UAE To Grant Residence Permit To Nigerians, Others For Remote Work

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Emirati Vice President and Prime Minister, announced via his Twitter handle.

The UAE has announced a residence permit for remote workers, approving a multiple-entry pathway tourist system for people of all nationalities.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, the Emirati Vice President and Prime Minister, announced via his Twitter handle.

He explained that the introduction of the new residency permit means that “any employee anywhere in the world can reside in the UAE to practice work remotely even if the company is not present in the country.”

“During a cabinet meeting I chaired, we approved a new remote work visa that enables employees from all over the world to live and work remotely from the UAE even if their companies are based in another country,” he said.

This decision comes in light of the work-from-home policy widely accepted due to the COVID-19 pandemic and aims to encourage workers employed around the world to relocate to Dubai.

The UAE government recently made its laws more flexible for foreigners, such as loosening alcohol restriction and allowing unmarried couples to live together. These measures have attracted more foreigners to the prime Gulf country and boosted its tourism industry.

In January, the government also announced that citizenship was being offered to foreign investors and other gifted professionals to boost its economy amidst the pandemic.

Nigerians denied visa on or after Jan 20, 2020, due to Trump ban can reapply for free — US

The US State Department has said most US visa applicants, who were denied because of former President Donald Trump's travel ban on 13 mostly Muslim-majority and African countries, can seek new decisions or submit new applications.

President Joe Biden overturned Trump's travel ban on his first day in office, Jan 20.

On Monday, March 8, the US State Department spokesman, Ned Price, said applicants who were refused visas before Jan. 20, 2020, must submit new applications and pay a new application fee.

Those who were denied on or after Jan. 20, 2020, may seek reconsideration without re-submitting their applications and do not have to pay additional fees, Price said in a Reuters report.

$2m and N17m was stolen from my palace during the crisis – Oba Akiolu

Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu has alleged that $2 million and N17 million were stolen from his palace during the crisis in 2020.

Speaking at the commissioning of the Glover Hall Memorial in Lagos on Wednesday March 3, Akiolu stated that the loss Lagos suffered during the crisis is so enormous than in any other part of the country.

The Monarch further said that those who committed the offence would not have done that if they knew the implication.

Akiolu said;

“I will support anything that will move Lagos forward. I have appealed to the Federal Government to assist Lagos with what we have suffered. The incident that happened here from October 20th to 23rd is so saddening.

“The destruction we suffered in Lagos is so enormous than in any other part of the country.

“Many buildings were burnt, including vehicles used to generate income. I can now say publicly that they stole away from my palace $2 million and N17 million.

“Those who committed the offence would not have done that if they knew the implication. But as a father, I won’t place any curse on them.”

According to reports, Salami ran into some herds and attempted to make a quick reverse but was caught by the attackers.

The attackers numbering about eight reportedly emerged from the bush, cut off one of her fingers and shattered her jaw with bullets.

The victim was said to have been taken to a few hospitals including the state-owned Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital but was rejected. She had to travel to the Lagos State Hospital, Ikeja, before she could get treatment.

Spokesperson of the command, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the incident then said three suspects had been arrested.

"Those people have a piece of land between Oru and Ago Iwoye. They went to inspect the land. One Alhaja who was going with them had excused herself with the promise that she would join them on the land," said Oyeyemi.

"On getting to the land, they discovered that some Fulanis were attacking a labourer hired to clear the land in question. Those people immediately ran to those in the neighbourhood and in the process, the Fulanis left the victim and took to their heels. Unknown to the Alhaja, on her way to join the people, the Fulanis laid in ambush for her and opened fire on the vehicle she was driving. The woman was hit by a bullet and the Fulanis, who perpetrated the crime, ran away.

"When the police were informed, they went to the scene and could not find any of them but they saw the cattle they left behind. The police, in conjunction with the local vigilante group and hunters didn’t allow the cattle to leave the spot. Around 10pm, three Fulani men came to the spot with the aim of taking away

Fayose seeks probe of sacked Service Chiefs

Former Governor of Ekiti state, Ayodele Fayose has asked for probe of service chiefs who were relieved of their jobs today January 26.

Fayose who accused the former service chiefs of serving themselves and their pockets, described their sack as a “step in the right direction.”

He tweeted;

Though coming after persistent pressure from Nigerians, President Buhari's removal of the Service Chiefs and their replacement is a right step in the right direction. It is yet another victory for the people of Nigeria.

The sacked Service Chiefs only served themselves and their pockets and can at best be described as "Disservice Chiefs" under whom Nigeria became completely insecured.

It is my call to the ICC and other relevant authorities that tenure of the "sacked" Service Chiefs should be investigated, most importantly human rights abuses and extra judicial killings under their watch and commands.

The new Service Chiefs should learn from their immediate predecessors and remember nothing lasts forever.

Biden administration revives plan to put Harriet Tubman on $20 bill after Trump's administration blocked the plan

The Joe Biden administration has revived plans to put Harriet Tubman on $20 bill note after the process was delayed under Trump's administration.

Harriet Tubman was a 19th-century abolitionist and political activist who escaped slavery, then took part in the rescues of hundreds of enslaved people, using the network of activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.

In 2016, Barrack Obama decided Tubman should replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill. But Donald Trump, who placed a portrait of Jackson prominently in the Oval Office, blocked the Obama plan.

Joe Biden has now revived it with White House press secretary Jen Psaki telling reporters on Monday the treasury was “exploring ways to speed up” the process and adding: “It’s important that our money reflect the history and diversity of our country.”

“The Treasury Department is taking steps to resume efforts to put Harriet Tubman on the front of the new $20 notes,” said White House press secretary Jen Psaki after a question from a reporter.

The president has also replaced the Jackson portrait in the Oval Office with one of Benjamin Franklin, who appears on the $100 bill.

Psaki also said specifics on a new timeline for introducing a redesigned $20 note with Tubman would be announced when finalized by the Treasury Department.

Donald Trump sets up "Office Of The Former President" in Florida

Former US President Donald Trump on Monday established an official post-presidency office in Palm Beach County in Florida.

"The Office of the Former President" will manage Trump's correspondence, public statements, appearance, and official activities, according to a press release from the office.

"Today, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump formally opened the Office of the Former President," the statement said.

It added, "The Office will be responsible for managing President Trump's correspondence, public statements, appearances and official activities to advance the interests of the US and to carry the agenda of the Trump administration."

"President Trump will always and forever be a champion for the American people," it further said.

The former President has remained silent since leaving the White House last week for his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach. He has been banned from Twitter and suspended from other major social media platforms in the wake of the Capitol riot by his supporters on January 6.

The US House of Representatives has delivered to the Senate the articles of impeachment against former President Donald Trump for inciting the riot at the Capitol building on January 6.

He is also facing impeachment for inciting the riot at the Capitol building on January 6, with US Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer disclosing last week that Trump's impeachment trial is scheduled to begin the week of February 8.

It will be the first time in US history that any president faced two impeachment trials or that any president was impeached after he left office.

In December 2019, House Democrats impeached President Trump on charges of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, but the Republican-controlled Senate voted not to convict him.

NDLEA proposes drug tests for matriculating students of tertiary institutions, NYSC members, government appointees

The Chairman of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brigadier-General Buba Marwa, Rtd, says plans are underway to seek government approval to conduct drug tests on matriculating students of tertiary institutions, NYSC members, security agencies fresh recruits, and all newly appointed government employees.

Marwa disclosed this during a meeting with commanders of the 36 states of the Federation, FCT and special commands today Monday, January 25.

He urged the commanders to be desirous of keeping drugs out of Nigerian streets and homes.

''NDLEA is ready to help and we must help. The success we make of this particular task goes a long way to determine the socio-economic stability of the nation.

We need not be told of the nexus between drug use, crime, and criminalities. The exponential growth of the nefarious drug activities can be directly linked to the upsurge in crimes such as insurgency, terrorism, kidnapping, cultism, political thuggery, gangsterism, r**e, and other maladaptation bedeviling today’s Nigeria.

Ours is a national assignment. Drug has littered everywhere; every community. We will lead the fight and we will succeed. Make no mistake about it, it is a collective effort. We will equally devote a lot of efforts to prevention, treatment, and aftercare and focus on family and parenting, community, school systems, advocacy to all groups” he said

Dominion voting machine sues Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani for $1.3 billion over claims it committed election fraud to favour Biden

Dominion Voting Systems, the company responsible for the machines used in the US 2020 presidential election, has sued former President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani for defamation after he pushed the "Big Lie" about election fraud on his podcast and TV appearances.

Dominion is seeking more than $1.3 billion in damages over claims they deleted Trump votes to give Biden a win.

The lawsuit notes that while Giuliani spread falsehoods about Dominion being owned by Venezuelan communists and corrupting the election, he did not make those claims in lawsuits he pushed on behalf of Trump.

Dominion voting machine sues Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani for $1.3 billion over claims it committed election fraud to favour Biden

"Just as Giuliani and his allies intended, the Big Lie went viral on social media as people tweeted, retweeted, and raged that Dominion had stolen their votes. While some lies -- little lies -- flare up on social media and die with the next news cycle, the Big Lie was different," lawyers for Dominion wrote in the lawsuit, filed in DC District Court on Monday morning, January 25.

"The harm to Dominion's business and reputation is unprecedented and irreparable because of how fervently millions of people believe it."

This is the second defamation lawsuit Dominion has filed in recent weeks following the election.

The vote auditing company previously sued lawyer Sidney Powell, who pushed similar claims alongside Giuliani.

In the lawsuit Monday, the company claimed Giuliani continued to claim without evidence that Dominion aided election fraud even after he received a cease-and-desist letter.

According to Dominion, Guiliani, the former mayor of New York repeated his claims on podcasts, his radio show and YouTube shows.

Giuliani also appeared on TV networks OANN, Fox and Fox Business to make accusations of election fraud, the lawsuit notes.

Dominion also details how on January 6 -- hours before a crowd of Trump supporters in Washington violently overran the Capitol -- Giuliani continued to push
