STREET TO SCHOOL: Saving Nigeria's Future
Education they say is the future but with government schools not just enough and private centers proven to be too expensive for parents in poor communities, over ten million children are reportedly out of school in Nigeria.
In a bid to protect the rights of these children, the Street To School Initiative provides, free education to hundreds of pupils from less privileged backgrounds in Ikola-Odunsi, Agbado-Oke Local Council Development Area, which is one of the urban ghettos in Lagos.
The outbreak of coronavirus pandemic came with a fresh challenge as schools have been kept under lock since March following government’s directive aimed at curtailing the spread of the virus. Many schools have resorted to online learning but the Street to School can’t afford virtual lessons due to lack of funds; besides, parents of the pupils cannot afford to pay for computers, phones, mobile data nor even electricity.
The school has however devised alternative means to keep it’s pupil educated. How? And in fact how is this school which deprived of any government support gets its funding? Or are standards being compromised? Do parents of these pupils feel comfortable or otherwise about a school giving free education to their children?
In this mini-documentary, we spoke with the founder/director of the Street To School Initiative, Tosin Olowoyeye-Taiwo and some beneficiary parents in the area.

FACE MASK: Tricycle Riders Lament Police Extortion
Following the rise and rise of COVID-19 cases in Lagos State, the government announced in May, that it was banning activities of commercial motorcycle riders (okada) and limiting the capacity of commercial tricycle operators to 60 percent while also insisting that both passengers and riders must use face mask.
Though Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s intention was pure and was a simple effort aimed at curtailing the spread of the virus as lockdown was being eased in the country, he unknowingly opened an easy avenue for some ‘bad eggs’ in government security and traffic agencies to exploit and extort some innocent Nigerians.
In Ijaiye, Ojokoro LCDA, tricycle riders spoke to seunawosika.com on how daily police extortion over non-use of face mask by ‘stubborn’ passengers is killing their businesses, and bringing untold hardship upon them and their family as they seek daily bread with majority of them still striving to recover from the harsh conditions they suffered as a result of the lockdown.

RENT STAMP DUTY: Fair Or Frustrating
Just as Nigerians are still battling the negative economic effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic, the Federal government through its tax collector, the Federal Inland revenue Service (FIRS), announced the implementation of a six per cent stamp duty on rent and lease.
The announcement by the FIRS naturally angers majority of the masses with many lashing out at government for “being inconsiderate” but Estate Surveyor and Valuer, Olusegun Oluyemo says there is no cause for alarm.
The FIRS has warned that the stamp duty is not a basis for increase in rent however, in a country where inflation and rent keep rising at an unchecked rate, can Nigerians afford to pay more?

LOCKDOWN EASE: The Lamentations After
By Seun Awosika
Stand-still traffic, crowded buses, lack of physical distancing, few face masks and long queues at banks are some of the images that returned to Nigeria's commercial capital, Lagos just a few days after the relaxation of the lockdown put in place to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic.
The eased lockdown regulations come with freedom to move around to certain places at certain periods while markets are allowed to open every other day. However, cost of transportation in the city has doubled and market leaders are finding tough to enforce compliance with market schedule, social distancing and use of face-masks.

POVERTY: The Otherside of Luxury
There are many privileges we take for granted. To many, those simple privileges are a luxury.
