Uzodimma confused, inexperience — PDP’s Anyanwu

The Imo state Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, on Tuesday, described the Imo state Governor, Hope Uzodimma, as confused and inexperienced.

Anyanwu spoke to newsmen in Owerri, while replying to Uzodimma’s statement calling Anyanwu an infantile mindset, regarding his speech at the 11th Synod of the Anglican church in Owutu, Parish, Ezinihitte Mbaise council area in Imo.

According to Anyanwu, “The attention of the PDP Governorship candidate in Imo state, Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu has been drawn to Hope Uzodinma’s response to his speech at the 11th Synod of the Anglican church in Owutu, Parish, Ezinihitte Mbaise LGA. While speaking, Senator Anyanwu appealed to Bishops of churches to speak against thuggery, election violence, and unwarranted killings in Imo state. The intention of that statement was neither to harm anyone nor impugn reputation.

“One would have expected a focused government or even Hope Uzodinma to sit up after the harmless advice and ensure that such reckless mistake of his administration and avoidable murder in the state is curbed.”

“Regrettably, instead of taking precautions and rescuing the state from the grip of insecurity, Imo supposed Governor chose to be petty and childish in his reaction, by describing the PDP standard bearer as suffering from an infantile mindset. This is evidence that Uzodinma’s government has failed woefully. This response is most unwholesome, embarrassing, petty, and childish to have come from a supposed Governor of a state, who should be sober and apologetic to the people for failing to protect their lives and property as the Chief Security Officer of the state.

“It is noteworthy that some of the programs and policies of Uzodinma’s administration confirm the speculation that his government is confused, inexperienced, callous, and mischievous. Such a person that has brought poverty, restiveness, penury, and insecurity to a state that was known for peace should simply be in purgatory by now, rather than in the Imo state Government House,” he said.

UK commits £2m to strengthen Nigeria’ s health workforce

The United Kingdom’s Department of Health and Social Care is committing £2 million to support the Nigerian government in strengthening her health workforce in its vision to achieve Universal Health Coverage, UHC.

Welcoming the new funding commitment in a press statement, the World Health Organisation, WHO, who mended the move said the grant will cover two years’ period to support the government of Nigeria to optimize the performance, quality, and impact of the health workforce through evidence-informed policies and strategies.

The UK provided a multi-million-pound boost to support healthcare staff recruitment and retention in three African countries – Kenya, Nigeria, and Ghana – supporting resilience against global health challenges.

Nigerian health system like many countries in the global south has been beset with challenges in having a resilient health system that is able to provide quality health services, promote health and prevent diseases. The challenges have been further exacerbated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic which directly impacts the availability of health workers to provide quality services across the country.

The 2-year HRH project aims to support the government at national and sub-national levels and support regulatory bodies, professional associations, and other key stakeholders to develop transformative strategies for scaling up the quantity and quality of health workers, including competency-based curricula development and reviews.

It will help to align investment in HRH with the current and future needs of the population and health systems; strengthen the capacity of institutions including regulatory bodies for effective public policy stewardship, leadership and governance, optimise health workers’ retention, equitable distribution, and performance and strengthen the management of Health workforce data for monitoring and accountability. The project will implement interventions in Nigeria.

The project will draw on the technical capacity of WHO to strengthen health systems including experience of implementing similar projects with appreciable results in the past. Implementation

PUNCH Metro gathered that Adekunle and his school mate identified simply as Opeyemi boarded a shuttle bus from Yaba to UNILAG and while in the vehicle, a man, who was hanging at the back of the bus, dispossessed Opeyemi of her iPhone 7 plus.

Pained by the development, Opeyemi raised the alarm and Adekunle, in a desperate attempt to retrieve the phone from the robber who jumped down from the bus and fled, pursued him.

Realising that Adekunle was closing in on the suspect, it was learnt that one of the hoodlums suspected to be working with the fleeing suspect appeared from nowhere and shot the 23-year-old.

FG records N930bn two-month fiscal deficits – CBN

The Federal Government recorded N930.8bn fiscal deficit in January and February 2023 according to the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The CBN stated in its monthly economic report for February 2023 that, “The estimated overall fiscal deficit of the FGN expanded in February, due to a drop in the retained revenue.

“At N513.05bn, the provisional fiscal deficit of the FGN rose by 22.8 per cent relative to the preceding month. However, it was 16.2 per cent below the budget benchmark.”

According to the report, the fiscal deficit was N417.75bn in January.

The report said accretion into the federation account decreased by 32.3 per cent in February relative to the preceding month, on account of the 60.2 per cent fall in oil revenue.

It added that the development led to the expansion of the overall fiscal deficit (provisional) by 22.8 per cent due to a 16.4 per cent surge in provisional FGN capital expenditure, and a 7.7 per cent fall in FGN retained revenue.

Hoodlums attack PDP members at Ogun election tribunal

Petition Tribunal had its inaugural sitting on Monday with hoodlums, suspected to be political thugs targetting and beating members of the Peoples Democratic Party on the court premises at Isabo, Abeokuta.

At the tribunal, the governorship candidate of the PDP, Ladi Adebutu, is challenging the emergence of Governor Dapo Abiodun of the All Progressives Congress as the winner of the March 18 governorship election in the state.

While the sitting commenced within the court, the political thugs stormed the tribunal premises with canes, otherwise known as pankere, in their hands and freely used them on the opposition members.

The thugs, who were not near the members of the tribunal, were seen attacking their political enemies with canes while policemen and security agents looked away.

The victims were beaten by these thugs and chased away.

Among those beaten was a former PDP governorship aspirant in the state, Segun Sowunmi.

The thugs descended on Showunmi while trying to gain access to the court premises and beat him.

Su***de bomber kills Taliban provincial gov

The acting governor of an Afghan province was killed by a su***de bomber Tuesday, officials said, months after the region’s police chief was killed in a similar attack claimed by the Islamic State group.

Security has improved dramatically since the Taliban stormed back to power in August 2021, ousting the US-backed government and ending their two-decade insurgency, but IS remains a threat.

The bomber drove a car filled with explosives into the vehicle carrying Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi — the deputy governor of northern Badakhshan before stepping up as acting governor last month — in the provincial capital Faizabad.

“The target of this attack was the vehicle carrying Nisar Ahmad Ahmadi,” said Muazuddin Ahmadi, the head of culture and information in the province.

The driver was also killed and six others wounded in the attack, which has so far not been claimed by anyone.

However, European Union chief, Charles Michel on Tuesday expressed shock at the attack on Ukraine’s Nova Kakhovka dam and pledged to hold Russia accountable for the “war crime” of destroying civilian infrastructure.

LASUSTECH proffers solution to plastic pollution

The Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu, has said plastic pollution is a serious global issue and needs to be drastically addressed.

This was made known during the 2023 World Environment Day, held at the school on Monday and organised by the College of Environmental Design and Technology, adding that actions being taken to protect the environment or even solve the already created problems were quite low.

World environment day is celebrated to encourage awareness and action for the protection of the worsening global environment.

The theme for this year as approved by the United Nations Environment Programme for this year’s (2023) World Environment Day is ‘Beat plastic pollution.’

While speaking on ‘Taking action: Harnessing innovation to beat plastic pollution,’ keynote speaker, Prof. Kolawole Raheem, revealed that Nigeria consumed about 1,250,000 tonnes of plastic annually.

He added that in Nigeria, of the 27.6m kilotons of municipal waste generated, about 13 per cent was plastic and only 14 per cent was collected for recycling.

He said, “The NCS has partnered with Trade Modernisation Project Limited, under a public-private partnership arrangement, to deliver the best-in-class technology for full automation of NCS processes to align with its peers around the world. The project would result in increased efficiency in NCS’ service delivery.

“Under the terms of the concession agreement, TMP will invest a total of $3.2bn over a 20-year period, which will generate more than $200bn in revenue for the Federal Government. Scientists seek commercialisation of research findings

Scientists under the aegis of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry, and the American Chemical Society, Nigeria chapter have stressed the need for the commercialization of innovative research results for the benefit of the larger society.

Speaking in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the first female President, Chemical Society of Nigeria, and current President, Federation of African Societies of Chemistry, Professor Gloria Obuzor said there is joy when you can commercialise your own innovative ideas.

She stated this on Monday during the American Chemical Society’s 8th annual symposium held at Watbridge Hotels and Towers with the theme, “Innovation in Chemical Sciences: From Discovery to Commercialisation’.

Obuzor lamented that efforts at commercialising research innovations in Nigeria were being hindered by factors such as equipment.

She said: “In Nigeria, so far we have not been able to turn paperwork to product. But Chemists are trying. Also, young Chemists who we call ‘Early Career chemists are trying. And we the older ones are doing our best to encourage, and mentor them on innovation commercialisation and as much as possible show them the way.

“Commercialisation does not mean you have to start very large. Just as the saying goes, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a step’. We are saying whatever they are able to achieve research-wise, they can turn it into products.

Florida: Mother-of-four Killed By White Neighbour After Confrontation

A yet-to-be-identified white woman, 58, has shot dead a black mother of four children, Ajike Owens, 35, in Florida, United States.

Owens was shot through the door in front of her son, 9, by a white woman who complained about her children playing outside but police have yet to make any arrest because of the 'stand your ground' law in the state, Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.

According to a civil rights attorney, Ben Crump, the deceased children were playing in a field near an apartment complex in Ocala, Florida, on Friday when her neighbour began yelling at them to get off her land and calling them racial slurs.

The children left the field but forgot their Ipad and went back to fetch it when the white woman threw it at one of the children and the screen cracked after hitting the boy.

Oodua groups back Tinubu on fuel subsidy removal

The Coalition of Oodua Self-Determination Groups has appealed to Nigerians to support the subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu saying that he took the right decision.

The leader of the Yoruba groups, Mr Razak Olokoba, while speaking in a joint press conference held at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, said Nigeria cannot continue to budget trillions of naira on fuel subsidy alone.

He said, “For this year, 2023, Nigeria budgeted N11 trillion of its oil revenue on subsidising petrol alone. This cannot continue. This is good money going down the drain, with little or nothing to show for it.

“This huge amount can be channelled into solving our several deficits, including, infrastructural, housing, education, healthcare and generally upgrading the quality of life for Nigerians. It will also help strengthen the naira.

Olokoba stressed that Nigeria’s economy depends 90 per cent on petroleum exports for its revenue and one-third of its Gross Domestic Product has been zero revenue from the sector, adding, “Tinubu said he inherited the assets and liabilities of the last regime. Nigeria currently owes massive local and foreign debts to the tune of N71 trillion.”
