Muhammad Hashim Suleiman writes Governor Nasir ElRufai about security challenges in Zaria

Sir,
Zaria.

Zaria is on the brink. The kidnappers seem to have found gold deposits in Zaria. They seem to have set an invincible circle around Zaria from where they move in and out to carry out their deadly raids with little or no kinetic resistance from our coercive apparatuses. They kidnap Zaria men, women and children, some of whom are never even reported.

Sir, do you know that farm lands after Shika gari have since become no man's land? Do you know that places like Saye and environs are fast becoming ghost cities? Do you know that many people, particularly cattle rearers have since emigrated from such abandoned places and are settling in new areas like Kabama, Hayin Bagadaza, etc with consequent hardships? Do you know that such kidnappers now easily get access to our campuses and poach on staff in staff quarters? Do you know that such kidnapped victims regain freedom only after selling their houses, lands and cars? Imagine someone who's worked for 20 years being made to sell all that he has to regain the freedom of his loved ones and go back to square zero after a decimal point.

Sir, do you know that it is the victims of such siege that your tax agency has gathered men and gun, including DSS in order to force them to pay "taxes?" Do you know that to date your government hasn't come out to communicate with Zaria people to reassure them of your commitment to safeguarding our lives? Instead, what we have is an open threat in both English and Hausa about how your government has amassed its arsenals, not to fight the kidnappers but to fight victims of kidnapping into paying "taxes?" Sir, governance as you know, isn't only about revenue generation. You can only generate revenue where there is peaceful coexistence and smooth economic activities.

So, how do we pay taxes when the little we have is being threatened by bandits marauding as kidnappers. How do we pay taxes when we are lost as to whom to fall back to when the kidnappers strike? In as much as it is alright for government to demand for taxes to be paid, it is also pertinent for same government to safeguard the lives of the tax payers. It is inappropriately tyrannical to allow us be victims of kidnappers and at the same time to organize men and machinery, not to fight the kidnappers but to force people suffering to pay taxes.

In governance, communication, particularly communicating with people says a lot about our leaders. Yes, in terms of security issues, not everything should be in the open. However, showing strong feelings to people that have suffered from the inactions of government goes a long way in soothing their pains. You cannot keep quiet while people are under siege by kidnappers and then just wake up to tell them you're coming with arms to force them into paying taxes. Actions should be seen in stopping kidnapping and collecting taxes.

Thank you sir.

Yours sincerely,
Muhammad Hashim Suleiman.

PRESIDENT BUHARI CONGRATULATES BIDEN, SAYS NIGERIA LOOKS FORWARD TO GREATER COOPERATION WITH THE US

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated former Vice President Joe Biden on his election as new President of the United States "at a time of uncertainty and fear in world affairs."

The Nigerian leader said "your election is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means."

According to President Buhari, "the most powerful group are not the politicians, but voters who can decide the fate of the politicians at the polling booth."

He noted that "the main fascination of democracy is the freedom of choice and the supremacy of the will of the people."

The President added that "respect for the will of the people is the very reason why democracy remains the best form of government, despite its limitations from one polity to another, and from one society to another."

According to him, "I am thrilled by the fact that you are an experienced politician who had served as Congressman for 40 years and a Vice President for eight years. This is a remarkable track record that gives us hope that you will add value to the presidency and world affairs."

President Buhari also noted that, "with your election, we look forward to greater cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, especially at economic, diplomatic and political levels, including the war against terrorism."

On international affairs, President Buhari urged Mr. Biden to "deploy your vast experience in tackling the negative consequences of nationalist politics on world affairs which have created divisions, conflicts and uncertainties."

The Nigerian leader also called on Mr. Biden "to introduce greater engagement with Africa on the basis of reciprocal respects and shared interests."

RAHAMA SADAU APOLOGISES OVER UNWARRANTED PICTURES

Salam, it’s sad and unfortunate waking up to series of unexpected messages, tags & trends over the harmless pictures i posted. As a human, I laughed at some, frowned against many & disapproved most. To the most unfortunate event, some of these comments took a different dimension.

Having mixed followers, bashing each other’s faiths to the extent of creating trends like "Assistant Allah" (subhanallah), raining curses and some tweeting blasphemous words to our Prophet Muhammad (SAW)- this is the height of it and it stands condemnable and regrettable. I'm with all sense of sincerity, dissociating myself from such derogatory & hurtful words. To everyone who knows me or follows me, should know I’m not the type that react to anything or embrace advices from social media moral police. But my Prophet & religion is where i draw the line.

Any disrespect to my religion and Prophet regarding those pictures remain condemned and reprobated, not in any way & not on any event. The perpetrators should learn to separate people’s way of life and respect for their faiths. I remain defender of my Prophet in heart, online and offline. I deeply and sincerely apologized for the unseen circumstances that led to these avoidable, yet regrettable dramas.

It’s in human nature to judge others and act as saint, I appreciate those who felt offended & decided to call me out through DM’s, Text messages & phone calls. That’s true love & I’m never taking that for granted. EVER! ❤️🎈

Lastly, To the bloggers & everyone that saw a chance to trend, I do not wish for you what you wished upon me. ✌🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

BREAKING: 2 mosques destroyed in fresh attack on Enugu Muslim community

Some hoodlums have attacked Muslim communities, destroying properties and two mosques in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Sources told BBC Hausa service on Monday that the altercation started when a Muslim woman selling tomato took Keke Napep from a village market to her shop in the town.

According to the source, the woman and the Keke Napep driver got into an argument over her transport fare, resulting in the destruction and burning of properties belonging to Muslims in the area.

Speaking, one of the leaders of northerners in the area, Muhammad Adam Yusuf said, “Most of us northerners are now in hiding in police custody, while many have already travelled to their states.

“Most shops belonging to our people including mine have been burgled and our wares carted away. Many have been wounded though none is reported dead so far.

“In fact, more than 90% of Hausas have emigrated, the few of us are now hiding in police custody,” Yusuf said.

The leader of Nsukka Muslim community, Alhaji Sani Ugwuanyi also told BBC Hausa that, “The two mosques, one for daily congregational prayers and the other one which is the central mosque here have both been destroyed.

“The entire structure of the first mosque has been completely destructed while the central mosque has been burnt down.

“There is also another Islamiyyah and Primary School that was also destructed,” he lamented.

When contacted, the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Daniel Ndukwe said the force was not aware of the attacks but promised to investigate it.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has condemned attacks on Muslim places of worship in Enugu and other states in Igboland.

The MURIC Director, Prof. Ishaq Akintola, made the condemnation in a statement on Monday, saying that the Islamic School, Afikpo, in Ebonyi State has also received threats of impending invasion.

Mr Akintola recalled that 11 Muslims were killed during the protests in Port Harcourt and Orlu while the Orlu Central Mosque was completely destroyed barely two weeks ago.

The group noted that markets belonging to Muslims in the region were also attacked and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed.

The group, therefore, called for a halt to the burning of mosques in the South East and South South.

The organization also appealed to the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, to protect Muslims as well as their corporate and individual properties in the region.

The statement read: “Christians in Igboland are not yet satisfied with the cold-blooded killing of 11 Muslims during protests. They are thirsty for more blood.

“They attacked two mosques in Nsukka on Saturday, 31st October, 2020. These were the mosque at Old Barracks junction and the Central Mosque on Eden Road, Nsukka.

“The fracas reportedly started after a Muslim lady got into an argument with a keke Napep driver over transport fare.

“It is becoming glaring that there is a conspiracy to wipe out Muslims in Igboland and any little excuse is seized upon to descend on Muslims living in their midst.

“Even as we go to press, the only Islamic school in the whole Eastern Nigeria which is in Afikpo, Ebonyi State, is under palpable and severe threat.

“The school management has received about three threat messages in the past one week alone. Attack on the school is imminent and the state government has not uttered a word.

“This school is a boarding institution with about 250 students in its hostels. Those students came from all over Nigeria.

“What does the governor of Ebonyi think will happen if 250 Muslim students are slaughtered under his watch?

“MURIC appeals to the Inspector General of Police to protect Muslims and their corporate and individual properties in Igboland.

“In the same manner, we remind the governors of Eastern and South-South states that the buck stops on their tables.

“As the chief security officers in their respective states, they have the responsibility to protect all citizens under them. We are compiling reports of attacks on Muslims and their properties in the region.

“We demand adequate compensation for victims of Igbo religious fanaticism. Families of deceased Muslims must receive commensurate compensation.

“The governor of Enugu State owes it a duty to rebuild the two mosques which were burnt in Nsukka on Saturday.

“Only thus can he assure Nigerians that he did not give tacit approval to attacks on his Muslim subjects.

“MURIC calls the attention of Nigerians and the international community to the current trend of constant and unprovoked attacks on Muslims, the killing of innocent Muslims, the burning of their mosques and the destruction of their individual properties in Igboland and South-South Nigeria.

“It should be noted now that Christians are the first to unleash violence on Nigerian Muslims and the latter are not even retaliating.

“We note with disgust the hypocritical silence of the unholy alliance of the Middle Belt, the Northern Christian Elders Forum, Afenifere, Ohaneze and the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

“All hell would have been let loose had it been Christians who were being killed. But none of them feels concerned now because Muslims are at the receiving end.

“None of them issued any statement condemning the unprovoked killing of Muslims and none of them called the killers to order. Rather, they are encouraging their youths to shed more Muslim blood.

“They are used to hearing the White House asking Nigerian authorities, ‘Why are you killing Christians in Nigeria?’

“Ironically, nobody has asked the White House, ‘Why are you killing American blacks?’ We denounce Western asymmetric scale of justice that looks the other way when Nigerian Christians are killing Muslims.

“We charge the West, particularly the United States, to re-examine the situation in Nigeria within the real context of true events.

“Stories of Christians being killed are, more often than not, marketing gimmicks intended only to attract millions of dollars in charity donations to Christian missionaries after the ‘playing the victim’ soap opera.

“Nobody expected America to swallow its hook, line and sinker but that is exactly what America has done.

“MURIC salutes Nigerian Muslims for their resilience. We advise against reprisal killings or the burning of churches anywhere in the country.

“Muslims are better when they practice the true teachings of Islam. The Glorious Qur’an says, “Goodness and evil are not equal.

“Therefore pay evil with goodness and see how enemies become close friends (Qur’an 41:34).”
