SOCIAL MEDIA MARKETING CAN BE FRUSTRATING AT TIMES

I've seen a lot of businesses struggle with social media.

Some are handling all social media platforms with just one manager, some have created their page and are trying to post every day...it worked for the first few weeks, but now, what next? Everything seems static!

Some are getting zero profits from their investments in ads and overall marketing.

Sometimes it feels like there are just too many dead ends and frustrations, especially now that the whole buzz of Social media marketing that was there around 2017,2018… till maybe early this year is dying down. Was it all a farce?

Alright, Slow down. Let's get back to the basics.

Marketing didn't really change after the internet came. It's pretty much the same thing since the first man to sell something sold it. Yeah, there have been, and will continue to be changes in the dynamics, but the core will forever remain the same.

Let us start afresh. Imagine the internet was invented today... you've seen the future, you know all businesses should go there. How will you do that?

Here comes the dilemma of the average Small or micro business owner.

"how do I market my business on the internet?"

Just follow these steps and you'll be fine.

Step 1: decide which platform you're going to focus on. At most you should focus on two, except you have the finance to hire a marketing team.

Step 2: design your social media strategy or hire someone who can.

Follow and tweak your social media plan (strategy) until you're getting results.

This is basically what you need to get started. There's no other way around it yet. I've checked.

It's common knowledge that LESS THAN 10% OF PAID ADS ARE CLICKED ON

The irony however, is that a lot of Small Businesses today, rely so much on paid ads for likes, leads, sales or bookings... e.t.c. and that is wrong!

While paid ads are good, they are just mere tools that connect your audiences with your content.

What we see, instead, is that it is sadly the only weapon in the arsenal of many small businesses today. Kind of - No money for ads, No sales.

See, I have seen a post from a revered Media Buyer on Facebook, complaining that many businesses just bring their products to him to sell, without doing their background work. In his words - "Clients just want you to build them a business, not an ad"

Are we to talk about the resistance we are all growing towards paid ads?

For those who live in Lagos, you know how you get into defense mode whenever a stranger walks up to you and says "excuse me sir/ma, I want to ask you something…" In the same way, People are getting resistant to good ad copies!

This is largely because there are too many brands out there that are trying frantically to sell to them. And so, the initial reaction is, they "want to collect my money".

What To Do

That's why experts will advise you to use strategies like NURTURE MARKETING or SOCIAL IMC to build a relationship with your audience, then sell to them when THEY are ready.

However, Make no mistakes, except you have a network of relevant influencers that you can activate when you need to promote your content. You'll need to run ads.

Paid Ads Are Still Important.

So yes! After you've put your content out there, you may need to spend more to get them aware of the content.

In Conclusion,

I have written a few times about Social Media Strategy, it's importance and how they help improve your social media marketing campaign. They are all embedded in this hashtag - . Click on it to see them.

Without a Social Media Strategy, you're like someone who is going somewhere he/she hasn't gone to before, without a phone.

You'd surely get stranded

Creating a Social Media Strategy is the most important part of social media marketing. You've got to go into social media marketing with a game plan and a list of goals, or you’ll never achieve the ROI you’re looking for.

Once more, a Social media strategy is a summary of everything you plan to do and aim to achieve on social media, over a period of time- Usually a year or more.

Create a Social Media Plan for your Business

Whether you're selling stuff or you are in the knowledge business. Marketing on Social media doesn't have to be frustrating. You can get results on the go.

See, I'm not saying there won't be challenges on the way, I'm just saying it doesn't have to lead to frustration.

In your hunger for better ROI on your business' social media handles, you must have come across posts, courses or seminars that are about having a successful social media outing. For example, Headstart Africa's Monetize Summit.

But, in all that, have you heard of the importance of a social media strategy? Do you even know what a social media strategy is?

Read on.

A Social media strategy is a summary of everything you plan to do and aim to achieve on social media, over a period of time- Usually a year or more.

The proverb -"she who fails to plan, plans to fail"- in this context, has never been truer. Without a proper social media plan(strategy), you're setting yourself up for frustrations in the end.

Yes, You may get quick successes- sales, engagements or bookings. Whichever one it is, I bet those sucçesses will be short-lived. Like the fire on a single broomstick😂.

Here's what a social media strategy does for you.👇

With a social media strategy;
1. Everyone involved, understands the goals and activities
2. Every activity, such as posts, tweets graphics, links e.t.c helps you get closer to the desired goal
3. Plans can be adapted according to the resources available (Budget, time and all)

I don't want to stretch your attention so i won't go into explaining the above 3 things a social media strategy gives you. However, if you want further details on that, ask me, and I'll answer in the comment section.

What's the point of all these?

You need to ensure your business has a social media strategy. Atleast, It'll give you a 70% chance at success. If you're not sure of where to start, follow this hashtag . Everything I've ever and will ever write on social media strategy is, and will be embedded in the hashtag.

Thanks for your attention.

I'm Chukwuebuka John, I want to help you make the most of social media.

How To Use Hashtags (a step by step guide)

Hashtags are an ever growing, essential tool for social media marketing.
Click here to see what I wrote on its importance: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=166576695064531&id=105168307872037

Before we go into the Nitty gritty of the guidelines, let's do an overview, for context.

The pound symbol ( #) was first used as a hashtag by Chris Messina in 2007.
https://twitter.com/chrismessina/status/223115412?s=19
This was in a bid to convince twitter to use hashtags to group tweets. Hashtags have evolved in use since then.

Right now, You know how important keywords are to google? how that keywords helps a persons site/blog to be the first thing anyone sees whenever they search for anything related to those keywords? HASHTAGS are just that to social media.

If we learn to use it right, you know those feelings of frustration you get when you're not getting as much results - they'll reduce.

Hashtags can be characterised by their:

Popularity: How many people use it. If there are many people using it, it's popular.

Relevance: this is about ensuring that the hashtags are in sync with what you post and your brand identity.

Quality: This are hashtags that are highly targeted to a niche

Now, Let's get to the steps

Step 1: SEARCH: Search for Hashtags that people in your industry use. You can Go to Instagram, click on the search bar and type your hashtags. As you type, you'll get suggestions. Pick from the suggestions with the overview above in mind☝️

STEP 2: MONITOR SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS AND COMPETITORS: Check to see what hashtags your competition uses, so you can adopt or tweak them for better results.
*Caveat*: If your competition uses Hashtags arbitrarily, please pass. As In, IGNORE.

STEP 3: USE HASHTAGS TOOLS: This will help you see the overall popularity, recent popularity and trend for the month and week.
Don't sweat it. In my opinion, until you see the need for a hashtag tool, you'll not use it effectively. I'll suggest you first do it manually, then as the need arises, you go for the tool.

STEP 4: KNOW WHICH HASHTAGS ARE TRENDING: This is pretty clear right? let's move on.

STEP 5: USE RELATED HASHTAGS: After you've known which hashtags to use, check for related ones which might be more specific to your niche. They may help you reach a more targeted audience.

To cap it, I believe the almost non-existent "social media search" will be a thing in the future. we'll have Social Media SEO. Do you agree?

YOU SHOULD USE HASHTAGS

You can now increase your post reach on Facebook through Hashtags.

If you have a business page, you'll surely know of the frustrating feel of not reaching as many people or having to boost every post to get the required reach. Facebook has done something about it at last.

Facebook has been cold on hashtags. They first introduced it in 2013 after Hashtags had gained momentum on twitter. But it wasn't appealing enough for Facebook users; many people did not use hashtags.
Buzz sumo in 2016 did a research; they analysed more than a billion Facebook posts from over 30 Million brand pages and posts without hashtags saw more reach on average than those with tags. You could understand the cold feel towards hastags

That's until now,

With the recent development, you can reach more people. More than the number of followers you have on your page. You know what this means? With the right hashtags you won't need to heavily rely on Facebook's difficult algorithm or on paid ads to get your word out there.

All you need to do is learn how to use the Hashtags.

Here👇

1. Find Out What Hashtags To Use: Just like with Instagram, when you are confused on which hashtag to use, you type in the search bar, and the search engine will provide you with suggestions.

2. Use hashtags more often: I think this is pretty simple

3. Build Your Group Of Hashtags: Like they say, Consistency is key

However, this is a new development. We are still observing the results, and they look encouraging.

Making the most of social media marketing involves staying consistent and disciplined with an air of creativity. It will eventually add up.

I am Chukwuebuka John, I exist to help make the most out of Social Media for you.

Business Know Thy Audience

Most of our business pages are nothing more than an announcement board. Most get almost zero engagements.

It doesn't matter how many offers you give or how many stories you tell, your audience would just not budge.

Are we to talk of Facebook's algorithm that will continuously limit your reach, no matter when you post, except when you pay for ads?

Wait… before you go on venting your frustrations. Have you thought about the rules? Do you even consider Facebook's mission statement:

"To give people the power to build community and bring the world closer together."

This is the missing link.

Many businesses go about their social media marketing without regards to why the platform -- in this case, Facebook-- was created. It's an error. It's kind of like putting square pegs in round holes. Even in traditional marketing, before you sell anything, you first sell yourself,

On Facebook, you do the same (sell yourself) by connecting with your audience.

My counsel: Try your hardest to go personal with them.

To go personal with your audience, you need to KNOW them. Invest in Audience Research and watch your social media marketing boom.

I am Chukwuebuka John, a Social Media Strategist. I exist to help you make the most out of social media.

As time ticks on, every 24 hrs a new day emerges. This should give us hope.

The principle of day and night is not bigger than the love of God for us. If Day and Night hasn't failed, his love for us won't fail.

Face your day and month with this hope, and the universe will bow to you.

Happy New Month Excellencies and Excellencies in making

WHY WE POST

What if I told you that all the posts you've made on Social Media since your first log-in, were for either of this two reasons:

*Affiliation: to be seen as part of (fill in the blank)

*Persuasion: To impact someone else's decision.

Let that sink in. We'll get to why it matters to your business in a moment.

Have you ever felt frustrated that you're not getting enough actionable insights to refine your marketing activities, from your product reviews?

Knowing 'why people post' in relation to persuasion and affiliation will help you draw out insights from the comments.

So how do you use social media comments to refine your marketing? Here's the million dollar answer:

1. Focus on the particular features and attributes the comments indicate are appealing to your audience. These features and attributes usually provide insights to what's most important to your audience.
2. Use the insight to design the next generation of your products, or a new product altogether.

Isn't this valuable? Are you wondering where it came from?

My name is Chukwuebuka John. I am a social media strategist. I exist to make the most out of social media for your business.

Again, I hope you got value.

THE POWER OF IMAGES

I was almost tempted to title this "the mystery of images". But somehow, I think pastor's have trademarked the phrase😂.

Seriously though,

My background as a social media strategist, led me to research on how we (humans) relate with images. This happened because of a conversation I had with someone over her post.

People literally left her story which was captivating- she's a prolific writer- and focused on the picture she posted alongside.

This reminded me of a post I saw on Headstart Africa. I mean, the texts of the post were abysmal, but that didn't stop 'Headstarters' because the pictures spoke volumes. In fact, it had over 350 engagements.

HERE'S THE DEAL

"Images tell stories. Stories with which we identify and hold on because of our structural anxiety for seeking certainties." -- Sebastian guerrini.

And...

According to researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the human brain can process entire images in as little as 13 milliseconds.

MY INFERENCE

Though according to research, 78% of all mobile data will be video in 2021, I still believe the relevance of images in online marketing will never go away.

This makes apps like Canva and platforms like Pexels super relevant. Canva gives you the power to create great photos that impress your messages on the heart of your audience.

Let me know what you think in the comment section.

My name is Chukwuebuka John. I am a Social Media Strategist.

WHY ADD MORE?

Writing for Social Media is not the same as writing a book; an article for a news media, or an essay. Social media is dynamic. In fact, with social media Less is More.

Let me shock you:

According to research, The ideal word count for Facebook is 40. And that's because Posts whose words are within 40 have been found to get more engagements.

Truth is, writing is hard! If George Orwell can say it, who am I?😂 and the worst part is trying to put your ideas into a 40 word 'box'. mehn! That's gruelling.

So what do we do?

Opinion:

1. Limit word counts for every post to 150 words, max 200.. E get why.

2. Summarize your ideas in the first paragraph, and make sure your first paragraph plus headline are not more than 40 words. If you ask why I'd tell.

3. Structure your posts before you begin.

My only Fear is that it may stifle creativity.

I am Chukwuebuka John, a social media strategist.

To sell, Don't just talk, listen!

As brands, we find it hard to convert leads to paying customers because we don't listen to our leads. Listening is key to communication. And communication, or content in our context, is the soul of social media business. See, you pitch to get leads, but to convert leads, you listen.

What do I mean by listening? Good question.

You may have come across this quote by Aristotle in school or online,..or here and now.

“Man is by nature a social animal"

Think about it... Your audience are not avatars, they are human beings. And best believe - more than they want your products or services, they want to CONNECT with your brand.

Understanding this, will help you to make smart choices about content, making it effective in conveying your intended message.

Now, How do you listen?

1. Audience research
2. Think critically about your own service or product. What frustration does it solve? And who would be it's most relevant audience?
There's more, but let's move on.

The best alternative is to hire the service of a social media strategist.

My name is Chukwuebuka John and I am a social media strategist.

21/05/2020

I Chukwuebuka John, am a Social Media Strategist. Due to my crave for knowledge, I have an array of certificates from different online platforms, in courses that are relevant to social media marketing.

I am multi talented; naturally skilled at writing(stories and poems), music, drawing, logic, above average in maths and SHY.

--wondering why I added I'm shy? read to the end--

So, You can imagine my confusion when it came to choosing a career path. Which talent should I sacrifice for the other? I remained in my confusion until Providence brought Digital Marketing to me.

That was my 'Aha' moment. The Hybrid nature of social media made it a perfect fit for me! I could put all my talents(turned hobbies) to use, from copywriting to graphics...to Analytics...to Problem solving...to Social media SEO, there is a natural talent that fits.

When I'm not designing or implementing strategies to achieve social media goals, you'll find me playing the piano, playing chess, leading a team of tech enthusiasts, reading or watching TED talks on YouTube.

Fun fact: shy people are literally warriors behind the keypad.
