NEVER MINE
CHAPTER 3

They say love is blind and indeed I was blinded by his love. I had fallen in too deep there was no coming out. I had never loved anyone the way I loved Thomas. Thinking about him made me smile like a crazy person. I don’t know how it was possible to love a person so much. I still don’t understand how Thomas was the only thing I could think about. It is as if my life now revolved around him. It is as if I couldn’t breathe without him.

I was going crazy. I wanted to always be around him. I started lying at home just so I can see him. He was like a drug, my drug. I wanted to see him always. I always wanted to be in his arms. I wasn’t the only one crazy in love, he also loved me back. He told me he loved me and he proved he loved me.

“What’s wrong?” Thomas asked. We were at our regular meeting place, the big rock behind his house.

“Ten days until schools open.”

“What’s wrong with schools opening?” he asked, clueless of why it made me sad that schools were opening.

“Schools are opening meaning you have to go back to the city.” I didn’t want him to go. I knew he was going to forget about me as soon as he saw the beautiful city girls again.

He answered wearing a smile, “I will call you all the time and visit every weekend.”
“How are you going to call me when I don’t have a phone?”

He stroked my face with his fingers, “I’m going to get you a phone.”

“My mother would kill me if she finds it, where do I say I got it from?”

“Your mother doesn’t need to know about the phone. You will have to hide it,” he said.

“So you are going to buy me a phone?”

He smiled, “I would buy anything for you, my heart.”

Thomas knew how to make me happy. He just knew what to say and what to do. Phones were very expensive at the time but he was going to buy me one. I was one lucky girl and many girls in the village wished they were me. Even my friends Thando and Ayanda couldn’t believe the things I told them about Thomas. They thought I was making it up.

Later that day Nokuthaba came to call me from Thomas’s house. She also mentioned that Mother was back from the meeting that was held at the river. A meeting about digging boreholes around the village.

“You and your Thomas are starting to annoy me,” Nokuthaba uttered sullenly, “Can’t he bring you home on time?”

“How is that Thomas’s fault? I left home on my own.”
“He is making you lose your mind and I don’t like it. He seems to be the only thing that matters to you these days.”

“He is,” I mumbled.

“Ntombie schools are opening soon and your-so-literate Thomas should be helping you study instead of spending the whole day kissing you.”

“Why are you so angry today?”

She answered, “I am angry at you. You are spending too much time with him and you’re not doing your chores Ntombie. I am tired of covering for you.”

My sister was right, I was spending too much time with Thomas. Love makes one do the stupidest things and at the time one doesn’t see it because they will be blinded by love. I was starting to spend less time at home and more time with Thomas. My mother was starting to notice because I came back late from the river and sometimes I would miss supper.

I remember one day I went back home when it was a little dark and my mother hit the living hell out of me. My mother didn’t care how old one is, she believed in disciplining a child with a belt. And no matter how much she hit me I still denied that I had a boyfriend and the more she hit me the more I fell in love with Thomas. The more she told me to stay away from him the more I wanted to be close to him.

“Hey baby,” Thomas hugged me from behind and I flinched in pain. I had gone to see him when the previous day my mother had hit me and made me promise to stay away from him. “Are you okay?” he asked sounding very worried. “Don’t tell me your mum hit you again?”

“It’s nothing, I can handle it.”

He cupped my face, “I don’t like seeing you in pain.”

“It’s worth it. You are worth it.”

“You should go home early today, don’t want you getting in trouble because of me,” he said.

“My parents went to the city so we are good.”

“Still you should go home, you look like you’re in pain.”

I was in pain. My mother gave a good hiding for someone in her late fifties. Thomas carried me on his back all the way home. When I got home I found Nokuthaba sitting by the fire with Thando and Ayanda.

“Finally, she decides to come home,” said Ayanda.

“Hello, Ayanda. Hi Thando,” I sat next to Nokuthaba.

“The city boy’s girlfriend,” Thando laughed.

“His name is Thomas.”

“We know, you even call his name in his sleep. I bet you are going to die if he goes back to the city,” said Nokuthaba.
“Jokes on you, he said he will visit on the weekends and he’s going to buy me a phone. I brought chocolates so you better be nice to me.”

“I also want a boyfriend like Thomas,” Ayanda shifted closer to get the chocolates.

My parent were going to be gone for four days and they asked the neighbor to watch over us while they are away. I didn’t see a need because I was 18 and Nokuthaba was 15, we were old enough to take care of ourselves.

“I promise I’ll be back in no time,” I said to Nokuthaba after begging her for about half an hour to let me go see Thomas.

“We both know you say in no time then take hours. You can’t leave me by myself. Mother said you must watch me.”

I locked my palms together, “I promise today I will be back sooner. Tell me what you want and I will bring it.”

“I want chocolates and Simba chips.”

I replied, “Consider it done! I will tell Thomas and you know he always has the nice stuff.”

“Don’t take long you know that old lady from next door is going to come to check on us.”

“I will be back before it’s dark,” I even swore on Mother.

I quickly fixed myself and then rushed out. Thomas was already waiting for me about two houses away from mine. I hugged him when I got closer. I enjoyed his hugs. Every hug felt like the first.

“I like your hoodie,” I said to Thomas. I loved everything he wore. I loved everything about him.

“This old thing but also one of my favorites.”

I said, “It’s pretty.”

“Do you want it? I can give it to you.”

He was just full of surprises, “If you want to give it to me I can’t say no.”

“Let’s go to my place so I can find another jacket then give you this one.”

We walked to his house which was not that far from mine. He invited me in but I insisted on staying outside. He told me that his parents were not around and that he was just going to get another jacket then we leave. I was scared that his parents might find me in their home but he assured me that they were not around and were not coming back anytime soon. I agreed.

He took my hand and led me to some room I assumed was his. Everything was neatly organized, the bed was neatly done and the whole room smelled like him.

“You can sit,” he said and I looked around but there was no chair. “You can sit on the bed, my love.”

I sat on the bed as uncomfortable as I felt. He opened one of the drawers and pulled out something then threw it on the bed. He then removed the hoodie that he was wearing leaving him with a vest that he eventually took off and I looked away.

He chuckled, “Come on don’t be shy.”

“We should go.”

“What’s the rush, we’ve only been here for less than two minutes,” he said walking to the door and I heard it lock.
“Don’t worry I am locking it so that no one can just walk in,”

“Thomas we should go.”

“I won’t do anything to you, Ntombie,” he promised.

He sat next to me, took my hand, and kissed it. I looked at him and faked a smile. I wanted to leave. I wasn’t comfortable and I had a bad feeling about being in his room.

“Relax, I won’t hurt you,” he whispered then lifted my chin and kissed me. ‘He won’t hurt me, he loves me’ is what my inner voice chanted as we were kissing. I could feel his hand rushing up my back. I was wearing a denim jumpsuit with a zipper at the back and the moment he touched the zipper I jumped.

“I promised I will be gentle,” he said.

“Gentle with what? Please don’t tell me it is what I think it is. I am not ready.”

He said, “Ntombie we are not kids.”

“Thomas I want to save myself. I can’t do this, I am sorry but I can’t.”

He stood in front of me and cupped my face, “You love me right? If you love me then prove it. I won’t hurt you Ntombie and I will be gentle. Please let me have you. I need something to remember you by when I go to the city.”

CHAPTER 2

Thomas was the nicest person I had ever met. He was kind and sweet. Every girl in the village wanted to be near him. He knew how to dress up well - that was my weakness back then. I loved a man that dressed well and God his shoes were to die for. One could tell they were expensive by just looking at them not forgetting his rich English ascent, I could listen to him talk all day.

Gorgeous, Beautiful, My heart is what he called me. We weren’t even together yet but he still called me that. I would smile by myself just thinking about him. He had never confessed his feeling for me but deep down I was hoping he would. Every morning he would walk with me to the river and help me with my bucket. When asked him why he did that and his exact words were ‘You make my day. Seeing your face makes my day. When I see you I know I will have a great day that’s why I always want to be around you.’

Two weeks went by and it was now our routine, him walking me to the river.

“My heart!” Thomas called me as he saw me passing by his house and heading to the river.

“Good morning Thomas.”

He snatched my empty bucket from my hand, “Tell me, did you dream about me last night?”

Always! I dreamt and thought about him all the time but of course, I never told him about my dreams so I answered, “I can’t remember what I dreamt last night.”

“Well, I still remember my dream. You were my wife and I was your husband.”

Thomas made me blush so much that I would bite my fingernails when around him. The moment he said that I wanted to bite off all my fingers. To not show him how much effect his presence had on me, I would just cover my face with my palms.

“I was your wife?”

He nodded, “You were my wife and we had two beautiful girls that looked like you.”

“I see.”

“Can I see your pretty smile?” he removed my hands from my face. “That’s better. Now I can see your pretty face.”

“How is it like in the city?” I changed the subject.

He answered without hesitating, “You will find out when we go there.”

“We?”

“Yes, I will take you there one day, for a day or two,” he answered.

I had never been so excited in my life. Thomas and I were not even together and his promise to take me to the city made me happy. I had always dreamt of going to the city. Thomas and I continued walking to the river. Funny, I never cared what people said or thought about me. Maybe it is because a part of me knew that Thomas was just a friend. A friend I liked so much.

“Ntombikayise,” Thomas stopped walking and held my hand, “I know this feels sudden but I like you, a lot. Can you do me the favor of letting me be the man in your life?”

“You want to be the man in my life?”

“Yes, my heart,” he answered, “Please give me the chance to make memories with you and make you happy.”

When he said that, my heart was playing rope in excitement. I wanted to scream badly but I kept my cool to not sound too crazy. I looked down and closed my eyes with my fingers crossed that it wasn’t a dream.

“Hey, don’t be shy,” he lifted my chin making me look at him. At that point, I couldn’t even look at him or keep eye contact. “Talk to me, Ntombie.”

I wanted to say yes. I wanted to say I would love to be his woman but the words wouldn’t come out. I was too shy to even say anything.

“Ntombie look at me,” he requested and I shook my head. “Come on my heart don’t be like that and you are going to get in trouble at home if we just stand here.”

I exhaled heavily, “Can I think about it?”

“Of course, you can take all the time you need and I hope you don’t mind that I do this,” he shifted closer and wrapped his arms around me. For a second I froze. Thomas has never been that close to me. I had never wanted to be so close to anyone as I did that day. I didn’t want him to let go. I loved how being in his arms made me feel.

He let go of me, “See you around, my heart.”

I watched him walk away and waited for the time when I wake up because that had happened before but this time I wasn’t dreaming. I could still smell his cologne on me. I always wondered how he managed to smell so good in the morning.

****

“Are you sure you haven’t lost your mind?” my sister Nokuthaba asked. I was born in a family of two girls and one boy with me as the middle child.

“Losing who?”

She said, “Losing your senses. You have been brushing your hair for some time now and you are smiling by yourself.”

“He asked me to be his girlfriend.”

Nokuthaba rolled her eyes, “Who?”

“Thomas! He asked to be the man in my life.”

“Thomas the city boy?” she questioned also as excited as I was.

“Yes, he chose me of all the girls in the village. How cool is that?”

“And what did you say?” she asked curiously.

“I told him that I’m going to think about it but I am definitely saying yes,” I screamed and Nokuthaba joined in.

The door opened and we quickly composed ourselves. Mother walked in, “What are you two screaming about? You are making a lot of noise. I can hear you from the gate.”

“We are sorry,” I answered with a low voice.

“And you Nokuthaba, why haven’t you bathed? You should follow your sister, can’t you see she baths in the morning like a normal girl should. A girl child should bathe twice a day, early in the morning and before she sleeps.”

Nokuthaba secretly pinched me because we knew the lecture was coming. Mother shook her head and said, “I used to be like you, thinking my mother was crazy.

I answered, “Mama we don’t think you are crazy.”

“Nokuthaba go bath,” she commanded and Nokuthaba dragged her feet leaving the hut. She then sat on the bed and reached for my hand, “You are 18 now and I know it’s that time when you girls start having a boyfriend.”

“I don’t have a boyfriend mama, I swear.”

She chuckled, “I didn’t say you have one and you’re allowed to have one, you are old enough. But that doesn’t mean I am permitting you to let boys get all over you.”

I nodded.

She added, “The key is respecting yourself, respect yourself and men will respect you too. No man wants a loose woman.”

I nodded again.

She said, “Please my child keep your legs closed. Keep your legs closed and save yourself for your husband. And before you think of bringing a life into this world think about our situation. Do you want your child to grow up struggling?”

“No!” I answered although I had no idea how we had reached the bringing lives subject. She then started telling me about womanhood and men.

Later that day, I met up with Thomas. He had sent a child to call me from my house. He looked and smelled good as always. I fell in love with him more and more every time we met. Our meeting was different that day because he hugged me again. Only if he knew the things he made me feel when he touched me. I had never felt like that about a boy my whole life.

“Did you think about what we talked about earlier?” he asked.

I nodded blushing, “I did.”

“And…what is your answer?”

I bit my lower lip and nodded.

“Is that a yes?”

I covered my eyes with my palms, “Yes, Thomas.”

“Thank you! Thank you!” he lifted me and spun me around. “You have just made me the happiest person on the planet. Thank you, Ntombie.”

“You are making me dizzy,” I giggled.

He put me down and cupped my face, “I love you Ntombie.”

“You love me?”

He nodded pulling me closer, “I love you and I promise to make you the happiest woman on this planet. I promise you won’t regret this choice.”

I blushed looking down and he shifted my chin up so I can look at him, “God, you have beautiful eyes I could stare at you all day.”

Just when I was still trying to process everything going on, he kissed me. I felt like I was floating. I felt invincible. I never thought being kissed would feel so magical.NEVER MINE

I never thought being kissed would feel so magical.
