Founder of coll@psed Turkish crypto exchange Thodex, Faruk Ozer, bags just 11,196 years in prison

Faruk Fatih Ozer, who ran crypto exchange Thodex until it imploded in 2021, was sentenced to 11,196 years in prison by a Turkish court for crimes including fraud.

The former CEO of Turkish crypto exchange Thodex, Faruk Fatih Özer, has been sentenced to 11,196 years in prison by a Turkish court for various crimes including fr@ud.

Delivering its verdict late Thursday, September 7, the court in Istanbul sentenced the 29-year-old and his two brothers, Serap and Guven, to the same jail terms, after finding them guilty of aggravated fr@ud, leading a criminal organization and money laundering.

Ozer was initially reported to have fled Turkey in April 2021 with $2 billion in investor assets, although that figure has since been disputed, AFP reports.

Prosecutors said Ozer had transferred 250 million liras in user assets (worth about $30 million at the time) to three secret accounts when he fled Turkey in April 2021, with much of the money ending up in a Malta bank.

The indictment said the Ozer brothers had caused 356 million liras of d@mage to clients in all.

He was arrested last year in Albania on an international arrest warrant from Interpol.

In 2013, this guy (James Howells) threw away a hard drive with a digital wallet containing 75,000 bitcoins.

He had mined the bitc0ins over four years when crypt0cvrrenc!es had very little worth and almost unknown.

Fast-forward to a few years later, he discovered the worth of what he threw away.

For several years now, he has been trying to plead to the City of Newport to allow him excavate the city's trash site where he believed the hard drive is.

He also promised to give a huge percentage of the money to the city, but the government has refused.

What Howells lost in that wallet is worth more than $275,000,000 today.

That’s over (220,000,000,000) 220 Billion Naira converted to Nigeria currency.

23/06/2023

E-hailing platform, Uber Nigeria has announced an increase in fares to help drivers cover the recent increase in fuel costs and inflation rate.

Uber, in a statement attributed to Tope Akinwumi, Country Manager for Uber in Nigeria said the fare adjustment is designed to help drivers cover rising operating costs and is part of the ongoing efforts to support their driver community.

“Drivers are at the heart of everything we do, and we continue to work on initiatives and engage with drivers to help make Uber the app of choice for drivers while maintaining an affordable service for riders.

“Following an in-depth review of the current fuel subsidy removal, Uber updated fares on the 3rd and 9th of June on the app to reflect existing economic conditions.
“We believe these changes have helped better support drivers in increasing their earning opportunities. Furthermore, we lowered the service fee in February 2022 from 25% to 20% to help enable better-earning opportunities for drivers. “We want the best for drivers who operate on the Uber platform and frequently engage with them directly through roundtables, surveys, phone, and in-app channels to better understand and receive feedback on the realities they face in their businesses,” Akinkunmi said

The company also said that it is constantly monitoring local dynamics to see what changes can be implemented and when. Uber also said that its service fee ensures the running of the Uber App and helps it maintain and make continuous investments to enhance its technology designed to meet the needs of riders and drivers.

The company claimed that drivers on its platform earn more than other ride-hailing platforms in Nigeria.

Bill Gates, Arnergy Discuss Accelerating Renewable Energy Adoption In Nigeria
Bill Gates, founder of Breakthrough Energy Ventures and co-founder, Microsoft, during a tour of the Arnergy manufacturing facility Wednesday at Lagos, discussed with Arnergy management, financiers, and industry experts about the challenges and prospects of adopting renewable energy in Nigeria.

During the visit of Arnergy’s facility, a portfolio company of Breakthrough Energy Ventures (BEV), experts called for partnerships with financiers and collaboration with industry leaders to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy in Nigeria, especially in light of the removal of petrol subsidies and the increase in electricity tariffs.

They also said that the petrol subsidy removal and increase in electricity tariff have opened a new market for the renewable energy sector.

Gates said, “I see a huge energy transition opportunity where distributed solar solutions like Arnergy’s displaces gasoline generators for millions of SMEs in Nigeria given the recent fuel subsidy removal.”
Not realising a large number of Nigerians rely on petrol generators, Gates said that it is a huge thing for the renewable energy market.

He also pointed out that financing customers and reducing cost of systems will be critical for scale.
The chief executive officer of Arnergy, Femi Adeyemo highlighted the modular Arnergy 5000 lithium battery energy storage systems (BESS) and its proprietary energy management hardware and Solarbase software that were developed by the company’s innovative young Nigerian engineers with an average age of 26 years.

The technology allows financiers, channel partners, and consumers to lease and pay for energy at a cost cheaper than current spend on diesel and petrol generators. Existing customers are in love with her real-time Internet of Things (IoT) remote monitoring and control of the power systems that allow remote shut down and turn on and energy efficiency advisory from anywhere in the world on Android and IoS platforms.

FG, Labour fix eight weeks for conclusion of subsidy removal talks

President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero (middle) during a press briefing shortly after the Federal Government’s meeting with NLC/TUC over subsidy removal at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

• NLC insists grey areas must be addressed as sub-committees commence wage review
• TUC: We’ll follow up closely to ensure successful implementation
• Fasua: Labour’s demand for N200,000 minimum wage not realistic
• Restraining order on NLC, TUC from embarking on strike subsists, says court

Organised labour yesterday, demanded that grey areas must be addressed before reaching an agreement on implementation framework to be adopted as fallout of the petrol subsidy removal, while it agreed to eight weeks for conclusion of talks over subsidy removal.
This was the kernel of discussion as representatives of the Federal Government and leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), yesterday, met in resumed talks on petrol subsidy removal palliative.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, was presided by the Chief of Staff to President Bola Tinubu, Femi Gbajabiamila, where a Presidential Proposal Steering Committee, which also had five sub-committees, was formed.

The negotiation continues today with the sub-committees created – Cash Transfers, Social Investment Programme (SIP), Cost of Governance, Energy, Mass Transit and Housing – given eight weeks to conclude their assignment to hasten the implementation of the framework in cushioning the effect of petrol subsidy removal on Nigerians. Nominees to the committees would be made known today.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, who mentioned the grey areas that needed to be addressed, said representations on the committees should not be lopsided. He said an agreed membership of both the steering and sub-committees should be on a basis of 60 to 40 per cent. He said it was important they return to the normal mechanism done in setting up tripartite committees in the past.

He assured that if the solutions and recommendations thrown up are adopted and implemented faithfully by the government, they would

Boards of 14 agencies exempted from Tinubu’s dissolution order (FULL LIST)
President Bola Tinubu’s directive to dissolve the apex decision-making organs of the establishments falls within the ambit “of his Constitutional Powers and in the Public interest," a statement said.
The boards of at least 14 agencies pulled through Monday’s sweeping shake-up aborting the tenure of the top hierarchies of the Nigerian Government’s agencies, parastatals, institutions and state-owned companies.

President Bola Tinubu’s directive to dissolve the apex decision-making organs of the establishments falls within the ambit “of his Constitutional Powers and in the Public interest,” said the government in a statement Monday night.

The rejig continues a chain of leadership changes in major government institutions since the president assumed power barely three weeks ago.

Godwin Emefiele, the central bank governor, was asked to vacate his seat on 9 May to allow the government to start a probe into the operations of the apex bank under his watch. The State Security Service has since detained Mr Emefiele.

Folashodun Shonubi, the bank’s deputy governor overseeing the operations directorate, has been acting in his stead.
On Thursday, Abdulrasheed Bawa, chair of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, was suspended, later presenting himself to the secret police for questioning.

President Tinubu will temporarily handle issues that, ordinarily, members of the dissolved boards were duty-bound to treat until new boards are in place, the statement said.

Such matters will reach the president via the permanent secretaries “of their respective supervisory Ministries and Offices,” the statement added.
The dissolution does not, however, affect boards, commissions and councils listed in the Third Schedule, Part 1, Section 153 (i) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended.

PREMIUM TIMES presents the list of the identified boards, commissions and councils, featuring in the Third Schedule, Part 1, Section 153 (i) of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution as amended.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) beneficiaries of student loan initiatives in other countries were committing su***de over their inability to repay debts.

The ASUU National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke stated this while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
He said, “This would have been better if we are giving it to those set of students who are very poor, it should be called a grant, not a loan.

“It should be called a grant since it is coming from the Federation Account and not that (after) these people have accessed it and when they are graduating, they have heavy loads behind them and within two years, if they don’t pay, they go to jail.”
Tinubu
Osodeke, therefore, asked President Bola Tinubu to change the newly assented Students Loans Act to grants for poor students.
The Student Loan law provides interest-free loans to poor Nigerian students.

The loan repayment starts two years after the beneficiary completes the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC.

However, the ASUU President said the policy is not sustainable.

He said, “The idea of student loans came in 1972 and it was in a bank established. People who took loans never paid.

“In 1994, 1993, the military enacted Decree 50 also set up a Students’ Loan Board. The National Assembly domesticated it in 2004 and within a year, it went off. The money disappeared. We want to see how this one will be different,” he added.
ASUU President also said the conditions for the loan are not practicable.

He said more than 90% of students won’t meet the requirements to access the loan.

Osodeke said, “We, as a union also did research of countries all over the world, of people who have benefited from this loan, they were committing su***de.

“Recently, (President Joe) Biden is trying to pay back the bank loans of some who borrowed in the US,” he added.

The ASUU president asked President to take another look at the new law, calling for a probe of the activities of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Just In: CBN lifts cash deposit restriction on domiciliary accounts, allows $10k withdrawals daily

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has lifted the cash deposit restrictions placed on domiciliary accounts, stating that holders of such account are permitted to utilize cash deposits not exceeding $10,000 per day.

The apex bank in a press statement on Sunday, June 18, said customers “shall have unfettered and unrestricted access to funds in their accounts”.

The statement followed an extraordinary Bankers’ Committee meeting held to discuss the implementation and implications of the policy changes for the banking public.

According to the CBN, the policy changes aim to promote transparency, liquidity, and price discovery in the FX market in order to improve FX supply, discourage speculation, enhance customer confidence and ensure overall stability in the FX market.

According to the Director, Corporate Communications, Dr. Isa Abdulmumin, the CBN, in line with deliberations at the meeting, provided further guidance to Deposit Money Banks (DMBs).

He said all visible and invisible transactions (medicals, school fees, BTA/PTA, airline and other remittances) are eligible for the Investors’ and Exporters’ (I & E) window.

Actor Jamie Foxx reportedly ‘par@lyzed and bl+nd’ due to COVID-19 vaccine

American actor Jamie Foxx has reportedly s¥ffered partial par@lysis following a COVID-19 vaccine complication.

The vaccine, according to Hollywood journalist A.J. Benza, resulted in a bl%%d clot in his brain that led to him being “partially par@lyzed and bl+nd” in addition to a series of other complications.

Benza claims the news was confirmed by a source close to Foxx.

“Jamie had a bl%%d clot in his brain after he got the sh%t. He did not want the sh%t, but the movie he was on, he was pressured to get it,” confessed the journalist, who formally worked as a columnist for the New York Daily News, during an appearance on Dr. Drew Pinsky’s online show “Ask Dr. Drew.”

“The bl%%d clot in the brain caused him at that point to be partially par@lyzed and bl+nd,” Benza alleged, as he insisted his insider was “someone in the room” with first-hand knowledge of Foxx’s hospitalization.

Foxx was admitted to the hospital after s¥ffering a “medical complication” on Thursday, April 11, according to his daughter, Corinne Foxx.

“Luckily, due to quick action and great care, he is already on his way to recovery. We know how beloved he is and appreciate your prayers. The family asks for privacy during this time,” she said.

The 55-year-old’s medical woes began while filming his latest movie Back in Action. The movie, also starring Cameron Diaz, is said to have moved forward with production without Foxx, using a body double in his place.
