El-Rufai’s Son Calls For Scrapping Of 'Useless' ASUU

Bashir, one of the sons of Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on Monday, described the Academic Staff Union of Universities as a 'useless union' that should be dissolved and replaced with educators who care about students.

This comes after ASUU decided to extend its ongoing strike.

Bashir made the statement on Twitter, saying, "ASUU is a very useless union. They should be scrapped & replaced with educators that actually give a damn about students and how that translates to the future of this country."

ASUU commenced strike on February 14th, 2022.

JUST IN: ASUU NEC Press Briefing To Hold Soon.

The ASUU press conference is set to reveal outcome of ASUU-NEC meeting that took place yesterday at the headquarters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities In Abuja.

According to report, the press briefing which is for 10:00am this morning will determine if the ASUU will suspend its seven-month-old warning strikes or unequivocally embark on an industrial strike action.

: ASUU NEC Meeting Ends, Anxiety As Union Set To Brief Press today

The meeting by members of the National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Universities on Sunday has ended, Campus Catch NG has verified.

The discussion which lasted about 5 hours was aimed at the union settling for either a suspension of the over 6-month strike or resolving to a total and indefinite action.

EKSU, UNIOSUN Roasts ASUU President

The managements of Ekiti State University and Osun State University have asked ASUU president, Prof Osodeke to apologise without delay, for referring them and other institutions that have refused to be part of the industrial action as "Quacks".

Ekiti State University in an official statement, described Osodeke's words as unfortunate, reckless and arrant nonsense.

The Vice Chancellor of UNIOSUN also expressing his displeasure, advised ASUU president to go and get educated.

Suspected hoodlums attack Osun First Lady’s convoy

The convoy of Osun State Governor’s wife, Kafayat Oyetola was on Friday night attacked by suspected thugs in Osun State.

The incident which occurred at the market area of Owode-Ede, Ede south local government area around 8:10 PM caused tension as the thugs and the security aides attached to the convoy engaged in shootout.

An eyewitness, named Ayo said, “The convoy was passing through the market when a truck suddenly blocked the lane that the convoy was passing, then the thugs who are already around the area started to haul stones at the convoy. They attacked the convoy with dangerous weapon and the operatives started shooting to the air.

“Some of the security operatives sustain injuries because one one them was shouting that we have been hit.

“They shattered the glasses of the vehicles. The incident caused panic in the area. It is so unfortunate.”

When contacted, the Media aide of the Oyetola’s wife, Iluyomade Oluwatumise confirmed the incident but refused to disclosed the numbers of security aides that sustained injury.

She said, “All I can tell you that no life was lost in the incident. I can’t tell you the numbers of security operatives that was injured but some of them that were attached to the convoy sustained various degrees of injuries.”

The Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Education Institutions (NASU) on Saturday suspended their strike actions after a brief meeting with the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu in Abuja.

Nigerian Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, in a press briefing today, has claimed that it is the responsibility of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to compensate students for the time wasted during the six-month strike, not the Federal Government.

Adamu Adamu boasted that members of the union should never expect salaries for the 6months they have stayed out from work.

Welcome New Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola

Hon. Justice Olukayode Tajudeen Ariwoola, JSC is a native of Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State.

Lord Ariwoola started his educational career in his home town Iseyin at the Local Authority Demonstration School, Oluwole in Iseyin Local government of Oyo State between 1959 and 1967. He was in the Muslim Modern School in the same town between 1968 and 1969 before proceeding to Ansar-Ud-Deen High School, Saki in Oyo North of Oyo State.

His Lordship studied law at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), Ile Ife and bagged his bachelor of laws degree with honors in July, 1980. Olu Ariwoola was called to the Nigeria bar in July 1981 and got enrolled at the Supreme Court of Nigeria as a Solicitor and Advocate soon thereafter.

His Lordship was a State Counsel on National Youth Service (NYSC) at the Ministry of Justice, Akure, Ondo State and later as Legal Officer in the Ministry of Justice of his home state Oyo State until 1988 when he voluntarily left the official bar of the State Civil Service for private practice. His Lordship worked as Counsel in-Chambers of Chief Ladosu Ladapo, SAN between October, 1988 and July 1989 when he established Olukayode Ariwoola & Co – a firm of legal Practitioners and Consultants in Oyo town in August 1989.

His Lordship must have something to do, in a way, with figure 2 and the month of November. While His Lordship was born on 22 August, 1954; he was sworn in as a Judge of the Oyo State High Court on 2nd November, 1992, as a Justice of the Court of Appeal (JCA) on 22nd November, 2005 and again was sworn in as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria (JSC) on 22nd November, 2011.

Justice Ariwoola served as Chairman, Board of Directors, Phonex Motors Ltd – one of Oodua Investment conglomerate between 1988 and 1992. Chairman, Armed Robbery Tribunal, Oyo State between May 1993 and September, 1996 when he was posted out of the headquarters, Ibadan to Saki High Court. His Lordship served on the Election Tribunals in Zamfara and Enugu States in 1999. On Election Appeal Courts in Port-Harcourt, Enugu, Benin, Yola and Ilorin at various times.

Before his elevation to the Supreme Court, his lordship served as Justice of Court of Appeal in Kaduna, Enugu and Lagos Divisions. He is also a fellow of International Dispute Resolution Institute (FIDRI) having been inducted in Dubai, U.A.E in 2014.

His Lordship has attended many International and National conferences and workshops in France, Atlanta Georgia, UK and Dubai, UAE.

Lord Ariwoola is happily married with children and he loves reading, listening to good music, photography and shopping.

JUST IN: FG Resumes Talks With Striking Unions To End Strike, To Meet ASUU Today And SSANU On Friday

The Federal Government will be resuming talks with representatives of unions in the nation’s universities this week.

The Punch investigations revealed that the committee would meet Academic Staff Union of Universities on Monday (today) while the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and allied institutions would have their meeting on Friday.

“We are meeting the FG committee in Abuja on Monday,” a source in ASUU said. The union’s National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, in an interview, also told reporters that meetings would resume this week.

“We are resuming the meeting this week and we have an invitation this week. The renegotiation meeting will only end if we have called off the strike.

“Since the strike is still on, the meeting cannot end. We do not have any problem with the committee. When we do, we will communicate with the committee,” he said.

Similarly, the Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions’ National President, Mr Ibrahim Mohammed, told our correspondent that SSANU’s meeting would be on Friday.

“Yes, we are meeting with the FG on Friday,” he said.

SSANU’s strike started with a warning strike of two weeks which commenced on the midnight of March 27, 2021, while the extension of another two weeks commenced on April 10, 2022 and it is still ongoing.
