Generator explosion ignites fire outbreak in FCT market

The fire incident in Karimo market in Abuja that destroyed good and many stalls started on Tuesday from an explosion from a generator, an eyewitness, Toluwani Ajayi, has said.

Toluwani, a resident of the market area and trader, claimed that goods worth millions of naira were destroyed.

Toluwani, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, spoke at the fire incident scene in Karimo, Abuja.

NAN reports that at about 8 p.m. on Tuesday, a large part of the market was razed by fire.

According to Ajayi, he and some traders noticed the fire after a generator fuel tank exploded and affected the shop of the generator owner.

“Initially, people still went about their normal businesses without knowing the fire would escalate to the point where people wouldn’t have been able to control the fire.

“That was when people started trying to rescue their goods,” he said.

He expressed concern about what he described as the attitude of those who were meant to help traders but took advantage of the situation and stole.

“It was so unfortunate to see people bugling, scavenging and stealing the goods of shops that were not gutted by fire.

“At night some hoodlums attacked us that they wanted to pack things from shops.

Gov. Diri Meets British Envoy, Seeks UK Investment In Bayelsa

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has promised that his administration would provide and guarantee the enabling environment for United Kingdom investments in the state.

Governor Diri gave the pledge on Monday when he met with the United Kingdom's High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mrs. Catriona Laing, in Abuja.

He requested the envoy to pave the way for British investments in the state in the areas of agriculture, transportation, education, maritime, aquaculture, ICT among others.

The governor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, said the relationship between the UK and Bayelsa predated the creation of Nigeria, which was further consolidated by the discovery of crude oil in commercial quantities at Otuabagi, a community in the state, by Shell in February 1956.

He however noted that despite Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) being one of the leading oil companies in the state and the long history of economic relations with the UK, Bayelsa had nothing to show as there was no other investment from UK companies in the state.

Diri sought the UK government's support and collaboration to establish a skills acquisition centre in the state that would train and empower women and youths in carpentry, refrigeration, solar power assembly, fashion designing and masonry.

Other areas are farming techniques for high-yield crops production, aquaculture, ICT as well as mechanical/electrical training.

His words: "With Bayelsa occupying a major portion of Nigeria's 853-kilometre coastline, the government intends to concentrate on fishery development, particularly deep-sea fishing.

"Bayelsa State has the best potential in Nigeria for the production of rice, cassava, yam, plantain, banana and palm produce. Our government is therefore embarking on a massive programme to train our youths in modern form of agriculture in order engage them in productive activities and divert them away from militancy, restiveness and criminal activities.

"Bayelsa remains one of the main crude oil and gas production states both onshore and offshore. The state provides the best setting for oil and gas investment. About 60 per cent of Nigeria's gas reserve is in Bayelsa and the government has resolved to create the best incentives and operating environment for all British investors through Public Private Partnership (PPP)."

Governor Diri also solicited support for undergraduate and postgraduate scholarship to Bayelsa students as well as inter-city collaboration with either the city of London, Liverpool or Manchester in order to enhance the state's transportation infrastructure, urban planning and waste management.

"I equally seek grants from the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) to support the state government's urban renewal efforts in the provision of potable water, rural electrification, construction of schools/learning materials.

"We are aware that the FCDO's Overseas Development Assistance through the Conflict Overseas Stability and Security Fund programme worked through the Social Democtatic Network, an NGO, in some communities in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of the state to carry out rice farming, which was successful. But this stopped since March 2020 and we wish to request that it resumes, this time, with collaboration with the state government for better results and continuity."

He commended the envoy for the warm reception and presented a copy of the interim report of the Bayelsa State Oil and Environment Commission (BSOEC) and an overview of its work, which he said highlighted the challenges Bayelsa people faced from decades of degradation of their environment.

In her brief response, the UK High Commissioner, Catriona Laing, thanked Governor Diri for the visit, saying the Mission encouraged collaboration with states and organisations that border on mutual interests.

Laing said the UK was interested in the economic development of Bayelsa, particularly in the area of sustainable agriculture and other areas that the governor highlighted.

BUHARI DRAGGED TO COMMONWEALTH FOR SANCTION

A Nigerian group has asked the Commonwealth to apply its charter to hold the Buhari government to account over the suspension of Twitter.

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) sent the urgent appeal to Patricia Scotland, secretary-general of the Commonwealth.

SERAP said Buhari’s action amounted to an abrogation and repression of human rights particularly the rights to freedom of expression, access to information and media freedom, as well as flagrant disregard for the rule of law.”

The organization asked Scotland to urgently consider recommending the suspension of Nigeria from the Commonwealth to the Heads of Government and to push the Buhari government to take concrete measures to respect and promote the Commonwealth’s values of human rights, transparency, accountability and the rule of law.”

SERAP deputy director Kolawole Oluwadare signed the appeal dated 5 June, 2021.

The organization said: “The Nigerian government has repeatedly demonstrated that it is not committed to protecting human rights. The Commonwealth should take a clear stand to ensure accountability of institutions, freedom of expression and access to information in Nigeria.”

“Nigerians can only freely participate in the democratic processes and shape the society in which they live if these fundamental human rights are fully and effectively respected, protected and promoted.”

“The suspension has the character of collective punishment and is antithetical to the Nigerian Constitution and the country’s international obligations. Nigerian authorities would seem to be suppressing people’s access to Twitter to exploit the shutdown to cover up allegations of corruption, abuses, and restrict freedom of expression and other fundamental rights.”

The appeal was sent to Mr António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations and Ms Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.

It read in part: “The Nigerian government has also called for the prosecution of those who violate its order suspending Twitter operations in Nigeria. This order for prosecution of Twitter users violates the legal rule that there should be no punishment without law.”

“The principle that only the law can define a crime and prescribe a penalty (nullum crimen, nulla poena sine lege) is a fundamental part of Nigerian constitutional jurisprudence.”

“The Commonwealth Charter recognises the right of individuals to participate in democratic processes, in particular through peaceful exercise of their freedom of expression and access to information, which apply both offline and online.”

“Respect for Commonwealth values is essential for citizens to trust Commonwealth institutions. The Commonwealth ought to take a strong stand for protection of human rights, transparency and the rule of law in Nigeria, principles which are fundamental to the Commonwealth’s integrity, functioning and effectiveness of its institutions.”

“Allowing citizens to freely exercise their human rights including freedom of expression and access to information without threat of reprisal or prosecution would enable them to contribute to society on issues of transparency, accountability, good governance, integrity and human rights.”

“Nigerian government has a legal responsibility under the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 [as amended] and international human rights treaties including the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to respect, protect and promote freedom of expression, access to information, and to ensure a safe and enabling environment for people to enjoy these rights.”

“The suspension of Twitter in Nigeria demonstrates the authorities’ determination to suppress all forms of peaceful dissent by the Nigerian people. There are well-founded fears that the human rights situation in Nigeria will deteriorate even further if urgent action is not taken to address it.”

“According to our information, the Nigerian government on Friday 4 June, 2021 unlawfully ordered all internet service providers to suspend Twitter in Nigeria. The suspension of Twitter operations in Nigeria followed the deletion of President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweets, which according to Twitter ‘violated the Twitter Rules.’”

“The suspension of Twitter in Nigeria is taking place against the background of repression of the civic space and harassment of media houses, and journalists who are targeted simply for performing their professional duty.”

“The suspension of Twitter has seriously undermined transparency and accountability in government. The lack of transparency undermines the rule of law and Nigerians’ ability to participate in their own government.”

“Lack of transparency and accountability, and the absence of the rule of law in Nigeria have contributed hugely to denying Nigerians their fundamental human rights. People have been targeted simply for using Twitter and peacefully exercising their fundamental human rights.

The Honourable Commissioner for Labour, Employment and Productivity, Hon. Stanley Braboke, in his remarks expressed delight about the Institute’s proposal to train Bayelsa youths, adding that their proposal necessitated the meeting for further discussions towards a fruitful collaboration.

He noted that the Ministry is saddled with the responsibility of training Bayelsa youths, and is therefore willing to collaborate with other agencies like it did with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) that organized a skills development programme for 105 youths in the state in the year 2020.

Dr. Torutein also disclosed that the Institute is affiliated to the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) and offers a diploma certification which is equivalent to the National Vocational Qualification by the NBTE, and equally grants students access to Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) loans and grants for Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

Kelechi who said the body has been following the matter since it occurred in October last year said the institution has restored public confidence by ensuring that appropriate sanction was meted out to perpetrators of crime, especially in the case of r**e.

She added, “This action by the institution is a bold statement and it would serve as a deterrent to others. We also commend the VC for keeping to his words of ensuring justice for the r**e victim.”

OSINBAJO CALLS FOR RESPONSIBLE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, on Friday, called on media executives to use their influence toward seeking ways of achieving a consensus on responsible use of social media.

Osinbajo gave the charge at the celebration of the “Life and Times of Departed Media Leaders: An Afternoon of Tributes”, held on Thursday Lagos.

“We are in an age of technology where the dissemination of news had completely been democratised by the media environment, which was once the preserve of state and corporation.

“The very meaning of the term media owner has changed and no longer refers to people with the profile of those who have studied journalism.

“In this era of citizen journalism, everyone now has a voice, whether through blogs, website or online publications among others.

“The democratisation of information, unleashed by the information age, has also introduced related risks with serious implications for economic and social-political stability,’’ the Vice president said.

He noted that indigenous and private interests now control means of information dissemination that was once the exclusive prism of corporation and government who we could easily hold accountable.

“These capability is increasingly used in all sorts of malign doings by those who abhor ill intent.

“Fake news is being trafficked on a scale that is capable of warping the perception of reality by huge numbers of people and inducing social conflict.

“I believe that media leaders must use the considerable influence that they have to seek ways of achieving a consensus on the responsible use of social media.’’

Osinbajo said that Nigeria was not a perfect country and had its own challenges.

He, however, noted that the cure for the country’s imperfection was certainly not in destruction nor a heatless descent into anarchy.

“We all have a share in the much-needed work of rebuilding, redesigning, reforming and healing our nation.

“Creating a commonality of purpose in a culturally diverse society is challenging the world over.

“However, nation-building is not the sole preserve of politicians and government.

“In fact, it is just as much a task for civil society, of which the media is an important member,’’ he said.

Osinbajo said that the relationship between the media and the government was part of the natural creative tension that must exist between institutions arising from different mandates.

“However, those of us who govern must do so with the understanding that power is a public trust and it is your calling as journalists to invigilate us and hold us accountable.

“I urge you to do so relentlessly, fairly, and unapologetically because when we are most true to our respective callings, our democracy is perfect.’’

The vice president pointed out that “what should occupy our minds today is whether we are building up our country or whether we are intent on tearing it down’’.

He said that that was a question that we must ask ourselves in every sphere of human endeavour because there is really only one divide at this point.

Ekiti street sweepers protest N5,000 payment, demand minimum wage

Street sweepers on the payroll of the Ekiti State government, on Tuesday, took to the streets of Ado-Ekiti over poor monthly remuneration.

The street sweepers said the N5,000 monthly stipends being paid by government, was paltry and could no longer sustain them under the present economic situation.

The protesting workers also demanded immediate implementation of the N30,000 minimum wage for members that can be in tandem with the current economic realities of the country.

They flaunted placards with the inscriptions: ‘Stop Paying Lip Service to Our Plights’, ‘N30,000 is the acceptable Minimum Wage By Law’, ‘Governor Kayode Fayemi, Please Come to our Rescue’, ‘N5,000 is not acceptable Again’, ‘Our Wage Can’t Take Us Home, We Want Living Wage’, among others.

Addressing journalists at Fajuyi Park where the protest kicked off, Mrs Titilayo Faweya, said they were propelled to undertake the protest to demand for what is right and just for members.

Faweya added that they acted based on the promise made by Governor Kayode Fayemi in 2018 while seeking reelection that he would increase their monthly take-home that was slashed by the immediate past government.

“The reason behind this action is that we are not being treated well, we are not fighting Governor Kayode Fayemi or disgracing his government, but we are confronted with the reality and we have to act to prevent us from dying in silence.

“We are collecting a sum of N5,000 monthly when a congo of garri is N700 and that of rice N1,000. How can many of us cope with these terrible situations?.

“Many of us are widows, in fact, we are really suffering. They promised that things will change, but we are not seeing the signal.

“All we are getting are promises upon promises. It is time for us to get what is commensurate to our efforts in terms of payment”, she said.

Also lending her voice, Mrs Nike Alatise, revealed that they started the street sweeping job in 2003 with N2,500 monthly salary before it was increased to N5,000.

“Many of us have spent close to 20 years on this job. When Governor Fayemi was campaigning, he promised that he would look into our welfare. Some of us are widows, some are living in rented apartments. How do we survive with this paltry amount?

“Our job is tedious and things are difficult for us. To survive is not easy and what we want is a sum of N30,000 monthly stipend that is in tandem with the N30,000 minimum wage already signed into law in Ekiti”, she posited.

But the Commissioner for Environment, Barr. Iyabo Fakunle Okiemen, said all the demands of the protesting workers have been taken for onward delivery to Governor Fayemi.

“I have met with them, we have addressed them and got all their demands, so that I can take to Governor Fayemi for necessary action”, she stated.
