I’m leaving no inheritance for my children, says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday identified training and education as the best legacies he has given to his children while raising them. He foreclosed leaving behind for them any inheritance.
The President spoke when he paid Sallah homage to the Emir of Daura, Dr. Faruk Umar Faruk, at his palace in Daura, Katsina State. Buhari’s advice was contained in a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity Mallam Garba Shehu

He urged parents to inculcate the right values, including the fear of God in their children, respect for constituted authorities and living a purposeful life through continuous education.

The President also charged young folks to seek education, not for government jobs, which are unavailable, but to arm themselves with skill and ability to fight poverty and to meet the needs of the 21st Century.
Buhari said more time should be given to the coaching of the future leaders, with basic knowledge of moral values, as the fast changing world, driven by new technology, would be more competitive and demanding.

The statement reads: “I was locked up for more than three years, after leading the country. At that point, I realised and I told my children that your net worth is what is in your head not what you have acquired in life.

“My focus has always been on training the children to be relevant wherever they find themselves. I told my children, particularly the girls, that they can only get married after getting a first degree.

Lewandowski arrives for pre-season medical at Bayern

Robert Lewandowski arrived for his pre-season medical at a Munich hospital along with other Bayern stars on Tuesday, even as Barcelona continued to be linked to the Polish striker.

At the end of May, Lewandowski said “it is certain that my story with Bayern has come to an end.”

Barcelona have expressed an interest in the 34-year-old striker, twice voted FIFA men’s player of the year.

“We have made an offer for the player, we are waiting for the response, we will see if it is positive,” Barcelona president Joan Laporta said on July 7.
According to German media, Barcelona made an initial offer worth a guaranteed 40 million euros but have since increased it.

On Tuesday, Lewandowski arrived by car at the city’s Barmherzige Brueder hospital, preceded by German internationals Manuel Neuer, Thomas Mueller and Leroy Sane.
The medical preceded the start of pre-season training in the afternoon.

He joined Bayern in 2014 and has scored 344 goals in 375 competitive matches and broke the Bundesliga single-season scoring record.

Lewandowski won the Bundesliga in each of his eight seasons with the club as well as the Champions League, the Club World Cup and three German Cups.

He has one year left on his Bayern contract.

“A contract is a contract,” Bayern president Herbert Hainer said.

On Saturday, the German champions will hold the official presentation of their squad at their Allianz Arena.

Muslim-Muslim ticket: Delta APC chieftain quits party

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Delta State, Air Vice Marshal Frank Ajobena (retd.), has quit the party in protest against the decision of the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to settle for a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

The retired Air Force chief, who is also a national caucus member of the APC described the Muslim-Muslim ticket as “the highest level of insensitivity to the Christian faith in the country.”

This was contained in a statement issued by the APC chieftain, copies of which he made available to journalists in Warri on Monday.
AVM Ajobena, who was the first Military Administrator of Abia State, noted further that it was inhumane for such a decision to be taken by Tinubu, whom he said, he respected so much.
The statement read partly, “Tinubu is not my enemy, I am not against him. But let’s call a spade a spade. It is not my character to be a double agent, I am not pretending; even though I like the APC, the right thing should be done.

“The decision could be described as one that portrays arrogance and total disrespect to us, Christians, in the APC.

“The latest development portrays us as a people who can easily be bought over with money. Such an action is a minus to our democratic system. In what capacity will I be serving in his campaign train? As a slave?

“A man must stand for something, else will fall for anything, hence, I am quitting”.

State chairmen reject Wike’s camp anti-Ayu plot

State chapters of the Peoples Democratic Party have rejected calls by loyalists of the Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike for the sacking of the National Chairman of party, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, over the brewing crisis in the party.

Asking Ayu to step aside, they said, would affect the party’s chances of winning the 2023 presidential election.

Embittered by the loss of the vice-presidential slot to Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, the pro-Wike camp had accused Ayu of supporting the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, who allegedly failed to follow democratic practices in his selection of his running mate.

Chairmen of the party in Plateau, Delta, Kaduna, Benue, Ekiti, Katsina, Zamfara, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Gombe and Cross River states, in separate interviews with The PUNCH faulted the call for the immediate resignation of Ayu.

They said although like Atiku, Ayu is a northerner; he could only resign after the PDP’s victory at the 2023 presidential poll. While canvassing for the zoning of the party offices for equity, the Edo State PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbeme hinted that this should be done after the presidential poll.

According to him, the party is sorting out several issues, noting that the clamour about zoning would also be resolved.

He said, “We definitely have a presidential candidate who is from the North who has not become the President. I think if we have an elected president on the platform of our party, it becomes glaring that the national chairman of the party should come from the South.

“While I strongly support fairness because if there is no fairness and sense of justice, that is a problem. However, we ensure our presidential candidate wins next year’s election before we take this step.”

The Chairman of the PDP in Kaduna State, Felix Hyat kicked against any change of guard in the party ahead of the 2023 general elections.

UPDATED: I prefer younger running mate – Peter Obi

The Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, on Wednesday, opened up on his choice of running mate, saying he preferred a younger person as vice-presidential candidate.

The former Anambra State governor stated this while featuring on Arise TV Morning Show.

He added that he prefers a younger person who has something to offer to complement his ticket rather than recycling old hands who had been in the government before now.

When asked to clarify social media rumours that he had picked a businessman and politician, Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, as his vice-presidential candidate, Obi noted that though consultations are ongoing, he was yet to pick a running mate.

He said, “We’re talking to a quite number of people and Baba-Ahmed is a capable hand and I wish he is the one. But I wish I can work with somebody who is more younger.

“I prefer younger people with fresh ideas who have a lot to offer rather than recycling old hands. I want a competent person and I am building a formidable team.

“I want people who can look me in the eye and disagree with me during cabinet meetings. People who have their own minds and ideas. If you agree with me in three meetings then you are gone because that means you don’t have your own ideas. I want people and cabinet members who can say ‘Mr. President, you are wrong’.”

On when he will release his manifesto, he said rather than a manifesto, he had practiced all that he is preaching and the records are there for Nigerians to verify.

“How can I hire professors to write or draft policy documents for me that I don’t even believe in?

“I have replicated all that I am promising Nigerians before. It would be the same thing. What I did in Anambra and what I achieved is what we will replicate on a larger scale. We want Nigeria to become the engine of production,” the presidential candidate said.

The PUNCH had reported that gunmen attacked the Custodial Centre in the Kuje area council of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja Tuesday night.

During the attack which lasted hours, some inmates were said to have escaped.

The Kuje prison is famous for holding high-profile inmates and suspects, including former governors and ministers.

According to officials, the facility houses over 900 inmates.

“We have not seen him today. He didn’t also come for Subhi (early morning) prayer as usual. But I don’t know what is happening,” a source in the prison told our correspondent.

Another official, who preferred anonymity, said that the whereabouts of Kyari remained unknown to him as of 09.30am.
“I am sure he is not missing and he didn’t escape. But I don’t know where exactly he is,” the official said.

El-Rufai best choice as Tinubu’s running mate – Group

A group, Tinubu Support Organisation, has endorsed the Kaduna State Governor, Malma Nasir El-Rufai, as the best choice of running mate for the All Progressives Congress’ presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The TSO said it arrived at the decision after its consultative meeting with critical stakeholders of the APC in the North-West geopolitical zone of the country.

The group noted that the APC had many outstanding individuals among its leaders that could serve as Tinubu’s running mate but the North-West, as the single largest voting bloc in Nigeria, should be allowed to produce the next Vice President.

The Director-General of the Tinubu Support Organisation, Aminu Suleiman, while briefing newsmen in Kaduna on Monday, said the choice of running mate was a critical success factor for the victory of Tinubu.

He said, “We are glad that the APC has many outstanding individuals among its leaders. But, having assessed all the options, it is the view of the TSO that the APC’s candidate for the VP should be chosen from the North-West, the single largest voting bloc in Nigeria.

Source: Punch

“After due consultation with critical stakeholders, especially in the North-West, it is of the fact that El-Rufai is Asiwaju’s best choice for Vice President,” Suleiman said.

According to him, the Tinubu Support Organisation was working tirelessly for the election of Tinubu as the next President of Nigeria, adding that it believed that the choice of running mate was a critical success factor for the victory of party’s candidate.

Attempted arson: Security agencies take over Bauchi Assembly

The crisis that engulfed the Bauchi State House of Assembly has taken another dimension as arsonists failed in an attempt to burn down the Complex.

It was learnt that the arsonists, whose identity and number had yet to be known, attempted putting fire on the Assembly complex Sunday night.

But for the quick intervention of security agencies, they would have succeeded in their mission.

This compelled combined team of security comprising men of the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Department of State Security, and the Nigerian Army, to take over the complex.
The Special Adviser to the Bauchi State Governor on State and National Assembly Liaison, Sani Burra, confirmed the incident to journalists on Monday in a terse message.

He said: “Assalamu alaikum! Sir, just to inform you that some unknown persons last night had attempted to burn the Hon. House (Bauchi State House of Assembly) Complex.

“As a result of which security agencies have taken over the place to avoid breakdown of law and order. This is to avoid (prevent) the journalists from giving wrong side of the story please.”

Serena’s career at a crossroads after Wimbledon defeat

With her 41st birthday just months away and without a Grand Slam title since 2017, Serena Williams faces searching questions over her future after a painful first-round Wimbledon exit.

The American was back on Centre Court on Tuesday after a year away from singles tennis but it was a miserable return to the scene of some of her greatest triumphs.

The 23-time major winner was cheered as she entered the court and supported throughout by a crowd desperate to see her recapture former glories against unseeded Harmony Tan of France.

But she looked a pale shadow of her former self, making 54 unforced errors in an uncharacteristically sloppy display that ended with a tame forehand dumped into the net.

Despite her lack of form and fitness, Serena, who lost 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (10/7), looked to have the match in her grasp at various points.

She served for victory when 5-4 up in the decider and even in the tie-break raced into a 4-0 lead before her game fell apart.

Putting a brave face on her defeat, the American said it was “definitely better than last year”, when an ankle injury forced a tearful exit in her first-round match against Aliaksandra Sasnovich.

“I don’t know,” she said. “Who knows? Who knows where I’ll pop up?”

Questioned as to whether she would be happy if the defeat by 115th-ranked Tan was her final memory of Wimbledon, she said: “Obviously not. You know me. Definitely not.

“But today I gave all I could do. Maybe tomorrow I could have given more. Maybe a week ago I could have given more. But today was what I could do.”

Bank honours Delta poly worker for returning excess cash

A worker at Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Mr. Excellent Ugbune, has been honoured by the Oghara branch of the United Bank for Africa for his display of patriotism in returning excess cash paid to him by the bank’s Automated Teller Machine.

The bank, in its appreciation letter to Mr. Ugbune, copies of which were made available to journalists in Warri, applauded the polytechnic worker “for his show of honesty and patriotism exemplified” in returning the excess cash paid to him by their ATM.

The statement read partly, “You have proven to be a truly loyal and patriotic customer of our great bank and this honest gesture has gone a long way in putting you on our list of most honoured and respected customers.”

Reacting to the development, the Rector of Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe-Oghara, Professor Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri commended Mr Ugbune for projecting the name of the polytechnic positively.

While hailing Ugbune for his demonstration of patriotism, the Rector hinted that the polytechnic’s congregation at its year 2022 sitting had approved the issuance of a commendation letter to Mr Ugbune.

Ayu not suspended as PDP chairman, says aide

Simon Imobo-Tswam, Special Adviser on Communication and Strategy to the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Iyorchia Ayu, has described as false a report (Not by The PUNCH) stating that his principal had been suspended from the position.

According to the report, the suspension followed an emergency meeting of the PDP National Working Committee.

The report claimed the Deputy National Chairman (North), Amb. Umar Damagun, had been appointed as National Chairman of the PDP, in an acting capacity.

Reacting, Imobo-Tswam said, “Even though we do not wish to dignify falsehood with a response, an official reaction is necessary in order to stem the tide of misinformation.”

This was contained in a statement, titled, ‘Ayu still PDP National Chairman,’ made available to newsmen on Wednesday.

It read in part, “Dr Iyorchia Ayu, the PDP National Chairman remains the PDP National Chairman.

“Dr Ayu took a well-deserved, two-week leave on 21st June 2022. He will be back next week to resume duties, specifically on July 6, 2022.
“A stickler for due process, Dr Ayu formally handed over to the Deputy National Chairman (North), Amb. Umar Damagun, and the Deputy National Chairman has held forth admirably since that day.

“It was in that acting capacity that he (Damagun) today, presided over the inauguration of the Osun State Gubernatorial Campaign Council, headed by the Executive Governor of Bayelsa State, H.E. Douye Diri

“If not that the authors of the mischievous and baseless Facebook posts were out to serve nefarious interests, they would have heard when the acting national chairman, Amb. Damagun, said during the ceremony today: “On behalf of my able National Chairman, Dr Iyorchia Ayu, I hereby inaugurate you.”

“The general public is, therefore, advised to ignore the mischievous social media publications as they are purely the work of mischief makers and idle minds.”

Nigeria Political Narrative: NLC, TUC pledge support for LP, Obi

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria on Tuesday pledged to support, campaign and do everything within their powers to ensure that the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi, wins the 2023 presidential election.

The NLC and TUC Presidents, Ayuba Wabba and Quadri Olaleye, made the pledge at the Pascal Bafyau Labour House and TUC Secretariat, Abuja, respectively.

Speaking to labour leaders and members who gathered for the 10th anniversary lecture in honour of Late Pascal Bafyau on Tuesday, Wabba stated that Obi is “among the finest Nigerians and the first presidential candidate of the Labour Party to be recognised by the labour centre.”

He went on to say that NLC is solidly behind the LP and would fully mobilise to ensure the victory of the party come 2023.

He also recalled that the workers’ unions have realised that strikes and protests alone cannot change the narratives in Nigeria, especially in regard to workers’ welfare and fair treatment of the working people, “hence labour must venture fully into politics and work hard to support candidates whose mantra will make life better for our members and Nigerians at large.”
On his part, Olaleye said Obi is a face among the presidential candidates all labour unions are ready to work with, and that the entire labour movement has accepted, adopted and would support, and ensure workers massively vote for him in the 2023 presidential elections.

He further said that the Labour Party is stronger and more formidable, adding that the party has a widespread structure, as there is a worker and member of either TUC and NLC in every family across Nigeria.

Obi said his visit to the leadership of the two labour centres was not to campaign but for a courtesy call to honour the organised labour on whose party and interest he is seeking Nigerians’ vote in the 2023 general elections.

Supreme Court crisis: NBA wants ex-CJN probed, Ariwoola sworn in, workers demand autonomy

A few hours after resigning from office, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, lawyers, civil right groups and some branches of the Nigerian Bar Association on Monday called for the probe of the erstwhile Chief Justice of Nigeria, Ibrahim Muhammad.

They unanimously said that the allegations against the former CJN should not be swept under the carpet.

Muhammad’s resignation was made public on Monday morning. According to reports, he tendered his resignation on the grounds of ill-health, barely a week after 14 Supreme Court Justices, in a joint petition, levelled grave allegations of maladministration and financial impropriety against the Bauchi State-born jurist.

The news of his resignation caught the nation unawares on Monday morning as his media aide, Ahuraka Isah, who initially denied it, subsequently confirmed the development.
The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), swore in the next most senior justice, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, as the acting CJN at the Council Chambers of the State House, Abuja.

The President, who noted that he received the resignation letter of the outgoing CJN with mixed feelings, conferred upon Muhammed the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger.

In an unprecedented development in Nigeria’s judicial history, the Supreme Court justices had in a leaked letter, accused Muhammad of abandoning his responsibilities and diverting funds meant for the running of the Supreme Court.

New planned fuel price hike, queues persist

Oil marketers on Thursday said they had escalated their call for an increase in the pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, to the Federal Government, as the current cost of the commodity was no longer sustainable.

Also, PMS transporters confirmed that they had resumed operations in full following last week’s raise in the freight rate being paid by the Federal Government for the transportation of petrol nationwide.

Amidst the call for petrol price hike and the full resumption of operations by transporters, the queues by motorists for PMS in Abuja and neighbouring states grew longer on Thursday.

The Deputy National President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Zarma Mustapha, told our correspondent that the Federal Government had been put on notice concerning marketers’ intentions to increase petrol price.

The HouseOf Representative probe 12-year remittances, withdrawals from Ecological Fund

The Reps has resolved to investigate remittances to the Ecological Fund and withdrawals from the account between 2010 and 2022, alleging mismanagement of funds by the beneficiaries.

The House has mandated its Committee on Ecological Fund to “investigate the total consolidated mandatory accruals into the Ecological Fund from 2010 to March 2022,” adding that the committee should equally “evaluate the disbursement of the Ecological Fund in line with the provision of the 1999 Constitution from 2010 to March 2022.”

The committee is also to “investigate the utilisation of the Ecological Fund by benefiting government’s departments and agencies (MDAs) from 2010 to March 2022 and establish infractions (if any).”

To establish these facts, the House asked the committee to conduct public hearings with all the major stakeholders on the effective and efficient utilisation of the Ecological Fund and report back within six weeks for further legislative action.

These resolutions were sequel to a motion moved by a member of the House, Femi Bamisile, titled ‘Need to Investigate the Total Consolidation Accrual and Utilisation of Ecological Fund.’

Fuel Scarcity Worsens Daily, Black Market Booms At Individual Price Per Litre

We can’t justify subsidy removal, Western countries subsidising fuel too – Buhari
Scarcity of fuel worsened in Lagos, the Federal Capital Territory and in other states of the country on Tuesday, motorists spending whole day queuing for fuel at filling stations.

For oil marketers, the solution to the worsening fuel queues across the country is for the Federal Government to approve an increase in the pump price of the commodity.

Although some marketers had already raised the price of fuel in their outlets, they admitted that the move had not been approved by the government, noting that dealers could be sanctioned for selling above the regulated rate.

The approved pump price of Premium Motor Spirit, popularly called petrol, is N165/litre, but marketers are currently kicking against this rate, saying that it is no longer sustainable going by the global crisis in the energy sector.

A retail outlet located in the Kubwa Village Market, Abuja, dispensed petrol at N195/litre to motorists and still had queues.

Heavy fuel queues were seen in the few filling stations that sold petrol at the approved rate on Tuesday. Some of them included: the NNPC close to Gwarimpa on the Zuba-Kubwa expressway, Total filling station opposite the headquarters of NNPC, Nipco filling station on Zuba expressway, among others.
“The solution to this crisis is to increase petrol price and have it approved because the cost of diesel used in transporting these products to retail stations has risen from about N250/litre a few months ago to around N850/litre currently,” the Deputy National President, Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Zarma Mustapha, told one of our correspondents.

The IPMAN official explained that the widespread queues in Nigeria were related to the global energy crisis that had dragged on for about four months since the Ukraine/Russia war started.
