The U.S. ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety after saying on Thursday that he was confident that a Russian ship under U.S. sanctions took aboard weapons from the Simon's Town base in December has tendered an unreserved apology for the error.
On his verified Twitter account, South Africa’s Head of Public Diplomacy Clayson Monyela disclosed that the government showed its displeasure to the statement credited to the US envoy but added that Ambassador Brigety at a meeting with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) admitted that he has crossed the line.
The US Diplomat after his apology added that the relations between the USA & South Africa are cordial, strong, and mutually beneficial, affirming his government’s commitment to continue to work together for the benefit of the people of the two countries.
He also made it known that the US is committed to using established diplomatic channels to raise whatever issue may arise in the management of the bilateral relations between the two countries.
International Relations and Cooperation Minister Naledi Pandor had while speaking to her US counterpart, Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated that the National Conventional Arms Control Committee has not approved any sale of arms to Russia related to the period and incident in question.
She also made it known that the US cannot drag South Africa into its sanctions against Russia thus the government of South Africa will not be bullied.
