However, Amazon accounts for about 70–75% of all book sales, so for many authors, this isn’t a big problem. (And it can be mitigated through other platforms.)

So again, KDP is definitely not a scam. It’s the platform of choice for millions of independent authors and publishers.

There really isn’t a limit on the number of low-content books one can load through KDP to Amazon’s marketplace.
BUT - the inside-the-book blank pages wave has definitely come to an end.
KDP has cracked down on books that have more than two blank pages, so the joke book with the funny titles (what men know …) are no longer approved or accepted on the platform.
So essentially, if one wants to publish low-content books, one MUST have some content on all those pages.
Graph paper, lined paper, corners with artwork, etc., are how one gets around the ‘low-content’ restrictions.

Yes, it is OK to self-publish on Amazon, as a first time author. You will need to decide the format.

You really have only two options:

Print - whether it is paperback or hardcover, getting your book on Amazon is highly possible. Most self-published authors go with a paperback version, as it is more cost effective and more likely a potential buyer will get your book. Both CreateSpace and Kindle Direct Publishing are publishing options from Amazon.
Kindle - to get your book on Amazon as an electronic book (eBook) you’ll need to self-publish via the Kindle Direct Publishing platform. Some first-time authors choose publishing only in electronic format, to test the waters and see what type of readership they’ll attract. If the Kindle book turns out to be popular or sells well, then turning it into a paperback for fans is the next logical step.
Regardless of the option you choose, take this one additional step before publishing. Hire a seasoned editor, or at minimum, have a writer friend edit your book. Editing goes a long way and will make the book’s copy more readable, resulting in better reception by your target audience.

Amazon recently released figures saying more than 1000 authors were making 6 figures a year or more, as an Amazon Indie. I know some of them.

There are a series things you have to get right, in order to earn a decent living as an Indie author.

Write books people WANT to read. Its not good enough to be good literature, or anything else which suggests its a good book. People who see it must WANT to read all of it.
It must be presented in a way those who see it, are enticed into the sample, and choose to read the whole book. Cover, blurb, sample read, all have to be good, in a way which attracts readers.
The book must be launched in a way enough people buy it on day one, to get a good launch ranking, which gives it visibility in lots of areas on the Kindle site. Mailing lists are the best method, along with Facebook Groups and Pages.
It needs to be promoted the moment the book goes live. AMS ads to as close to 1000 keywords, including same genre authors and their performing books, which gives you added visibility, and creates diverse also-boughts giving you even more visibility. Ads are another skill, and writing them is often hard for authors. Marketing has to be learned!
As soon as a book is launched, write the next book. The faster you release, the more momentum you keep from book to book. Monthly releases are the best, but 6 weekly will work well, and 2 monthly will also. After that, you start falling off the charts, as Amazon actively push your book down as new books go up. Doing this is called being a full time author, and the people who write for 8 hours a day like a normal job, can put out quality books every month. Some do more.
Above all, what you write has to be something people WANT to read. And your opinion of your own book is not relevant.

Getting just 1 of the above things wrong, can doom your book to obscurity, and you to not making an income as a writer.

Making an income from Amazon publishing takes work, learning new skills, and adapting as the market changes every 6 months.

It can be done.
