road in the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos State.
It was gathered that the fire started around 2am from one of the shops and spread to the others before help could come.
Residents were seen lamenting the damage the fire had done to the shops and the goods in them, noting that some of the shop owners had been hospitalised.
One of the shop owners, simply identified as Bolaji, urged the state government to come to the aid of the victims.
Bolaji, who is a printer, noted that all his customers’ jobs got burnt, adding that he was unable to salvage any.
He said, “Everything in my shop got burnt. I bought one machine last week for N250,000 for the end of the year heavy schedule, but it got burnt. All my customers’ works as well as computers, three generators, souvenir materials and machines got burnt.
“The government should come to our aid, because we do not know where to start from. As I am talking to you, I am very distraught; some of the other shop owners have been admitted to hospital.
“One of the affected shop owners, an Ibo man who sells provisions, wines and other things, lost his sanity because he just stocked his shop yesterday (Tuesday).”
Another shop owner, Lukman Adejola, who deals in clocks and wristwatches, said his phone was switched off when the fire started, adding that all his goods had been burnt before he got to the scene.
He stated, “I learnt that the fire started around 2am but my phone was switched off. When I switched it on this morning, I received a call that all the shops had been gutted by fire. So, I rushed down here and saw that everything had been burnt down. We could not bring anything out.”
One of the first responders, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said residents of the area tried to salvage the goods in the shops, but they did not succeed as the shops were securely locked.
When contacted, the spokesperson for the state Fire Service, Muinat Adeleke-Ashimi, that she would make an enquiry and get back to our correspondent, but she had yet to do so as of the time of filing this report.
In a related development, fire gutted the upper floor of a one-storey shopping plaza on Akerele Street in the Surulere area of the state on Wednesday.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said preliminary investigation conducted at the scene of the incident revealed that the inferno resulted from power surge in one of the shops before spreading to other parts of the plaza.
The Public Affairs Officer, LASEMA, Nosa Okunbor, said in a statement that there was no loss of life or injury, but goods worth millions of naira were lost to the inferno.
Okunbor stated that apart from LASEMA personnel, men of the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, and the federal and Lagos State fire services were battling to prevent the fire from spreading to the adjoining buildings.

Fire Guts Surelere Plaza In Lagos
Traders in Surelere Plaza were hit with yet another tragedy as the shopping complex was reportedly gutted by fire in the evening of Wednesday, November 20.
Footage of the fire incident was shared on Twitter.
In the 29-second video clip, motorists and passersby are seen scampering for safety as the fire ravages the plaza.
While there are no details regarding the cause of the fire outbreak, another Twitter user, said fire service operatives are already on ground working to put out the fire.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has also reacted to the fire incident.
The shopping complex located in his constituency, Gbajabiamila tweeted "My thoughts and prayers are with traders in Surulere Plaza, Akerele, in my constituency over the fire outbreak that gutted the complex this evening."
Barely five days ago a building near the popular Tejuosho Market, Yaba, Lagos, was also destroyed fire. The building, which was affected by the fire incident on Thursday, November 14, is located opposite the renovated market.
Preliminary findings allegedly showed that the fire was caused by a power surge from one of the rooms before escalating to other parts of the building.
