Breaking: Sen. Akpabio Emerges Senate President

Former Minister of Niger Delta and ex-governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, has emerged victorious over Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari, the former governor of Zamfara State, in the race for the Senate President position in the 10th Assembly.

The nomination of Akpabio for Senate President was put forward by Senator Ali Ndume, who presented a detailed biography of the former governor from Akwa Ibom.

On the other hand, Senator Ishaku Abbo nominated Senator Abdul Aziz Yari for the prestigious role.

It is worth noting that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had designated the South-South region as the rightful holder of the Senate President position in the 10th Assembly, with Senator Godswill Akpabio being their preferred candidate. Additionally, Senator Jubrin Barau from the North West was selected as the favoured candidate for the deputy Senate President position.

However, this designation faced resistance from several lawmakers, with Abdul’aziz Abubakar Yari being one of the prominent figures opposing the decision.

Bayelsa Commission Presents Environmental Pollution Report

The Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission (BSOEC) will on Tuesday, May 16 formally present the final report of its investigation into the impact of oil exploration activities on the state to the international community.

The BSOEC is chaired by a number of renowned dignitaries in the governance and international development arena, including Baroness Valerie Amos and former Ghanaian president, John Kuffuor.

The report will be presented at the House of Lords in London to further draw global attention to the devastating effects of oil pollution in Bayelsa and indeed the Niger Delta region.

The BSOEC was set up in 2019 by former Governor Henry Seriake Dickson, who is now Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, to conduct extensive investigation and research in order to establish the environmental, human and economic impact of oil pollution on the state.

Its findings and far-reaching recommendations are in the report titled: “An Environmental Genocide: Counting the Human and Environmental Cost of Oil in Bayelsa, Nigeria,” and seeks global attention and partnership to mitigate the effect of environmental degradation on people of the state.

The commission’s findings revealed that “few places have suffered more than the state of Bayelsa, which sits at the heart of the Niger Delta. Home to Nigeria’s first commercial oil well, Bayelsa accounts for about 18-20 percent of Nigeria’s oil production."

“While the state accounts for only slightly over one percent of Nigeria’s total population, it is estimated to have suffered over a quarter of total recorded instances of oil pollution.”

Among those to grace the event are the Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Amb. Sarafadeen Tunji Isola, renowned environmentalist and Ibenanaowei of Ekpetiama Kingdom in Bayelsa State, King Bubaraye Dakolo, and former Archbishop of York, Dr. John Sentamu.

Edo Police Arrests Naval, NCS Personnel For Robbery

The Edo State Police Command has arrested a Navy officer, Ibrahim Adamu, 25, and an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Abdullahi Abdulwahab 26, over alleged armed robbery and car snatching.

Spokesperson of the command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, who paraded the suspects on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, said they were arrested in Ekpoma by a crack team of the command based on credible information.

According to the PPRO, the suspects attacked the driver of an unregistered C300 Mercedes Benz car in Sapele, Delta State, snatched the car from him and also forced him to transfer a sum of N400,000 to their account.

He said the suspects were to take the car to Abuja and sell it when they were arrested by the police in Ekpoma, Edo state.

"The suspects have made statements and claimed to be personnel of the Nigerian Navy and Correctional Service respectively.”

Nwabuzor said the vehicle and military uniform were also recovered from the suspects.

Speaking with journalists, Ibrahim Adamu, who was recruited into the Nigeria Navy in 2019, said he was arrested for stealing a Mercedes Benz C300 car in Delta state.

“I was recruited into the Navy in 2019. I worked in Lokoja, Kogi state before I was posted to Warri, Delta state. It was when I went on a course in Sapele that I made the plan to steal a vehicle,” he said.

"After my course, Abdulwahab came to visit me and my plans, assuring him that we would make money and he agreed to join me. We chatted about a tricycle from Warri to Sapele for the operation.

"We saw a vehicle without a number plate in Sapele, we asked him to stop but he refused. We pursued him to a village where he finally stopped. And I told him, we are taking him to our office for driving an unregistered vehicle and he pleaded that we should settle the matter there but we refused.

"I took over the steering from him and started driving but when we got to Oghara Road, he offered us money to settle the matter and I told him to pay N500,000 but he paid N400,000 to a Point of Sale account which I gave him and was later transferred to me. We were driving to Abuja to sell the car when the police arrested us.”
