Minister tenders apology after locking out late workers

,,,,,After several hours of protest and tension, normalcy has finally returned to the federal Ministry of Works, as the minister, David Umahi has apologised to the members of staff and promised to improve their welfare.

The Nation reported that the minister, at about 8 a.m. on Thursday, September 28, locked the entrance to the ministry against workers who arrived late for work.

The staff, however, complained that although the actions of the Minister were not totally wrong, they were not given prior notice before the “tyrannical” action.

Earlier, a staff member who spoke with The Nation, stated that aside from the high cost of transportation, he and a lot of staff live in areas that are a long distance from the ministry.

Some of the places they stay, according to him, are Keffi, Kwali, Bwari, Kaduna road, Gwagwalada, among others.

The Nation reported that during the heat of the protest, the Minister decided to open up the entrance to the Ministry, but the workers chose to remain outside, demanding an apology from the minister.

They also blocked the entrance to the Ministry with staff buses, and stopped anyone, including the minister, from coming out or going in.

They insisted that the minister must address them and give his “unreserved” apology.

It would be recalled that on Tuesday, September 26, Umahi issued a stern warning to the Staff of the Ministry, particularly the Directors during a briefing, stating that most were complicit in the substandard quality of roads by contractors across the country.

He also warned the staff members against joining the planned nationwide indefinite strike by Labour.

Following the protest, Umahi addressed the staff members and promised to improve their welfare, particularly as most complained about the high cost of transportation and the distance of the Ministry from their residence.

The minister also asked to meet with the staff to better understand their plight and rightly intervene by providing more staff buses, among other interventions.

Kwarans have tasted freedom, won't go backwards: Tinubu, Adamu, AbdulRazaq
...Thousands welcome APC presidential train to Kwara

Kwarans have heaved a sigh of relief since shaking off the yoke of political servitude in 2019, with great improvements in delivery of basic amenities and other goodies, APC leaders said on Tuesday.

"Kwara people, I congratulate you for your freedom four years ago. It was a thunderbolt across the country. You deserve great congratulations," APC presidential candidate Bola Ahmed Tinubu told thousands of party supporters and chieftains who attended the rally in Ilorin, the state capital.

"Today, we are just celebrating freedom. We are re-assessing and re-asserting our freedom in democracy. Yesterday, they never believed that today would happen, but it is happening in your lifetime. We thank you for believing in (Governor) AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq. He knows how to behave. He is a very honest and genuine, hardworking man.

"Vote for me as your presidential candidate on February 25 and vote for all our National Assembly candidates. Vote for Governor AbdulRazaq and all the House of Assembly candidates on March 11."

The rally, which was preceded by what was practically a city-wide rally as tens of thousands trooped out to catch a glimpse of the campaign train, was attended by APC Vice Presidential Candidate Kashim Shettima; Director General of the Campaign Governor Simon Lalong (Plateau); Governor of Niger Abubakar Sanni Bello; Deputy Governor Kayode Alabi; APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu; former House of Representatives Speaker Rt. Hon. Dimeji Bankole; several Senators, including the three from Kwara; House of Representatives members; Minister of Information Lai Mohammed; Minister of Youths and Sports Sunday Dare; Speaker of Kwara State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Yakubu Salihu Danladi; House of Assembly members; cabinet members; Kwara APC Chairman Prince Sunday Fagbemi; and several other dignitaries from across the country.

Accompanied by First Lady Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq commended the people of the state for coming out in droves to welcome Tinubu and his entourage.

"This huge crowd is a testament to our standing with the people of Kwara State. It shows that we have won this election. Our presidential candidate has seen what we have done in this state. Kwara is APC. Kwara indeed is one of the strongholds of the APC. Our members are happy. The state is happy. They have seen what we have done. We met a failed state in several sectors, and we have been able to tackle it from education, healthcare, and other sectors. All the indices have gone up in the right sense," he said.

"You need to continue to support this party at all levels. President Muhammadu Buhari has done well. We need to build on his success. No person could have done what he has done, despite the economic downturn, Covid-19 pandemic, and global economic crisis. We must sustain this growth consistently. That will be continued by our incoming team led by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

"Party faithfuls, I urge you to support and vote for Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The progress we have in this state will be continued with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We thank him for the support he gave us in 2019. He gave us full support in throwing out the termites in this state. We still want to thank Mr. President, who is away in Mauritania. He couldn't be here but he will come back here. We appreciate his efforts and the support he has been giving this government for the progress of the state. You all know what we have been doing in this state from healthcare. Don't allow the party of people of dubious characters to come back into this state. Don't allow people who stole the UBEC funds to come back to this state. They could not even pay salaries. What are they coming to do?

"Just last month, we paid N3.5bn for pensions and gratuities of 2009 and 2010. When we came in, there was no water works working in this state. We have 90 waterworks in this state right from the time of Sir Ahmadu Bello. They crashed everything. In fact, they were not paying counterpart funds in the health sector. Nothing."

APC National Chairman Abdullahi Adamu said Kwara has proven to be a strong APC state with the showings posted for the rally.

"Kwarans, you have really surprised me. I have seen more than what I expected, and everyone has seen what Kwara has done today. You have said it loud and clear that you are better together. We pray and hope that this is translated to real vote on the 25th of February," he said.

The campaign train later paid a special homage to the Emir of Ilorin Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, who prayed for the success of the candidate in the coming polls. He acknowledged the sterling qualities of Tinubu and Governor AbdulRazaq, who he described as great and humble achievers.

The rally was attended by many dignitaries such as APC candidates and chieftains including Senators Lola Ashiru and Sadiq Umar; House of Representatives members Tunji Raheem Olawuyi (Ajuloopin) and Mohammed Omar Bio; APC Senatorial Candidate for Kwara Central Turaki Saliu Mustapha; Mohammed Dele Belgore SAN; Mallam Isa Lanre Onilu; Hajia Faridah Dankaka; Yahya Seriki; and Alhaji Raheem Adedoyin.

Six more LGs join KwaraLEARN, laud AbdulRazaq's initiative

• Says govt working on housing, car schemes for workers

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has said his administration remains committed to quality education and human capital development, recalling how he had saved the sector from collapse and relaunched Kwara for greater future.

The Governor said the huge investment in the sector continues despite dwindling revenues and competing priorities for governments worldwide.

"Our expenses have really gone up. We are implementing KwaraLEARN. We're paying UBEC counterpart funding, which the previous administration could not pay. We are investing heavily in education and human capital development because we prioritise the sector and the future of this state, " AbdulRazaq said on Saturday in Ilorin at the induction of new set of teachers trained for KwaraLEARN programme.

KwaraLEARN is a flagship education programme of the AbdulRazaq administration, which involves the use of modern technology to train teachers, improve teaching techniques, and boost education outcomes for school children. It berthed in four local government areas (Baruten, Ilorin East, Ilorin West, and Offa) last year, with at least 45% rise in school attendance by November 2022 and significant improvements in literacy and numeracy skills of pupils.

The Governor said the programme costs a lot of money but is hugely necessary to secure the future of the Kwara child.

"If you look at the figures, between 2015 and 2019 the income to the state - FAAC, IGR and the likes were higher than what we have received between 2019 and today. By December last year, we earned N44bn less than the last administration. Yet, we are paying the N30,000 minimum wage and consequential adjustment which they could not pay," he explained, pointing up the prudence of the administration and its commitment to people's welfare.

AbdulRazaq assured teachers of improved welfare packages with the planned introduction of housing scheme and car loan support to address mobility and accommodation challenges.

He added: "We will continue to work on your welfare, not just salaries. We are working on the housing scheme, which will come in place very soon by the grace of God. You have seen how we appreciated the best teachers and so on. We will also come up with a scheme under which you will have access to car loans. So, stay the course with us. Things will improve. If the former administration had not dropped the ball, you would have been singing different tunes now. For instance, last month, we paid N3.5bn for pensions and gratuities to cover 2009 and 2010, among other arrears. We should have used that money to do some other projects under this administration. But we used it to clear the liabilities they left. That is what happens in all sectors. We are using our resources to cover liabilities of the past. We feel it is a necessity to do so as a matter of government’s obligation to the people."

He urged the teachers to continue to support his administration to consolidate on the achievements recorded so far.

"When I walked in here and I saw your faces, I saw excitement. I saw that you are happy with what you are doing. You appreciate what the state government is doing. Do we need to do more? Yes. We will do more. Your welfare is important to us. We would have gone beyond this level," he said.

"It is part of our commitment to education that brought you here. Stay the course with us. We will improve on what we do to consolidate on the successes achieved so far. We thank you for the success of our children in the presidential school debate. With the right motivation, we believe you can do better. This is a serious government. We will continue to invest in education. We thank you for the service you are rendering to Kwara."

Permanent Secretary Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Mary Adeosun, for her part, said the administration has changed the narrative in the education sector, saying the teachers are now more dedicated, committed and responsive in line with the commitment of the governor.

KwaraLearn Project Director Olusegun Abiola disclosed that six more local government areas have been integrated into the KwaraLEARN programme to ensure that the pupils get quality education in line with global best standards.

"We started with four local governments (Ilorin West, Ilorin East, Baruten and Offa) in April last year for the pilot scheme and we now extended to six more local government areas to make it 10. Now, we have Asa, Patigi, Irepodun, Ilorin South, Oke-Ero and and Ekiti local government areas enrolled to the scheme. So, we are looking forward to integrating the remaining six local governments before the year runs out," he said.

"KwaraLEARN programme is designed to improve learning outcomes in the state. This kind of programme only exists in four states in the country. The essence of the programme is to integrate technology into learning and to ensure that the pupils get quality education in line with global standards.

"This programme is to make the children learn like their counterparts in Kenya, Liberia, Rwanda and other countries where this programme is being deployed. So, the Governor, being a visionary leader with people of Kwara State at heart and knowing the children of Kwara State as the future of the state, has invested heavily in the programme to ensure that the pupils stand side-by-side with their counterparts anywhere."

How man Kidnaps Own Son, Demands N182,000 Ransom From Wife
....A man has orchestrated a daring action by kidnapping his son in exchange for a sum from his wife.

The man in question happens to be the stepdad of the 8-year-old boy and he was rescued by detectives in Kenya and reunited with his distraught mother.

The step-dad, identified as Nemwel Ondari, in the early hours of Saturday, 12th November, 2022 kidnapped the boy, after a domestic disagreement with his wife, Everline Nandera.
.....According to report, the suspect was arrested following a report filed at Embakasi police station at around 9:30 am, by the boy’s worried mother.

According to a statement issued by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations- DCI, the suspect demanded and threatened to kill the boy with a kitchen knife if the wife didn’t act fast.

“Nandera told detectives that she had left their home in Embakasi’s Tel Aviv area at the crack of dawn, headed for Muthurwa market,” the statement read.

,,,,,,,,But upon coming back at around 9:20am, she found her husband and son missing. A note had been left behind by the husband Nemwel Ondari, 32, demanding for a ransom of Sh50,000, for the release of the boy.

Immediately the woman filled her report at Embakasi police station, detectives from the elite Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) based at DCI Nairobi area were assembled and a manhunt for the suspect was launched.

The detectives assisted by their Embakasi counterparts traced the suspect and arrested him at the NMS Green Park matatu terminus off Haile Sellasie avenue, a few hours later.
....The detectives established that the couple had a heated argument last night and after Everline left early in the morning for Muthurwa to fend for her family, the man packed
The detectives pounced on the man at around 4pm, as he eagerly waited for the ransom to be deposited into his Mpesa account.

,,,,,,,,,Mother and child were reunited and the man was escorted to Embakasi police station, where he is cooling his heels awaiting arraignment.

Emir's Anniversary: Saraki disrespects Buhari's Chief of Staff (WATCH VIDEO)

•ex-Senate President flogs Ilorin marketers, throws money indiscriminately

Former President of the Nigerian Senate, Bukola Saraki, has been knocked from different quarters for disrespecting elder statesman and Chief of Staff to President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, on Friday at the Ilorin Central Mosque during the juma't service.

Saraki reportedly created some scenes at the mosque when he decided to sit on the space allocated for the President's Chief of Staff in defiance of explanation by the mosque's crew.

According to a source familiar with the development, Saraki hesitated and dragged the issue with the mosque crew who later successfully made him vacate the seat.

Apart from being an elder statesman and Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Gambari is a prince from the Sheikh Alimi royal family.

Ilorin indigenes who spoke to our reporter saw Saraki's action as an aberration which they say further evidences his pride and arrogance.

Prof. Gambari was in Ilorin to witness the launch of the UNDP economic revitalisation programme in Kwara State.

Earlier, Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq had conducted Prof. Gambari, UNDP chief Mohamed Yahya, among others, to the Garment Factory and Kwara State Social Investment Programmes (KWASSIP) office in Ilorin.

The Governor then joined the Chief of Staff in observing the juma't prayer at the Ilorin Central Mosque where Saraki had created the melodrama.

The day coincides with the 27th coronation anniversary of the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari.

Meanwhile, the Chief Imam of Ilorin warned Saraki to stop coming to the central mosque with thugs and hooligans who disrupt the prayer session.

The Imam handed the warning as Saraki causes commotion inside the central mosque where some thugs were chanting his name in search of money.

During the process of his convoy'a return from the Central Mosque which was monitored by our reporter, Saraki's security personnel flogged Ilorin market women and some passersby who had to suffer such ignominy.

The action is a flashback to the days of the dynasty which was characterized by disrespect for the people and inhumane treatment.

Governor AbdulRazaq has created a new order where his convoy meanders through the streets without commotion, blaring of sirens and brazen disregard for the people.

Saraki also threw money at thugs chanting his praises, thereby causing restlessness in Ilorin as they scampered for the money.

Salman Abdulhafeez, a student, who witnessed the event said it was a dark day that showed disrespect for human dignity, violent tendencies and commotion.

ASUU: KWSG Transports Over 900 Students for Free

•students applaud Governor AbdulRazaq

No fewer than 900 Students of Kwara State origin have been transported with over 50 numbers of 18-Seater Buses to their various institutions of learning in the Northern part of the Country in the early hours of today, an exercise which has been described as first of its kind in the history of Kwara State.

This follows the suspension of the eight-month prolonged industrial action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Dr. Alabi Afees Abolore disclosed that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq's administration decided to offer free transportation to Kwara students up north, in order to relieve their parents after the much awaited suspension of ASUU strike.

It would be recalled that the free transportation service was announced by the Ministry a few days ago, in a bid to assist the returning students to the northern axis of the country for the commencement of academic activities.

The Ministry of Tertiary Education, however, witnessed an upsurge in the number of students that appeared for documentation beyond the targeted volume that had earlier signified interest for the journey.

Dr. Abolore explained that the Ministry made provision for 13 arrival destinations, which include Gombe, Bauchi, Jigawa, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kaduna, Borno, Katsina, Kano, and FCT, among others, all of which had successfully boarded this morning and on their way for resumption to their various Schools.

While expressing his gratitude to Governor AbdulRazaq for the laudable initiative, the Commissioner emphasized the need for every government to be student-inclusive as the student community contributes a large quota towards the development of any society.

Abolore also lauded the governor for his exemplary leadership skill, which he noted has become beneficial to the Kwara student community as a whole.

The Welfare Director of the National Association of Kwara State Students (NAKSS), Comrade AbdulAfeez Saheed appreciated the efforts of the Ministry towards the plight of the student community.

“I have to appreciate the efforts of the Commissioner for Tertiary Education towards the propagation of the insightful administration of Mall. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, it is pertinent to note that Kwara Students are proud of the Governor as we have witnessed an increment in our upcoming bursary allowances.

"This free transport scheme as well another initiative is enough to express the good willingness and support of our Governor towards the student community and we appreciate his kind gesture”, Saheed said.

Another student leader from Umaru Musa Yar-Adua University in Kastina, Comrade Babapupa Abdullateef also appreciated the state government for showing its kindness to students after the ASUU strike.
